Sens. Cotton, Rubio Fail in Push for Anti-Iran Amendments

Starting Thursday, Sens. Tom Cotton (R – AK) and Marco Rubio (R – FL) stalled the compromise Iran nuclear talks bill, trying to force votes on a series of amendments to the bill that would impose a series of new demands on Iran, none of which were nuclear-related.

Some of the amendments, including a demand that Iran publicly endorse Israel as a “Jewish state,” were opposed even by many hawks, who saw the language as so divisive it might imperil the bill outright.

The Senate’s Republican leadership has announced they are going to “wrap up” consideration of amendments to the bill on Monday, spurning further pushes by Cotton and Rubio, and will try to have a vote on the bill itself this week. The bill aims to give the US Congress the power to veto a deal between the P5+1 and Iran.

Good!

There are many logical, and deep, disagreements I have with this Administration, but the potential for the P5+1 agreement with Iran is not one of them.

The wild card in all of this, of course, is Israel, which may simply decide to cork off militarily against Iran, while the ink is barely dry on the agreement.

And Secretary of State Kerry is naive in the extreme when he makes the following remarks, as noted in antiwar.com, yesterday:

Speaking today on Israel’s Channel 10, Secretary of State John Kerry urged Israel to tone down its hysteria over the possible P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran, saying the US can guarantee to Israel that Iran will never acquire a nuclear weapon. At the same time, Kerry said he didn’t believe there was a serious risk of a “surprise” Israeli attack on Iran, saying he couldn’t imagine Israel would attack Iran without consulting the US government first.

Mr. Secretary, were I you, I would not bet against that possibility at all.

As Israel Lobby Pushes Full-Access Inspections, US Makes False Claims on Iran Nuclear Deal

Senior US officials have been claiming that Iranian negotiators had agreed in Lausanne to accept a demand that Iran allow the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to inspect any site it considered suspicious anywhere in the country, including military bases. Such a provision would have given Israel license to make an endless series of bogus intelligence claims such as the ones that had been labeled "possible military dimensions" aimed at preventing the lifting of sanctions against Iran.

Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei repudiated the claims that Iran had agreed in Lausanne to such inspections on demand. He declared in a speech on April 9 that the IAEA would not be allowed to inspect the country's military sites "under the excuse of nuclear supervision." Khamenei's speech came the day after the Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan had made it clear that no international inspections of Iranian military sites would be allowed under the nuclear agreement.

Iran Bill in Peril as Hawks Push Deal-Killing Amendments

The bill to give the US Congress “veto power” over the P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran was already a recipe for killing the negotiations. A flurry of amendments aimed at making the bill even more hostile toward diplomacy, however, is setting off a fight and threatens to derail the entire bill.

Senate hawks Tom Cotton (R – AK) and Marco Rubio (R – FL) are driving a series of efforts to force immediate votes on some of those most contentious amendments, including Rubio’s demand that Iran endorse Israel as a Jewish state, and Cotton’s demand that Iran agree to give inspectors unrestricted access to the entire country, and not just its nuclear program, as conditions for the deal.

There have been many criticisms I have had about President Obama's policies , as well as those of his predecessor; having said that, the potential for a lasting P5+1 agreement on Iran is an area of agreement between us. It MAY well be the only area on which we agree during his 2nd term of office (BUT - I digress).

But I sincerely wish Tom Cotton and Marco Rubio would retire from their Senate legislative careers, and more to Israel to run for the Knesset.

The fabrication and construction of this bill was, if any legislation ever was, made in Israel, plain and simple.

The Israeli government doesn't want the US and the UN to enter into a peace treaty with Iran regarding its nuclear energy program: the Israeli government wants war, but not a war THEY are willing to have their kids fight. They would highly prefer it to be our kids, American kids, doing the fighting, getting maimed for life, and dying. That is what the Israeli government wants to have happen.

And with this legislation, Senators Cotton and Rubio are putting the needs and concerns of a foreign power over and above the needs and concerns of the Americans they ALLEGEDLY represent.

