THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

"[The] American thirst for victory, his scorn for defeat, gives the militarist line great leverage over political debate, although its degree of dominance ebbs and flows with the nature of the issue and the public mood, the latter itself significantly shaped by a media that defers to the state on national security policy in most matters." -- Richard Falk, professor

Massive depot fire in New Jersey

Massive plumes of black smoke rose from a Hillsborough, New Jersey train depot. Firefighters are on the scene.
Around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, users on social media reported the blaze. Multiple fire trucks and dozens of firefighters from the Hillsborough Township Volunteer Fire Company could arrived at the scene. Strong winds pushed the thick black smoke miles eastward far from the scene of the fire.

Russian PM: Foreign offensive in Syria could spark 'world war'

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev warned Thursday that if Arab forces entered the Syrian war, they could spark a "new world war" and urged ceasefire talks instead.

Asked about proposals by some Arab countries to enter the conflict under a US command, Medvedev said, "that would be bad because ground offensives usually lead to wars becoming permanent."

"The Americans and our Arabic partners must think hard about this: do they want a permanent war?" he was quoted as telling the German Handelsblatt business daily.

"Do they really think they would win such a war very quickly? That's impossible, especially in the Arabic world. There everyone is fighting against everyone...everything is far more complicated. It could take years or decades."

Oregon standoff ends with last occupier surrendering

The last four remaining activists occupying a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon hinterlands have surrendered, ending the 41-day standoff with local and federal authorities. One of them held out for two hours, rambling on the internet before surrendering.

David Fry of Ohio, Jeff Banta of Nevada, and Sean and Sandy Anderson of Idaho have insisted they would only surrender if the government did not press charges.

Negotiations over their surrender to the federal agents were being mediated by Nevada state assemblywoman Michelle Fiore and televangelist Franklin Graham. An activist has broadcast the talks via a YouTube live stream.

New study finds that Dodd-Frank has promoted industry consolidation and killed community banks

A new study by Marshall Lux and Robert Greene reports that since the enactment of Dodd-Frank community banks have lost market share at twice the rate that they did prior to Dodd-Frank.

The authors note that many of the regulations implemented pursuant to Dodd-Frank are not linked to the size of the institution, thus there are economies of scale in regulatory compliance. Thus, regulatory costs tend to fall proportionally heavier on smaller banks, which, in turn, tends to promote consolidation of the industry (as I noted several years ago when I predicted that Dodd-Frank would promote industry consolidation).

Kerry Calls For Peace As NATO Proxies Lose Ground In Syria

Hillary Clinton’s week just went from bad to worse

Losing New Hampshire by 22 points to an avowed socialist was bad enough for Hillary Clinton. But then came the news — first reported by WaPo — that the State Department had opened a inquiry regarding the activities of the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation during her time time as secretary of state. And bad went to way, way worse.

Pro-Israel Lobby Shudders as Bernie Sanders Beats Clinton and Threatens Neocons in Washington and Wall Street

Bernie Sanders is a self-declared Democratic Socialist who believes that the US middle class and the working families who produce the wealth of America, deserve a decent standard of living. He believes that international trade agreements as written by corporate America, Wall Street and the political lobbyists, have been a disaster for the American worker. He advocates comprehensive financial reforms that will focus on income and wealth inequality.

Pivot to Nowhere as the World Awaits the Next Big Crisis

Let’s start with the IMF «reform» which will be in full effect in a few weeks. Even this mini «reform» had been repeatedly vetoed by the Empire of Chaos. Washington still holds the largest quota and voting shares in the IMF, ahead of Japan. But now China is in the 3rd place and BRICS members Brazil, Russia and India are in the top ten. This does not spell out radical change though. The US government still refuses to implement a full reform that will end up reducing the IMF's global power. China, meanwhile, advances with facts on the ground such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and the BRICS with their New Development Bank (NDB), a serious attempt at breaking the stranglehold of a fraudulent – and hyper exploitative – monetary and financial system. Bretton Woods may be dead but the world is still encumbered with its corpse. The same applies to the larger Washington Consensus – as much as deadly chickens are increasingly coming home to roost.

