War Secretary Pete Hegseth is directing the military’s top cyber and intelligence agencies to prioritize defending the upcoming midterm elections against foreign interference, describing the task as a “no-fail mission” in a newly issued policy memorandum.

The Sept. 22 memo, titled “Countering Foreign Threats to 2026 Elections,” instructs military components to deploy all authorized intelligence and cyber capabilities to detect and neutralize efforts by foreign actors to influence the November vote.

The United States Supreme Court granted a stay that revives a modified federal system to help verify voter citizenship, reversing a lower-court block weeks before the midterm elections. The Department of Homeland Security can again use the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements program to confirm immigration and citizenship status for states conducting voter-roll maintenance. The order, issued on September 25, came on the emergency docket. The ruling was 6-3, with the conservative justices in the majority and the liberal justices in dissent.

The department described charges that include non-citizen voting in federal elections and false statements about citizenship to register or vote. The announcement grouped separate cases into a single update, which is common when agencies highlight ongoing enforcement work tied to the same type of crime.
