Scientists Recommend Dangerous Antipsychotic Drugs to Treat Cancer

Susanne Posel, Contributor
Activist Post

The Obama administration recently announced that the US government will assist pharmaceutical corporations in finding prescription drugs to treat new diseases.

The focus of this collaboration will identify new uses for drugs that have already been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"We need to speed the pace at which we are turning discoveries into better health outcomes,” said Dr. Francis Collins, of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). “NIH looks forward to working with our partners in industry and academia to tackle an urgent need that is beyond the scope of any one organization or sector.”

Obama signed Executive Order (EO), Establishing the National Prevention, Health Promotion and Public Health Council in 2010.

Gloom of Night

Congress leaves the postal service unable to do its job and unable to stop.

BARRON'S: The U.S. Postal Service is about to go insolvent, unless a gridlocked Congress writes a check real soon. Actually, the postal service long has been a ward of the state, unable to support itself because of political interference and clumsy regulation intended to support its half-million workers at the expense of its customers. Unlike a real self-supporting business, it can't set its prices or control its costs or determine the services it will offer without saying "Mother, may I?" to Congress and the Postal Regulatory Commission.

McDonald’s Rejects Anti-Obesity Campaign, ‘Proud’ of ‘Responsible’ Menu

Anthony Gucciardi
Activist Post

After shareholders proposed altering the McDonald’s menu to help cut down on climbing obesity rates, particularly childhood obesity rates, it was quickly rejected by both the corporate board and retiring Chief Executive Jim Skinner.

Instead of adopting the policy, which was actually drafted in an attempt to enhance worker productivity and overall quality of life, the former CEO instead stated that he was ‘proud’ of McDonald’s menu changes. The quote was matched by the incoming CEO Don Thompson, who stated that the food options were very ‘responsible’.

If you are even slightly familiar with the ingredients present in foods on the McDonald’s menu (yes, even ‘healthy’ salads), then it is obvious to you why these statements are outwardly fictitious.

In fact, you need only to examine what exactly makes up a ‘chicken nugget’ at McDonald’s...

New research published this week in the journal Heart has confirmed the findings of two controversial studies on calcium supplementation and heart attack risk published in the British Medical Journal last year, and which found a 24-27% increased risk of heart attack for those who took 500 mg of elemental calcium a day.[1] [2]

The results of this newest review, involving 24,000 people between the ages of 35 and 64, were even more alarming. Those participants who took a regular calcium supplement increased their risk of having a heart attack by 86% versus those who took no calcium supplements at all...

Over the course of the past few months, I have spent a good deal of time reflecting on my mostly healthy diet, my relatively good health, and the possible if not probable relationship between the two. It has been quite the journey of discovery.

Starting with the documentaries 'Forks Over Knives' (what we put on our forks may eliminate the need for the surgical knife), 'Food, Inc.' (big business controlling our food supply), 'Hungry For Change' and the 'Temple Grandin' story, I have tried to debunk some of the hearsay out there so that I can make sensible decisions about the foods I consume. Just after France legislators and officials moved to ban Monsanto’s genetically modified strain of GMO maize over environmental and health concerns, the European Union has decided to step in and re-secure Monsanto’s presence in the country — against the very will of the nation itself.

This should come as no surprise when considering the fact that the United States ambassador to France, a business partner to George W. In fact, ambassador Craig Stapleton went as far as to say that the nations should be threatened with military-style trade wars...

After Swine Flu Failure, New Study Inspires Scientists to Develop Universal Vaccine

Susanne Posel, Contributor
Activist Post

A new study to be published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, says that those who were vaccinated with the swine flu vaccine have developed antibodies against many other strains of flu; including the H1N1 strain.

The swine flu vaccine, simply called the H1N1 vaccine, is the same one administered in 2009 to save the population from the pandemic that wasn’t.

The researchers of the study had hoped to develop a universal vaccine to be administered to everyone. They were attempting to protect against a broad range of flu strains and viruses, say Rafi Ahmed, study researcher and director of Emory University’s Vaccine Center.

