"If you want the victims of gun crime to be able to sue the gun makers for damages, then let us also allow the victims of drunk driving accidents to sue the car makers and distilleries as well. While we are at it, revoke the special protection granted to vaccine makers that was passed as part of the Homeland Security Act so that people who are actually harmed by poorly made vaccines can sue the pharmaceutical companies. And, given that at least 90% of these mass shootings were committed by people either on or withdrawing from prescription anti-depressants, the victims of those shootings should be allowed to sue the pharmaceutical companies as well. Let's sue the makers of kitchen cutlery for every stabbing death. Let's sue the makers of sporting equipment for every victim beaten to death with a baseball bat, and tool companies for making the hammers used on bludgeoning deaths as well. The family of everyone who dies by electrocution should be allowed to sue the electric company. The family of everyone who dies in a fall should be allowed to sue the makers of ladders and staircases. The family of everyone who commits suicide by hanging should be allowed to sue the rope companies. " -- Michael Rivero

One by one, the US empire is discrediting all of its own arguments for why it should lead the world. All the violence, tyranny and injustice it claims to be keeping at bay with its globe-dominating leadership is being inflicted by the empire itself, in more and more brazen and egregious ways each year.

The entire premise behind the empire’s containment strategies, military encirclement and cold war brinkmanship with China is that obviously the PRC needs to be stopped from rising and displacing the US as the global leader, and arguments about the need to control Russia and Iran by any means necessary arise from the same premise.

These arguments are accepted as a given by many on the basis that the US is a free and democratic country which promotes liberal values and opposes authoritarianism, so of course it’s better to have the US in charge of world affairs.

But every point which could be used to bolster that argument is being rapidly eroded by the US itself. The US is making the world a much more violent and dangerous place. The US is assaulting freedom by perpetrating and facilitating more and more injustice and authoritarianism. The US is undermining international law by constantly violating it. Every argument that could be made for the merits of US global leadership gets weaker by the day.

As the US backs Israel in routinely committing horrifying massacres in Gaza, it’s clear that the US cannot claim to be making the world a more peaceful and harmonious place.

As the US and its allies recklessly ramp up nuclear brinkmanship with Russia over the failing proxy war in Ukraine, it’s clear that the US cannot claim to be making the world safer

Wouldn’t it be fascinating, actually tremendously heartening, if the man who was supposedly our most divisive politician was the man who ultimately brought our broken country together—former President Donald J. Trump?

People gather for an election rally for former President Donald Trump in Crotona Park in the South Bronx in New Yor City on May 23, 2024. (Spencer Platt/Getty Images)

America is often, justifiably, criticized for having been built to some degree by slavery. It was not alone in that, and it still exists in some places, but America fought its most painful war to abolish the practice. Years later, it enacted the Civil Rights Act, enshrining equality in our laws. Racism was diminishing.

Yet some people have what I called in one of my books a “nostalgia for racism.” They can’t live without it for reasons that range from comfort with old assumptions to the most cynical personal gain.

Consequently, for as long as I have been alive, which is the entire post-World War II era, it has been assumed that minorities voted Democratic, whether to their advantage or not.

So I was gladdened to see, watching on television, the throng of racially mixed Americans gathered in one of my childhood haunts from Yankee Stadium to the Zoo to Van Cortlandt Park—the borough of The Bronx.

No less than one of the most reactionary forces in our culture—identity politics—was under attack in the massive show of support from that mixed-race crowd given former President Trump at his surprisingly large rally in Crotona Park in the southern part of the borough.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday Ukraine should hold a presidential election following the expiry of President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's five-year term.

Zelenskiy has not faced an election despite the expiry of his term, something he and Kyiv's allies deem the right decision in wartime. Putin said the only legitimate authority in Ukraine now was parliament, and that its head should be given power.

On May 22, 2024, the Geneva International Peace Research Institute (GIPRI), the Collectif de Juristes pour le Respect des Engagements Internationaux de la France (CJRF) and a group of international concerned citizens, submitted a legal brief to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Karim Khan requesting the opening of an investigation against Ursula von der Leyen for complicity in war crimes and genocide against Palestinian civilians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including the Gaza Strip.

