Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi could be forgiven for thinking the United States has a schizoid view of his government and the world’s most populous country.

Modi’s narrow re-election this month was greeted in the U.S. media with petulant satisfaction that Indian voters had “woken up”, as an oped piece in the New York Times put it.

The Washington Post’s editorial board rebuked Modi with the headline: “In India, the voters have spoken. They do not want autocracy.”

The Post editors went on to say that Modi “will lack a free hand for further repression of civil society, imprisonment of the opposition, infiltration and takeover of democratic institutions, and persecution of Muslims.”

That is quite a withering rap sheet for a political leader who not so long ago was given the VIP treatment in Washington

Biden’s fawning over India culminated in the White House extravaganza for Modi last June when the U.S. media championed the “new heights” of U.S.-India relations. There were at the time residual complaints about India’s deteriorating democratic conditions under Modi, but such concerns were brushed aside by the sweep of media eulogizing, epitomized by Biden’s grandiloquent toasting of the U.S. and India as supposedly world-conquering democratic partners.

It was discernible though that all the American charm and indulgence was setting India up for an ulterior purpose.

Military officials have faced intense scrutiny over their failure to prevent the surprise Hamas attack last year.

The Israeli High Court of Justice has ordered the government to halt its investigation into intelligence failings in the lead-up to Hamas’ October 7 attack. The move comes after the court received classified briefings from security agencies, some of which have publicly opposed the probe.

In an interim ruling on Sunday, Justice Gila Canfy-Steinitz paused the investigation until the court can hear arguments from its opponents next month.

“In view of the complex security reality, the planned scope of the investigation, which will deal, among other things, with the combat support system and core operational issues, and the preparation required to respond to [the investigation] at the current time…I order the suspension of the investigation procedures in everything that relates to the IDF and [Shin Bet],” she wrote in her ruling, as quoted in Israeli media.

Launched in December by State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman, the probe sought to audit major security and intelligence failures ahead of Hamas’ deadly attack last year, which was not stopped despite a number of warnings. However, the investigation has faced opposition from a long line of top officials, among them Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Claire's Observations:  This investigation has been suspended, because the chain of guilt, runs all the way to the top of the government and that is what Netanyahu furiously wants to keep concealed, if he can.  The attack was deadly and despicable, and should be condemned by all civilized people; But that the IDF, Mossad, and the top politicians in the country, "... Didn't see this coming"?!?!?   Please, folks; give the rest of the world a break here!!

The Prime Minister plans to make future decisions about the war in Gaza with a small consultation group by Kyle Anzalone June 17, 2024 at 10:07 am ET Categories News

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dissolved the Israeli war cabinet after two of its six members left. The Israeli leader will form a small consultation body of the remaining four members to make decisions about the war in Gaza.

On Monday, Netanyahu disbanded the war cabinet after Benny Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot resigned from the body. The war cabinet was set up as a unity coalition in response to the October 7 attack to advise the Israeli leader on decisions about the war in Gaza.

However, Gantz and Netanyahu disagreed on potentially negotiating with Hamas to get the remaining Israeli hostages held in Gaza released. After Netanyahu effectively killed a ceasefire agreement that would see the release of the Israelis, Gantz and Eisenkot left the war cabinet.

Claire's Observations:  So now, Netanyahu is, essentially, calling all the shots, particularly with regard to Gaza?!?  This is not a good thing for Israel's potential future, and a death sentence, without judge or jury, for potentially thousands more Palestinians

There's been obvious escalation for several weeks at the Israel-Lebanon border, as we've been documenting. But on Sunday Israel's military issued one of the most dire alarms yet, saying it is on the brink of a full-scale war with Hezbollah.

"Hezbollah's increasing aggression is bringing us to the brink of what could be a wider escalation," the Israeli military’s chief spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, warned. "We are committed to the diplomatic process, however Hezbollah’s aggression is bringing us closer to a critical point in the decision-making regarding our military activities in Lebanon."

Anadolu/Getty Images: A plane tries to extinguish a fire after Hezbollah missile attacks on Safed city.

The statement was tailored largely in response to ongoing pressure from the Biden administration to avoid launching a bigger war at all costs.