Each year, a new vaccine for the flu is developed because 1) the potency of the vaccine wanes over time, and 2) the strains mutate so quickly that the quest for a universal vaccine has been simply out of reach for scientists...

Exposure to common agricultural fungicide shown to influence rat behavior for generations

Madison Ruppert, Contributor

A new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that pregnant rats exposed to the common agricultural fungicide vinclozolin pass on the damage to their descendants.

While the co-author stated that the purpose of the study was to investigate potential phenomena which are caused by exposure to the chemical, not to assess the risk humans face, rats are regularly used as models.

Like bisphenol-A (which the Food and Drug Administration refuses to ban from food packaging despite indications that it is a similarly dangerous endocrine disruptor even at low doses), this chemical has been shown to interrupt the course of normal sexual development, among other dangers.

For those who are unfamiliar, vinclozolin – sold under brand names Ronilan, Curalan, Vorlan and Touche – is used to fight various diseases which target crops, such as molds, rots, blights and is even regularly used on golf courses...

The use of two toxic substances – styrene and formaldehyde – is causing numerous health complications.

It is no big secret that formaldehyde is a very dangerous substance – the mere vapor content, when exposed to the atmosphere has been found to be very risky for the environment.

Normally this is only cause for concern for those of us that embalm corpses professionally; most of the preserving agents used contain formaldehyde or are entirely composed of formaldehyde. However, in the past year there has been some relatively widespread concern (surprisingly within the government structure) of whether or not the general public is exposed to TOO much formaldehyde, potentially causing many cases of cancer that could have been avoided...

After a recent trip to the juice bar at the Naples Whole Foods – a place, mind you, I usually avoid at all costs because they don’t explicitly label the ingredients in their prepared foods as being certified organic – I allowed my good judgment to be euthanized by the sweet-sounding clerk’s assurance that they use "mostly organic" ingredients, with the highly non-binding qualification: "whenever possible."

Of course, my main concern with not buying 100% organic juice is the greater likelihood that the produce was grown in factory-farmed animal manure, or raw-human sewage, which is a breeding ground for serious, even deadly pathogens, and which may contaminate both the food grown in it, and the people who consume the contaminated food...

The Baby Boomers are being targeted because of the rampant drug use in the '80s with needles, as well as blood transfusions that were in great use during the '90s; before blood screening was common place.

The CDC says this “generational epidemic” will claim more Baby Boomers unless they are vaccinated...

Kodak Had a Secret Nuclear Reactor Loaded With Enriched Uranium Hidden In a Basement

Kodak may be going under, but apparently they could have started their own nuclear war if they wanted, just six years ago. Down in a basement in Rochester, NY, they had a nuclear reactor loaded with 3.5 pounds of enriched uranium—the same kind they use in atomic warheads.
But why did Kodak have a hidden nuclear reactor loaded with weapons-grade uranium? And how did they get permission to own it, let alone install it in a basement in the middle of a densely populated city?
Nobody really knows. Kodak officials now admit that they never made any public announcement about it. In fact, nobody in the city—officials, police or firemen—or in the state of New York or anywhere else knew about it until it was recently leaked by an ex-employee. Its existence and whereabouts were purposely kept vague and only a few engineers and Federal employees really knew about the project.

Marriage License is a Trap

We innocently forfeit our legal and parental rights when we
purchase a marriage license.

The marriage license began in the middles ages as a private contract between two families. Most of the time this was recorded in the local church with or without eyewitnesses. Usually the word of a couple that stated they were married was sufficient to have the marriage recorded as such.

According to Black's Law Dictionary, the word license is defined as - "Permission by competent authority to do an act which without such permission, would be illegal."

In other words, the government makes something that was lawful to do, illegal. They then charge you a fee (which is a bribe) to turn their backs and give you a permit that allows you to break the law that they just said was illegal to do!