This legal brief, endorsed by various human rights groups and prominent academics and experts in international criminal law, calls the Prosecutor to initiate investigations on the basis of the information provided against Mrs. Ursula von der Leyen. The latter has been repeatedly informed of violations of international humanitarian law committed in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, particularly in the Gaza Strip, through reports from international organizations and foreign governments. This is evidenced by a letter sent to her on February 14, 2024, by the President of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, and the then Irish Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar.[1]

Mrs Ursula von der Leyen is responsible for aiding and abetting the commission of crimes and violations of international humanitarian law, within the meaning of Article 25(3)(c) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Mrs von der Leyen enjoys no functional immunity before the International Criminal Court by virtue of Article 27 of the Rome Statute.

In recent years, Americans have been fleeing our largest cities in unprecedented numbers, and many of them have decided to settle down in quiet little towns all over the country.  There are many reasons why this is happening, and I will highlight several of them below.  If this trend continues, what will our major metropolitan areas look like?  Violence, theft, drugs, homelessness and international migration have all risen to crisis levels and are putting a tremendous amount of strain on our core urban areas.  Meanwhile, many small towns are absolutely booming as wave after wave of big city refugees comes pouring in.

Israeli and Egyptian forces exchanged fire across their border on May 26, in what appears to be an isolated incident that has caused an unknown number of casualties. The Egyptian Armed Forces have confirmed they are conducting an investigation into the incident, with the country having taken a neutral position in the ongoing conflict between Israel and various Palestinian militia groups. A number of sources have speculated that Egyptian forces mistook Israeli units for Palestinian militiamen, or else that Egyptian personnel on the ground opened fire without orders. Popular sentiment in Egypt has been strongly supportive of the Palestinian cause in spite of the state’s official neutrality. The incident follows an operation by an Egyptian police officer in June to infiltrate Israel, killing three Israeli soldiers, and comes after repeated warnings from Cairo that it will not tolerate moves by Tel Aviv to displace the Palestinian population of Gaza into the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula.

Egypt and Israel historically fought multiple wars from the mid-1940s to the early 1970s, before a new Egyptian administration under President Anwar Sadat realigned the country's foreign policy towards the Western Bloc and into a security partnership with Tel Aviv. Cairo would subsequently provide significant support to Israel’s war effort against its former ally Syria. After the death of President Sadat in 1981 relations cooled considerably, with the following decades widely described in Isreal as a period of “Cold Peace.” The perceived threat of Israeli military operations seeking to force the Gazan population onto Egyptian territory has threatened to again raise tensions between the two states. With the Egyptian Armed Forces today relying overwhelmingly on Western rather than Soviet equipment, however, they remain highly vulnerable to arms embargoes from Israel’s security partners. Western equipment acquired over the past 45 years has also been very heavily downgraded to guarantee an Israeli advantage.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have face growing difficulties employing Western-supplied precision guided weapons systems due to the growing effectiveness of Russian electronic warfare assets, according to interviews with personnel on the frontlines conducted by a number Western media outlets. Some of the most seriously affected munitions types have included Excalibur GPS-guided artillery shells, HIMARS rocked artillery systems, and JDAM precision guided bombs, with the former two in particular having taken a major toll on Russian forces when operating effectively in the past. Speaking to the Washington Post, an unnamed Ukrainian official claimed that the United States had completely ceased deliveries of Excalibur shells six months prior in late 2023 after Russian electronic warfare systems had rendered them ineffective. Despite its prior reputation as a “one shot, one target” weapon, which had led it's deployments to cause considerable concern among the leaders of Russian-aligned militia groups, the paper concluded: “the Excalibur technology in existing versions has lost its potential.” Encounters with Russian jamming were seen to have undermined its reputation.