German labour minister says the country will need to spend half a billion euros to integrate just ten per cent of its migrant arrivals into the job market

Germany needs 450 million euros to integrate just ten per cent of the migrants and refugees who have arrived in the country in the past year, the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs said.

Andrea Nahles says the money, some £352million, would be used to create jobs for an estimated 100,000 refugees, including the provision of training opportunities and internships.

Germany took in more than one million asylum seekers in 2015, leaving the labour minister with a task 'impossible to manage with the current budget'.

Fukuyama’s Vague Criticism of ‘Putinism’ Distracts from Failures of Liberal Democracy

One of the problems when we compare Russia to the West, is that the West holds Russia to standards which it does not similarly apply to itself. The goal is to shame Russia into compliance with Western norms in every sphere. Former US Ambassador to the Soviet Union, Jack Matlock noted in 2011, that many academic and media commentators also hold Russia to these unrealistic standards and that it comes off looking hypocritical. "When we begin to talk about democracy, we seem to make it clear that what we have in mind is simply serving American interests," he said. In a critique of Fukuyama’s essay twenty-five years on, Guardian columnist Eliane Glaser wrote that his work helped to “conceal and naturalise” the dominance of the neo-con right and to “erase the rationale for debate”. This is fully consistent with the ongoing Western mission to remold the world in its image — a mission for whose proponents Russia is the Holy Grail.

Judge Napolitano Says New Revelations Mean FBI ‘Now Has Leverage’ in Hillary Clinton Email Investigation

“Mrs. Clinton was so reckless in the manner in which she sent out top secret emails, knowingly sending them to people who weren’t authorized to receive them,” Napolitano said on Fox News on Thursday.

State Dept: Top Official Didn’t Know About Hillary’s Server, Even Though He Was On Email Discussing It

A spokesman for the State Department insisted during a press conference on Wednesday that Patrick Kennedy, the Under Secretary of Management at the department, was not aware Hillary Clinton maintained a private server in her home while she was secretary of state.

But that claim — made by spokesman Mark Toner — is a curious one given that emails published by The Daily Caller last month show that Kennedy was involved in an August 2011 email exchange with two of Clinton’s top aides and another State Department official in which Clinton’s private email server was discussed.

FLASHBACK - THE ELEVENTH MARBLE

Economies are like tin cans. Before you can take a marble out, you must have put a marble in. Nobody can give you a marble that does not exist, yet this simple reality is lost to the priests of that fantastic religion called "economics" in that unholiest of temples called the Private Central Bank. Their religious doctrine seems to be that there must always be an eleventh marble inside the tin can, and that the tin can unfairly withholds that eleventh marble, indeed cheats them of their right to the eleventh marble, purely out of spite. That faith in the existence of the eleventh marble, unseen and improvable, is the article of faith the religion of banking rests on. It is far easier to burn the heretics than to question the dogma.

FLASHBACK - VOTE FRAUD AND THE BANKRUPTCY OF THE UNITED STATES

In light of the numerous incidents of vote fraud uncovered through the years and the quite obvious stonewall on the subject by the officials who benefit from rigged elections and the media that at least helps in the rigging, it is dangerous to assume that American elections are honest. The burden of proof must lie with VNS and the voting machine companies to prove their honesty.

In an atmosphere of doubt about the validity of the voting process, it appears that the entire voting process is a sham, a trick to fool the American people into accepting whatever is done to them by creating the illusion that the people somehow voted for and approved of whatever is being done. That's how Batista fooled the Cuban people. That's how the USSR fooled the Soviet citizens. And that's how the American government fools us.

Do We The People owe that $100+ trillion? No, we do not. It was borrowed without our permission. No citizen agreed to repay that money.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Zika HOAX exposed by South American doctors: Brain deformations caused by larvicide chemical linked to Monsanto; GM mosquitoes a 'total failure'

Despite all the public hoopla, all the cases of microcephaly being discovered in Brazil have never been scientifically linked to the Zika virus. A group of doctors from South America are now saying the brain deformations the world is witnessing are caused by the mass fumigation of low-income Brazilian people with a chemical larvicide, not by mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus.

