THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

"There is no free lunch for the creature comforts delivered by the corporation. The ravaging of nature, the erosion of economic security, the destabilization of the family, the commercialization of all human relationships, the corruption of democracy, and the dissipation of spiritual meaning in the face of rampant materialism - these are all part of the cost of the corporate system as we know it. And they add up to a very high price to pay for the bounty of the great American shopping mall."-- Charles Derber, Corporation Nation, p178

The NY Times' coverage of Israel-Palestine was Biased Before Bureau Chief's Son Joined the IDF

This week the editors of The New York Times's sprang to the defense of Jerusalem Bureau Chief Ethan Bronner following weeks of controversy over his son's service in the Israeli Defense Forces. Public editor Clark Hoyt praised Bronner's track-record at the Times, in his February 6th column but nonetheless concluded that "covering Israel's conflict with a son in uniform might be cause to reassign even a superb reporter." The Times' Executive Editor Bill Keller said in a response that "the editors discussed the situation and sees no reason to change Bronner's status as bureau chief."

Mashaal in Russia: Israel wants only war

Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal said Monday that Israeli leaders bring "war and occupation" thus blocking peace talks on the Palestinians, Syria and Lebanon.

Mashaal spoke after a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Msocow.

His statement leaves in doubt Russia's desire to host a Mideast peace conference and to involve Hamas, despite strong opposition from Israel and the US.

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued no information about Monday's meeting between Mashaal and Lavrov. Moscow hopes to host a Middle East peace conference but has not yet set a date.

UN likely to refer Goldstone findings to The Hague

Arab states set to force debate that would bring Gaza war crimes claims before international court.

The United Nations is likely to refer the findings of the Goldstone report to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, diplomatic sources in New York said on Saturday.

A decision to bring the report on last year's Gaza war before the court would follow a debate in the UN General Assembly over Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon's response to the document last week.

Yemen and The Militarization of Strategic Waterways

Socotra is at the crossroads of the strategic naval waterways of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden (See map below). It is of crucial importance to the US military.

From a military standpoint, the Socotra archipelago is at a strategic location. Socotra is some 3000 km from the US naval base of Diego Garcia, which is among America's largest overseas military facilities.

On January 2nd, 2010, President Saleh and General David Petraeus, Commander of the US Central Command met for high level discussions behind closed doors.

Obama, The New NeoCon - Military Confrontation Rising

As for timing, the US will not give Israel the green light to attack Iran until another carrier task for joins the two already in the Gulf (USS Enterprise and USS Stennis). The Pentagon has indicated they are prepared to send the USS Nimitz to the Gulf to arrive in April. This indicates that the most likely timing of the attack will be between April and July of this year. The transfer of the Nimitz is being contested by CENTCOM commander Admiral Fallon. He may even be replaced for making statements inferring that an attack on Iran will not occur on his watch.

What's behind renewed war jitters in Israel, Lebanon?

Despite the jitters and the rhetoric from both sides of the border, neither Hezbollah nor Israel appear anxious to embark upon a new round of fighting. Analysts suggest that the spark for a new conflict could come from an incident along the border that flares out of control, such as a rocket attack into Israel. There have been seven isolated firings of short-range rockets into Israel since 2006, all of them suspected of being the work of either Al-Qaeda-affiliated factions or rogue Palestinian groups.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Current events markedly contradict the statement here that "...neither Hezbollah nor Israel appear anxious to embark upon a new round of fighting."

Israel has just done a series of military exercises very close to the Lebanese border recently, and continues illegal flights into Lebanese airspace; these are both very provocative moves.

If Israel attacks Lebanon, this time, they will go all the way to the Litani River, as they are desperate for the water.

Analysis Finds Little Evidence Iranian Public Sees Government as Illegitimate

Indications of fraud in the June 12 Iranian presidential election, together with large-scale street demonstrations, have led to claims that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did not actually win the election, and that the majority of Iranians perceive their government as illegitimate and favor regime change.

An analysis of multiple polls of the Iranian public from three different sources finds little evidence to support such conclusions.