What Do GMO Seeds Have to Do With Bee Die-Offs in the Corn Belt?

No farmer in their right mind wants to poison pollinators. When I spoke with one Iowa corn farmer in January and told him about the upcoming release of a Purdue study confirming corn as a major pesticide exposure route for bees, his face dropped with worn exasperation. He looked down for a moment, sighed and said, "You know, I held out for years on buying them GE [genetically modified or engineered] seeds, but now I can't get conventional seeds anymore. They just don't carry 'em."

This leaves us with two questions: 1) What do GE seeds have to do with neonicotinoids and bees? and 2) How can an Iowa corn farmer find himself feeling unable to farm without poisoning pollinators? In other words, where did U.S. corn cultivation go wrong?

The short answer to both questions starts with a slow motion train wreck that began in the mid-1990s: Corn integrated pest management (IPM) fell apart at the seams. Rather, it was intentionally unraveled by Bayer and Monsanto.

Dropping Planes, Not Bombs: US Attack on Iran with F-22 Stealth Fighters would be Laughable

The Iranian military must be enjoying the latest spectacle of Pentagon waste and bungling.

The problem is that those F-22 Raptors are duds. They may fly fast, and may even be hard to spot on radar (though that claim has been debunked by many experts), but they have a fatal defect in their life-support system. Pilots who fly them have been having their oxygen supply cut off with disturbing regularity, leading to deaths, crashes and to forced landings by pilots who realized they were getting dopey or losing consciousness.

Of course heart disease is rampant among the population, meaning that a large percentage of individuals therefore have an increased risk of sudden death when taking this popular drug to treat infection. While the odds of sudden death affecting the patient are not very high, the findings led researchers to urge doctors to reconsider prescribing the drug...

To put it in perspective, consider this: Last year, the Fed earned more than America's top five largest banks -- JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs -- combined.

It's also more than twice what Apple earned.

Most of the profit came from interest paid on the securities the Fed acquired in the financial crisis and subsequent recovery.

KingCast Presents Nashua PD Blue.... and Black: The Arrest, Beating and OC Spraying of Jeffrey Riel and Another.

Jeffrey Riel consults with lawyer Paul Borchard at today's arraignment.

On or about 2 May Jeffrey Riel was walking along the railroad tracks as dozens of people do in Nashua every night when the police stopped him for allegedly suspicious activity as others walked around him at the same time. It turns out there was some sort of probation violation from Virginia, but those close to him say he may have been unaware because the DMV and other LE were not even aware. We will see how that unfolds. The following is a verbatim excerpt from my phone conversation with a witness to the beatings of Jeffrey Riel and Another who was present.

Paracord for Function and Fashion

Gaye Levy, Contributor
Activist Post

I first fell in love with Paracord while configuring my survival gear kit. At the time, I was familiar with ropes and lines used by mariners since, after all, I boated in Puget Sound for over twenty years. I can not tell you how many times that I would be out at some remote anchorage in need of one more line to secure this or that to the side of our vessel. And then there were the other little emergencies. A broken shoelace, a forgotten belt, a strap that shredded . . . the things that can go awry while out there in nature are endless.

Bringing us forward to current times, in addition to hiking, boating, camping, bike riding and other outdoor pursuits, we have basic survival skills to think about and plan for. After all, if the SHTF in a big way, without the proper gear we may all be up a creek without a paddle so to speak.

Enter the miracle of paracord. This is very useful stuff that is also very inexpensive...

Modern Swine Flu Scare is the Second Attempt to Vaccinate Every American

Susanne Posel, Contributor

In 1976 there was a nationwide panic over a suspicious strain of flu. It prompted a mass vaccination within the US. It was the swine flu outbreak.

A curious strain of H5N1 appeared out of nowhere. During January 19th to February 9th was the only time period when infections were detected. Only one death and 13 were hospitalized from the new strain in H5N1.

Yet, because of the mass vaccinations, 500 cases of Guilian–Barre syndrome (GBS) spread throughout the population causing 25 deaths...

