Egyptian court sentences Mubarak, sons to three years in jail

A previous court decision to drop charges against him of conspiring to kill protesters in the uprising, centered in Cairo's Tahrir Square, and the release of some of his associates from jail have cast doubt over Egypt's political transformation.

Last May, Mubarak was sentenced to three years in prison on charges of diverting public funds earmarked to renovate presidential palaces and using the money to upgrade family properties. His two sons were given four-year jail terms in the same case.

In January, Egypt's high court overturned the convictions, and the case went back to court for retrial.

"The ruling of the court is three years in prison without parole for Mohamed Hosni Mubarak and Gamal Mohamed Hosni Mubarak and Alaa Mohamed Hosni Mubarak," Judge Hassan Hassanein announced on Saturday.

ZAHI HAWASS STORMS OUT OF DEBATE WITH GRAHAM HANCOCK BEFORE IT BEGINS

Hawass demanded that Hancock censor his talk to remove all references to Robert Bauval and the Orion correlation theory. Tainted Russian wheat resurfaces in Egypt

Court sentences ousted Egypt president to 20 years in prison

An Egyptian criminal court on Tuesday sentenced ousted Islamist President Mohammad Morsi to 20 years in prison over the killing of protesters in 2012, the first verdict to be issued against the country's first freely elected leader.

The Cairo Criminal Court issued the verdict as Morsi and other defendants in the case - mostly Muslim Brotherhood leaders - stood in a soundproof glass cage inside a makeshift courtroom at Egypt's national police academy.

The case stems from violence outside the presidential palace in December 2012. Morsi's supporters attacked opposition protesters, sparking clashes that killed at least 10 people.

Iran has announced its readiness to cooperate with Russia, China and India on the issue of NATO’s missile shield and related threats from the military bloc, the head of its defense ministry said in Moscow.

Egypt: Life sentence for those digging or using smuggling tunnels to Gaza

Cairo - People who dig and use cross-border tunnels in Egypt could face a maximum penalty of life in jail, state news agency MENA said on Sunday, citing amendments to the penal code targeting activity in the frontier area near the Gaza Strip.

Egypt declared a state of emergency in the border area last year after at least 33 security personnel were killed in attacks in the Sinai Peninsula, a remote but strategic region bordering Israel, Gaza and the Suez Canal. There were several militant attacks in the Sinai on Sunday.

A residential area south of Sheikh Zuweid town in North Sinai was hit by mortar fire on Wednesday, killing nine civilians, said the officials.

The Civil War in Yemen is rapidly expanding. We have been forced to close our embassy and military base located there. It is now clear that Obama’s optimism for fighting terrorism in Yemen was misplaced. It hardly sets a standard for dealing with constant conflict and chaos throughout the Middle East.

So far the various factions that we have supported over the years have been poor choices, as usual.

Hopefully someday our government officials will wake up. The counterinsurgency doctrine that was supposed to be the answer to all our military shortcomings is a total failure.

Breaking News - Saudi Arabia starts bombing Yemen - envoy

Saudi Arabian forces, joined by nine other countries, have launched a military operation in Yemen against Shiite Houthi rebels, the Saudi ambassador to the US said. The offensive, which started with airstrikes, will also involve “other military assets.”

According to Ambassador Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, the military operation in Yemen started at 7 p.m. EST (11 p.m. GMT). The US is not participating in the operation, the envoy stressed.

Rafah buffer zone to extend 1,000 more meters into Egypt

People in the restive Sinai Peninsula have been informed of a third phase of evacuations to be made as part of government plans to create a 2,000-meter buffer zone along the border with the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

(1) The Liberty was flying a huge, brand new American flag. The flag was 5-by-8 feet. The weather conditions were ideal to ensure the flag’s easy observance and identification, because it was clear and sunny, with a wind-speed which make for a constant ripple in the flag. Russia and Egypt to establish 'free trade zone' and build nuclear reactor

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has hailed the economic and security relationship between Egypt and Russia, and announced the establishment of a “free trade zone” between Egypt and the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union.

He said it was important to “fight terrorism intellectually” and said there was a need to address the “social issues” that led to it.

Sisi also announced a strengthening of trade relations between the two countries, culminating in a preliminary agreement to create a Russian industrial zone in Egypt, near the Suez Canal. The pair also said that they would set up a nuclear power plant designed to “help Egypt reach its energy needs”.