Saudis Raid Yemen Despite Houthi Pledge For Peace

Saudi airstrikes continue to target northern Yemen despite Houthis pledging to meet the key condition of not attacking Saudi Arabia set by the Yemeni government.

Houthi fighters said Tuesday that Saudi warplanes had been bombarding the country’s north, including the Al-Saqin district.

According to the fighters, Saudi forces poured rockets and artillery shells on border areas.

Yemen clashes continue, ceasefire offer rejected

Yemen rejected a ceasefire offer from Shi'ite rebels on Sunday and said fighting was continuing, as neighbouring Saudi Arabia accused the insurgents of mounting sniper attacks inside its territory. The conflict with the northern rebels, who complain of social, religious and economic discrimination in the southern Arabian state, has rumbled on since 2004, but intensified last year and drew in oil-rich Saudi Arabia.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This was a catastrophically bad decision on the part of the Yemeni government, and will only lead to increased fighting and, probably ultimately, a massive civil war.

Panetta met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Defense Minister Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, and intelligence minister, Gen. Omar Suleiman to ask them to dispatch forces to Yemen to help the US troops.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Robert Fisk: The tree-lined bunkers that could change the face of the Middle East

The newly resurfaced Lebanese roads near the border – courtesy of Hizbollah money – suggest that someone might want to move men at high speed towards the frontier. Perhaps even to cross the border.

Israeli army commanders are talking about this in the Israeli press. A fast, dramatic spring across the frontier to the west – in the direction of Naharia, perhaps, or a grab at the settlement of Kiryat Shmona – and Hizbollah would announce it had "liberated" part of historic "Palestine". Israel would have to bomb its own territory to get them out.

Pentagon to Send More Special Forces Troops to Yemen

The Pentagon is assigning more special forces personnel to Yemen as part of a broad push to speed the training of the country's counterterror forces in the wake of the failed Christmas Day attack on a crowded U.S. airliner.

Military officials familiar with the matter said the U.S. will begin rotating the same groups of special forces personnel through Yemen and keeping some of the elite troops there for longer tours, changes designed to help the American trainers develop closer relationships with their Yemeni counterparts.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Sending in more troops, of course!

The bogus "land swap" deal

Should the Palestinians agree to a land swap they would be undermining not only their rights but also any chance for peace. This is because Israel is likely to use the land swap to:

- Deny that the 4 June 1967 lines are the basis for drawing the borders of a future Palestinian state. Israel will use these lines only as a basis for determining the "size" of the land that the Palestinians should receive in compensation.

- Annex areas in the West Bank and carve off lands within or close to Jerusalem, along with land rich in ground water.

- Annex the so-called "large settlement areas", which were created originally as a means of dissecting the West Bank and deterring the creation of a viable Palestinian state.

Yemen near crisis that will pose global threat, foreign ministers warn

Yemen faces a crisis that would threaten global security, foreign ministers from across the world warned yesterday as they met in London to pledge support for the country’s battle with al-Qaeda.

Mrs Clinton warned that in a digital age, radicalisation could take place anywhere. “The question ‘Where?’ in the 21st century may be somewhat beside the point,” she said. “Increasingly, we are having to face whether it’s the UK, the US or Yemen, threats coming from beyond our borders that cannot be pinned on any place.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Hilary Clinton has a magnificent job of asking the absolutely wrong questions.

The question about radicalization is infinitely less about "where", than why.

Unless and until Western powers grab the members of Selah's government collectively by a very sensitive portion of the human anatomy, and demand that corruption stop, strong> there can and will be no end to the radicalization going on here.

When people feel that they can get an education, work, earn decent wages, be comfortable, take care of their families, and that there is hope for their kids' futures, radicalization won't look attractive.

Unfortunately, every since Selah took power, the Yemeni government has presented just the opposite of the above-describe scenario to their people.

Very much as in Afghanistan, the answers here are not military; they are social, political, and economic.

The US, unfortunately, has not yet learned that there are some geopolitical problems which cannot be resolved with bombs and bullets.

US lends firepower to Yemen fight

U.S. and U.K. military personnel were not present, since they’re not allowed to be seen or photographed by the press to avoid drawing attention to their presence on the ground in Yemen, the Yemeni soldier said. His voice was muffled by a black nylon facemask. For his own safety, he said he did not want his identity revealed. He would not give his name or allow himself to be recorded on video.