On May 23 the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) initiated the Joint Sword-2024A combat exercises simulating major military strikes against targets on Taiwan. Separated from the Chinese mainland by a 130 kilometre straight, the island had since 1949 been under the control of the Republic of China government - one of two rival Chinese governments that fought in the country’s 22 year long civil war that was waged on the Chinese mainland from 1927 to 1949. Although both claim to be the sole legitimate authorities over the entire Chinese nation, however, the Taipei government lacks UN recognition and has diplomatic ties with only 11 of the UN’s 193 member states, with its status often compared to that of a non-state actor. Despite the civil war being technically ongoing, relations between Beijing and Taipei improved considerably preceding the election of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to power in the latter in 2015, after which closer security coordination with the Western world was pursued and significant indications were given that Taipei may make an unprecedented shift towards a declaration of independence and formal separation from China.

The Biden administration made clear on Tuesday that the Israeli bombing of a tent camp in Rafah that killed 45 displaced Palestinians, including many women and children, would not change US support for Israel.

Both the White House and the State Department claimed Israeli operations in Rafah are not the “full-scale” assault that the US claims it would oppose even as Israeli tanks push further into the city, and the UN says around one million Palestinians have fled Rafah.

“We still don’t believe that a major ground operation in Rafah is warranted. We still don’t want to see the Israelis, as we say, smash into Rafah with large units over large pieces of territory. We still believe that, and we haven’t seen that at this point,” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said. “As a result of this strike on Sunday, I have no policy changes to speak to.”

Spain, Norway, and Ireland formally recognized a Palestinian state on Tuesday, a move that doesn’t change the situation on the ground for Palestinians but is meant to pile on the international pressure on Israel.

The three European countries join over 140 nations that already recognize Palestine as a state. The recognition comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected the idea of Palestinian statehood in any future scenario.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in a televised address that “this is a historic decision that has a single goal, and that is to help Israelis and Palestinians achieve peace.”

A Ukrainian intelligence source told Reuters that a Ukrainian drone targeted a radar deep inside Russian territory that’s part of Russia’s early-warning system to detect nuclear missiles. The incident marks the second time within a week that Ukrainian officials reported attacks on a Russian nuclear warning system, known as “Voronezh M” radars.

The source said that the strike targeted a radar near the city of Orsk in Russia’s Orenburg Oblast, which is over 900 miles away from Ukrainian-held territory. The source didn’t say if there was any damage, and Russian media reported a drone was downed in the Orenburg region and that no civilian infrastructure was hit.

On May 22, a Ukrainian drone targeted a Voronezh M radar in Russia’s Krasnodar Oblast at a radar station about 300 miles from Ukrainian-controlled territory. The US-state-funded RFE/RL reported there was damage to the radar site, citing satellite images, although Reuters said it could not verify the imagery.

While the Russian radars can track missiles fired by Ukraine, the primary function of the early-warning system is to detect intercontinental ballistic missiles to determine if Russia is coming under a nuclear attack. Ukraine’s targeting of the systems could lead to a major response from Russia or potentially a miscalculation as the attacks come at a time of unprecedented nuclear tensions between Washington and Moscow.

The Biden administration is attempting to rally its allies to strengthen sanctions aimed at disrupting the relationship between Russia and China. Washington has increasingly attempted to use trade and financial blacklists to punish Beijing and Moscow for what the White House views as malign behavior, although with little success.

White House Deputy National Security Adviser For International Economics Daleep Singh made the threat on Tuesday. “To be clear, we have no desire to disrupt all trade between Russia and China, but we and our partners are prepared to use our sanctions and our export controls to prevent the trade of goods and technologies that threaten our collective security,” he said.

According to the US official, Washington and its allies are considering changing the language of existing sanctions to broaden their impact and placing secondary sanctions on organizations that violate the American blacklist.

On a misty November morning 21 years ago, I was desperately trying to remain camouflaged. Concealed in the foliage of an orange grove in Israel’s rural Galilee, I hurriedly took photos of a drab concrete building not marked on any map.

Even the original road sign identifying the site as Facility 1391 had been removed after a local Haaretz newspaper investigation revealed it housed a secret prison.