And to those in Cotton's and Rubio's Senatorial districts; next time, how about finding candidates who will put YOUR needs first, second, and third, and NOT THOSE OF A FOREIGN POWER? With AIPAC money supporting those candidates pledging unwavering fealty to Israel, no matter what the cost to THIS country, I know that will be hard; but it is high time that when American and Israeli geopolitical objectives do NOT converge, that the US government has the right, and the responsibility to "just say no", and go its own way.

U.S. Navy escorting American ships in Strait of Hormuz amid Iran tension

A Senior Defense Department official confirms to CBS News that U.S. Naval forces have begun accompanying American-flagged maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

The move is in response to what Washington views as provocative Iranian behavior in the Persian Gulf. Earlier this week Iranian naval vessels reportedly fired warning shots near Maersk Tigris, a Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship, and detained it and its crew. Iranian officials say the Maersk shipping line owes it money.

Jets of a Saudi Arabian-led coalition bombed Sanaa airport on Tuesday to prevent an Iranian plane from landing in the war-torn country, Yemeni officials and Iranian state media reported.

A runway, a civilian aircraft and part of a terminal building at Sanaa international airport were destroyed after being struck by missiles.

The attack forced two Iranian planes that had flown into Yemen over neighboring Oman to turn back, according to a Yemeni official.

"The planes were carrying medical aid and entered Yemeni airspace this morning," the official told Middle East Eye via Skype.

The Iranian authorities have released a Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship seized earlier on Tuesday, no crew members were detained, according to Al Arabiya television.

Iran seizes commercial ship, U.S. forces respond

The ship, a Marshall Islands flagged vessel, was transiting the Strait into the Persian Gulf on an internationally recognized maritime route when the the Iranian military contacted the vessel and directed the ship master to "divert further into Iranian Waters," according to Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren.

This is the same tracking map, but with the shipping channels and Iranian territorial waters overlaid. From this it is obvious that the M/V Maersk Tigris was following the normal shipping route, but then did indeed alter course to starboard and into Iranian territorial waters. The only question is why? The tracking system indicates accurate GPS data was being received by the ship, so spoofing is out. There are no geographic features justifying a turn to starboard. Was the Captain of the M/V Maersk Tigris "persuaded" by the US Government to trigger a confrontation?

The Iranian Navy has reportedly seized a US ship with 34 crew members on board, for violating Iran's waters in the Persian Gulf. The Pentagon denies the vessel belongs to the US, claiming it is registered in the Marshall Islands.

A Pentagon spokesman has confirmed that Iranian forces boarded the Marshall Island-flagged Maersk Tigris vessel after patrol boats fired warning shots across its bow and ordered it deeper into Iranian waters, Reuters reports.

The vessel initially ignored the warning but complied after the shots were fired, U.S. Army Colonel Steve Warren said.

US Navy deploys warships to intercept Iranian aid convoy off Yemen coast

The Pentagon ordered a fleet of war ships to the coast of Yemen Monday, including the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, the guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy and several destroyers carrying special boarding teams,

Israeli Air Force Chief Confident He Can ‘Get Job Done’ Attacking Iran

Last week’s announcement by the Russian government that they are cancelling a ban on selling S-300 defensive missiles to Iran seems to be sparking a flurry of comments from US and Israeli officials insisting they can attack Iran whenever they want, with or without the S-300.

Yesterday it was President Obama, but today was Israeli Air Force commander Major General Amir Eshel’s turn, insisting he is confident he can “get the job done” if ordered to attack Iran.

Eshel confirmed the S-300 is a “very sophisticated system,” but said he had no doubts that Israel, which had invested “immense resources” in preparing to attack Iran, could get around it in a strike.

Webmaster's Commentary: 

It is extremely regrettable that Israel has invested "...immense resources into preparing to attack Iran...", rather than investing those resources in figuring out how to live with an Iran using nuclear energy for power.