The White House has repeatedly warned that escalation in Lebanon would neither be good for Israel nor for the region, and would risk a broader major war with Iran. There is also widespread acknowledgement that Hezbollah, the Shia paramilitary group backed by Iran, is much more powerful and better armed force than Hamas:

"Hezbollah is the crown jewel in the Iranian empire of terror and evil and is by far the most powerful Iranian proxy, equipped with nation state capabilities and even more firepower than several European countries have today," former IDF spokesman Jonathan Conricus told Fox News.

"In a military comparison, Hezbollah is far more powerful than Hamas," he added.

Earlier this month Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, "Whoever thinks he can hurt us and we will respond by sitting on our hands is making a big mistake." He had added at a time when massive fires were spreading in the north due to constant Hezbollah drone and missile attacks, "We are prepared for very intense action in the north."

The past several days have seen hundreds more missiles and drones launched by Hezbollah onto northern Israeli bases and settlements.

White House adviser Amos Hochstein has been meeting with Netanyahu in Jerusalem Monday to talk about the escalating crisis. The NY Times described the backdrop as follows: "Hezbollah’s attacks have gradually intensified, with the group using larger and more sophisticated weapons to strike more often and deeper beyond the border. Both sides have refrained from engaging in full-blown war, but the tension has increased in the past week.

Claire's Observations:  Yet another "regional war" to "nip off" part of Lebanon Israel wants because it wants the Litani River, only a few clicks away from the Israeli Border?!?  And when does Israel expect "US troops on the ground" in Israel to assist it?!?

Because so help me, Hieronymus Bosch, that will be going to be the "escalation" in Israel's push toward a larger regional war, including war against Syria and Iran.

But what happens if Russia gets annoyed because its regional BFF, Iran, gets attacked?!?  What will it be willing to do at that point, just sing Kumbyah?!?!?  I doubt that, very seriously.

In April 2022, Ukraine and Russia were on the brink of signing a deal to end the war just weeks after it began. The New York Times published documents showing President Vladimir Putin was willing to make concessions to get an agreement signed.

According to the documents, Putin initially sought to have Kiev recognize Moscow’s 2014 annexation of Crimea. However, a draft agreement from April 15, 2022, suggests both parties were prepared to set aside the issue to end the conflict. "Paragraph 1 of Article 2 and Articles 4, 5, and 11 of this Treaty shall not apply to Crimea and Sevastopol," the document says.

In December, Ukrainian negotiator Oleksandr Chalyi explained that an agreement was reached in the spring of 2022, stating the two sides "managed to find a very real compromise. We were very close in the middle of April, in the end of April, to finalize our war with some peaceful settlement."

Claire's Observations:  this is disgusting and horrific; how many have had to die, or be maimed for life, because this proposal was NOT accepted, courtesy of the US government?  I am certain, an almost unbelievable number on both sides.

One burning question following the European parliamentary elections that concluded on June 9: how did Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s ruling Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy – Fd’I) perform so well despite the following:

  1. lousy economy. That’s the norm in Italy, but…
  2. It was made even worse by Project Ukraine, of which Meloni has been a big backer and to which the Italian public is largely opposed.

For comparison’s sake, in Germany, which is the first industrial location in Europe while Italy is the second, the ruling coalition was absolutely hammered. Italy may not have suffered through the humiliation Germany has with the Nord Stream affair, but the economic carnage is similar.

Here are some possibilities why Meloni and company emerged strengthened from the EU elections.

This weekend wasn't great for the Biden campaign - after a viral video showed the president 'freezing' on stage during a star-studded 'weekend at Biden's' event in LA, and a Secret Service agent getting robbed at gunpoint that same night. Oh, and then Biden had a nursing home outburst at reporters. And to top it all off, Spox Karine Jean-Pierre wants us to believe recent videos of Biden are deepfakes.

If we're to start this out properly, on Thursday, Biden wandered off during a G7 flag ceremony when he was supposed to participate in a group photograph with a bunch of European leaders who just got their clocks cleaned in last week's election.

Claire's Observations:  I could laugh at all this, were it not so absolutely pathetic.  And with By-di-Bye, the problem, as always, is.....stopping laughing.

The other world leaders understand, very fully, that the alleged "Leader of the Free World" (whatever that means in 21st century America) is deteriorating badly, mentally and physically, and right before the world's eyes, in a live-stream meltdown.

As a volunteer for my church, I regularly visit with a number of people at an assisted living facility, very close by, which has a locked dementia ward. The signs and symptoms of dementia are both classic, and unmistakable with Biden.

And no matter WHAT his docs "shoot him up with" in preparation for the first debate at the end of June, it will not possibly be enough to get a "win" against Trump.

