The Military-Industrial Complex Is Killing Us All

by David Vine & Theresa Arriola

War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing. Or so the song lyrics go anyway.

But in the case of this country, war, it turns out, has been good for plenty of high-class Americans, especially our weapons makers. As TomDispatch regular David Vine and Theresa Arriola report today, the military-industrial-congressional complex (MIC) has proven to be a cash cow of the first order (though I hate to insult cows that way). In this century, the money has simply poured into it and yet, somehow, it never seems to be enough. Only recently, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell typically “ripped” President Biden’s request for $850 billion for the 2025 Pentagon budget as “inadequate” and demanded even more money for it. So, it goes — so, in fact, it has long gone.

And in a country in which the Pentagon budget and the far vaster national security budget only continue to rise, the oddest thing of all, it seems to me, is this: since the U.S. emerged victorious from World War II, no matter how much money it’s poured into the MIC or how many bases its military has established globally, in no significant war — from Korea in the early 1950s to Vietnam in the 1960s to the Afghan and Iraq wars of this century and the Global War on Terror that went with them — has this country ever (that’s right ever) emerged genuinely victorious.

Yes, the nation whose “defense” budget equals that of the next nine countries combined can’t win a war or stop pouring money into its military and the vast industrial combine that goes with it. Today, backed by an extraordinary set of original images related to the MIC that have never been published before (and can be seen in their original form here), Vine and Arriola offer a look at just what a disaster it’s proven to be for this country. ~ Tom Engelhardt

The Military-Industrial Complex Is Killing Us All

We need to talk about what bombs do in war. Bombs shred flesh. Bombs shatter bones. Bombs dismember. Bombs cause brains, lungs, and other organs to shake so violently they bleed, rupture, and cease functioning. Bombs injure. Bombs kill. Bombs destroy.

Bombs also make people rich.

When a bomb explodes, someone profits. And when someone profits, bombs claim more unseen victims. Every dollar spent on a bomb is a dollar not spent saving a life from a preventable death, a dollar not spent curing cancer, a dollar not spent educating children. That’s why, so long ago, retired five-star general and President Dwight D. Eisenhower rightly called spending on bombs and all things military a “theft.”

Israel's military operation in Gaza is a "strategic disaster," as support for the radical Palestinian movement Hamas among Gazans is actually increasing, Audrey Kurth Cronin, Director of the Carnegie Mellon Institute for Strategy and Technology, said in an op-ed for Foreign Affairs magazine.

Cronin argues that while the primary objective of Israel's operation in Gaza was to dismantle Hamas, the Israeli armed forces have merely reduced the number of Hamas fighters. According to the expert, a March 2024 opinion poll by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research showed support for Hamas among Gazans topping 50%, a 14-point rise since December 2023.

"Simply put, despite some tactical victories, the Israeli war in Gaza has been a strategic disaster," Cronin concludes. The expert attributes this situation to the conflict causing the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians, including women and children. Additionally, the increased support for Hamas is linked to Israel's restrictions on humanitarian aid to Gaza and the Israeli army's operations in the city of Rafah in southern Gaza.

Russian engineers are working tirelessly to bolster defenses against Ukrainian naval drones, also known as unmanned surface vehicles [USVs]. To achieve this, they’ve modernized the Soviet-era GShG-7.62 aviation machine gun, as reported by ANNA News. The updated machine gun is slated for installation on several warships.

The GShG-7.62 machine gun, inspired by the Gatling gun design, features a block of four rotating barrels. It boasts an astonishing maximum firing rate of 6,000 rounds per minute. There’s also an alternate rate, allowing it to fire 3,500 rounds per minute. This impressive rate of fire is powered by an electric gas drive.

However, such a rapid rate of fire presents challenges. After just eight seconds of continuous shooting [800 shots], the machine gun’s muzzle overheats and needs cooling. To address this, the electric gas drive was replaced with an electric one, reducing the firing rate to 300 rounds per minute. The Mash Agency detailed this modernization of the GShG-7.62.

On Wednesday, the Mixed Migration Centre (MMC) published a report that said Saudi Arabia is still slaughtering African migrants and Yemenis at its border with Yemen nearly a year after the indiscriminate killings were revealed.

In July 2023, MMC issued a report that said Saudi border guards killed nearly 800 Ethiopian migrants and wounded about 1,700 in 2022. Human Rights Watch followed up with a similar report that said the killings could be a “crime against humanity.”