What we're seeing with the brain deformations of children, in other words, is more like the history of thalidomide, a prescription medicine given to pregnant women that caused children to be born with limbs missing. But the official narrative on all this is pushing a false link with Zika in order to justify more chemical fumigation, more vaccines and more genetically engineered mosquitoes.

Is the Zika virus 'epidemic' being used to cover up vaccine-induced miscarriages and birth defects?

Although wonderful for many women, pregnancy comes with a great responsibility. Especially in an age when scientific research is often manipulated for the sake of profit, a mother-to-be is faced with a set of very difficult choices in order to keep herself and her baby healthy. One of these choices involves the controversial vaccinations that are pushed down on pregnant women by public health officials and obstetricians.

Several of these vaccines are known to cause miscarriages and birth defects. Sounds familiar? The recent Zika virus "epidemic" displays a similar profile. So far, it's been claimed that pregnant women who are contaminated with the virus are at a higher risk of miscarriage, while the virus itself has been publicly linked to a birth defect called microcephaly. But is it possible that that Zika is being used to cover up vaccine injury in pregnant women?

Is Terminator back? Russians make major advances in artificial intelligence

A group of Russian scientists are conducting research that could help humanity not only to be rid of incurable brain diseases, but also to move closer to creating full-fledged artificial intelligence. Developers believe that in five to six years they will be able to create thinking machines that so far have been seen only in movies. These machines will be far more effective than existing AI technology, with deep neural networks and hierarchical temporal memory. The new machines will have associative memory, developers say. They will be able to synthesize new knowledge, search for the most relevant answer through association, and apply knowledge received in a different context. Furthermore, they will even be able to solve tasks with the use of abstract thinking on the basis of deduction and induction. In other words, it's quite likely the Terminator will soon be back.

Why has the world waited so long for a Catholic-Orthodox reconciliation?

Last week, the historic first meeting of the leaders of the Christian world’s two biggest church bodies was finally announced: It will take place on Feb. 12 at a surprise location – at Havana’s airport. So why is it that such a meeting was not possible for 20 years and why is it suddenly happening now? In the 1990s, as the constraints of the Soviet atheist state crumbled, the church enjoyed a tremendous growth while at the same time competing against a legion of foreign missionaries. The Roman Catholic Church was not the largest force among them, but had a rich history of centuries-old Orthodox-Catholic competition. The defensive position in which the Russian Orthodox Church found itself fed a strong grassroots anti-ecumenical movement that put pressure on the hierarchy to restrict their ties with non-Orthodox Christians. There were occasional problems as the Vatican re-established its structures in Russia.

Central Banks Are Trojan Horses, Looting Their Host Nations

A Nobel prize winning economist, former chief economist and senior vice president of the World Bank, and chairman of the President’s council of economic advisers (Joseph Stiglitz) says that the International Monetary Fund and World Bank loan money to third world countries as a way to force them to open up their markets and resources for looting by the West.

"One of the most dreadful prisons in history - Guantanamo - continues to function. Libya was destroyed as a result of Obama's aggression. In Syria, Obama's agents train, fund and organize terrorist groups, deceitfully naming them 'moderate opposition,' who, among other things, bear a relation to Al-Qaeda, implicated in crimes against the American people," the petition runs. The American president is also accused of violating Americans' right for privacy. The accusation appears as a consequence of the scandal about tapped telephones and NSA's access to private correspondence.

Hillary’s henchwomen have a dirty secret

The demands for conformity by Clinton’s henchwomen mirror the anti-free-speech movements on college campuses, but are striking because they came from a former secretary of state and a feminist icon, both of whom struggled against demeaning stereotypes in their own careers. They now ape the sexists they fought.

Albright especially struck a sour note when she declared that “there’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other.” Clinton laughed and clapped at the statement.

