Spying powers' fast-track upgrade hits wall of criticism

Proposed powers for spies to set up video surveillance in New Zealanders' homes without a warrant have come under fire on the first day of hearings for urgent counter-terrorism law changes.

The Law Society, the Privacy Commissioner and the Human Rights Commission all expressed deep reservations to a select committee about some of the counter-terrorism measures, which they said went well beyond any current powers.

Law Society spokesman Sir Geoffrey Palmer said the bill contained some safeguards which protected against abuse of the new powers.

"But nevertheless, it is the view of the society that some of the provisions in the bill substantially interfere with and reduce human rights and individual liberty."

Home Office is creating more powers to turn everyone into suspects – but leave us no safer

The ISC’s approach leads us further down a slippery slope towards blanket surveillance of the entire population. Sensible, properly targeted investigations of terrorist suspects are one thing – indiscriminate spying on every one of us is another.

US pressing Chinese and Arab banks to sanction Russia – head of VTB bank

The US is putting pressure on Chinese and Arab banks, forbidding them to work with Russian sanctioned companies, says Andrey Kostin, head of Russia's second biggest lender VTB.

"We have information on Arab countries, China, and others that US officials come, gather the heads of banks and say: "We will punish everyone who is under Russian sanctions," said Kostin, after a meeting organized by the Stuttgart Chamber of Commerce in Germany.

"We need to take this into account. Nobody wants to become BNP Paribas”, he said, meaning the large French bank that was fined $9 billion for violating US sanctions against Cuba, Iran and Sudan.

However, Kostin believes Chinese credit organizations will provide financing for projects that interest them.

Police release footage of boy with replica gun shot by cop

Cleveland police have released video footage showing the moment 12-year-old Tamir Rice was shot dead by a rookie officer who mistook his BB gun for a real weapon.

The boy was shot by Timothy Loehmann, 26, on Saturday after a 911 caller said reported seeing a man waving around a gun - but did not know whether it was real or not. Newly-released audio showed that the 911 dispatcher did not pass on this concern to the responding officers.

At a press conference on Wednesday, authorities released the 911 call made by a man, police dispatch calls and a grainy video showing the moment the officers arrived and shot the boy.

Cops Beat Man & 7-Month Pregnant Wife then Deleted the Video, But it Survived on the Cloud

The Denver police department has been accused of using excessive force after a video, which they allegedly deleted, survived on the cloud and was turned into FOX 31.

The incident started as two officers approached David Nelson Flores, who was in his vehicle with his seven-and-a-half-months pregnant wife and their child, to shake him down after suspecting him of being in possession of a substance deemed illegal by the state.

Upon their approach, officers said they saw Flores put a white sweat sock in his mouth. Because the US is involved in an immoral war on drugs, this ‘sock in mouth’ move apparently gave the officers the right to yank Flores out of his car and proceed to pummel the man on the asphalt.

What The People Who Are Telling You What 'The Media Isn't Telling You' Aren't Telling You About Ferguson

Reposted and updated, lest any try to confound the issue further by saying that this is a somehow ill-chosen battle -- and implying (or stating outright) that common sense, armed with the facts, would find that Wilson's use of undue and lethal force ending the life of Brown without cause, was in some way arguable or justified

POLICE LIED:
BROWN WAS KILLED
***148 FEET***
FROM WILSON'S SUV
(NOT 35)

When the police came out the morning after Mike Brown was killed and deliberately included the distance between the SUV and the shooting, it successfully created a very particular narrative. The arc of their initial story, magnified in importance by the absence of even one official report, is that Darren Wilson shot and killed a young man who, in a short distance from the SUV, posed him grave harm. How far Mike Brown actually fled, how far Darren Wilson chased him, and where each of them were in relation to each other and to the SUV, are facts of paramount importance. If Mike Brown fled over 148 feet away from Darren Wilson, it clearly suggests that Brown—unarmed, shot, missing a shoe, in lounge clothes—feared for his life and not the other way around.

Excellent analysis of photo evidence, and video (h/t Daily Kos), as well as police, autopsy, and ballistic reports. Let's not get confused here.

What the Media Isn’t Telling You About Ferguson

Whereas the hundreds of cases of egregious police brutality directed against people of all colors every year are routinely ignored or forgotten by the mainstream media and political leaders, the race baiters only ever direct African-Americans to get excited about ambiguous or outright justifiable cases like Trayvon Martin or Michael Brown.

This misdirection succeeds in fooling activists into rallying behind lost causes, while convincing the majority of Americans that people who complain about police brutality are ignorant, stupid, bias and even violent.

This is the one true narrative that the mainstream media won’t tell you about in advance of expected further unrest in Ferguson and other major American cities in the days and weeks to follow.

This is the shocking moment police fired tear gas at a crowd of protesters who were carrying an apparently unconscious woman to safety during violent clashes in Ferguson on Monday night.

The group was captured on video dragging the collapsed woman toward heavily-armored officers in the St Louis suburb, while screaming: 'She's having a heart attack, she's having a heart attack!'

