US brushes off North Korea's overtures

In a letter to the head of the UN Security Council, North Korea said it was "prepared for both dialogue and sanctions," but warned that if sanctions stayed in place, it would "respond with bolstering our nuclear deterrence."

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US did a grand job of educating North Korea and the world about just what happens to a nation which does not have a nuclear deterrent with the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

US, SKorea in top-level talks on NKorea

The United States and South Korea on Saturday held top-level talks to discuss ways to press North Korea to return to disarmament talks, a day after the communist state's renewed nuclear sabre-rattling.

In a defiant response to tougher UN sanctions imposed after the nuclear test, North Korea said Friday it was building more plutonium-based atomic weapons and had made progress on enriching uranium.

Webmaster's Commentary:

In the immortal words of my late grandmother, "the horse is already out of the barn" on this issue, assuming that what the Korean Central News Agency said the other day is correct.

What the US achieved, by giving North Korea and the world an object lesson in what can happen to a nation which does not have a nuclear deterrent through its invasion and occupation of Iraq, has been to start a nuclear arms race.

US vows strong implementation of NKorea sanctions

The United States on Friday vowed to keep up its tough sanctions regime on North Korea after Pyongyang said it had reached the final stage of enriching uranium.

"We continue to be committed to ensuring that North Korea upholds its international obligations and we continue to strongly implement the sanctions that were approved," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to White House spokesman Robert Gibbs; if in fact North Korea has reached the final stage of enriching uranium, the horse, as it were, is out of the barn.

Unfortunately, the US did a magnificent job of teaching both North Korea and the world a very compelling object lesson of what happens to a country which does not have a nuclear deterrent with the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

NKorea says in final phase of uranium enrichment

North Korea said Friday it has entered the final phase of uranium enrichment for nuclear weapons and is also building more bombs with spent reactor fuel rods.

After the United Nations imposed tougher sanctions in June following its May 25 nuclear test, the North vowed to start such a programme and to extract plutonium from fuel rods.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unfortunately, the US taught North Korea - and the world - a very compelling object lesson in what happens to countries without a nuclear deterrent by its invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq.

North Korea has said it is ready to restart negotiations over its nuclear programme, but that it will only deal directly with the United States, according to Bill Richardson, the governor of New Mexico.

Behind The Clinton 'Rescue' In North Korea

One thing is for sure: The US gave NK some significant concession in return for the release of the reporters. My best guess would be that it involved loosening the financial and banking sanctions imposed on NK because these could be undone without the rest of the world knowing.

The reason for all the denials and secrecy is that Obama has made a big issue of the fact that the former US secret policy of rewarding NK for its continual violation of agreements would stop with his administration--though it clearly hasn't. So the administration has to go to extensive lengths to avoid the appearance of being permissive with NK.

Bush urges unified warning against North Korea

Former US president George W. Bush said Saturday the five nations involved in nuclear disarmament talks with North Korea must send a unified warning against Pyongyang's continued defiance.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This statement reminds me of a classic line from one of the comedian Ron White's standup routines: "you can't fix stupid"

First, North Korea is a client state of China, and China is its largest trading partner. For anything here to work in terms of negotiations must have China behind it one thousand percent.

And it appears that Bush is already suffering from acute, selective amnesia regarding the actions of his administration.

Bush gave North Korea and the world a masterful lesson about what happens to countries without a solid nuclear deterrent through his invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq.

Bill Clinton in N.Korea mission to free reporters

Former US president Bill Clinton arrived in North Korea on Tuesday on a surprise mission to free two jailed US journalists, in what was the highest-profile visit by an American to Pyongyang for nearly a decade.

“Our interest is the successful completion of this issue and to confirm the safe return of the two journalists,” a US official travelling separately with the ex-president’s wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, told reporters.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The story about the journalists is just a smokescreen; convenient, but nothing more than a cover story.

Clinton has been dispatched to Pyongyang to see what it will take to get North Korea back to the bargaining table. He would not be meeting with Kim Jong-Il, were this not the case.

