"There will be, in the next generation or so, a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude, and producing dictatorship without tears, so to speak, producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them, but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods. And this seems to be the final revolution" -- Aldous Huxley, 1931

A nuclear war would be anticlimactic

Before the angry comments begin, I don’t mean anticlimactic in the sense of I hoped for more, or that I am attempting to downplay death and destruction. Rather in a sense of it being nowhere near the grand apocalypse what we’ve come to expect. I grew up in the 1980s and the prevailing opinion was that any nuclear war would be “the last war”. Humanity would be wiped out, all major cities would be struck, the Earth would be rendered uninhabitable, etc. This is so deeply entrenched in people’s understanding of the world, it’s never really questioned.

There’s the quote often attributed to Albert Einstein:

I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

There are, however, a handful of variables that make this outcome extremely unlikely:

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake rocked the Big Island of Hawaii on Friday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reports. The earthquake, which struck 23 miles below sea level at coordinates of 19.188°N 155.493°W, happened at 12:06 p.m. at southwest Pahala.

Within the first hour of the earthquake, the quake could be felt as far as 280 miles away. According to the USGS Interactive Map, people in the northeast town of Kailua-Kona, which is about a 71-mile drive from Pahala, also felt the shaking.

Derek Nelson, the manager of the Kona Canoe Club restaurant in the oceanside community on the island’s western side, said of the quake, “It shook us bad to where it wobbled some knees a little bit. It shook all the windows in the village.”

In a recent development, Qin Gang, China's erstwhile foreign minister, has stepped down from his position in the national legislature, as reported by state media on Tuesday.

Qin's abrupt dismissal from his ministerial role in July last year marked one of the most unexpected political events in China in recent times.

Qin, 57, was in office for a mere seven months before he vanished from the public eye in June. The government subsequently announced his dismissal a month later, but he has not made any public appearances since then. Qin's role as foreign minister was taken over by his predecessor, Wang Yi.

The White House was slammed on Monday for releasing a woefully inadequate statement about the shocking murder of Laken Riley.

Police have charged Jose Ibarra, a 26-year-old Venezuelan immigrant living in the U.S. illegally, for murdering Riley, a 22-year-old Georgia college student, on the University of Georgia campus last week.

Court documents allege that Ibarra didn't simply kill Riley. Rather, police accuse him of "disfiguring her skull."

The heinous crime has brought increased attention to the border crisis and President Joe Biden's immigration policies, and the administration's response to Riley's murder isn't helping.

Swimsuit model Kristen Louelle Gaffney said that she angered feminists by saying women should take care of themselves physically, adding that men are receiving undeserved hate despite building the country.

Gaffney, a 2021 Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, says she came under fire for generally apolitical commentary she gave that was related to women exercising.

"Something I did not think was a hot topic, and it's not political, is I said women should take care of themselves physically. I said women should go to the gym. I said women should get their nails done, they should put some effort into their appearance, and it went viral and the comments were crazy," Gaffney told OutKick's Charly Arnolt.

The model also took shots at the political left, saying leftists have a lot of critiques of men yet are unable to concretely define a particular gender.

It all started with Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson's post on X over the weekend saying Riley's murder suspect is "one of the millions of illegal aliens that the Biden Administration simply released and unleashed upon our country" and demanding that the president close the border with Mexico.

Instead of taking the "L" and just scrolling on, Takei — not known for keeping his opinions to himself — decided to try fighting Johnson on X.

Takei, who played Sulu on the Starship Enterprise, would have been better off staying in sick bay. Here's how he responded to Johnson:

"I know your type of politician. Men like you smeared my community during World War II by preying upon people’s fears of others who didn’t look like them. It led to the internment and 125,000 shattered lives," Takei wrote to Johnson. "Never again."

Umm ... huh?

First off, Takei's statement doesn't at all address Riley's murder and that an illegal alien has been charged with it. Second — and perhaps most astonishing — Takei somehow managed to liken Johnson's demand that Biden close the border so illegal aliens can't enter the U.S. to what progressive Democrat President Franklin D. Roosevelt did to American citizens who happened to be of Japanese descent in World War II.

The latter was not lost on commenters, who rightly gave Takei a piece of their minds.

Last week’s testimony from Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and special prosecutor Nathan Wade about when their romantic relationship began appears to have been disproven, according to Wade’s cellphone records.

Both Willis and Wade testified under oath that their romantic relationship began in the Spring of 2022 and lasted until the Summer of 2023, months after Wade was hired on Nov. 1, 2021.

Attorneys for former President Donald Trump submitted a legal filing on Friday that included data collected from Wade’s phone through private investigator Charles Mittelstadt, who managed to obtain AT&T cellphone records for Wade via a subpoena.

Mittelstadt reported using CellHawk, an online tool that “is considered by law enforcement to be the gold standard in cellphone records analytics.”

The affidavit states that Willis and Wade called each other over 2,000 times during the first 11 months of 2021 and sent around 10,000 text messages.

According to the phone records, The data shows that Wade made “at least 35 visits to the Hapeville neighborhood where Fani Willis was living before the district attorney hired him to lead” the investigation.

US President Joe Biden said late Monday that he has hopes there will be a ceasefire in Gaza between Israel and Hamas by the end of the week. Strangely, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was reportedly “surprised” by Biden’s comments, according to a source who spoke to ABC News.

“Well I hope by the beginning of the weekend. I mean, the end of the weekend,” Biden told a reporter while visiting an ice cream parlor with late-night host Seth Meyers on Monday. “My national security adviser tells me that we’re close, we’re close but not done yet. And my hope is that by next Monday we will have a ceasefire.”