After the reports were released, The New York Times reported that the US was aware of the mass killings on the border since 2022 but kept quiet. Around the time the US learned of the massacres, the Biden administration was publicly criticizing Riyadh for OPEC oil cuts.

The MMC’s new report says that new evidence “appears to indicate that the Saudi border authorities at their southern border with Yemen are continuing to use live weapons to fire indiscriminately at Ethiopians and Yemenis crossing the border irregularly.”

A ceasefire between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthis has held well since April 2022, but Yemeni media frequently reports Saudi shelling at the border in Yemen’s northern Saada province. Yemeni citizens and African migrants are often reported killed.

The news of Saudi Arabia’s continued killings at the border comes after reports said the US is planning to resume offensive weapons sales to Riyadh. The US is also pushing a Saudi-Israeli normalization deal that would involve Washington giving Riyadh a mutual defense guarantee.

A weapons stockpile reserve that the U.S. Defense Department uses to transfer military equipment to Israel lacks the necessary checks and balances, rigorous oversight, and transparency mechanisms needed to ensure responsible use.

Initially established after the 1973 Arab-Israeli War for emergency use, the reserve — officially referred to as the War Reserve Stockpile Allies-Israel (WRSA-I) — has evolved to include dual-use materials accessible by both U.S. and Israeli forces.

Despite this evolution, the stockpile, dispersed across multiple warehouses, lacks a public inventory and a legal framework to ensure transparent and accountable transfers of materiel. Bilateral agreements require Israel to cover storage and maintenance costs, but there’s no public policy guidance on transfers.

Significant withdrawals have been made for Israeli conflicts and U.S. military aid to Ukraine, often without public documentation. The legal basis for these transfers — Section 514 of the Foreign Assistance Act, the Arms Export Control Act, and various congressional transfer authorities — does not mandate comprehensive reporting to Congress, limiting oversight and accountability.

In 1946 reporter John Hersey published a harrowing report from Hiroshima that followed the travails of a number of survivors of the Bomb, including those of Father Wilhelm Kleinsorge, a Jesuit missionary from Germany.

On a search for water for some of the wounded, Kleinsorge came across a group of survivors

“…about twenty men, and they were all in exactly the same nightmarish state: their faces were wholly burned, their eye-sockets were hollow, the fluid from their melted eyes had run down their cheeks. (They must have had their faces upturned when the bomb went off; perhaps they were anti-aircraft personnel) Their mouths were mere swollen, pus-covered wounds, which they could not bear to stretch enough to admit the spout of the teapot.”

Passages such as these revealed the horrors Japanese survivors endured in the aftermath of the American nuclear attack. Hersey’s Hiroshima became, in the view of essayist Roger Angell, “part of our ceaseless thinking about world wars and nuclear holocaust.”And throughout the Cold War, the idea of fighting a nuclear war was anathema to the respective leaders of the American and Soviet superpowers — a revulsion that found its ultimate expression in the pledge made by Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev and U.S. President Ronald Reagan that “a nuclear cannot be won and should never be fought.”

Yet little by little, as the Cold War has receded into memory, American and Russian leaders have torn up a series of arms control measures beginning with the U.S. withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty (2002), the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces treaty (2019), and the Open Skies treaty (2020). For its part, in 2023 Russia unilaterally withdrew from both the Convention Armed Forces in Europe treaty and suspended participation in the landmark New START treaty.

And one of the more worrisome developments in a time which does not lack for them has been a worrying epidemic of loose talk about the use of nuclear weapons.

For much of the past year we had been pounding the table on two very simple facts:  not only has the US labor market been appallingly weak, with most of the jobs "gained" in 2023 and meant to signal how strong the Biden "recovery" has been, about to be revised away (as first the Philly Fed and now Bloomberg both admit), but more shockingly, all the job growth in the past few years has gone to illegal aliens.

We first pointed this out more than a year ago, and since then we have routinely repeated - again, again, and again - yet even though we made it abundantly clear what was happening...

Israeli Ministers Call for Escalation in Gaza and Invasion of Lebanon at Provocative Flag Day March

Participants in the march chanted 'death to Arabs' and attacked Palestinians by Dave DeCamp June 5, 2024 at 4:43 pm ET Categories NewsTags Israel, Palestine

On Wednesday, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir both called for Israel to escalate in Gaza and to invade southern Lebanon, The Times of Israel reported.