The presence of Western military personnel in Yemen is “sensitive,” he said, gesturing with an unlit cigarette.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Yemeni governmental officials may think that they can limit US involvement in their fight against the insurgents.

But having American "advisors" training their soldiers is the proverbial camel's nose under the tent.

Unless there are meaningful cease-fires and negotiations to all the battles Yemen is fighting (including a secessionist movement), we are going to see a greatly expanded US military involvement here, whether the Yemeni government wants this or not.

The problems here will never be resolved through military action alone. They are economic, social, and political, in a country with extreme poverty and corruption.

You can't resolve those issues with bullets and bombs.

Yemen: Terrorist Haven or Chess Piece?

So is the current uproar over Yemen a case of a U.S. administration overreacting and stumbling into yet another quagmire in the Middle East? Or is this talk about a “global danger” just a smokescreen to allow the Americans to prop up the increasingly isolated and unpopular regime in Saudi Arabia?

Maybe both, but at least one respected analyst suggests that the game in play is considerably larger than the Arabian Peninsula and may have more to do with the control of the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea than with hunting down al-Qaeda in the Yemeni wilderness.

“Accepting Various Truths”

No one in the Obama administration is going to acknowledge that our foreign policy in the Middle East has alienated many Arabs.

The U.S. pro-Israel policy and our shocking neglect of the beleaguered Palestinians underlie almost every initiative or tactical tilt that comes out of Washington.President Obama and his predecessors in the White House have scored domestic political points by embracing this world view. This is one vantage point that is truly bipartisan, to the point where no one discusses it.

Yemen: Toward Another US Quagmire

Like his predecessor, Obama is recklessly plunging into impoverished Yemen in a bid to shore up US strategic and economic interests in the Middle East. At this stage, the Pentagon has ruled out sending US troops. This reflects concerns that as well as the US military being overstretched by the neo-colonial occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan, sending in ground forces would intensify opposition to President Saleh’s autocratic and widely detested rule.

U.S. Intelligence Found Iran Nuke Document Was Forged

The absence of any date on the document also conflicts with the specificity of much of the information. The Times reported that unidentified "foreign intelligence agencies" had dated the document to early 2007, but gave no reason for that judgment.

An obvious motive for suggesting the early 2007 date is that it would discredit the U.S. intelligence community's November 2007 National Intelligence Estimate, which concluded that Iran had discontinued unidentified work on nuclear weapons and had not resumed it as of the time of the estimate.

Discrediting the NIE has been a major objective of the Israeli government for the past two years, and the British and French governments have supported the Israeli effort.

Sen. Levin Eyes Air Strikes in Yemen

Senator Carl Levin (D – MI) says that military attacks and “most options” should remain on the table in Yemen, and advocated using drones and warplanes to launch unilateral attacks against sites in the country.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Remember that old song "don't know much about history...don't know much about geography...."??

Senator Levin's remarks on Yemen remind me of that phrase.

The more you ramp up an enhanced American military presence against the insurgencies in Yemen, the more you are going to radicalize its people against its government, making joining the rebellion look attractive.

The answers to Yemen's problems are primarily social and economic. Of course, these problems are compounded by the fact that "President" Saleh's government is frequently described as the most corrupt regime in the Middle East, and that takes some doing.

Further US military intervention will compound the problems here, not resolve them.

If Senator Levin really wanted a successful conclusion to the current dire situation in Yemen, he'd working toward a meaningful ceasefire, and negotiations to bring the rebels back to a bargaining table where their complaints can actually be heard and addressed.

He would be working with all his might to assure the US aid is inextricably linked to more government transparency, and their investing in the Yemeni people to lift them out of poverty with opportunities for education and jobs.

Of course, all that would be logical.

The screw turns tighter still on Gaza

Jonathan Cook assesses the significance of new Israeli missile systems designed to shoot down short-range rockets. He argues that the real significance lies in the fact that Israel is tightening the screw even further on Gaza and sending warning signals to the West Bank in order to force a total Palestinian submission.