Engaging in experimental trials to classify specific compounds to be utilized for unintended purposes is highly dangerous.

FLASHBACK: World Trade Center Scrap Lands in India

It might seem like a tangent to the tragedy of the Sept 11th attacks: the fate of the thousands of tons of steel that formed the twin towers. As with so many other unwanted materials from the US, more than 30,000 tons of steel scrap — possibly contaminated with asbestos, PCBs, cadmium, mercury and dioxins — has been exported to India and other parts of Asia. Though the risks from the scrap are probably not on the order of the health threats at Ground Zero, the U.S. nevertheless has the obligation to ensure that toxic contamination from the World Trade Center is not exported to other nations.

Cardiologist Speaks Out Against Current Cholesterol Guidelines

Most medical professionals strongly believe that cholesterol causes heart disease and that treating ‘raised’ cholesterol and bringing it down to a so-called ‘healthy’ level is beneficial for us all. However, I’ve been skeptical about both these ideas for many years now.
I’m not the only one, though, as quite a few individuals have expressed similar doubts about the ‘cholesterol hypothesis’. Because the cholesterol hypothesis is so firmly entrenched in so many people’s minds, and because dissenters are often from the fringes of (or outside) mainstream medicine, any skepticism is relatively easy to dismiss. I think. However, when someone from within the establishment expresses doubts, the impact can be that much greater.

GM Enviro-Pig Won't Go To Market; On To Humanely Solving an Environmental Problem

Heather Callaghan
Activist Post

Last year, the media was buzzing about the possibility of Enviro-pig entering the American and Canadian food markets.

The way our regulatory agencies work is to keep pending approvals for genetically modified animals on file, in secret, until a decision determines if it's suddenly in the stores unlabeled, or no, not yet.

Enviro-pig is a creation from Canada's University of Guelph scientists and hog industry Ontario Pork. Birthed in 1999, with 10 generations since. The DNA of Yorkshire pigs were spliced with DNA from e.coli for phosphorous digestion and mice DNA to promote the e.coli gene. The pigs' make-up was changed to allow the enzyme phytase in their saliva to cut the phosphorous in their manure by about 30 percent.

Even worse than SOPA: New CISPA cybersecurity bill will censor the Web

H.R. 3523, a piece of legislation dubbed the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (or CISPA for short), has been created under the guise of being a necessary implement in America’s war against cyberattacks. But the vague verbiage contained within the pages of the paper could allow Congress to circumvent existing exemptions to online privacy laws and essentially monitor, censor and stop any online communication that it considers disruptive to the government or private parties. Critics have already come after CISPA for the capabilities that it will give to seemingly any federal entity that claims it is threatened by online interactions, but unlike the Stop Online Privacy Act and the Protect IP Acts that were discarded on the Capitol Building floor after incredibly successful online campaigns to crush them, widespread recognition of what the latest would-be law will do has yet to surface to the same degree.

European Commission Blames Social Networks For ACTA Failure; Worried About Its Imminent Directive On Copyright Enforcement

He noted that opposition had increased in the run-up to January’s planned vote in the US Congress on two legislative initiatives -- the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) -- aimed at increasing the protection of intellectual property rights on the Internet; in the end the vote had not been held, following a hostile campaign by social networks and the loss of White House support.
It's interesting to see De Gucht linking the growing hostility to ACTA with the storm generated by SOPA/PIPA, and giving the credit for stopping those US bills to a "hostile campaign" waged by social networks. You can tell this really worries him, because he says something similar about social networks and ACTA immediately afterwards:

Lindsey Graham: Consumer Protection Bureau 'Is Something Out Of The Stalinist Era'

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said on Sunday that an agency established to protect consumers from financial fraud "is something out of the Stalinist era."

Graham, speaking on NBC's "Meet The Press," was asked why Senate Republicans had filibustered President Obama's nominee to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which was created as part of 2010's Wall Street reform.