The two ministers made the remarks in speeches during the provocative flag march in the Old City of Jerusalem that commemorates Jerusalem Day, a celebration of the Israeli capture of East Jerusalem during the 1967 war.

Thousands of ultra-nationalist Israelis took part in the march, which involved chants of “Death to Arabs” and attacks on Palestinians. The crowd also attacked a journalist for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

During his speech, Ben Gvir led the crowd in a chant of “victory” and said Israel could only win once it “enters all of Gaza and fights until victory.” He also said Israel needs to “go into the north and fight Hezbollah and destroy them.”

Smotrich called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “give the order” to go to “war” with Hezbollah. “Let our heroic warriors win, restore our national honor, national pride, and security, and allow the heroic residents to return home safely,” he said.

Netanyahu on Wednesday signaled he was considering an invasion of Lebanon, saying that Israel was “prepared for a very intense operation” along the northern border.

Ben Gvir also declared on Wednesday that “his policy” was that Jews could pray at the al-Aqsa Mosque, known as Temple Mount to the Israelis, whenever they want, going against the status quo at the compound.

According to Haaretz, it marked the first time the Israeli minister in charge of security at al-Aqsa deviated from the status quo. In a radio interview, Ben Gvir said he was “pleased that Jews went to the Temple Mount and prayed there today. This is very important. My policy is very clear on this matter – Jews can go everywhere in Jerusalem and pray anywhere, and not silently. Jews prayed on the Temple Mount, that is the minister’s policy. Jews prayed on the Temple Mount, and that is good.”

Netanyahu: Israel Prepared for ‘Very Intense’ War With Lebanon

Army Chief Halevi says Israel nearing decision on launching war by Jason Ditz June 5, 2024 at 1:44 pm ET Categories News

Yesterday it was reported that Britain had informed the Lebanese government that it should prepare for a full-scale Israeli war by mid-month. This report now appears to be confirmed as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu talks up Israel’s readiness for such a war.

Following the war cabinet meeting, Netanyahu declared on Wednesday that Israel is prepared for a “very intense” operation against Lebanon, asserting that he would restore calm to the north of Israel one way or another.

For eight months, Israel and Hezbollah have been trading near daily fire across the border, and Israeli politicians have demanded a resolution as tens of thousands of civilians are being displaced by this military action.

War has been anticipated all year, but the starting point has moved closer, with Israeli Army Chief Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi reiterating that Israel is ready for an offensive, and that a decision point is at hand.

Lebanese PM Nijab Mikati claims reports of an imminent war are baseless, and that repeated media reports of Britain warning of the war are untrue. He added that he’s never been given any such warning.

Israeli airstrikes today continued to target motorcyclists across southern Lebanon, killing two riders in Naqoura with a drone attack. The slain were reported as Hezbollah members. A separate attack wounded three people, who were also identified as Hezbollah.

The United States and France have spent months trying to negotiate a settlement to prevent the war. The hope has been for both sides to cease firing and that Hezbollah relocate further north, resolving Israeli complaints about that organization’s presence right on the border.

Claire's Observation:  One has to wonder if Netanyahu and his minions are attempting to deflect public attention from Israel's genocide in Gaza (and  its continuing failure in in its destruction of Hamas) with the coming genocide in Lebanon.  Of course, the real "prize" for Israel's attempted "conquest" of this area, is the Litani River, a wonderful fresh water resource currently used by the Lebanese people, which is about 5  kilometers from the Israeli border.

Their problem is, too much has been seen, and witnessed to, courtesy of some very ballsy reporters, and very brave medical professionals attempting to keep wounded in Gaza in one piece; and once these images have been seen, cannot be unseen in the west.

The moment the current Israeli regime began to conflate "self-defence" with "genocide", they lost both me, and a lot of other staunch Israel supporters.  No country in its right mind, in this part of the 21st century, can get away with this, and Israel's leadership should have known that they were no exception; unfortunately, however, a certain degree of hubris, coupled with a sense of "Biblical entitlement", gave them their "raison d'etre" for performing this horrific abomination, and off they went.

And to the Israeli leadership; if your point is "eliminating Hamas and Hezbollah", WHY, please, are the preponderance of your victims women and children?  Please, I'm keen to know!!

Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti and attorneys general from 20 other states have called for significant revisions to the American Bar Association’s (ABA)  Standards and Rules of Procedure for the Approval of Law Schools.

The attorneys general claim in a letter that ABA standards direct law school administrators to violate both the Constitution and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibit employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin.

Their demand comes in response to the Supreme Court’s 2023 decision in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College (SFFA), which ended the use of so-called affirmative action in higher education.

The rule of law cannot long survive if the organization that accredits legal education requires every American law school to ignore the Constitution and civil rights law,” Mr. Skrmetti said in a press release announcing the action.

A new study shows that global excess death rates are continuing to soar among the Covid mRNA vaccinated, leaving so-called “experts” to claim they are “baffled” why so many people can die “despite the vaccines.”

study published Monday that analyzed statistics from ‘Our World in Data’ indicated that despite the alleged ‘savior‘ of Covid vaccines, excess deaths worldwide remain high.

“Excess mortality has remained high in the Western World for three consecutive years, despite the implementation of containment measures and COVID-19 vaccines,” the study said in the ‘Conclusion’ section.

“This raises serious concerns. Government leaders and policymakers need to thoroughly investigate underlying causes of persistent excess mortality.”

Interestingly, Monday’s study which looked at the entire global population is not the first piece of research analyzing mortality rates in recent years.

A Norwegian study published in January had also found an increase in non-Covid-related deaths.

After a double homicide shooting earlier this week, Swedish residents in Norrköping's district of Hageby can be searched or have their vehicles searched without the need for reasonable suspicion

Swedish police have introduced the first “stop-and-frisk-zone” in the country’s history, giving officers the power to search any individual or vehicle without the need for reasonable suspicion.

The draconian measure is in response to a double shooting on Monday evening in the Hageby residential district of Norrköping, a city southwest of Stockholm. Two men were pronounced dead at the scene.

As of Wednesday, the authorities are introducing what is also known as a security zone or visitation zone in the area as officers continue to hunt for perpetrators. A man in his 20s has already been arrested on suspicion of murder.

It is understood the police are holding a press conference later on Tuesday to explain the new powers available to them after the law was passed in April this year to help crack down on rampant gang crime.

When Bill Clinton ran for president in 1992, his campaign hired a sleazy private detective, Jack Palladino, to threaten journalists and private individuals in order to prevent voters from finding out about the horny hick’s legion of sexual conquests and sexual assaults—or “bimbo eruptions,” as campaign aide Betsey Wright charmingly put it.

The smear merchant was first hired after singer Gennifer Flowers told a tabloid she’d had a lengthy affair with Clinton. Palladino wrote a memo to the campaign, promising to impugn her “character and veracity until she is destroyed beyond all recognition.”

Clinton campaign: SOLD! (By the by, Clinton would eventually admit to having sex with Flowers.)

Then in 2008, presidential candidate John Edwards hit up a couple of well-heeled donors for more than a million dollars to hide his yearlong affair with Rielle Hunter and their resulting “love child.”

To keep Ms. Hunter happy (and hidden) throughout his run, the campaign gave her “cash, luxury hotels, private jets rides and a $20,000-a-month rental mansion in Santa Barbara, California”—as summarized by The Guardian. (Even lefty publications in the U.K. are more honest than the American media.)

Months later, after tens of thousands of Palestinians have been murdered by Israeli Occupation Forces in Gaza amid an ongoing genocide, and after thousands in the West Bank have found themselves imprisoned or under regular attack, sympathy for those resisting their own annihilation has grown, with the conversation becoming more clear than it was in the days proceeding October 7. As videos spread by resistance factions across Gaza and Lebanon find a regular and enthusiastic audience and chants in support of those putting their lives on the line take root in protests nationwide, it is clear many have grown to accept the necessity of armed struggle in the Palestinian context, though a true consensus has yet to be achieved.

To that end, the answer to the question “Do you condemn Hamas?,” particularly for those of us on the Left as we analyze the history of Palestine and why resistance occurs in a colonial context, should have always been clear.

Less than 48 hours after the world’s top court, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), ordered Israel to “immediately halt its military offensive and any other action” near the southernmost Gazan city of Rafah, Israel increased its deadly strikes on the already beleaguered area. Over Sunday night, Israel dropped massive bombs, including United States-made warheads, on an encampment of displaced civilians Israel had designated a “safe zone.”