I was the first foreign journalist to track down Facility 1391, most of it hidden within a heavily fortified complex built in the 1930s to suppress resistance to British rule in Palestine.

For decades, Israel had secretly held mostly Arab foreign nationals captive at the site, unknown to the Israeli courts, the Red Cross and human rights groups. Many were Lebanese citizens kidnapped during Israel’s 18-year occupation of southern Lebanon. But there were also Jordanians, Syrians, Egyptians and Iranians.

This site would soon be known as a “black site”, a term popularised by Washington’s invasion of Iraq that year. Drawing on techniques refined by Israel at Facility 1391, the US would, in the coming months and years, torture Iraqis and others at Abu Ghraib and Camp X-Ray in Guantanamo.

No one knew how many captives were held in Israel’s Facility 1391, how long they had been there or if there were more such prisons.

Sometimes it seems as if we just can’t learn, even when we’re talking about America’s centers of higher learning, its colleges and universities. In mid-April — the day after being grilled and intimidated by House Republicans — Columbia University’s president Nemat “Minouche” Shafik decided not to listen to, or even negotiate with, her own students. Instead, she called in the police to dismantle a peaceful tent encampment protesting the horrors then underway in Gaza. For anyone who remembers the past history of on-campus antiwar protests, it was almost ludicrously predictable that, in doing so, she would launch a set of remarkably peaceful protests on more than 500 campuses nationwide that, despite the arrival of so many police on campus and nearly 3,000 arrests, have yet to end (and, in fact, have spread elsewhere on the planet).

And talking about not learning, imagine this: Last October 7th, the Israelis had a thoroughly grim set of war crimes committed against them by Hamas. Their response would prove to be a set of crimes so staggering that they’ve left Hamas’s horrors — and they were horrors of the first order — in the shade, removing almost all sympathy for Israel globally.

Sound familiar? And the thing we so often forget, whether the subject is Israel and Gaza or student protests in this country, is that when such horrors occur, there’s always a history that has, in some grim fashion, prepared the way for them.

With that in mind, consider Michael Gould-Wartofsky’s latest piece on the all too many increasingly armed camps that now pass for colleges and universities. Such campuses, barricaded, walled off, and sometimes occupied by local police, don’t come out of the blue either. In fact, Gould-Wartofsky has been writing about the creation of just such a “homeland security campus” for TomDispatch since 2008 — about the creation, that is, of what, by 2012, he was already calling Repress U.~ Tom Engelhardt

Israel's media has been concealing the difficult figures and pictures of the Gaza war. The latest announcement from the army about the Rafah strike should also be taken with skepticism. Unless you are a devoted consumer of Israeli media

It was reported on Monday afternoon that the Israel Defense Forces did not expect or estimate that civilians would be hit in the strike on Rafah. Such a disingenuous announcement can only be issued to consumers of the same media that for seven months has been hiding the unbearably difficult figures and photographs of toddlers who were killed or injured in every Israeli strike on the Gaza Strip. Such a statement can only persuade Israelis that this time too, the targets of the strike and the kind of munitions selected were scrupulously chosen by the Shin Bet security service, Military Intelligence and the IDF.

It's very possible that Israelis who don't support Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also would like to believe that this time, he was completely sincere when he said that this was a tragic mistake. It's also very possible that they won't suspect that he referred to it only because of the recent order to halt military operations in Rafah issued by the very International Court of Justice in The Hague that's hanging over his head and the heads of the Israeli judiciary.

According to the IDF Spokesperson's Unit, this strike had two targets: Yassin Abu Rabia and Khaled Al-Najjar. Abu Rabia was said to be Hamas' West Bank staff commander, and Al-Najjar was a senior staff officer. Both men were said to have carried out attacks in the early 2000s and transferred funds for terrorism. It was stated that Abu Rabia's attacks killed soldiers and Al-Najjar's attacks murdered Israeli civilians and wounded soldiers. By the way, it's the IDF Spokesperson's Unit that distinguishes between "killing soldiers" and "murdering civilians."