Obama’s Alternate Universe

When the Obama administration is finally confronted with the reality that there is no possibility for viable economic sanctions against Iran, and that the reform movement inside Iran will never be able to force a regime change in Tehran, war with Iran, however insane and unpalatable, becomes the only option. In the end, it is not the theocracy in Tehran, or an Iranian nuclear program, that will push America to war with Iran, but rather American policy itself, designed as it is not to solve any tangible problem emerging from Iran, but rather to mollify domestic political pressures at home.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The "domestic political pressures" are not pushing this country toward an insane, and possibly, global war; it is the foreign policy of Israel which is driving this potential war.

Washington is merely dancing, catatonically, to its master's tune, and the lyrics of that tune are always the same: the US must "neutralize" any country in the region Israel defines as an "existential threat".

That pretty means just about every other country in the region of the Middle East!

Paul J. Balles argues that post-9/11 arbitrariness and blind revenge by the USA lay behind acts of counter-vengeance by Al-Qaeda and likeminded groups, the latest of which was the attempt by a Nigerian man to bomb an American airliner over Detroit on Christmas Day 2009.

”What was the post-9/11 madness but blind revenge? What were the lockups at Guantanamo but revenge? What is joining Al Qaeda but revenge? Is revenge a legitimate response to an attack on America? Why isn't it equally appropriate for those who have suffered sadistic American brutality?”

Obama's Yemeni odyssey targets China

A year ago, Yemeni President Ali Abdallah Saleh made the startling revelation that his country's security forces apprehended a group of Islamists linked to the Israeli intelligence forces. "A terrorist cell was apprehended and will be referred to the courts for its links with the Israeli intelligence services," he promised.

Saleh added, "You will hear about the trial proceedings." Nothing was ever heard and the trail went cold.

What next, Viva Palestina?

As Egypt stoops to the ultimate collusion with Israel and the West to starve Gaza by banning future humanitarian aid convoys, Stuart Littlewood advises Viva Palestina to deal directly with Gaza: “A large armada of boats led by a multi-faith alliance demanding freedom of the seas and the right to an armed escort, could be the best vehicle.

”Yes, the REAL international community – that’s ordinary folk like you and me and Viva Palestina and everyone and his dog around the globe – are finally beginning to assert themselves against the corrupt power freaks that strut the world stage.”

Obama's Hopeless Romantics: Pseudo-Liberals,Leftists And Lies

I'm puzzled by the current onslaught of self-proclaimed Liberals who hail Obama as their deliverer from Bush-era persecution, subjugation and degradation - the current state of the United States screams a more foreboding sense of reality comprised of nothing more than teleprompted mirages ballooned into creation via empty rhetoric and unsubstantiated promises of change.

Now not all Liberals are 'die-hard' Obama supporters but those who voted for the capricous phony have begun to admit they are 'upset' with Barack Obama. At the start of his seemingly diplomatic advent into power he claimed that Bush-era stratagem would be put to rest yet reality cries out something elusively different - this claim was a vehement and blatant lie.

Arming Yemen would play into al-Qa'ida's hands

The dilemma for the US and Britain is that, as they become more openly supportive of the Yemeni government, they will be targeted as its sponsors by its many enemies. The south of the country, independent until 1990 and defeated in a civil war in 1994, is seething with rebellion. Government forces shoot at protesters. There have been many shootings and arrests, and torture is endemic. "They can make a zebra say it is a gazelle" is a chilling Yemeni saying of the government's interrogation methods.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Aside from lumping all Yemeni insurgents into the lump of "al-Qa'ida", what the UK and the US need to comprehend in one hot hurry is the following: when peaceful revolution is impossible, violent revolution is inevitable.

When people have hope for a meaningful future for themselves, and their families, joining any insurgent group is going to look both unattractive and counter-productive.

But that's going to take an honest effort by Saleh and his government to create the infrastructure which can provide education, jobs, medical care, and a better standard of life for his people. That's what the US and the UK should be pushing for right now here in Yemen.

"Extremism" happens when people have no hope for the future. Give them some hope, in terms of concrete reform, and society has the chance of stabilizing.

Otherwise, a military-only approach will simply exacerbate the problem, not create conditions for healing and reconciliation.