Of course, this time, the US had better honor the commitments it makes (unlike what happened during the Bush administration)

Pictured: U.S. missile defence test hailed a success as North Korea tensions rise

The latest US missile defence test, conducted last night in Hawaii waters, was deemed a success as tensions continue with North Korea over that country's missile programme.

There had been speculation North Korea would launch a missile toward Hawaii - about 4,500 miles away - to coincide with the July 4 Independence Day holiday in the US.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A short memo to whoever actually wrote this piece of tripe.(If you have any kind of a science advisor, it might be useful actually talking to them before writing an article like this!)

As reported in:

http://astroprof.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!9914389DC1F1ADC6!606.entry

"Accuracy of the Taepodong-2 rocket is believed to be poor, particularly as the target range increases. At extreme range, it would probably be lucky if the rocket landed close enough to its designated target to do any damage at all, even with a nuclear warhead."

The Taepo-Dong missile is notoriously difficult for the North Korean Military to control, in terms of staging and targeting. In other words, in its current configuration, it probably couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

And unfortunately, with regard to North Korea's missile and nuclear programs, the US has given a magnificent object lesson to that country and the world about what happens to a nation which does not have a working nuclear deterrent, as was the case of the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

Clinton trades jibes with 'no friends' North Korea

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Thursday that North Korea had "no friends left" to defend it from nuclear sanctions, triggering vitriolic defiance from the Stalinist regime.

Pyongyang hurled invective at "schoolgirl" Clinton and declared disarmament talks dead, as she told Asia's largest security forum that international efforts to squeeze the North over its atomic programme were paying off.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to SoS HRC: North Korea is a client state of China, which is its largest trading partner, just in case you had managed to forget that.

Call me silly, but I would consider that a very powerful friend at this time for North Korea.

North Korea appears to think that it doesn't have to go back to the negotiating table at this point, and apparently it is not getting a great deal of pressure from China to do so.

Unfortunately, the US gave both North Korea and the world a magnificent object-lesson in what happens to a country which doesn't have a nuclear deterrent capability with the invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq.

Clinton concerned by NKorea-Myanmar military links

Fears about military cooperation between the two isolated states escalated after a US Navy destroyer last month began tracking a suspect North Korean ship that was reportedly heading for Myanmar

US officials said a key thrust of Clinton's debut at the forum would be to crank up pressure on North Korea to return to multilateral nuclear disarmament talks after its recent missile and nuclear weapons tests.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The only country in the world which can exert any "pressure" on either North Korea or Myanmar is China, should China be so inclined.

Both of these countries are, essentially, client states of China, which makes any military actions against them by the west a big, tacky, hairy "no-no".

So if there is any engagement to be done, China must be persuaded that it is in China's best interests to bring Kim Jong-Il back to the bargaining table; that is, if China can, considering that in the last round of talks with North Korea, the US did not keep its promises.

Obama, Medvedev and the Demise of Nuclear Deterrence

It is not entirely clear to us why the international community considers it wholly legitimate for the United States to say, "if North Korea engages in aggression against South Korea or the United States, we will retaliate with nuclear weapons," while it universally condemns North Korea when it says, "if the United States engages in aggression against us, we will retaliate with nuclear weapons." S. Korea boosts defense spending, warns of first-strike capability

In a reversal of the usual pattern, South Korea is now warning North Korea that it is developing a first-strike capacity against the communist country.

A South Korean defense reform plan, reported on by the Korea Times, describes the country’s plans for a defense network that would link surveillance satellites, high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft and early-warning radar in an effort “to remove North Korea’s asymmetrical military threat of nuclear and missile programs.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

OK, all adults in the room in Seoul, Washington, Pyongyang, and Shanghai; please, let's ratchet the rhetoric down from everyone. These escalating threats are not making things better for the Korean peninsula; only worse.

The leadership of North Korea may be many things, but they are not stupid. I seriously doubt that they would consider any kind of attack against South Korea or Japan, unless they themselves had actually been attacked. because they understand what the swift retribution would be from the US, as in melting North Korea into a puddle of green glass.

We need to move from this war of words into real negotiations with the North Korean government, and the only player who can make this happen is China.

