Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has strongly condemned the violence in the country's Punjab province in which nine people, including six women, were killed and dozens injured after two rival groups fought with guns and sticks, media reports said Sunday.
He said a preliminary investigation showed there was no desecration of the Holy Quran. "It was just a rumour which was exploited by anti-state elements to create chaos."
There has always been a history of religious clashes between Christians and Muslims in Pakistan which have turned fatal.
What is interesting here is the timing, at a point where Pakistan is becoming the next target in the sites of the US's "war on terror".
