Queensland’s Voluntary Assisted Dying Review Board reported 1,082 deaths in the latest financial year, marking the highest annual total since the law took effect. The board’s prior report showed 793 deaths in 2023–24, which itself was a leap from 245 deaths recorded in the first six months after the program opened. The board is a statutory body that reviews each case and publishes annual figures. These reports establish steady year-over-year growth in state-sanctioned life ending.

Parliament set up Canada’s assisted death law to focus on suffering and irremediable conditions, not only on diagnosis labels. Committee records say mental illness could qualify once a temporary exclusion expired, as long as all criteria were met. The law looks at incurable illness, irreversible decline, and intolerable suffering. That opened arguments that mental disorders should be judged case by case. Critics say that frame ignores the shifting nature of many mental illnesses.

Some are celebrating Canada’s government “indefinitely suspending” legalizing euthanasia for mental illness as a great victory for life. Not me.

Let me explain. Of course, I am gratified that mental illness will not become grounds for being killed in 2027 as was scheduled. But note: In announcing the suspension, the government mooted legislation likely to pass that would have permanently outlawed killing for mental illness. Moreover, “indefinite” can mean years — or a month. So, it’s not a matter of principle.

Justice Minister Sean Fraser and Health Minister Marjorie Michel stated on October 7, 2026 that the federal government will introduce legislation, that will prevent the implementation of euthanasia for mental illness as a sole criteria.

However, the government legislation will also permit euthanasia by advanced request.

Euthanasia by advanced request is a very dangerous concept as it permits doctors and nurse practitioners to kill someone who has become incompetent, based on an advanced request.

Glenn Beck is raising concerns about a new banking initiative in Canada that would allow money to move between financial institutions as programmable digital tokens, warning that the same technology designed to make payments faster and more convenient could also be used to restrict access to funds.