The Biden campaign faced nonstop heckles and jeers during a press conference outside the Manhattan criminal court where former President Donald Trump is listening to closing arguments in his hush money trial.

Joining Biden’s team were “special guests” Michael Fanone and Harry Dunn, two highly political and attention-seeking Jan. 6 Capitol police officers, and far-left actor Robert De Niro, who warned that Trump, if elected, “could destroy the world.”

The actor,  who arrived at the presser wearing a face mask, seemed angry and rattled by the cacophonous anti-Biden catcalls.

“I mean this is really … even these people over here are kinda … it’s kinda crazy,” De Niro complained when it was his turn to speak. “This thing, Donald Trump, has created this,” the actor added bitterly. “He should be telling them not to do this … but he wants to sow total chaos.”

Struggling to be heard over loud chants of  “f-ck Joe Biden!,” De Niro accused Trump of wanting “to destroy not only the city, but the country, and eventually, he could destroy the world.”

While Democrat U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas voted in favor of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, he also has family in law enforcement and, of course, supports police.

Those opposing forces were at play when three armed thugs carjacked Cuellar in Washington, D.C., last October. The congressman wasn't hurt, and his vehicle was recovered — but soft-on-crime approaches to law enforcement took a beating. Fox News said conservatives reacted to Cuellar's scary encounter with calls to confront rapidly rising crime in D.C.

'This chaos is the result of Democrat-led soft-on-crime policies, no different than their Open Border debacle.'

"Rep. Cuellar was carjacked near my same DC apartment building," GOP U.S. Rep. Burgess Owens of Utah posted at the time, according to Fox News. "This chaos is the result of Democrat-led, soft-on-crime policies, no different than their Open Border debacle. It's time for Democrats to start taking the safety of Americans seriously."

What's more, the National Republican Congressional Committee in March 2023 said 173 House Democrats supported reduced sentences for violent crimes.

Nikki Haley Visits Israel, Writes ‘Finish Them’ on Israeli Artillery Shell

Trump recently said that he's sure Haley will be on 'his team'

Former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley wrote “finish them” on an Israeli artillery shell during a visit to Israel to show her staunch support for the Israeli slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza and the Israeli bombing campaign in southern Lebanon.

“America stands by Israel. Israel is fighting the enemies of the US today. Don’t stop until you win,” Haley said during a visit to Israel’s northern border, where she signed the artillery shell.

Haley was accompanied by Danny Danon, a member of the Knesset and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party. Danon made headlines last November for co-authoring an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal that called for the US and other Western countries to take in Palestinian refugees, which would help facilitate the Netanyahu government’s desire to ethnically cleanse the Gaza Strip.

Haley visited southern Israel a day earlier and made a baseless claim that Iran, Russia, and China were all responsible for the October 7 Hamas attack. Without providing any evidence, she said the attack “was orchestrated by Iran. It was helped with Russian intelligence. And it was fueled by money from China. Don’t deny that.”

Haley, who served as the US ambassador to the UN during the Trump administration, endorsed former President Trump after dropping out of the presidential race. Trump recently hinted that Haley would have a spot in the next administration if he wins in November.

“I think she’s going to be on our team because we have a lot of the same ideas, the same thoughts,” Trump said after Haley said she would vote for him. “I appreciated what she said. You know, we had a nasty campaign, it was pretty nasty. But she’s a very capable person, and I’m sure she’s going to be on our team in some form, absolutely.”

Claire's Observations:IF Ambassador Hailey, and President Trump seriously believe this codswallop, indicated above, then the US and this world, are in for one hell of a ride come January of 2025:and I don't mean a pleasant one, either.

Does she not understand, that the primary targets of Israel's Killing machine, FKA the IDF, are primarily women and children?!? She's a mom herself, with a young boy and girl.    But her note of "Finish them", on the Israeli shells, most probably translates as dead and maimed for life for young Palestinians, particularly  the little ones, just on the cusp of death, courtesy of opportunistic bacteria and viruses.
