BANGKOK (AP) — Myanmar’s military government on Wednesday said it will draft 60,000 young men and women yearly for military service under its newly activated conscription law, with call-ups beginning after the April festival marking the country’s traditional New Year.

The conscription measure was activated on Saturday by order of the chairman of the ruling military council, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing.

His surprise announcement appeared to confirm that the military has been stretched thin by increasing pressure from armed pro-democracy resistance forces that emerged after the army seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.

There are no reliable figures for the size of Myanmar’s military. The CIA World Factbook estimated that last year it had around 150,000-400,000 personnel. The Washington-based U.S. Institute of Peace has suggested that 21,000 service personnel have been lost through casualties, desertions and defections since the military takeover, leaving an effective force of about 150,000.

Claire's Observations:  I seriously doubt that the Myanmar's military dictatorship will get anywhere near 60,000 draftees for military service; those with skills are going to vote with their feet, and have ample time to do so, between now and Myanmar's April New Year. One also has to wonder if this potential increase in military power, is to fight a foreign enemy, or continue to stamp out domestic unrest.

A Wall Street Journal columnist who infamously advised Americans they can save money by not eating meals has found himself out of a job after major layoffs at the newspaper’s Washington DC office.

Gabriel T. Rubin announced on X that “I lost a job I really loved yesterday when WSJ’s top brass decided to crush the DC bureau.”

The writer then begged for a job, posting “I am eager to stay in journalism, so please reach out if there are any jobs left in this beleaguered business.”

CNN senior legal analyst Elie Honig said Tuesday that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis may have destroyed her election interference case against former President Donald Trump.

Willis appointed her romantic partner Nathan Wade as special prosecutor in the case, which a Trump co-defendant alleges is a conflict of interest because of benefits she received based on their relationship. Judge Scott McAfee will consider a motion Thursday to disqualify Willis based on the allegations.

Willis and Wade may get removed from the case, possibly putting an end to it, Honig told host Dana Bash on CNN’s “Inside Politics.”

Alina Habba, one of the lawyers representing former President Donald Trump in a civil business fraud lawsuit, demanded charges against Trump be dropped.

During an interview on Fox News with host Sean Hannity, Habba spoke about Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report on President Joe Biden’s mishandling of sensitive documents. Hur decided not to file any charges against Biden.

Also, Hur’s documentation of Biden’s substantial loss of mental capacity will also renew arguments among what is now a large majority of Americans — based on the most recent surveys — that they do not believe the president can serve another four-year term, much less serve out his current term.

Habba cited the report to demand that charges “absolutely” need to be dropped against Trump.

An Ohio law requiring that people under age 16 get parental permission to use social media is unconstitutional, a federal judge held this week.

On Monday, U.S. Judge Algenon Marbley told Ohio's attorney general not to enforce the law against tech industry group NetChoice or any of its members—a group that includes all sorts of major U.S. tech companies, including Meta, Pinterest, and TikTok. While this week's ruling is just a preliminary injunction, Marbley's opinion leaves little room for doubt that the tech companies will ultimately win here.

Marbley's ruling is the latest in a string of federal court orders against state laws intended to limit minors' social media or require platforms to follow special rules for users under the age of 18. Meanwhile, similar measures are still spreading like a bad viral meme throughout U.S. statehouses.

President Joe Biden once again appeared to bump his head as he was exiting Marine One this week, according to a video posted online, leading to new questions about his declining mental fitness.

“Biden, walking with first lady Jill Biden, did not appear to react after bumping into the top frame of Marine One’s exit. The incident comes amid heated debate over Biden’s continued mental fitness for office after Special Counsel Robert Hur revealed the 81-year-old has significant memory issues,” Fox News reported.

The Bidens left their home in Delaware around 10 p.m. EDT on Sunday, or about the time the fourth quarter of Super Bowl 58 began; the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime.

According to a new NBC News poll, nearly 9 in 10 respondents, or 89 percent, have some concerns about Biden’s mental status.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Israel protested with the Vatican on Wednesday after Pope Francis' deputy defined what is happening in Gaza as "carnage" resulting from a disproportionate Israeli military response to Hamas.

"It is a deplorable statement. Judging the legitimacy of a war without taking into account all relevant circumstances and data inevitably leads to wrong conclusions," the Israeli embassy to the Holy See said in a statement.

A day earlier, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin reiterated the "request that Israel's right to defence, which has been invoked to justify this operation, be proportional, and certainly with 30,000 deaths, it is not.