At least 45 people were killed and 200 injured in the bombing and subsequent fires, most women and children. People were burnt beyond recognition and reduced to ash; in one video of the horrors, a man wordlessly held up a beheaded baby to the camera, the background ablaze.

This most recent attack is not Israel’s first defiance of the ICJ and basic human rights principles; nor, unfortunately, is it the last. Despite global outrage, Israel has continued to bombard Rafah in the days since. Indeed, over eight months, Israel has besieged and bombarded Gaza in a pattern of conduct that has amounted and continues to amount to genocide.

Genocide is among the most loaded charges one might levy. Often considered the “crime of crimes,” an aspiration to prevent genocide is in many ways foundational to the modern international legal system.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday criticized the West's delivery of long-range weapons to Ukraine, arguing Moscow could arm other countries with similar weapons to attack Western targets.

The comment — which Putin made at a rare press conference with foreign news outlets — came after several Western countries including the United States gave Ukraine the green light to strike targets inside Russia, a move Moscow has called a grave miscalculation.

"If someone thinks it is possible to supply such weapons to a warzone to attack our territory and create problems for us, why don't we have the right to supply weapons of the same class to regions of the world where there will be strikes on sensitive facilities of those [Western] countries," Putin said.

"That is, the response can be asymmetric. We will think about it," he told reporters.

In several exchanges with reporters this week, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller called on Hamas to end the suffering and deaths of innocent Palestinians in the war on Gaza by accepting a ceasefire, in remarks that have been criticised as leveraging collective punishment against the Palestinian group.

On Tuesday, Miller was asked during a press briefing about the terms of the latest ceasefire proposal and why Hamas would accept an agreement that would see the dissolution of the group itself.

The spokesperson responded, "because they don't want to see continued conflict, continued Palestinian people dying. They don't want to see war in Gaza".

The comments by Miller were criticised by legal experts, who say that Washington was admitting to using the collective punishment of Palestinian civilians as a bargaining chip against Hamas leadership.

Then on Wednesday, the issue was again brought up during a State Department press briefing

Claire's Observations:  Spox Miller, under WHAT rock, please have you been hiding recently, or was your understanding of  BOTH the Nuremberg Code and the UN Universal Rights of Man surgically removed while you were sleeping?!?  Using "collective punishment" of the Palestinian people (i.e., assassinating them, or starving them to death to get Hamas to "surrender")  is a war crime, and punishable as such.

Your leadership is complicit in these actions, and should be tried and convicted for such. You sir, are complicit in these actions.

Any questions, Spox Miller?!?

In a surprising turn of events, a juror in a federal trial about misused funds meant to feed hungry children during the COVID-19 pandemic was let go on Monday after being offered a $120,000 bribe. The 23-year-old juror, known as Juror 52, was not at home when an unknown woman left a bag filled with rolls of dollar bills at her house on Sunday night.

U.S. Assistant Attorney Joe Thompson told U.S. District Judge Nancy Brasel that the woman told the juror’s father-in-law that the money was “for Juror 52” and “there will be another bag for her if she votes to acquit.” When the juror got home and found out what happened, she quickly called the police.

The trial is about seven people accused of using a nonprofit called Feeding Our Future in a fraudulent way to steal $41 million, which is part of a bigger case involving 70 people. According to the Associated Press, 18 people have already admitted guilt.

Because of the claims of jury tampering and bribery, all seven people on trial in the Feeding Our Future case were taken into custody by the authorities. Judge Brasel stressed the need to keep the community safe, saying, “The fact that there are only seven defendants and only seven people other than their attorneys that have the information to get to a juror and bribe the juror doesn’t relieve me of the responsibility to protect the community.”

Jews are are the richest and most powerful people on earth by a virtually unbelievable margin. However, we can’t let that distract us from the fact that they are also somehow the most oppressed people on earth.

In a shocking and confounding twist, the degree to which they are oppressed is equal to the degree of their overwhelming wealth and influence.

We need to give them all kinds of special rights to prevent them from being oppressed even further. For example, we all have to chip in and pay for special police to protect them everywhere they go. Because they are so extraordinarily wealthy, they could simply pay for their own special police protection, but it would be an atrocity to make oppressed people pay for their own protection from oppression.

If any of this confuses you, I refer you to the Jewish-owned media for further information.
