Two right-wing groups in the European Parliament, the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) and the Identity and Democracy (ID), are currently in talks on merging and forming a new super group that could potentially become the second-largest in the legislature, an EU lawmaker told Sputnik.

Preliminary results of the June 6-9 elections show that ECR and ID have a combined total of about 130 votes. The vote has reshuffled the cards in the European Parliament, and the ID group, which is a home to the FPO, gained new partners, such as lawmakers from Portugal and Croatia, lawmaker from the Freedom Party of Austria (FPO), Roman Haider, said.

"As you know, we have a common group with the ECR in the Council of Europe. So why not in the EP? We are working on that, and we will see the outcome in three weeks' time. If we succeed in building a joint group, this group will overtake the socialist group and will be the second largest in the EP," Haider said.

Western leaders are doubling down on NATO's proxy war against Russia, with disastrous consequences for their domestic and international standing.

Volodymyr Zelensky and sponsoring his regime Western world leaders are gathering for a summit to discuss the country’s ongoing conflict with Russia at Switzerland’s Burgenstock Resort this weekend.

The sprawling compound, which boasts multiple five-star hotels and scenic views of Alpine landscapes, is known as one of the world’s top luxury mountain resorts. A spa and fine dining round out the amenities at the destination, known for hosting politicians, celebrities, and other high-profile guests.

But as Western leaders indulge themselves in grandeur, their ongoing support for Zelensky’s increasingly quixotic war effort is isolating them on the world stage and alienating them among their own people, according to author Jeremy Kuzmarov. The managing editor of Covert Action magazine joined Sputnik’s The Final Countdown program Friday to discuss Ukraine’s self-proclaimed “peace summit,” which has been ridiculed for not including representatives from Russia.

The Justice Department determined Friday that Attorney General Merrick Garland didn’t commit a crime by failing to produce audio of President Joe Biden’s conversation with special counsel Robert Hur.

House Republicans had demanded the tapes after Hur cleared Biden of mishandling classified documents. Hur’s report also highlighted Biden’s trouble remembering things, including the year his son died.

The determination comes after a memo from the DOJ’s Office of Legal Counsel said Biden’s claim of executive privilege over the tapes protected Attorney General Merrick Garland from prosecution. That memo came before Republicans approved a resolution to hold Garland in contempt of Congress this week.

In a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, Assistant Attorney General Carlos Felipe Uriarte said Garland did not commit a crime.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released thousands of migrants into the country despite risk assessments recommending they be detained, according to a newly released report.

ICE officers released 11,754 noncitizens from their custody despite receiving Risk Classification Assessments (RCA) that recommended they remain detained, according to a report by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General. The report determined that, for roughly 70% of the cases, ICE officers did not provide “sufficient justification” for their decision to release these noncitizens when their RCA recommended they be detained.

“The RCA process was designed to help ICE officers make informed, consistent, and transparent custody decisions,” the report concluded. “However, ICE officials did not consistently use the RCA process or act according to its recommendations.”

University of Missouri donors voiced feelings of dismay that they can no longer keep white students from applying for minority-related scholarships, according to an article Inside Higher Ed published on Thursday.

The Supreme Court of the United States struck down affirmative action for college admissions, and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey sent a letter following the decision in June 2023 to all of Missouri’s state, public and private universities, telling them they must comply with the court’s decision. Through Bailey’s letter, the four university system’s campuses were forced to revise all racially-based scholarships, creating hostility among donors.

“Institutions in Missouri must implement the Supreme Court’s decisions immediately. In today’s rulings, the Court held that there are no legitimate reliance interests created by past rulings that seemed to bless affirmative action,” according to Bailey’s letter.

The donors of several endowments expressed their concern both on and off the record, saying they feel “betrayed” by the change, according to Inside Higher Ed.

Former President Donald Trump called artificial intelligence “really powerful stuff,” despite being “a little bit scary,” and said the technology rewrote one of his speeches “so beautifully.”

“What it does is so crazy,” Trump said while appearing on social media influencer Logan Paul’s podcast “Impaulsive” on Thursday. “Now, it can also be really used for good. I mean, things can happen. I had a speech rewritten by AI.”

The former president and presumptive GOP presidential nominee said “one of the top people” showed him how AI could be used.

“He goes click, click, click, and like 15 seconds later he shows me my speech, written so beautifully, I said, ‘I’m gonna use this,’” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like it. It comes out with the most beautiful writing, so one industry I think that will be gone are these wonderful speechwriters. I’ve never seen anything like it, and so quickly. A manner of literally minutes, it’s done. It’s a little bit scary.”

In February, Trump called artificial intelligence “maybe the most dangerous thing out there” during an interview with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo.

During his interview on “Impaulsive,” Trump discussed his concerns about AI manipulating the perception of reality.