I would like to politely suggest to Major General Eshel that an attack against Iran would be the most ham-fistedly, pig-headedly wrong move the Israeli government and military could make right now, just as the technical framework for a nuclear deal has been established, and the P5+1 is working to agree on the technical ramifications of how this agreement is going to work.

I would like to suggest that the US government may well decide NOT to participate against such a strike, as Obama has committed himself to the potential success of such a deal, but Russia may very well, ultimately, join the fray on the side of Iran.

Hezbollah could attack Israel from the North, and the potential for Israeli casualties is far greater than the MOD will ever state.

Oh, and one last thing, Major General Eshel; by bombing Iran, you will also be bombing one of the oldest, continually practicing Jewish communities in the world, which have chosen to stay in their homeland, Iran, rather than immigrate to Israel.

How you, and the other war-hawks in Israel consider your Jewish brothers and sisters here as merely "collateral damage" in such a potential strike, just confounds me to the depth of my soul.

URGENT: Saudi Arabia Bars Iran's Cargo Plane from Entering Yemen's Airspace

The Iranian civilian plane carried humanitarian aids, including medical equipment, for the Yemeni people who have been under the Saudi-led airstrikes for almost a month now.

The plane was bound for Sana'a Airport, but was intercepted by the Saudi fighter jets before entering Yemen's airspace.

Mohammadi Araqi described the Yemeni people's conditions as critical, and said, "We are in contact with Yemen's Red Crescent Society and Health Ministry and have included their needs in the new consignment."

A fleet of Iranian warships arrived near the southern coast of Yemen on Wednesday in a move likely to add greater tension in a developing U.S.-Iranian standoff in the region, according Iranian military leaders.

Just days after the United States announced it would send its own warships to Yemen in order to prevent Iran from smuggling weapons to terror forces fighting there, a flotilla of Iranian destroyers docked in the same area.

If the U.S. ships intercept the Iranian convoy, they may find it is carrying humanitarian supplies to Yemen to relieve a populace facing massive shortages, Schenker said. Iran for years has provided humanitarian and military assistance to Shiite militias in Iraq and Lebanon, and in the past it has provided similar assistance to Sunni militias fighting Israel in the Gaza Strip.

I did a Google search for the Iranian "warships" on their way to Yemen and all Google showed were photos of the US warships heading for a confrontation. From this I conclude that the Iranian ships are not warships but cargo ships full of humanitarian aid, but Google doesn't think you need to know that.

It is only an assumption that the Iranian ships contain weapons. Iran urges India, China & Russia to counter NATO missile system

Iran has announced its readiness to cooperate with Russia, China and India on the issue of NATO’s missile shield and related threats from the military bloc, the head of its defense ministry said in Moscow.

“I’d like to support the idea of developing multifaceted defense cooperation between China, Iran, India and Russia to counter NATO eastwards expansion and installing a missile shield in Europe,” Hossein Dehghan said on Thursday, at an international security conference in Moscow.

Tehran suggests new international defensive alliance to counter NATO

The Gazeta.ru online newspaper reports that Iran has proposed forming a defensive alliance with Russia. The initiative was announced during the International Security Conference in Moscow, which was attended by representatives from 70 countries.

Since Hillary Clinton announced without any surprise that she was running for president, it is worth taking a look at her record. Op-Ed: Attack Now – Russian Interference Leaves Israel No Choice

The Obama Doctrine – scorn your friends, reward your enemies – has finally reaped the whirlwind, namely Russia and its pledge to provide Iran with an array of the most advanced “defensive” missiles on earth. This leaves Israel with no choice except to act BEFORE those missiles are deployed.

Israel must attack to remove those nukes before it’s too late.

If it was difficult to successfully strike Iran’s nuclear facilities today, tomorrow will be near impossible.

I was worried that Russia's sending defensive missiles to Iran might provoke this reaction.

I would like to remind everyone of three important facts before a lot of people die in yet another war.

