Out of Whack

Obamacare is the name given a law that says you must buy overpriced private health insurance from companies that fund election campaigns. Yes, it's got some lipstick on it, but compared to a civilized healthcare system like other wealthy nations use it's awful. But how awful? Surely not as awful as . . .

CHICAGO TO TAX NETFLIX AND OTHER ONLINE MOVIES AND MUSIC TO HELP COVER GROWING DEFICIT CREATED BY FAILED POLICIES

Politicians get elected by making expensive, grandiose promises that are virtually impossible to fund. The voters, excited by the politicians promises, elect said politician, who proceeds to gleefully waste the money of the taxpayers on frivolous things. Then, when the inevitable budget shortfall rears its ugly head, they strong-arm the public into supporting tax increases by blaming the deficit on those who are principally opposed to tax increases and by threatening to cut funding for more popular public programs like education and the fire department. You can watch this cycle play out again and again. Maybe one day we’ll break it, but that day isn’t today.

It’s almost impossible to keep anything secret these days – not even the core text of a hyper-secret trade deal, the Trade in Services Agreement (TiSA), which has spent the last two years taking shape behind the hermetically sealed doors of highly secure locations around the world. According to the agreement’s provisional text, the document is supposed to remain confidential and concealed from public view for at least five years after being signed! But now, thanks to WikiLeaks, it has seeped to the surface.

Tax Analysts Sues IRS Over Executive Bonus Awards Records

Tax Analysts filed suit against the IRS on June 23, asking the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to compel the agency to release records of bonus awards it paid to high-level executives since 2010.

Tax Analysts originally requested the bonus awards records in early February through a Freedom of Information Act filing, but the IRS has not said when or whether it would comply with the request.

"It's déjà vu all over again," said Tax Analysts President and Publisher Christopher Bergin. "We've been at this game a long time. They've delayed and delayed and delayed and delayed, and they will continue to delay. And we think this is important information to keep them transparent and to keep them accountable.

Supreme Court approves Obamacare subsidies on HealthCare.gov

Obamacare just survived a potentially fatal heart attack.

In a major decision, the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday ruled in a 6-3 decision that the federal subsidies that help nearly 6.4 million people pay for their Obamacare health plans are legal under the Affordable Care Act.

The ruling avoids what many analysts predicted would be a nightmare scenario if the plaintiffs had won: individual plan insurance prices skyrocketing in two-thirds of the United States, and the loss of health coverage for upwards of 8 million people in states served by the federal insurance marketplace HealthCare.gov by next year.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The plan prices are already skyrocketing. All the argument is about is over who gets stuck with the bill!

IRS breaking federal law in paying contracts to tax cheats: audit

The IRS has been paying millions to tax-cheat contractors who owe millions of dollars in debt to the federal government, the agency’s inspector general said in a report Wednesday that said the payments even break federal law.

Officials awarded $18.8 million in contracts to 17 companies with tax debts in 2012 and 2013 — despite a 2012 law that said contractors had to be caught up on their payments in order to do business with the agency.

The embattled agency doesn’t even bother to check whether contractors are up to date in their taxes, the audit found.

Buried in Supreme Court rulings, legal minutia, tax code jargon, and the minutes from Congressional hearings is the truth that the what is commonly referred to as the income tax is meant to be a simple excise tax levied on those benefiting in some way from a federal privilege.

This means that government workers and office-holders, federal reserve bankers, subsidy recipients, investors in federal corporations, and any other person benefiting from the profitable exercise of federal privilege were meant to pay the tax, NOT independent hard-working American citizens.

Showdown Between Judge Sullivan and IRS This Week…Expect Fireworks and Possible Criminal Charges

Let’s begin with the emails that traveled between the IRS and the White House. I suggest you duct tape your head before continuing to read. The IRS sent emails to the White House containing confidential taxpayer information. Congress wants those emails as well as Cause of Action, who filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for them. Sending out taxpayer’s confidential information is a federal crime. So, when will the emails be handed over? Never. Jacob Lew of the Treasury Department refuses to turn them over because………….drum roll, please. They contain confidential taxpayer information. Duh!

Those emails are proof that a federal crime was committed. The IRS refuses to turn their copies over, the White House, through the Treasury Department refuses to turn their copies over and the Department of Justice has refused to investigate. Obama says Supreme Court should never have taken up health law case, in blunt challenge

President Obama bluntly challenged the Supreme Court over a pending ruling on the validity of ObamaCare subsidies, complaining Monday that the court should never have taken up the case -- and warning that a ruling against subsidies would be a "twisted interpretation" of the law.