Yemen open to dialogue with Qaeda: president

"If Al-Qaeda (militants) lay down their arms, renounce violence and terrorism and return to wisdom, we are prepared to deal with them," Saleh told Abu Dhabi TV in an interview carried by Yemen's Saba news agency on Sunday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Sounds great, but if Saleh has absolutely nothing new to offer in terms of jobs, education, infrastructure, transparency in government, the bettering of the lot of his people, the insurgents are going to figure that talking will be of absolutely no use.

Unfortunately, both the US and the Saudis are supporting a regime so corrupt that it has been judged one of the most corrupt in the region, and that takes some doing.

The reason for that support has to do with the reality that the Gulf of Aden is a choke-point for the flow of oil. Control the Gulf, and you control who gets the oil.

The US should, along with the massive upgrade in military aid we are giving Yemen, be insisting that President Saleh and his cohorts make an honest effort to improve the lives of the Yemeni people, and give them hope for the future.

Education, jobs, responsive government, and the belief these opportunities inspire that things are getting actually getting better, make joining any insurgency look infinitely less attractive.

But the US and the government of Yemen need to understand: when peaceful revolution is impossible, violent revolution is inevitable.

Never Mind the Facts, Let’s Have a War…

This is a propaganda system at work: the choice of words and framework of logic designed to condition people into accepting certain options. In this case, the pre-determined option is a unilateral military strike on Iran either by the US or Israel. In that event, it will of course be reported by the BBC and other western media as a “pre-emptive” military measure to “prevent” Iran from attacking western interests in the region. Reported too, no doubt, will be the “collateral damage” of civilian casualties – unfortunate victims in an otherwise “just cause” to bring a “hardline regime” to abide by “international norms”. This is classic thought engineering that British political essayist George Orwell exposed so brilliantly – the official use of sanitised words to cover the sordid truth.

Music That Kicks Political Ass: "the fletcher memorial home"

one hears, very far off in the distance, a man shouting, his voice nearly drowned out by the roaring of wind: "Hey! Get your filthy hands off my desert!" and then, a voice, distinct, quite loud in your ear, as if someone standing next to you merely had to lean slightly to ask: "What'd he say?" – and then the unmistakeable sound of a nuclear explosion uncomfortably, impossibly close to ground zero.

Yemen – America’s second Afghanistan and third Vietnam

Uri Avnery considers the USA’s ill-conceived adventures in Afghanistan and Iraq, and their disastrous outcomes, and predicts a similar catastrophe if Washington embarks on another misguided adventure – this time in Yemen.

It is used by organizations that are vastly different from each other, which are fighting in vastly different countries for vastly different objectives. A war on ‘International Terror’ is like a war on ‘International Artillery’ or ‘International Navy’...

Yemen and the War of the Worlds

The correct response to the Nigerian underwear bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is to fix the information sharing problems and modify existing screening procedures in light of the new developments. That would be the sane thing to do, but apparently it is not good enough for the White House. Instead, President Obama has designated a new front for a military confrontation with the terrorist menace, and that will be Yemen. There are reports that special ops soldiers are already in country with plans to introduce still more US soldiers and double the military assistance to Sana’a. By my tally, the US is now actively fighting terrorists in a number of lands to include Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, the Philippines, and Yemen.

Webmaster's Commentary:

In just how many countries does the US have to be fighting before we have a declared "world war"?!?

Obama's Yemeni odyssey targets China

The intervention in Yemen will go down as one of the smartest moves that he ever made for perpetuating the US's global hegemony. It is America's answer to China's surge.

In effect, Uncle Sam is "marking territory" - like a dog on a lamppost. Russia has been toying with the idea of reopening its Soviet-era base in Aden. Well, the US has pipped Moscow in the race.

The US has signaled that the odyssey doesn't end with Yemen. It is also moving into Somalia and Kenya. With that, the US establishes its military presence in an entire unbroken stretch of real estate all along the Indian Ocean's western rim. Chinese officials have of late spoken of their need to establish a naval base in the region. The US has now foreclosed China's options.