And if China is able to get North Korea back to the bargaining table again regarding its nuclear program, this time, the US had bloody well keep its word, unlike what happened in the last round of negotiations.

Official: US Won’t Forcibly Board North Korean Ship

At the time of the resolution, which the White House touted as a “strong and united international response,” many analysts had noted that the provisions were ultimately unenforceable. It seems that in its pursuit of the ship based on its suspicions, the US has ultimately proved that analysis accurate.

Webmaster's Commentary:

More sound and fury, signifying... nothing.

The only sane thing to to is beg China to get North Korea back to the bargaining table, and this time, the US needs to keep its word when it makes a bargain with the North Korean leadership.

South to Boost Surgical Strike Capability Against North

The South Korean military plans to speed up efforts to deploy ground, air and naval weapons systems for use in strikes against key facilities in North Korea in the event of war, the Ministry of National Defense said Friday.

The updated plan is focused on securing independent capabilities to remove North Korea's asymmetrical military threat of nuclear and missile programs by deploying sophisticated surveillance, reconnaissance and striking assets.

In the case of an emergency, the military could conduct pre-emptive strikes against nuclear and missile facilities, an official at the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said

US general: Prepare for terrorist tactics from North Korea

Gen. Walter "Skip" Sharp said that means the South Korean military should prepare by conducting as much realistic training as possible – likely with the aid of the US.

"I believe we will face IEDs and insurgent forces in addition to large conventional attacks," said General Sharp in remarks there Tuesday. "We must immediately begin preparing both ROK [Republic of Korea] and US forces to improve our capabilities in these areas." Sharp didn't mention the "thinking enemy" by name until the end of his prepared remarks. "North Korea is watching and I am convinced that discussing and demonstrating the strength, capabilities, and leadership of the ROK army is the best deterrence."

Webmaster's Commentary:

One has to wonder is General Sharp's verbal salvo is some kind of preparation to "groom" the American people for some kind of false flag to justify another war in Korea.

There are only a couple of minor problems with this.

North Korea has a defense treaty with China; the US has a defense treaty with China.

A shooting war with North Korea means that China must, under its treaty obligation, defend North Korea.

War with China, anyone, not to mention China's capability of "dumping" billions of dollars of US debt with which we have been funding our other wars without end?

Let's hope that some adults in the room in Washington realize that this would be the worst of all possible outcomes.

If we are able to get North Korea back to the bargaining table (after the US having broken its word the last time around), it will take a lot of wheeling and dealing by China to make that happen.

US needs to be able to search NKorea ships: Top lawmaker

The United States needs to "figure out some way" to board and search North Korean ships suspected of carrying weapons or nuclear know-how, a senior US lawmaker said Thursday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The only reason I can think that McConnell is pushing so hard for this is that he believes that the only way the US can possibly pull out of its current economic death-spiral is another major war.

A non-consensual maritime interdiction by US forces would be incendiary, and would be - rightly - considered an act of war by North Korea.
But let's remember something here: North Korea has a defense pact with China, and South Korea has a defense pact with the US.

Let us hope that there are some adults in the room in Washington , Pyongyang, and China who will not let things get out of control.

The US Government got out of the depression that resulted from the crash of 1929 by getting into WWII. Now we are seeing the aftermath of the crash of 2008. Pentagon Deploys Experimental Missile Shield to Hawaii

First came the attempted launch in April. Then, last month, Pyongyang detonated a test nuclear device, which may or may not have worked as planned. Now the Norks are threatening to launch another Taepodong-2 missile, with a 4,000-mile range, towards Hawaii — and Gates is pulling out all the stops, to prepare for an intercept.

That means sending Army Terminal High-Altitude Air Defense missile systems, still in development, to the islands, and deploying the SBX radar. Joint Chiefs vice chairman General James Cartwright said he was “90-plus percent” sure the U.S. could intercept a Nork missile, in the unlikely event it overflew U.S. territory.

Webmaster's Commentary:

THAAD and SBX, are problematic and non-robust systems, in terms of their design and testing histories.

