The very word "secrecy" is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it." -- John F. Kennedy

Bush Asks Daschle
to Limit September 11 Probes

President Bush personally asked Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle Tuesday to limit the congressional investigation into the events of September 11, congressional and White House sources told CNN.

The request was made at a private meeting with congressional leaders Tuesday morning. Sources said Bush initiated the conversation.

He asked that only the House and Senate intelligence committees look into the potential breakdowns among federal agencies that could have allowed the terrorist attacks to occur, rather than a broader inquiry that some lawmakers have proposed, the sources said [CNN 1/29/2002]

By Presidential order the investigation into 9-11 was only allowed to look at "Intelligence failures".

Imagine having an investigation into the sinking of the RMS Titanic and confining that investigation into looking at "metallurgical failures". You would get a report about where the ship might have survived with better metal in certain key locations, but no mention of the misplaced lookout binoculars, the ignored radio reports of ice, and of course, Bruce Ismay's pressuring Captain E. J. Smith into running along at top speed for the sake of favorable newspaper coverage in New York.

Likewise, the 9-11 investigation focused on "Intelligence failures", so we got a report about how more money and authority for the spy agencies might have saved us, but no mention of Bush's sitting there reading about goats, no mention of the Norad and FEMA exercises taking place on 9-11, no mention of the Israeli agents arrested on 9-11 or evidence linking them to 9-11 classified by the US Government.
