April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.

And so famously begins TS Eliot’s The Waste Land, one of the English language’s greatest poems and one of very many inspired, if that is the correct word, by the carnage of The Great War.

According to a report conducted with World Bank participation, the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip account for 80 percent of all people worldwide who are facing famine and severe hunger. 14,000 children have been killed, and 17,000 children remain without adult accompaniment.

Palestinians in the occupied West Bank are living in fear as armed Israeli settlers attack them, their families and homes in vengeful acts of violence which could uproot hundreds of Palestinians from their lands, residents said.

On Sunday, April 14, the morning light saw thousands of families leaving southern Gaza and flooding the central Gaza Strip, moving through the areas of Deir al-Balah and the Nuseirat refugee camp with the intention of making their way further north. They were going home.

Amal Clooney, the internationally acclaimed lawyer, is a liberal icon. She and her organization, the Clooney Foundation for Justice (CFJ), never shrink from pronouncing their global verdicts on human rights matters. And yet, despite being Lebanese and of Palestinian descent herself, Time magazine’s 2022 Woman of the Year has maintained complete silence on Israel’s continued bombardment of those very countries – a crime other human rights experts have labeled a genocide.