But then, they're primarily for show in this escalating war of words.

The type of missile North Korea is looking to launch doesn't have the range to hit Hawaii, and has had a bad track record in terms of staging issues.

And even if these missiles were capable of hitting Hawaii, there is one certainty here: Kim Jong-Il and his military are many things, but they are not stupid. They would not do something which would have the guaranteed result of their country turned into molten shards of green glass by a US counter-strike.

The U.S. is also deploying missile-defense weapons to Hawaii that would theoretically be capable of shooting down a North Korean missile, should such an order be given, he said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The North Korean Missile does not have the range to reach Hawaii and obviously North Korea is not going to do something so stupid as to give the US the excuse the US Government wants to crank up a major war. So this "fortification" is just for propaganda purposes.

U.S. Military Set to Intercept North Korean Ship Suspected of Proliferating Missiles, Nukes

The U.S. military is planning to intercept a flagged North Korean ship suspected of proliferating weapons material in violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution passed last Friday, FOX News has learned.

The USS John McCain, a navy destroyer, will intercept the ship Kang Nam as soon as it leaves the vicinity off the coast of China, according to a senior U.S. defense official. The order to inderdict has not been given yet, but the ship is getting into position.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Just like Haaretz, Fox(faux)News loves to non-source a number of its articles, which it spews into the blogosphere like excess mucus from a sneeze.

Notice the use of the terms "...according to a senior US defense official", and "appears to be heading toward Singapore", again, "according to a senior US military official", and "a possible interdiction".

U.S. Military Tracking North Korean Ship Suspected of Proliferating Missiles, Nukes

The U.S. military is tracking a flagged North Korean ship suspected of proliferating weapons material in violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution passed last Friday, FOX News has learned.

The ship, Kang Nam, left a port in North Korea Wednesday and could be carrying weaponry, missile parts or nuclear materials.

Webmaster's Commentary:

That ship could be carrying kimchee, too!

But it doesn't matter what it is carrying; the moment the US interdicts that ship (fancy USA-speak for piracy), that will be the very provocation North Korea warned they would respond to.

In other word, the US Government, unable to get a war in Iran going, is going to start a war with North Korea.

The DC boys know they have screwed the economy. They know it. They know you know it. Nuclear North Korea poses a 'grave threat': Obama

"North Korea has abandoned its own commitments and violated international law," Obama said, alongside Lee during his first appearance in the White House Rose Garden with a foreign leader.

"Its nuclear and ballistic missile programs pose a grave threat to (the) peace and security of Asia and to the world."

Webmaster's Commentary:

(Ahem). Memo to President Obama: what's that old maxim about people living in glass houses and not throwing stones?

The US did not keep its word in the last round of negotiations with North Korea.

North Korea has been given a magnificent object lesson, courtesy of US foreign policy, about what happens when a country doesn't have a nuclear deterrent, as in the case of the invasion and occupation of Iraq, which was premised on a "confession" achieved through the use of torture.

Our leverage is limited right now, and the only player in the game which can possibly help is China, which is North Korea's number one trading partner.

And if we can manage to get North Korea back to the bargaining table, this time, we need to keep our word if and when an agreement is reached.

This is a textbook case of media propaganda. Read the quote. What Pak is actually saying is that North Korea will RESPOND to the "slightest provocation". Non-consensual maritime interdiction can absolutely be interpreted as an act of war.

However, Kim Jong-Il may be many things, but stupid isn't one of them.

He understands very clearly that attacking South Korea or any other country in the area would be met with an American response which would turn all of North Korea into one smoldering mass of green glass.

Unfortunately the US has given both North Korea and the world a magnificent object lesson as to what can happen when a country doesn't have a nuclear deterrent with the invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq.

And Biden's claim that "... the administration has no idea what North Korea is seeking..." is, simply put, a large, steaming crock.

By chucking the 1953 Armistice, North Korea has telegraphed to the world that what they want is a permanent peace treaty, with guarantees of sovereignty, and trade opportunities. The last time China was able to get North Korea to the conference table, the US did not keep its word on its promises.