The president and his administration's legal team for months have fought the Affordable Care Act court challenge, which is over whether people who enrolled through the federal HealthCare.gov are entitled to subsidies.

But the president's comments on Monday, during a press conference on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in Germany, were perhaps his toughest to date. He strongly suggested the court would be running afoul of established legal guidance if it rules against the administration, and took the rare step of saying the court should have stayed out of this fight.

Microsoft And The IRS Are Fighting Again

Microsoft Corp. and the IRS are back in court, this time fighting about the U.S. tax agency’s interest in hiring David Boies, the lawyer who beat Microsoft in an antitrust case in 2000.

The software company filed a federal lawsuit May 29 in Seattle, marking the latest legal flurry over an ongoing Internal Revenue Service audit. At issue are “tens of billions of dollars” in corporate income, according to the IRS.

Microsoft is asking a court to enforce its public-records request for documents on the government’s decision to enter into a contract with Boies Schiller & Flexner LLP in 2013.

Besides the possible return of Boies as a Microsoft adversary, the case is notable because of its size and the amount of public legal wrangling even before the IRS completes its audit. Microsoft has questioned the IRS’s decision to use outside lawyers and amend its regulations to allow non-government employees to question witnesses under oath.

What Does U.S. Treasury Do With Vaccine Excise Taxes It Collects?

By Catherine J. Frompovich

Earlier this year I started to research what’s known as the “Vaccine Injury Trust Fund,” a “stash” of cash collected on every vaccine sold and given to children and adults in the USA.

That Trust Fund is “financed” by a $0.75 excise tax on each vaccine active recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. On multi-valent vaccines, i.e., those containing more than one disease active e.g., trivalent vaccines like MMR, DTaP, etc., then 75 cents is paid for each valent, or a total of $2.25 for a 3-valent vaccine.

Now, here’s an interesting aspect: The U.S. Department of Treasury collects those excise taxes and also manages the Trust Fund’s investments. Investments? Sounds like there should be quite a stash in that Trust Fund portfolio...

"And while the IRS mercilessly pursues average Americans, they permit tax cheats such as Rev. Al Sharpton, who owes the IRS at least $4 million in taxes, to have access to the Obama White House and other parts of the administration. It's believed he's being let off because he has a TV show on MSNBC on which he echoes the Obama White House propaganda and talking points" Baker alleges.

McDonald's 'has avoided paying £658million tax in Europe after moving European headquarters to Switzerland': Fast food giant risks millions in back payments

Fast food giant McDonald's could be the latest American blue-chip company to face allegations it avoiding paying taxes in Europe.

Trade unions have complained to the EU competition commissioner that the burger chain avoided paying more than £658million in corporate taxes between 2009 and 2013.

If proven the claims are set to spark another furious backlash against large US companies which rake in millions of pounds of sales in Britain and Europe without paying the same level of taxes as home-grown rivals.

Government Using Subprime Mortgages to Pump Housing Recovery – Taxpayers will Pay Again

It seems hard to believe, but your government is purposely recreating the mortgage debacle of 2007 and putting you on the hook for the billions in losses coming down the road. Secrecy Over TPP Fuels Growing Opposition in Congress

The back-room push for the corporate-friendly Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade pact may be backfiring on its supporters, as more and more lawmakers in U.S. Congress drop their interest in the deal over its extreme secrecy.

As a new report from Politico published Monday details, "If you’re a member who wants to read the text, you’ve got to go to a room in the basement of the Capitol Visitor Center and be handed it one section at a time, watched over as you read, and forced to hand over any notes you make before leaving."

IRS tells woman that she’s legally dead

Benjamin Franklin once wrote, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Those famous words came to mind after I spoke with Sarah Jewell, 25, from Sparta. Like most hardworking Americans, the pharmacy technician filed her tax return in February. However, instead of a refund, the IRS sent her a letter that said she was dead.

The letter read “that my Social Security number was coming up that I was deceased,” Jewell said. It just about took her breath away when she found out she’s dead. Obviously, the problem is that she’s still alive.