Steinem separately accused young women of supporting Sen. Bernie Sanders because “the boys are with Bernie.” She also insulted those who favor Donald Trump, saying they only liked him for his money. If he “lost his wallet, there would be no women in sight,” she told Women’s Health magazine.

The bullying smears are backfiring, but before the incidents give way to new outrages borne of Clinton Entitlement Syndrome, some context is useful.

Russian Intervention in Syrian War Has Sharply Reduced U.S. Options

For months now the United States has insisted there can be no military solution to the Syrian civil war, only a political accord between President Bashar al-Assad and the fractured, divided opposition groups that have been trying to topple him.

But after days of intense bombing that could soon put the critical city of Aleppo back into the hands of Mr. Assad’s forces, the Russians may be proving the United States wrong. US casts doubts on Russia's March 1 ceasefire initiative in Syria

Russia has offered ceasefire in Syria from March 1. Yet, US officials have doubts about the Russian initiative. US State Department spokesman Mark Toner said that he did not have any information about the specific date for Russia's proposal of ceasefire in Syria. However, Toner added, the US would rather prefer immediate ceasefire, Reuters reports. Russia's Ambassador to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, said that Russia and the USA were discussing opportunities for a ceasefire in Syria. Officials with the US State Department believe that the Geneva talks on Syria were interrupted because the Russian Air Force supposedly attacked a Syrian humanitarian convoy.

Indonesia to replace US-made F-5 fighters with Russia's Su-35 jets

The government of Indonesia intends to purchase ten Su-35 fighter aircraft from Russia, Indonesian Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said after the talks with the head of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev. "I am going to Russia in March to sign the contract," the minister said, Defenseworld.net reports. According to the Indonesian official, it goes about the acquisition of ten aircraft, even though it was earlier said that Indonesia was planning to purchase 12 jets. Indonesia is sending its pilots and technical staff to Russia soon for training. It is expected that the state-of-the-art Russian-made fighter jets will replace the US-made F-5 aircraft for the Indonesian Air Force. Indonesia also has eleven Su-30 and five Su-27 aircraft. The Sukhoi Su-35 is a deeply modernized super-maneuverable multifunctional 4 ++ generation fighter jet. The aircraft uses fifth-generation technology that makes it superior to other similar class fighters.

Russian official notes Western aid is pictured as Kiev's diplomatic victory

"Military fog is dissipating for most Ukrainians, and they are starting to think why all of this was started and why it still continues," Naryshkin told a session of the working group on legal procedures and legal acts adopted in Ukraine. "Such questions will be raised more frequently, especially considering the fact that another anniversary is ahead - the anniversary of the armed seizure of power in February 2014," the Duma speaker noted. "We see how Ukrainian leaders are fervently searching for successes to cover up in front of their people, in front of Ukrainians. In reality, of course, there are no successes, they are only failures. Kiev paints any benevolent nod or hand-out from Western capitals or another Russophobic gaffe in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, for instance, as a ‘great diplomatic victory’.

Deutsche Bank Is A Complete Joke

The first item that will be pointed out by Wall Street puppets is that a bond buyback would enable DB to book accounting gains, thereby padding net income and book value. But the idiocy of this logic is that gains recognized from buying back bonds at a discount are 100% non-revenue, non-cash generating events. In fact, a bond buyback is a use cash – it further erodes the liquidity of the entity buying back bonds or stock.

The Game is Over – Market Perspective

The fuse has been lit. The world economy is in serious trouble and we have the worst possible people at the helm. You have Obama who wants to double the funding now for the SEC and CFTC to go after the banks because he smells blood. He also wants to add a $10 tax to oil just because he see something else he can tax.

The question becomes, just how long can we try to climb out of this mess before it consumes the entire rope? It does appear that the greatest period of turmoil will be 2017 moving into 2020. Whatever can go wrong – will go wrong. We have everything culminating from a Sovereign Debt Crisis to the War Cycle intermixed with political destabilization.