If China is able to get its recalcitrant client-state back to the conference table, this time, the US has to make good on its promises.

That is the only way of defusing the tensions here.

Of course, there are some in Washington who see yet another war (any war, thank you very much) as the only way to distract the American people from the wholesale decline in their standard of living being forced upon them by this predatory government.

N. Korea Warns of Nuke War

North Korea "is completely within the range of U.S. nuclear attack and the Korean peninsula is becoming an area where the chances of a nuclear war are the highest in the world," the Tongil Sinbo commentary said.

The above was taken directly from the article, and at the same time, the headline is the same as the one that initially pointed me there. It is directly from the front-center-feature of Yahoo's main page. What appear to be concerns of a US-fueled escalation are "headlined" into something sounding like a threat from the North. Un-be-F-ing-lievable.

N.Korea to build more nuclear bombs after UN vote

"It has become an absolutely impossible option for the DPRK (North Korea) to even think about giving up its nuclear weapons," the statement said, adding it would consider any blockade as an act of war and would retaliate militarily.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unfortunately, the US has given North Korea and the world a magnificent object lesson as to what happens to countries which do not have a nuclear deterrent, as in the case of Iraq.

The sanctions have driven North Korea even further away from any negotiations, no matter how much China would like to see them come back to the table.

China and North Korea have a mutual defense treaty.

The US and South Korea have a mutual defense treaty.

One really stupid move by anyone here (particularly in the case of a botched maritime interdiction) could conceivably spark a huge military confrontation, with China and the US with no option but to honor their respective treaty agreements to North and South Korea.

I would like to hope that some adults in the room in the corridors of power in Seoul,Washington, and Beijing are working 24/7 to prevent that from happening.

North Korea declares all-out push for nuclear weapons

North Korea has declared it will weaponise all its plutonium stocks and threatened military action against the United States and its allies after the UN security council imposed new sanctions to punish Pyongyang for last month's underground nuclear test.

A spokesman for the country's foreign ministry today acknowledged for the first time that North Korea is developing a uranium enrichment programme and said it would be "impossible" to abandon its nuclear ambitions.

China Warns Against Force in Carrying Out North Korea Sanctions

China warned about the dangers involved in inspecting North Korean cargo under United Nations Security Council sanctions approved yesterday, saying countries intercepting vessels should avoid armed action.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What do they mean by the following statements?

"The U.S. is prepared to “confront” a vessel suspected of carrying an illegal shipment and attempt to board it “consensually,” Rice told reporters. If the crew refuses a boarding or to go to a nearby port for an inspection, the U.S. would make clear “whose vessel it is” and the likely cargo, “to shine a spotlight on it, to make it very difficult for that contraband to continue to be carried forward,” Rice added. "

And what is really going to happen if the US is forbidden to board "consensually"?!? How are they really going to be able to get at true registration and manifest issues without a true inspection?

The answer is, they can't

All it will take is for one maritime interdiction to go south, and North Korea will declare that an act of war.

The US is bound to defend South Korea, through the 1953 Mutual Defense Treaty.

China is bound to defend North Korea by its 1961 mutual defense treaty with North Korea.

The last thing adults in the room in the halls of power in Beijing, DC, and Seoul want is a military confrontation between North and South Korea, because of those treaties.

Tough sanctions may provoke NKorea: US envoy

Tough new UN sanctions against North Korea will have "teeth to bite" which could prompt Pyongyang to react with a "further provocation," the US envoy to the United Nations Susan Rice warned Friday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Secretary Rice: what North Korea wants, after having chucked the armistice, is a peace and security treaty with both the US and South Korea.

What will fix the problem (using all the pressure China can bring to bear, coupled with the US keeping its promises this time) is for China to get North Korea back to the conference table, and make such a peace and security agreement possible.

However, that would be logical.

And as always, logic and American foreign policy have just about as much of a symbiotic relationship as does matter to anti-matter.

The sanctions appear to have been crafted to provoke an incendiary reaction from North Korea, making them absolutely opposite set of steps to those which would actually reduce tensions, and make good-will negotiations possible here.