IRS Seeks To Tax $50k Raised From GoFundMe For Cancer Treatment For Car Crash Victim

In the last two years, Casey has traveled to Maryland and Louisiana for treatment, and received chemotherapy and radiation here in Omaha as well. So far, efforts to find ‘Casey’s Cure’ have shown little progress; the cancer is still there. ...

Just weeks ago, Casey and her family began a new battle. “Two years later, we get a letter saying we owed like $20,000 in taxes,” said Casey. March 30, 2015, the IRS notified the Charfs that what they’d collected through the GoFundMe account should’ve been claimed as income. Of the nearly $50,000 the government wants $15,457 in back taxes, and another $3,676 in penalties and interest. In total, the letter indicates the Charfs owe the IRS $19,133 by April 29th. “We've already used that money for my doctors’ bills and everything that I've needed,” said Casey. “It's donations, it's not income. So how can they tax you on that? I don't get it.”

IRS attacks conservative groups but silent on Clinton Foundation

In the midst of the news media coverage of the Hillary Clinton emails, her private Internet server, her thumbing her nose at government regulations and allegations that her and her husband's "charity" was involved in shady deals, no one except for public-interest groups is asking about an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) investigation. There are several allegations that the Clinton Foundation is nothing more than a sophisticated and elaborate political slush fund, according to news stories on Monday.

More than one group that was targeted by the IRS for daring to be conservative believes that if there ever was an organization that should be investigated and audited by the IRS it's the Clinton Foundation. The Clintons possess a talent for making incriminating documents disappear and Americans are warned to not hold their breath waiting for the IRS or the Justice Department investigate the Clintons and their arguably corrupt foundation.

Obamacare: AMAC Says The ‘Silence is Deafening’ As We Await Its Fate

“You don’t hear many people talking about the Affordable Care Act these days. It appears interest in Obamacare has dwindled to perhaps its lowest level in the five years since Obamacare was born in 2010. Is it because opponents and proponents of the law are holding their collective breath in anticipation? There’s a lot at stake. If the justices rule that federal subsidies are legit, it’ll be business as usual but if they deny subsidies it will be a devastating blow to the law as it stands,” Weber said.

But the fact is that, behind the scenes, the new Congress has been working on a “course correction” that has its origins well before the enactment of Obamacare.

House Report: IRS ‘Deliberately’ Cut Customer Service to Make Tax Season Painful for Taxpayers

During the 2015 tax-filing season, the IRS provided what its own Commissioner described as “abysmal” customer service, blaming skyrocketing wait times for telephone and in-person assistance on agency budget cuts. The IRS even called budget cuts “a tax cut for tax cheats.” But a close review of the agency’s spending shows the IRS deliberately cut $134 million in funding for customer service to pay for other activities. Spending decisions entirely under the IRS’s control led to 16 million fewer taxpayers receiving IRS assistance this filling season. Other spending choices, including prioritizing employee bonuses...

NY Times: Would You Let The IRS Prepare Your Taxes?

Around this time every year, Joseph Bankman, a professor of tax law at Stanford Law School and a longtime advocate of using technology to simplify tax filing, gets on the phone with reporters to explain what is wrong with how we do our taxes in the United States. Every year he says pretty much the same thing: No other industrialized country asks its citizens to jump through as many hoops to calculate their taxes as ours.

It isn’t just lawmakers or the hapless-seeming Internal Revenue Service that is perpetuating the annoyance of tax time, he adds. Instead it is the private sector — specifically, the software company Intuit, which makes TurboTax, the most popular tax program in the country.

For more than a decade, Mr. Bankman and a small group of tax experts have called on the government to create a tax preparation method that they say would vastly reduce the time and cost of tax-filing for most people. Intuit has been a primary obstacle to the effort.

Republicans Push $269 Billion Handout For Millionaire Heirs And Heiresses

House Republicans this week will vote to hand the heirs and heiresses of America's largest fortunes a $269 billion tax break by repealing the federal inheritance tax.

The legislation would shield the very richest families from taxes on the fortunes they inherit. After years of GOP attacks on the inheritance tax, also known as the estate tax, only a few thousand of the wealthiest families are subjected to it -- 4,700 total in 2013, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation. Only individual fortunes worth over $5.43 million can be taxed under current law, an amount that doubles to $10.86 million for wealthy couples. The Republican proposal would eliminate all of these estates -- which are over 15,700 percent richer than the median American household -- from taxation.