Webmaster's Commentary:

While such a move may make geopolitical sense to Obama and his team, ultimately, we are still going to see our kids in the military coming home in body bags as a result from participating in this confrontation.

Does anyone happen to remember how the US started its military involvement in Viet Nam?? by providing military advisors.

Spiteful Mubarak succeeds only in creating a PR disaster for Egypt and himself

Stuart Littlewood pays tribute to the generous-heartedness, human decency and sense of honour of the courageous men and women of the Viva Palestina aid convoy, who made it to Gaza despite the dirty tricks, meanness and brutality of Egypt’s senile Pharaoh, Hosni Mubarak, and his goons.

”Mubarak’s misdeeds have shamed the Egyptian people and indeed all Arabs, and will be written indelibly into the history of the Middle East. Who would have thought that a man of his experience would visibly stoop so low as to invite wholesale ridicule and disgust?”

The Viva Palestina international aid convoy has reached the besieged Gaza Strip, despite the treachery of the senile Pharaoh, Husni Mubarak, the brutality of his treacherous police and the deafening silence of a listless population.

We salute the brave internationalists whose determination, courage and steadfastness has shamed the senile Pharaoh Mubarak and his barbarous, treacherous goons in the army and the "security" apparatuses.

It has been a long, arduous and frustrating journey but one that will have a lasting imprint on the minds of everyone with a conscience.

Once again, the British ruling class has become the first to line up full-square behind the latest military provocation being prepared by Washington. Bankrupt and feeble Yemen ‘can survive for only one year’

“The drop in oil revenues, the increasing burden of maintaining the network of patronage, the various conflicts here and there, will bankrupt the treasury in about a year,” Mr al-Iryani told The Times. “The World Bank says two or three years but there’s no transparency so it’s difficult to say for sure.

“If you rationalise the Government you’ll cut down on corruption. That will free up funds to provide services to places like Marib and Jouf. The reason these places are lawless is that instead of sending schools and hospitals, the regime has sent tanks and cannon,” he said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The answers to Yemen's insurgencies are economic, political, and social, but not military.

But I would almost be willing to bet that the only answers the US brings to the table will be military only, with some kind of stranglehold/blackmail arrangement with the Yemeni government that any US aid will be predicated on a massive US military presence inside the country.

The Yemen Hidden Agenda: Behind the Al-Qaeda Scenarios, A Strategic Oil Transit Chokepoint

For some months the world has seen a steady escalation of US military involvement in Yemen, a dismally poor land adjacent to Saudi Arabia on its north, the Red Sea on its west, the Gulf of Aden on its south, opening to the Arabian Sea, overlooking another desolate land that has been in the headlines of late, Somalia. The evidence suggests that the Pentagon and US intelligence are moving to militarize a strategic chokepoint for the world’s oil flows, Bab el-Mandab, and using the Somalia piracy incident, together with claims of a new Al Qaeda threat arising from Yemen, to militarize one of the world’s most important oil transport routes. In addition, undeveloped petroleum reserves in the territory between Yemen and Saudi Arabia are reportedly among the world’s largest.

Clinton: Yemen War a Global Threat

Despite Secretary Clinton’s comments about laying out expectations, it appears that the US support for the Yemeni government is secure, and the question is exactly how large of a military commitment the Obama Administration intends to make to the conflict.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One has to wonder just what kind of "expectations" Secretary of State Clinton is talking about.

What we should be doing here is using a carrot/stick approach, to make sure that the Yemen government improves the lot of its citizens with better education, opportunity for jobs, housing, and medical care. The greater hope people have for the future, the less likely they will find joining any insurgency attractive.

Of course, that would be logical.

US plans for Mideast peace deal in two years: report

Washington is pushing a plan to restart Israeli-Palestinian peace talks that foresees reaching a final deal in two years and agreeing on permanent borders in nine months, a daily said Monday.

What Washington is pathologically incapable of understanding is that the Israeli government has no concern whatsoever regarding peace; it wants territory, by any means necessary.

Over 70% of Americans in favor of U.S. troops in Yemen – poll

Over 70% of Americans would favor sending U.S. troops to Yemen to combat Al Qaeda militants, a poll posted on the FOXNews.com website said.