Indeed, 2017 is going to be the year from political hell. With election is Germany, France, and the referendum in Britain exiting the EU, we then throw in the real potential for the election in the States to flip to Trump. The world as we have known it is coming undone.

According to DPR defense ministry, Kiev forces shelled the DPR territory almost 900 times over the last week. Fed Chair Yellen Rattles Markets Citing Obstacles to Negative Rates

Adding to the market angst was the jumble of questions Fed Chair Janet Yellen received during her semi-annual testimony before the House Financial Services Committee yesterday. One particular line of questioning from multiple members of the Committee was on whether the Federal Reserve has the legal authority to use negative interest rates as part of its monetary policy tools. Central banks in Europe and the Bank of Japan have deployed negative rates and financial markets have a built-in assumption that the Fed could do likewise. Yellen threw a bucket of cold water on that assumption with two revealing remarks.

Parents now being thrown in jail in America for homeschooling their children

That's what seems to be the case in Ohio, whose Republican governor, John Kasich, wants to be the next president of the United States. His state's department of education is so stringently absurd, that for lack of a piece of paper, it seeks to jail parents who dare to homeschool their kids.

As reported by Off The Grid News, two separate households that homeschool their children are facing jail time and thousands of dollars in fines and fees, for just barely missing state deadlines that they knew nothing about.

The charges are as ridiculous as the filings – "contributing to the delinquency of a minor," despite the fact that state nannies acknowledged the children were indeed being schooled at home, in parental education programs that officials later acknowledged met the state's requirements.

Is The US Leading Saudi Arabia Down The Kuwaiti Invasion Road?

For the first time in a long time I feel concerned and worried about the prospect of war. The reaction of Saudi Arabia to the Russian intervention in Syria has always been the wild card in the shifting geopolitical power base in the Middle East. Turkey and Israel, along with Saudi Arabia are the three countries with the most to lose because of a strong alliance between Syria, Iran, Hezbollah, and Russia.

These three traditional American allies have been accustomed to Western support in regards to their own specific regional goals and ambitions. This support has been so staunch and counterproductive to regional stability that the growing comfort and alliance between Iran and the US should be both confusing and worrisome to Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Russia's improved ballistic missiles to be tested as asteroid killers

Russian scientists have developed a project of upgrading intercontinental ballistic missiles to destroy near-Earth meteorites 20-50 meters in size, leading researcher of the Makeyev Rocket Design Bureau Sabit Saitgarayev told TASS on Thursday. The scientists would like to test the improved missiles’ capabilities against the asteroid Apophis expected to come dangerously close to the Earth in 2036, the scientist said. "Most rockets work on boiling fuel. Their fueling begins 10 days before the launch and, therefore, they are unfit for destroying meteorites similar to the Chelyabinsk meteorite in diameter, which are detected several hours before coming close to the Earth. For this purpose, intercontinental ballistic missiles can be used, which requires their upgrade," the scientist said. The improved missiles could be used as the killers of the Apophis asteroid, "which will come dangerously close to the Earth in 2036," he added.

CRASH2: As the big selloff continues, why is anyone surprised that the markets doubt the US Fed?

Watching the live coverage yesterday, I found Janet Yellen’s experience of ‘testifying’ to Congress about US Fed policy, by turns, encouraging and hilarious.

Ms Yellen has that irritating contemporary habit of beginning every answer with “So….”, a tic that I associate with evasion – as in:

“So, you asked me a question there I can’t/won’t answer, therefore I’m going to drone on about tools, experience, volatility, soundness in the economy, regulatory frameworks, spaces, hubs, and getting back to you on that”.

What I found encouraging was that she took a mauling more severe than any I’ve seen in Congress over many years….because that tends to confirm what this triplet of Slog essays is saying: that the markets have lost confidence in the central banker’s ability to pull monetarist rabbits from hats.

