Thought for the day

The EU Parliament on Wednesday voted to declare Russia a "state sponsor of terrorism" over its invasion of Ukraine.

The step is a mostly-symbolic gesture, prompted by evidence of war crimes in the nine-month-old invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces.

In a statement, the parliament said that it hoped the designation could lead to legal consequences for Russian leaders like President Vladimir Putin in a hypothetical war-crimes trial.

Parliament members voted in favor of the move by 494 votes in support, 58 against, and 44 abstentions.

Leaders of the European Union are set to propose a natural gas price cap for one year, according to new draft legislation obtained by Reuters. But the new plan to contain elevated energy prices due to a plunge in Russian NatGas following the war in Ukraine might have trouble being passed because there would be disagreements among EU leaders about whether and how to cap prices.

The United States and its European allies have devised a plan to impose a price cap on Russian oil in "the next few days" in an effort to slash Moscow's oil revenues.

A senior US Treasury Department official told reporters on Tuesday that the US and the European Union (EU) would take steps to implement the cap once the EU members' consultations in regard to oil price levels are completed.

On Monday popular Twitter user Catturd2 posted this cartoon on the war in Ukraine adding, “It’s dumb that I’m laughing way too hard at this.”

The tweet triggered outgoing Congressman Adam Kinzinger – who then threatened violence against the online cartoon cat.

The Russian Embassy in Washington on Tuesday condemned the US reaction to the video believed to be showing a massacre of Russian prisoners of war by the Ukrainian military, saying that the US authorities enable a growing sense of impunity of neo-Nazis in Ukraine.

Earlier in the day, US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice Beth Van Schaack said that the US was monitoring reports of the shooting of Russian prisoners of war in Donbass. She urged all parties to respect international law.

Let’s take Kherson and FTX as two examples of NATO’s censorship of the hard and soft wars over Ukraine. British and Irish state controlled media have shown hours of smiling citizens greeting their Ukrainian liberators in Kherson, just like they welcomed their “liberators” in 1941.