Press Release - Tax Day - We Refuse to Pay for War and Weapons

“Dear IRS”
We Refuse to Pay for War and Weapons

“We cannot in conscience pay for the killing of other human beings or pay for war and preparations for war.”

“I’m not technically turning them away yet,” Concha explained. “I’m letting them know it may not be in their interest to wait three to four hours to see someone.”

With Tax Day approaching, it was the best the IRS could offer.

More Unofficial Capital Controls: PFIC Rules

By Nick Giambruno, Senior Editor
Casey Research

It ranks at the very top of potential tax nightmares, especially if you invest internationally.

This nightmare could become a reality if you happen to invest in what the IRS deems a Passive Foreign Investment Company (PFIC), which are taxed at exorbitant rates and have highly complex reporting rules. Most foreign mutual funds are PFICs, as are certain foreign stocks.

It’s not illegal to invest in a PFIC, but practically speaking, the costs of doing it are so incredibly onerous that it’s prohibitively expensive in the vast majority of cases.

PFIC rules amount to unofficial restrictions on investing in certain foreign assets and are yet another indicator of the disturbing trend of creeping capital controls in the US...

IRS chief to GOP: You can't abolish us

The IRS commissioner on Tuesday brushed aside GOP proposals to abolish his agency, insisting the U.S. would have to have a tax collector one way or another.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The arrogance is staggering. First off, the Constitution bans non-apportioned direct taxation on the people, and that provision has never been repealed. Awareness that the 16th Amendment was not actually ratified is starting to gain traction among a population now aware that the government lies about everything! When this nation was founded, taxes were collected from businesses, tariffs, and import duties, which did not require a massive bureaucracy prying into the lives of every citizen.

Yes, the IRS can be abolished (along with the personal income tax).

Thanks to the dirty tricks and heavy hands of the authoritarian federal government, she may be incarcerated very soon. Denied her basic rights in the court of law, Doreen Hendrickson was convicted of contempt of court on July 25, 2014.

Her tale is certainly unusual.

Doreen Hendrickson, along with her husband Pete, are libertarian activists who file tax returns in an unconventional way and encourage others to do the same. Because of this, Doreen was charged by the federal government with defying two court orders.

Over the last three years the BBC has secretly obtained millions of pounds in grants from the European Union. Licence fee payers might assume that the Corporation would have been compelled to disclose the source of this money in its annual reports, but they bear no trace of it specifically. In the latest set of accounts, for example, these funds are simply referred to as ‘other grant income’.

Dem senators warn Obamacare rule 'particularly harmful and disruptive'

Six Democratic senators and one independent have asked the Department of Health and Human Services to a delay a new rule that would likely force small businesses to pay more for employee health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare. The senators warn that if the administration goes ahead with the change it would be "particularly harmful and disruptive" to small businesses.

Starting in 2016, the Obamacare change will require businesses that employ between 51-100 people to purchase insurance in what the government defines as the "small group market," rather than the market for large group plans. The senators warn that the change will inflate health care costs for those businesses.

Blood Money: These Companies and People Make Billions of Dollars From War

Despite warnings of its existence and imminent expansion, the military-industrial complex (or military-industrial-congressional complex) remains in operation today. It is an iron triangle that comprises the policy and monetary relationships which exist between legislators, national armed forces, and the arms industry that supports them. These relationships include political contributions, political approval for military spending, lobbying to support bureaucracies, and oversight of the industry.

It is a major reason we are stuck in a perpetual war.

George Osborne’s Budget will threaten workers' retirement funds with 55% stealth tax

Analysts say proposals in Chancellor George Osborne’s Budget will hit not just the rich, but also those on more modest incomes.

Mr Osborne claimed a move to lower the “lifetime allowance” – the maximum that can be saved into a pension pot before a 55 per cent penal tax kicks in – from £1.25million to £1million, would affect “fewer than four per cent” of people. But experts argue that the allowance has now almost halved from £1.8million since 2010 and the tax will hit older savers who have built up their pension pots over many years.

Greg Kingston, of Suffolk Life, part of Legal & General, said: “Even a 21-year-old on the forthcoming higher minimum wage of £6.70 per hour who works a 35-hour week and puts 20 per cent of their earnings into a pension, by the time they are 67, could easily have reached this limit.”

Stephen King: Maine governor should 'man up and apologize'

Stephen King says Maine Gov. Paul LePage should "man up and apologize" after the governor claimed the author has moved away and doesn't pay income taxes in Maine.