Jun 12 07:49

UN Considering Maritime Interdiction Among UN Sanctions

As worked out by the five veto-empowered U.N. Security Council members — the U.S., China, Russia, France and Britain — plus two of North Korea's most concerned neighbors, Japan and South Korea, the new sanctions would ban North Korea from exporting all weapons, including ballistic missiles.

What could be different this time are provisions for inspection of vessels on the high seas or in seaports if the ships are reasonably suspected of carrying prohibited arms, including nuclear- and missile-related items.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Maritime interdiction would be interpreted by North Korea as an act of war.

And even though in its nascent phase of nuclear arms development, North Korea could still wield some very serious hurt on South Korea were this to happen.

The writer of this article appears to be shilling for a military confrontation with North Korea, and some in this country are looking at another war (any war) to distract the American people from what they're dealing with economically.

Ultimately, a war against North Korea is not the answer. Kim Jong-Il has appointed his successor, and is in very frail health.

Getting China to bring to bear any possible pressure to bring North Korea back to the bargaining table (with the US actually keeping its word on its promises) is a far better solution than provocation.

W.House expects N.Korea to act 'recklessly'

The White House has said it has come to expect North Korea to act "recklessly" amid media reports Pyongyang was preparing for a third nuclear test in response to threats of UN sanctions.

Webmaster's Commentary:

No, the White House is fervently hoping that North Korea will act "recklessly" to take people's attention away from the US's economic meltdown which is keeping this country reeling.

Ultimately, by chucking the Armistice, Kim Jong-Il is hoping for a permanent peace treaty with the US and the South, and opportunities for trade.

Additionally, the US has given the world a very clear object lesson of what happens to countries which do not have a nuclear deterrent with the invasion and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Jun 11 08:47

Obama moves aggressively against North Korea

One of Obama?s chief strategists told the New York Times that the US president had no intention of offering North Korea further incentives to adhere to previous deals to dismantle its nuclear facilities.

The 2007 agreement broke down last December. North Korea had kept its side of the bargain, by shutting down and beginning to dismantle its nuclear reactor and reprocessing plant at Yongbyon. The Bush administration, however, only reluctantly took the first step of taking North Korea off the US State Department?s list of state sponsors of terrorism and continued to insist on new verification measures before further steps were taken.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US did not keep its word to North Korea in former negotiations.

North Korea is a client state of China, which holds all the cards toward getting a reluctant government back to the table for talks; and this time, if the US actually keeps its word, the world may actually see a drop in rhetoric, and a movement toward a true peace and security treaty, including trade, which North Korea so desperately wants and needs.

Anything other approach than that is an absolute recipe for disaster.

Two U.S. journalists who were detained in North Korea while covering the plight of defectors living along the China-North Korea border have been sentenced to 12 years in labor prisons, the country's state-run media said Monday.
The Central Court of North Korea sentenced Laura Ling and Euna Lee for the "grave crime they committed against the Korean nation and their illegal border crossing," the Korean Central News Agency said.

As a result, the court sentenced the women to "12 years of reform through labor," meaning they will serve out their sentence in a labor prison.

N.Korea agrees to talks with S.Korea: officials

The North has accepted a proposal for working-level talks on June 11 at the Kaesong joint industrial complex just north of the border, according to South Korea’s unification ministry.

The two sides held their first government-level talks in more than a year on April 21. The North demanded pay rises for its workers and land-use fees at the Seoul-funded estate.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Hopefully, this meeting will be a start for better relations between both Koreas.

Ultimately, however, by chucking the 1953 armistice, Kim Jong-Il has signaled to the world that he is looking for a permanent peace treaty with security and trade guarantees, enabling North Korea to grow.

OK Mr. Gates. What Now?

One of the first things you learn in diplomacy 101 is not to make threats you can’t back up.

But that is just what US Defense Secretary Robert Gates did last week by thundering the US "would not accept," and "would not stand idly by" while North Korea continued to develop nuclear weapons.