1. Israel was at the forefront of screaming that Iraq had nuclear weapons, and bombed Iraq's nuclear power station at Osirak under the claim that it concealed a clandestine bomb factory similar to the one Israel maintains under Dimona. Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq (again supported by Israeli claims of nuclear weapons) experts examined the ruins of Osirak and found no evidence of a weapons facility, nor has any evidence to support Israel and the US' claim that Iraq had nuclear weapons ever been found. Israel has a very poor record of accuracy in knowing who does or does not have nuclear weapons, other than their own.

2. Iran has not launched a war of aggression against another country in over 200 years, standing in sharp contrast with Israel, which these days cannot seem to go six months without attacking one of their neighbors.

3. Iran has signed and ratified the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, So has the United States. Everything Iran is doing with nuclear power is allowed to them under that treaty. Recently declassified US documents support the conclusions from earlier documents released by South Africa, and Mordechai Vanunu's photos of the Dimona weapons factory. Israel does have nuclear weapons, has had them since the 1970s, including hydrogen bombs. Israel refuses to sign the NNPT or allow IAEA inspections. IN short, Iran is playing by the rules. Israel is not.

Iran is not going to attack Israel. The result would be Iran melted down into a giant glowing slab of green glass. What the Russian missiles do is make it impossible for Israel to bully Iran, or attack it to remove an economic rival, as Netanyahu himself admitted to only last week.

US, Israel OK'd Saudi war on Yemen: Iran defense min.

Iran’s defense minister says the Saudi aggression against Yemen has been authorized by the United States and the Israeli regime, calling for an immediate end to the deadly assaults.

Addressing the Fourth Moscow International Security Conference on Thursday, Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said the Saudi government unleashed deadly air raids against Yemen once it received the green light from the United States and Israel, and was promised military cooperation by some regional states.

He added that not only will the Saudi regime fail to achieve its “illegitimate” purposes in Yemen, but will also suffer a heavy defeat and precipitate its downfall, said Dehqan, adding a fate similar to that of former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, awaits Riyadh’s ruler.

S-300 missile system serves defense purposes for Iran: Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has defended Moscow’s recent decision to deliver S-300 air defense system to Iran, saying the system is meant for deterrence amid the developments in war-torn Yemen.

He made the remarks during his annual televised question-and-answer session with the nation at Gostiny Dvor (Merchant Yard) exhibition hall in the Russian capital city of Moscow on Thursday.

“This is a defensive weapons system. More than that, considering the situation that is building up in the region, especially regarding the incidents in Yemen, we think that the delivery of this kind of weapon is a preventive factor,” Putin said.

The comments come as Yemen has been the scene of deadly aerial assaults by Saudi Arabia since March 26. The attacks have so far killed some 2,600 people, according to Yemeni sources.

‘No end to sanctions, no agreement’: Iran sticks to nuclear deal demands

There’ll be no deal on Tehran’s nuclear program without the simultaneous lifting of all sanctions against Iran, President Hassan Rouhani stressed, echoing an earlier statement by Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

A Reckless Act in the Senate on Iran

Congress has formally muscled its way into President Obama’s negotiations with Iran, creating new and potentially dangerous uncertainties for an agreement that offers the best chance of restraining that country’s nuclear program.

With a unanimous vote on Tuesday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a bill that would require Congress to review, and then vote on, the final text of a nuclear deal. It would also prohibit Mr. Obama from waiving economic sanctions on Iran — the crucial element of any agreement under which Iran rolls back its nuclear program — for at least 30 days, and up to 52 days, after signing an agreement so Congress has time to weigh in.

The full Senate and the House will have to approve the bill. But the committee’s action gives momentum to those who have bitterly criticized Mr. Obama for negotiating with Iran, though they offer no credible alternative to the preliminary deal on the table.

Israel said it is pleased with a compromise bill being floated on the Hill, which would give US legislators oversight in the Iran nuclear deal. The White House agreed to the bill adopted by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
