Yemen's Houthi movement has seized the strategic Red Sea port city of Mokha from Saudi-backed pro-government forces, military sources say.
The capture of Mokha would bring the Iran-backed group closer to controlling the Bab al-Mandab strait, a key shipping route about 75km (46 miles) to the south that links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.
Hundreds of people have reportedly been killed and thousands displaced since the Houthis launched an offensive in the south-western coastal region a week ago.
Saudi Aramco's 400,000-barrel-per-day Jizan refinery was hit in a new attack Monday, threatening a major Red Sea refining hub while Saudi Arabia is moving more oil west to avoid the Strait of Hormuz.
The Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF) announced several military operations on 7 September, including the destruction of weapons shipments coming in from Saudi Arabia, as reports and satellite images revealed new attacks by Sanaa on Aramco energy infrastructure.
“Arms trucks coming from Saudi Arabia were targeted and caught fire at the Al-Wadiah military camp,” according to a YAF statement.
Over 300 people have been killed in days of clashes in southwestern Yemen, causing many civilians to flee the area, AFP reported on Sunday, as the war in the country has reignited following escalations that began in the wake of Saudi Arabia’s July airstrikes that targeted the Sanaa International Airport.

Yemen’s Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthis, launched significant strikes on Thursday targeting Saudi-backed forces inside Yemen.
Yahya Saree, spokesman for the Ansar Allah-led Yemeni Armed Forces, said that drone attacks targeted “Saudi enemy gatherings and vehicles on several fronts” but didn’t specify exactly where the operations were carried out.