Here Is The Exchange That Left A Stunned Janet Yellen Looking Like A Deer In Headlights

For nearly one year, Wisconsin Rep. Sean Duffy has been Janet Yellen's nemesis over the ongoing probe into Fed leakage of material inside information via Medley Global and any other undisclosed channels, one which has seen subpoeans be lobbed at the Fed which has been doing everything in its power to stall said probe, and which cost Pedro da Costa his job when he dared to ask questions at a Fed presser that were not precleared by his WSJ "Fed mouthpiece" peers.

Today, during Yellen's appearance before the House Financial Services committee, Duffy finally had enough, and in a heated exchange asked Yellen what on legal authority is the Fed exerting privilege to ignore a Congressional probe into what is clearly a criminal leak, one which has nothing to do with monetary policy and everything to do with the Fed providing material, market moving information to its favorite media and financial outlets.

To my Fellow Israelis: We Can Stop This

Let me put it out there, clearly and directly:

As Golda Meir told MK Shulamit Aloni: “After the Holocaust, Jews are allowed to do anything.” NO. Damn well not. We’ve used this excuse, with those words or others, together with a systematic cover-up of our own cruelties, since the start. And because we have largely succumbed to our own propaganda in this, we have failed to perceive the historical trace, which, if followed honestly, will show us that we are essentially AT THE SAME PLACE as before – still subjugating, still massacring, still torturing.

Bernie Didn't Win New Hampshire. No Joke.

It's true. Bernie earned 15 delegates by winning 62.5% of the Democratic vote-- the bottom up democratic way. But Hillary also received 15 delegates. The difference is, she earned 9 delegates and the undemocratic, top down Democratic Party-- provides a system that prevents the people from electing people-- enabled her to have six superdelegates. That makes the New Hampshire delegate count a tie.

As it stands, Bernie Sanders could continue to win popular votes in more early primary states and lose or tie elections because the DNC gives Hillary superdelegates. This is comparable to intra-party gerrymandering.

This is bullshit, an outrageous obscenity against justice and Democracy. It should go no further.

Thrill-Ride Thursday - Markets Collapse as Sweden goes Negative

Really, Sweden?

Well, it's just an excuse to sell off on a 30-year auction day (happens almost every one) because it panics people into TBills at ridiculously low rates and makes it look like the Fed is doing its job and people really do want to lend the Government money for 30 years at 2.5% rather than do something productive with the money. Why? Because if people don't want to by 30-year Treasury Notes at 2.5% then one would have to question our Government's $19,000,000,000,000 debt load which, at 2.5%, costs $475Bn in interest payments alone to sustain and if we were to assume rates climb to 5%, then another $475Bn per year would have to be figured into the budget (without asking the Top 1% or Corporations to contribute, of course!).

US A-10s bombed city of Aleppo on Wednesday, shifted blame onto Moscow – Russian military

The US Air Farce! The same outfit that LET 911 happen and the same outfit that bombs hospitals, weddings, schools and funerals. I have to believe the Russians on this one!

Two US Air Force A-10 warplanes carried out airstrikes on Aleppo Wednesday, destroying nine facilities, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported. The same day, the Pentagon accused Moscow of bombing two hospitals, despite no Russian flights over the city.

“No Russian warplanes carried out airstrikes in Aleppo city area yesterday. The nearest target engaged was over 20km away from the city,” Konashenkov stressed, adding that on the contrary, airplanes from the US-led anti-ISIS coalition were active over Aleppo, “both aircrafts and UAVs.”

The spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry drew attention to the stunning similarity of the situation with the American airstrike on the Medecins Sans Frontieres hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan, and the US bombing of the positions of the Iraqi army in Fallujah.

UK politicians green-light plans to record every citizen's internet history

Surveillance legislation proposed by the UK last November has been examined in detail by the country's politicians, with a new report recommending 86 alterations, but broadly approving the powers requested by the government. The parliamentary committee scrutinizing the draft Investigatory Powers Bill said that companies like Apple and Facebook should not be required to decrypt messages sent on their services, but approved plans to record every UK citizen's browsing history for 12 months. The committee also gave a thumbs up to the bulk retention of data, and the targeted hacking of individuals' computers, known as "equipment interference."