Claire's Observations;  Israel continues to conflate "self-defense" with "genocide"; thinking people understand this, and Israel can protest until the proverbial cows come home, but intelligent people know the difference.

Oh, and how many  Hamas women and children have your IDF storm troopers mowed down to date?!?   And how did your soldiers know, incontrovertibly, that the babies were Hamas?!?  Just asking, Bibi; I am sure you have a "reasonable explanation" here.

Until evidence is provided to prove otherwise, this should be assumed to be nothing more than a scam to push Johnson to move forward with the Senate's "America Last" foreign aid bill.

UPDATE: Sure enough, it appears this was a scam:

Jesus Alejandro Rivas-Figueroa, 15, an illegal alien from Venezuela, was arrested and charged with attempted murder on Friday. He was caught on camera on Thursday in Times Square, New York, shooting a 38-year-old female tourist from Brazil.

U.S. Marshals took the 15-year-old into custody in Yonkers on Friday, less than 24 hours after the shooting on Thursday night. Rivas-Figueroa was denied bail and is being held in jail after a Manhattan judge decided he’s a flight risk, which means he might try to escape and not show up in jail, likely due to his immigration status.

According to the New York City Police Department (NYPD), Rivas-Figueroa was shoplifting at a sporting goods store in Times Square on February 8 when a female security guard stopped him.

Indonesian Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto has declared victory in the presidential election after unofficial vote counts showed him with a significant lead over his rivals.

The 72-year-old former special forces commander, who had run unsuccessfully for president twice before, had about 58 percent of the votes, according to four pollsters, based on “quick count” ballots at samples of voting stations nationwide. The number of ballots tallied ranged from about 86 to 95 percent as of 14:00 GMT on Wednesday.

Claire's Observations:  here's hoping this guy and his party, are really going to be good for his people; Indonesia is the 3rd largest democracy on this planet.

A dozen victims of dead pedophile Jeffrey Epstein have filed a lawsuit against the US government, alleging that the FBI enabled his sex trafficking operation to continue for over two decades.

The victims, whose names are not public, allege the FBI had received tips about Epstein’s behavior as far back as 1996 but did nothing with the information.

The Hill reports, “A probe finally began in 2006, the suit says, but ended once Epstein pleaded guilty to a soliciting prostitution charge in Florida and was sentenced to 18 months in prison. The suit claims the FBI continued to ignore tips until Epstein was arrested on sex trafficking charges in 2019. He killed himself in prison months later.”

“As a direct and proximate cause of the FBI’s negligence, plaintiffs would not have been continued to be sex trafficked, abused, raped, tortured and threatened,” the complaint states, according to the report. “Jane Does 1-12 bring this lawsuit to get to the bottom — once and for all — of the FBI’s role in Epstein’s criminal sex trafficking ring.”

The Israeli government is preparing to launch a ground assault on Rafah in southern Gaza as their devastating military campaign enters its fifth month. The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, was adamant that the assault would happen: “We’re going to do it.”

This, after Israel started an aerial bombardment against Rafah, killing nearly 70 civilians as of Monday morning.

As deadly as the war has been for Palestinian civilians so far, the next phase could be even more terrible. More than a million Palestinians have crowded into Rafah over the course of the war and there is nowhere left for them to go. Even some of Israel’s most reliable supporters in the U.S. and Europe fear that a military operation in Rafah would be catastrophic for the people of Gaza.

The German government, normally a backer of Israel’s war, said earlier this month that an attack on Rafah would “simply not be justifiable.”

The proposed assault is also roiling Israel’s relations with Egypt. The Egyptian foreign minister, Sameh Shoukry, said that an assault would have “disastrous consequences.” According to the Associated Press, two Egyptians officials said that Egypt might even suspend its 1979 treaty with Israel if the ground assault goes ahead.

Claire's Observations:  from the beginning of this mess, Netanyahu has either ignored, or repudiated, anything Biden or his handlers have said they wanted resulting from this.  A durable cease-fire and exchange of hostages?!?  Hell, no!!  The move forward toward a viable Palestinian state?!?  Hell, no!!

But please understand:  Netanyahu is doing this because he can; he knows that he will get utterly zero pushback from this administration, as the President and most of Congress are completely compromised in one way or another, so Israel is certain of getting and all the money and bombs he wants.

And what about American troops on the ground in Gaza; Lebanon; Iran, and any other regional country Netanyahu believes to be Israel's "existential enemy?!?  Were I a betting woman, I would not bet against this.