Were I a betting woman, I would bet that we will see some kind of "national emergency" fabricated right around that time of the month, to "excuse" Biden from participating, and distract the American public.

Israel's defense ministry said in a statement on Monday that its arms exports for 2023 hit a record in sales, as Israel's war in Gaza enters its ninth month and as the country's military continues to be supplied with hundreds of millions of dollars in American weapons.

The report by the defense ministry said that the total exports of Israeli arms reached $13.1bn in 2022, an increase of $500m from the previous year and double the amount of exports from five years ago. More than a third of the sales comprised missiles, rockets and air-defense systems, with one of the biggest contracts of 2023 being with Germany, which signed a deal to purchase the Arrow 3 long-range air defense system for around $4bn.

Claire's Observations:  The Israeli weapons industry, collectively, needs a new image.

How about a TV spot,  (read with a voice sounding like that of a boxing announcer) saying,  "Slaughtermania; the best weapons you can buy, if you need a genocide through which to cull your undesirables", showing graphic images of women and children murdered or maimed for life, courtesy of Israeli weapons  That ought to work, right?!?

Authored by Jonathan Draeger via RealClearPolitics,

One of the defining features of former President Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign was his – at least at the time – unorthodox opinions on trade. With the notable exception of Bernie Sanders, the other candidates parroted the longstanding bipartisan consensus on free trade. Trump promoted protectionist policies and tariffs.

We can’t continue to allow China to rape our country, and that’s what they’re doing. It’s the greatest theft in the history of the world,” Trump said at a 2016 campaign rally in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In his remarks on the campaign trail, you could hear echoes of his interviews from the 1980s, where he aired his frustration with how the United States handled trade, specifically regarding Japan and the Middle East. “I think a lot of people are tired of watching other countries ripping of the United States” he said. “This is a great country. [Other nations] laugh at us behind our back, they laugh at us because of our own stupidity.”

Now his protectionist views have become mainstream. President Biden recently imposed a fresh set of tariffs on China, including 25% on steel, aluminum, batteries, ship-to-shore cranes, and some medical products, 50% on semiconductors and solar cells, and 100% on electric vehicles.

Before Trump came along, the prevailing wisdom on trade was that free trade and low-to-no tariffs was the best policy to bolster the global economy, including that of the United States. The North American Free Trade Agreement was first envisioned by Ronald Reagan, introduced by George H.W. Bush, and signed into law by Bill Clinton. Ross Perot objected vociferously to NAFTA, but he finished third in 1992 and 1996, and the issue was settled – or so it seemed, based on the presidents who followed Clinton.

Zelensky celebrated his country’s new security pact with the US on Thursday as “bring[ing] our relations to the level of a true alliance”, but the reality is that it’s just a consolation for the US not approving Ukraine’s NATO membership, which would give it much more meaningful mutual defense commitments. The full text can be read here while the fact sheet can be read here, and upon doing so, the reader will learn that the US is simply formalizing the support that it’s been giving Ukraine since February 2022.

There’s no obligation for the US to dispatch troops to Ukraine if it enters into another round of hostilities with Russia sometime after the ongoing one finally ends. To be sure, NATO’s Article 5 doesn’t obligate the same either, but the US would be under much more pressure to directly aid Ukraine if it were an official military ally, which is why Russia was always so strongly opposed to that country’s membership. The latest pact therefore just maintains Ukraine’s role as NATO’s anti-Russian proxy.

As was observed in mid-January after Ukraine reached its first such agreement with the UK, “Ukraine’s Hoped-For ‘Security Guarantees’ Aren’t All That They Were Hyped Up To Be”. The precedent established by that pact set the stage for all those that followed, including this latest one with the US. The bombshell that Biden dropped in early June about how peace in Ukraine “doesn’t mean NATO, they are part of NATO”, leaves no doubt that the US prefers keeping that country outside of the bloc.

There has not been a global war since the 1940s, and now nations all over the planet are armed to the teeth with weapons of immense destructive power.  Everyone knows that it is just a matter of time before global conflict turns our world upside down, and once that happens everything will change.  If you think that economic conditions are bad now, just wait until war paralyzes global trade.  If you think that global hunger is bad now, just wait until war absolutely devastates global food production.  War will be one of the primary elements of the “perfect storm” that we are now facing, and it will have a dramatic impact on many of the other elements.