With over 20,000 people taking part in the poll, 71% voted that "the problem is not going away," and "troops need to be sent there to eliminate Al Qaeda and the threat it poses to national security."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Ignorance should be painful.

I do not know from which populations the FOX pollsters got these numbers, but it is obvious that those polled have absolutely zero information about the situation on the ground in Yemen.

Yemen is a dictatorship, run by the alleged "President" Selah, who, along with his legislature, are judged to be one of the most corrupt governments in the Middle East, and that is saying something.

The grinding poverty and lack of literacy here, coupled, with the absence of infrastructure, and the absence of any real hope for the people living here, reminds me of that statement "when peaceful revolution is impossible, violent revolution becomes inevitable." And to those living in such a situation, any insurgency (which, BTW, is the primarily the Houthi insurgency) starts looking attractive.

The US should be urging a general cease-fire, and negotiations to include the rebels in talks with the government, so that they become a part of the solution. Saleh, for all the military equipment and financial aid we are going to be pouring into this country in the next 18 months, should be made to understand that the aid is conditional upon upgrading the economic situation of Yemen's people, starting with education, food, and housing.

Of course, the above recommendations would be logical. And the relationship between logic, and the geopolitical decisions of the White House, State Department, and the Pentagon, appear to be tenuous at best with this administration.

With wars in Iraq, Afghanistan,Pakistan (and potentially, Iran), the US military is stretched to its breaking point.

I do hope that the 70% in this pole who voted in favor of sending US troops to Yemen realize that if these wars without end continue, it will most likely their sons and daughters who will be drafted in the not too distant future to make up the gap between our existing troop strengths and the desperate need for more more military personnel.

I would almost be willing to bet that this new draft won't be called a "draft"; most likely, there will be some euphemism like "National Service", but it will have precisely the effect of a draft. It will be mandatory, and kids just out of high school will not be allowed to continue their higher education until they have fulfilled their requirements for national service.

Obama Administration Prepares Public Opinion for Attack on Yemen

Once again, as in the case of Afghanistan and Iraq, American imperialism is preparing a military bloodbath in an impoverished country, using a terrorist attack—in this case a failed attempt—as the pretext. According to reports by the UN and Yemeni government statistics, some 35 percent of the adult population of the country is unemployed. Yemen is the poorest of the Arab countries, has exhausted its very limited oil export capacity, and now faces severe water shortages.

Yemen possesses, like Afghanistan and Iraq, a highly strategic geographic location, adjacent to Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter, and the Red Sea, controlling access to the Suez Canal. Yemen also borders on the Gulf of Aden, the shipping route for much of the oil leaving the Persian Gulf.

Saudi prince says Taliban leader could be U.S. ally

Saudi Prince Turki al-Faisal on Sunday recommended that the Obama administration work with a top Taliban leader who is behind suicide attacks in Afghanistan and was the likely target of a U.S. missile strike just last fall.

Threats shut Yemen’s U.S., U.K. embassies

The U.S. and Britain closed their embassies in Yemen on Sunday in the face of al-Qaida threats, after both countries announced an increase in aid to the government to fight the terror group linked to the failed attempt to bomb a U.S. airliner on Christmas.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Shutting one's embassy is what one does right before a war is declared against the country in which that embassy exists.

However, unfortunately, we are not declaring a war against a country per se, but against its people.

"President" Selah and his minions are known to operate one of the most corrupt governments in the Middle East. There are staggering levels of poverty and illiteracy here. Selah and the rest of his government have absolutely no interest in creating some degree of hope for their people.

Up till now, Saleh was "our man in Yemen", because the US could generally count on him to stomp out any opposition movements rather successfully.

However, when peaceful revolution becomes impossible, violent revolution becomes inevitable, and this is precisely what we are seeing happen now.

The US should have been approaching Yemen's government with a carrot/stick approach in terms of encouraging all parties to provide a better infrastructure, more education, and jobs for their people. Of course, that would have been logical.

When you don't have much to lose but your life (and that's not worth one heck of a lot), any organized insurgency can start looking attractive.

But the current situation in Yemen didn't happen overnight.
Someone in the US State Department and the Pentagon should have seen this coming a mile away.