When they reached the line of police shields, they continued to beg, 'She needs help, she needs help just get her', to which one officer replied: 'Let her go, back up, we will get her.'

But seconds later, police suddenly threw a tear gas canister into the crowd - causing protesters to cover their faces and flee - before firing rubber bullets and reportedly deploying stun grenades.

Senate Report: Scale of Wall Street Holdings Are “Unprecedented in U.S. History”

Last Thursday, the U.S. Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, chaired by Senator Carl Levin, released an alarming 396-page report that details how Wall Street’s too-big-to-fail banks have quietly, and often stealthily through shell companies, gained ownership of a stunning amount of the nation’s critical industrial commodities like oil, aluminum, copper, natural gas, and even uranium. The report said the scale of these bank holdings “appears to be unprecedented in U.S. history.”

Albuquerque Cop Who Killed Homeless Man Will Retire With Full Benefits

Last March, the killing of James Boyd by the Albuquerque Police Department shocked the nation. The public got to see with their very own eyes, how callous and vicious some police officers can be. Boyd, who was widely known as a schizophrenic, had been camping out in the foothills of Albuquerque, New Mexico (doing nothing and bothering nobody) when he was approached by several heavily armed members of the local police department.

What ensued was one of the most despicable displays of police violence in recent history, but has since been overshadowed by the controversial shooting of Michael Brown. After a long standoff with police, during which Boyd was armed with a small camping knife, video showed the police gunning down the homeless man. The footage of the event appeared to show Boyd surrendering before the police shot him in the back.

Deutsche Bank's Modest Proposal To Central Banks: "Purchase The Gold Held By Private Households"

In other words, all the world's central banks would need to do to "liberate dormant liquidity" , held, as DB suggests, by private households in various "unwanted" troves of physical gold, and in the process also build up their gold holdings, would be to make said gold unattractive to hold.

And if that fails, well, FDR already showed the world how to deal with an intransingent public which does not want to part with its gold in Executive Order 6102, something which the Dutch Central Bank which also made the news recently when it secretly repatriated 122 tons of gold from the NY Fed, already did years ago when it advised pension funds to sell their gold: confiscation.

Webmaster's Commentary:

"Make gold unattractive" means artificially driving the price down. And the reference to FDR is more than passing as FDR's gold confiscation was a forced sale of private gold to the government ... at $20 an ounce!

via Daily Kos. Excellent presentation of facts! Sources and backup sources hyperlinked.

"See his video below and pay attention to the statements at 1:13 & 6:01"

"At that time, when the chief said the "entire scene" was just 35 feet in distance from the "car door to the shooting," every observer accepted it as a negligible fact and thought little about it, instead zeroing in on why Darren Wilson stopped Mike Brown in the first place and why a police officer would shoot a young man who was surrendering with his hands up."

"It turns, out, though, that the distance Mike Brown fled was not 35 feet, as was stated in the press conference and cited in hundreds of articles since. Nor was it 45 feet, or 75 feet, or even 95 feet, but approximately 148 feet away from Darren Wilson’s SUV. Below, you will find photos from the day of the murder, maps, infographics, and more to confirm for you that the distance was more 500 percent farther away than originally claimed by Chief Belmar and subsequently quoted as fact in almost every narrative of the case."

U.S. Postal Service ‘mail imaging’ program used for law enforcement, surveillance

The U.S. Postal Service runs a massive dragnet surveillance program of all the mail in the United States; enabling law enforcement to generate profiles of associations and contacts of every American. Two key programs play a role in the surveillance. The first is called “Mail Imaging.” As the name suggests, the program involves taking a digital photograph of every piece of physical mail that crosses through the USPS. The images provide a permanent record of the source and destination addresses posted on all packages and letters in the country. The scope of the program is absolutely huge. The New York Times reported that about 160 billion pieces of mail were scanned in 2012.

Politicians exploited the surge in patriotism following the attack to reintroduce the bill and call it the PATRIOT Act. To oppose it at that time was, by design, to seem unpatriotic.

Pat Buchanan on the Rogue President

snip: That this action will be as much a part of Obama’s legacy as Obamacare is certain. The unanswered question is how the Obama amnesty will be remembered by history. His aides think that it will be seen as a second Emancipation Proclamation. Perhaps.

But with this amnesty Obama takes custody of and responsibility for the entire illegal population. He is the patron saint of illegal aliens. And for what they do, he will be held accountable, as was Jimmy Carter for the Marielitos Castro sent and Carter welcomed.

If the amnestied illegals contribute to the drug trade and violent crime, that will be Obama’s legacy to his country. If they turn up disproportionately on the welfare rolls, exploding state and federal deficits, that will be Obama’s legacy.

If this amnesty is followed by a new invasion across the border America cannot control, that, too, will be Obama’s gift to his countrymen.

White House Apparently Doing Everything To Stop Release Of CIA Torture Report

On Tuesday evening, Senator Dianne Feinstein had told reporters that the Senate Intelligence Committee and the White House were finally close to an agreement to finalize the release of the declassified executive summary of the CIA torture report. As we've been discussing for months, back in April the Senate Intelligence Committee agreed to declassify the 480-page executive summary of the 6,300-page report (which cost $40 million to put together). As we'd noted, the CIA and White House first offered up redactions that made the whole thing "incomprehensible" according to some in the Senate.