Protesters in Egypt hold fresh rallies

As the anniversary of the January 2011 revolution draws closer, the anti coup alliance led by the Muslim brotherhood has called for fresh week long protests dubbed "together to liberate and purge".

Following the Friday prayers, thousands of protesters held rallies in Cairo and several other cities, calling for the ouster of President Abdul Fatah el Sisi and demanding an immediate end to military rule.

Security forces attacked protesters in Hadaeq Helwan district south of the capital Cairo. A protester was killed in the scuffles.
Protesters also chanted anti Sisi slogans and called on all Egyptians to put their differences aside, and to stand against those who protesters called the "coup orchestrators".

One killed in Gaza by Egypt border guards: Sources

At least one Palestinian has been killed in the frontier town of Rafah in the besieged Gaza Strip by Egyptian soldiers firing from across the border, sources say.

"A Palestinian citizen, aged 23, was killed by Egyptian army fire on the Egyptian-Palestinian border and the security agencies are investigating the incident to find out the motives," Gaza's Interior Ministry spokesman Iyad al-Bazm said in a message on his Facebook page on Friday.

The Egyptian forces shot the unnamed man "in the back and the bullet settled in the heart. He died on the spot," Gaza’s emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said.

On Tuesday, Egyptian authorities said they would double the width of a security buffer zone currently under construction along the Gaza border, claiming that the move will prevent Gazans from entering Egypt.

Al-Jazeera has demanded the release of its reporters, and is calling the accusations against them absurd.

Egypt said Tuesday work will begin next week to double the width of a buffer zone being built along the border with the Gaza Strip to prevent militants infiltrating from the Palestinian enclave.

Egypt alliance holds rallies against military rule

Members of Egypt's Anti-Coup Alliance have held nationwide rallies calling for an immediate end to military rule and the release of all political detainees in the North African country, Press TV reports.

Egyptian demonstrators who took to the streets on Friday were faced by security forces, but no heavy clashes were reported.

The alliance, led by the Muslim Brotherhood, also called for a round of national protests against the government of President Abdel Fatah el Sisi, who led a military coup last year against Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically-elected president.

“The government is fragile and it will soon collapse because after the revolution which hasn’t achieved its goals yet, the people will not accept injustice anymore and they will for sure revolt against any tyrant,” said Fawzy Soliman of the Egyptian opposition group, the April 6 Youth Movement.

In 1967, at the height of the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War, the Israeli Air Force launched an unprovoked attack on the USS Liberty, a US Navy spy ship that was monitoring the conflict from the safety of international waters in the Mediterranean.

Israeli jet fighters hit the vessel with rockets, cannon fire and napalm, before three Israeli torpedo boats moved in to launch a second more devastating attack. Though she did not sink, the Liberty was badly damaged. Thirty-four US servicemen and civilian analysts were killed, another 171 were wounded.

Later Israel apologised for what it claimed to be a tragic case of mistaken identity. It said that it had believed the ship to be hostile Egyptian naval vessel. US President Lyndon Johnson was privately furious but publicly the White House chose not to challenge the word of its closest Middle East ally and accepted that the attack had been a catastrophic accident.

An Egyptian Intervention in Libya

Two Egyptian officials claimed the country’s warplanes had begun bombing positions in Benghazi, the second-largest city in neighboring Libya, on Wednesday, in an attempt to wrest control of the city from the Ansar-al-Sharia Islamist militia. The mission, which will be led by Libyan pilots, marks the highest-profile collaboration between the two North African countries, both of which are beset by instability, since they experienced simultaneous Arab Spring revolutions in 2011. The Egyptian government has officially denied the news.

According to the Associated Press, the mission is slated to last three to six months and will “eventually involve Libyan ground troops recently trained by Egyptian forces.”

Almost completely missing from this feel-good morality play was the terribly unpleasant fact that Mubarak was one of the U.S. Government’s longest and closest allies and that his ”three decades of iron rule” — featuring murder, torture and indefinite detention for dissidents — were enabled in multiple ways by American support.

The long-held suspicion among Egyptians that President Hosni Mubarak is grooming his son Gamal to replace him one day is crystallizing into a widespread belief. There are now signs that “one day” may be as close as next year.

As President Mubarak hosts the next round of peace talks in Sharm El Sheikh today, some say he’s sending a message to both the Americans and the Israelis that Gamal is the safest choice to preserve Egypt’s peace with Israel, which is deeply unpopular among the Egyptian public, and its role in shepherding the negotiations.