LePage used his radio address this week to make his case for eliminating Maine's income tax. He said states without an income tax, such as Florida, have lured away Maine residents, including King.

King spends winters in Florida but told the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1Bb7e3i ) on Friday that he and his wife paid about $1.4 million in Maine state taxes in 2013 and figured it was about the same for 2014.

King says his foundation also gives $3 to $5 million grants annually, mostly in Maine.

Tax returns exiting U.K., but don’t expect it in U.S.

As tax season goes into the stretch, think of what life might be like if, well, if there wasn’t one.

What if the “madness” in March conjured only visions of college hoops, not pretax return anxiety? Imagine April 15 being just another day. And H&R Block? Poof.

That’s not likely to happen here, but it’s what the U.K. is shooting for as Britain plans to push forward a new system in which very few, if any, of the isles’ 30 million or so income-tax payers would have to file a complex annual return. In its budget plan recently submitted to Parliament, the nation’s ruling Conservative Party is looking to essentially eliminate tax returns within the next half-decade.

Fear of IRS Tax Audits Diminish

The announcement that Federal government’s tax-take hits all-time high as the federal government collected a record amount of taxes in fiscal year 2014, topping $3 trillion in revenue for the first time in its history, has the tax man taking a bigger bite than ever. Yet, the take that the collection bureau seems un-phased from all their scandals to put the taxpayer through their third degree audits are easing up. Why? The answer may surprise when the ledger is tallied up.

EU calls for tracking computers in all vehicles to monitor, regulate travel

The controlling surveillance state is deepening, prying further into people's lives like a chisel carving its way through skin and bone. Governments have become opportunistic control freaks, centralizing their micromanagement powers whenever possible. Now the European Union is rolling out plans to monitor travel on all European roads, tracking drivers' mileages and time traveled per vehicle. This controlling scheme is not for surveillance alone; it's essentially a plan to tax every driver for the for the distance they travel on European roads.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Of course, people in Europe (and the US) are already taxed for the miles they drive with taxes on gasoline and tires. The more you drive the more you pay in those existing taxes. Adding another mileage tax (along with more surveillance) means people will be less likely to go shopping, or go to a restaurant, or theater, or sporting event, or tourist destination, meaning more of those businesses will be shut down. In the long term, adding more taxes will mean less tax revenue overall.

‘Idle Car’ Bill in NY Pays Citizens to Record, Snitch on Drivers

(Truthstream Media.com) Environmental offenses are carrying increasingly heavy prices, as the 21st Century tends towards tightly controlled urban living.

Cities like New York are now closely monitoring the impact of human activity and assessing new fines and fees for excess. Take a new bill to regulate “idle cars,” an issue that NY Councilwoman Helen Rosenthal says “is a real environmental problem and a real public health problem” that contributes to pollution death, but is little enforced.

Rosenthal’s bill would increase fines for idling to up to $1500 for a first offense and $2000 for a second offense, while offering a cut of the money to resident snitches who record video of the offending vehicles and turn in their idling neighbors.

Britain has one of lowest petrol prices in Europe BEFORE tax but among the highest after VAT and duty is added

Ministers including Mr Osborne and his Lib Dem deputy Danny Alexander have repeatedly said the price on forecourts must fall to reflect the cheaper wholesale costs for fuel firms.

But official data released by the government shows that the pre-tax costs of petrol has fallen to just 32.4p per litre, the second lowest in all of the EU.
But tax adds another 76p per litre, making it the fifth highest behind the Netherlands, Italy, Malta and Greece.

It means tax makes up 70 per cent of the total price of a litre of fuel, the joint highest with the Netherlands.

The Punishment for Ignoring Obamacare Penalty Might Surprise You

Now that April 15th is on the horizon, many taxpayers are bracing themselves for the inevitable penalty that will hit them if they don’t sign up for Obamacare. It’s estimated that at least 3 million households may have to pony up 1% of their income, or $95 per adult, if they don’t have insurance; a number which is poised to expand to 2.5% for the 2016 tax year.

However, for all its bluster and intimidating language, the Affordable Care Act might not have any teeth. Recently, a tax expert writing for Forbes noticed that Obamacare, while far-reaching and burdensome in terms of what it demands from the American people, offers little to no repercussion for anyone who would be tempted to avoid it.