North Korea’s nuclear weapons threaten the entire globe, warned Gates, whose own Pentagon has some 10,000 nuclear warheads deployed at home and abroad, 28,500 troops permanently based in South Korea, and large contingents in Japan, Okinawa and Guam.

Not to be out-threatened, North Korea warned back that if attacked, it would turn South Korea’s capitol, Seoul, into "a sea of fire" and bombard Japan

US Won’t Accept North Korea as a Nuclear State

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said today that the US “will not stand idly by as North Korea builds the capability to wreak destruction on any target in the region — or on us.” He also urged a unified international response to what he characterized as an unhelpful series of tests.

Webmaster's Commentary:

And, SecDef Gates, just what can we do about North Korea?

Need I remind you who North Korea's number-one trading partner is, China?!?!?

We have absolutely no bargaining chips here, unless we can persuade China to lend one big hand in leading Kim Jong-Il to the bargaining table, replace the armistice with a permanent peace treaty, and allow for trade, educational, and cultural exchange with North Korea.

We have managed to normalize our relationship with Vietnam; why not North Korea?

Gates: N. Korea should weigh moves carefully

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates warned North Korea on Saturday that the United States would respond quickly if moves by the communist government threaten America or its Asian allies.

"We will not stand idly by as North Korea builds the capability to wreak destruction on any target in the region — or on us," Gates told an annual international meeting of defense and security officials from Asia and the Pacific Rim.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Our options here are very limited. China is North Korea's largest trading partner, and its diplomacy is probably the best remedy in terms of persuading North Korea to cool its rhetoric, if this can at all be done.

By saying that the armistice no longer applies, it could well be that Kim Jong Il is looking for a permanent peace treaty with South Korea, coupled with aid and trade opportunities with the West.

U.S. ‘Likely’ Could Intercept North Korean Missile

U.S. ground-based interceptor rockets would “likely” knock out a long-range North Korean missile before it could reach the American mainland, the Pentagon’s independent testing official said today.

“I believe we have a reasonable chance” of an intercept, Charles McQueary, director of operational test and evaluation, said in an interview as North Korea defied international condemnation of a nuclear test with another short-range missile launch.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Charles McQueary: the North Korean government is many things, but not suicidal. They understand that such an action would cause the US to react with the rage and devastation which could cause the entire country to be burnt to a cinder.

And if, for all the money having been spent on our US ground-based interceptor rockets, the best we can expect is a "likely" intercept, I want my portion of my tax dollars which have paid for this system, which seems to not be able to do its job, back

Americans deserve better than a "reasonable chance" of an intercept.

Kim Jong Il’s provocations to the West may hide a rational purpose

The most common analysis is that it is an effort to capture the attention of the Government that matters most to North Korea — the US Administration of Barack Obama. Mr Kim wants one thing more than any other — a comprehensive peace treaty, with guarantees of North Korean security, in place of the flimsy armistice, and all underwritten by the US. It is towards this end that all his mischief-making, and his nuclear programme, are bent; and he will have eagerly noted Mr Obama’s inauguration promise to reach out a hand to America’s antagonists.

Pelosi (D-Calif.) said her delegation had always planned to press the Chinese on the issue, but North Korea¹s announcement Monday that it had successfully completed a nuclear test made the need more urgent.
"These reported tests underscore the message our congressional delegation planned to deliver to top Chinese government leaders during our meetings later this week: the Chinese must use their influence to help bring North Korea to the table for the Six-Party talks," Pelosi said in the statement.

With no US troops available, the Bush administration is revamping US war doctrine to allow for "preventative nuclear attack." US Hypocrisy on North Korea: Let's Talk About Israel's Nukes

Obama used the launch in his major address in Prague, which has been characterized as an anti-nuclear speech. “Rules must be binding,” he said of North Korea’s launch. “Violations must be punished. Words must mean something.”

Many countries around the world certainly see hypocrisy in the Obama administration’s position on North Korea. Israel has repeatedly been condemned by the UN for its occupation of Palestinian lands. Moreover, it has hundreds of nuclear weapons with estimates ranging from 200-400 warheads. What’s more, Israel and the US are in league with North Korea in the small club of nations that have refused to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.