Is Texas Getting Ready to Kill An Innocent Man?

Despite his attempt to cover up his crime, Fennell was eventually arrested and ultimately pleaded guilty to kidnapping and improper sexual contact with a person in custody. He received a ten-year sentence and is currently slated for release in September 2018. Lear also filed a civil suit against Fennell and the City of Georgetown, which was settled for $100,000. But for her, the story doesn’t end there. Fennell’s arrest prompted several other women to come forward alleging similar threats and assaults, including one additional rape. These episodes had either never been reported or else were swept under the rug by local law enforcement. Together these incidents revealed a portrait of Fennell as a dangerous man who abused his police credentials with impunity.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is a long and convoluted story, but worth the read-through to see how an innocent man has been convicted for a crime that may have been committed by a dirty cop who was protected by other officers.

Sparks fly in faked-drug-dog-certification case in Maryland federal court

Federal prosecutors have called a private attorney's attempts to convince Maryland U.S. District judge James Bredar to dismiss a federal civil-forfeiture case against $122,640 in alleged drug cash a "sanctimonious," "spurious," "scurrilous," "scorched Earth tactic" that is a "manufactured horror." But the attorney, C. Justin Brown, who has presented to Bredar a compelling factual argument that prosecutors knowingly and intentionally produced a faked drug-dog certification—a document that the government itself described as "bogus" in internal communications—as a central piece of evidence in the case, isn't backing down.

Fed Judge rules that CA 10-day waiting period laws violate the Second Amendment, Rejects State's Stall Tactics

A federal judge in Central California has rejected the CA Attorney General's request to stay a judgment preventing the state from enforcing the 10-day waiting period. It's no small irony that this ruling came from a Bill Clinton appointee. Senior U.S. District Judge Anthony W. Ishii did state that "The Court agrees that Second Amendment law is evolving" but that "the Court is satisfied that this case raises "serious legal questions." Ishii continued "It has been held that a deprivation of constitutional rights, "for even minimal periods of time, unquestionably constitutes irreparable injury. It has been recognized that enforcement of an unconstitutional law is contrary to the public interest. Combined with the public interest that weighs against granting an injunction, the Court does not find that issuing a stay is appropriate. Defendant's motion for a stay will be denied."

American Ranking Plummets in Global Index of 'Personal Freedoms'

In an age of expanding national security powers, increasing surveillance state, and rolled-back civil liberties protections, Americans' perception of their own personal freedoms is plummeting, according to the annual ranking by the Legatum Institute in London.

In Washington D.C. this week to promote their findings, researchers with the Legatum Institute measure a nation's prosperity on a number of factors including health, safety, education, economy, opportunity, social capital, governance and personal freedoms.

According to the 2014 Index (pdf) released earlier this month, in the measure of personal freedom, the United States has fallen from 9th place in 2010 to 21st worldwide—behind such countries as Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Uruguay and Costa Rica.

How Police Use Military Tactics to Quash Dissent

As we wait for the grand jury verdict on whether to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson for the killing of Michael Brown, schools in Ferguson are preparing to close, the police are stocked up on riot weapons and white supremacists are pledging to kill. A sand-colored, mine-resistant military vehicle was seen parked in front a local Dairy Queen. Protesters are organized and eschewing violence for clever forms of civil disobedience, but know they will likely face violence: Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has already declared a state of emergency in Ferguson.

Armored trucks in the street and a fear of mayhem are more common abroad, but Ferguson shows they now have a place in the suburbs of America. Police have militarized from to boots to brainstem.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It appears that at both the Federal and State level, the government wants violence in Ferguson, to viciously stomp down with extreme prejudice, and show the world the the US striving to become "number one" when it comes to police brutality, particularly against minorities.

It is very sad to me that the crisis brought on by the killing of Michael Brown cannot become an opportunity for the police to change their institutional culture and reach out to the citizens of this community, which would be the best possible outcome.

Unfortunately, no matter the Grand Jury's decision, I would almost be willing to bet that there will be violence, not only in this town, but in other densely-packed urban areas where joblessness and poverty are rife.

And why?!? Because the good jobs which used to be the bedrock of the middle class in this country have been outsourced/offshored to the cheapest labor pools possible on this planet.

And it hasn't mattered much who is in office, as this development has unfolded over the last 30 years, because those same executives which are doing this are contributing generously to their candidates of choice, who have now become representative of corporations, not at all of We the People.

I sincerely believe that most people, given the opportunity, will work when it is possible; it is just that there are no jobs for them to go to, due to offshoring/outsourcing.

I can never condone violence, as an answer to any societal problem; but I can understand how it comes about, out of intense frustration that absolutely nothing is working properly in your life.

And being unemployed, and barely surviving on public assistance, have to be frustrating in the extreme.

And the longer one is out of a job, the more prejudicial companies are about hiring that person.