"There's no oversight under this person. He gets a check from the Federal Reserve. We want him under the Congress so we can oversee the overseer," Graham said.

On "Fox News Sunday," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) explained the filibuster by saying that his party opposed a "czar" with unlimited authority.

Yeah, this one hit me today as well. Ready to switch to Android.

Just got back from AT&T. After reminding me that this is all Apple's fault (really, didn't AT&T CHOOSE to sell and support iPhone?) the store manager admitted that IOS 5 has a lot of problems, but was pushed onto the market to catch the Christmas rush and because of the push into Cloud technology.

IOS 5 can't connect to WPA/WPA2 Enterprise Wireless Network

Webmaster's Commentary:

Here is the thing.

Over the last week I missed two radio interviews because my iPhone wasn't reminding me like it used to do before IOS 5. Apparently the upgrade to IOS 5 convinced iTunes there was a second calendar inside my Outlook, and since then iTunes has been re-syncing to the wrong calendar. According to Apples's own websites, this is a known problem, and there is no fix for it., So in desperation I reset the iPhone to factory settings, then did a restore only to have the iTunes tell me the restore from backup failed. Again, this is a known problem, and again there is no fix. So I am literally recreating my iPhone account from scratch, having to re-enter all my email information, etc. and now I cannot connect to my WiFi hotspot, again a known problem and again, no solution.

Frankly, I am fed up with Apple's propagandists always writing into WRH to say the correct fix for all the virus problems is to buy a MAC. However good Apple's products and service use3d to be, their fancy clean white store-fronts conceals a black and rotted internal system.

So, as I try to restore my iPhone to something that will help my life (instead of taking up my one day off to deal with problems; this was the day I was supposed to try to fix that @#%ing KIA) from now on as a I get reports of problems with Apple products and services I will feature them here in WRH.

We The People have to start shunning every and all companies that sell us crap and refuse to fix the problems. I am ready to go back to a dumb phone if I cannot rely on this rotted apple I am holding.

The US Justice Department Hacked My Twitter Account

Many of us who use the internet - be it to write emails, work or browse its growing landscape: mining for information, connecting with others or using it to organise ourselves in various groups of the like-minded - are not aware of that our behavior online is being monitored. Profiling has become a default with companies such as Google and Facebook. These companies have huge databases recording our every move within their environment, in order to groom advertising to our interests. For them, we are only consumers to push goods at, in order to sell ads through an increasingly sophisticated business model. For them, we are not regarded as citizens with civic rights.

This notion needs to change.

Myths and Facts: Study Verifies That There Is No Value In Any Flu Vaccine - Five Busted Myths about Vaccines

A remarkable study published in the Cochrane Libary found no evidence of benefit for influenza vaccinations and also noted that the vast majority of trials were inadequate.

The authors stated that the only ones showing benefit were industry-funded. They also pointed out that the industry-funded studies were more likely to be published in the most prestigious journals...and one more thing: They found cases of severe harm caused by the vaccines, in spite of inadequate reporting of adverse effects.

The study, "Vaccines for preventing influenza in healthy adults", is damning of the entire pharmaceutical industry and its minions, the drug testing industry and the medical system that relies on them.

The authors found that vaccines administered parenterally, that is, outside the digestive tract, usually meaning by injection. reduced influenza-like symptoms by 4%. They found no evidence that vaccination prevents viral transmission! (There goes the whole herd immunity argument!) They also found no evidence that they prevent complications, either.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus is pushing all members of America's armed service to buy and eat as much seafood as possible.

This is as sinister as it gets! BP has destroyed the gulf and is now working with the U.S. military to get it in the homes of American troops (already poisoned by continued exposure to depleted uranium) throughout the country! Multiple scientists have declared gulf seafood toxic and for good reason. Over 2 million gallons of toxic dispersant has been sprayed in and around the gulf. The facts are so heavily documented that there is no logical way that any literate human being not pushing an agenda could believe otherwise.

To top it off, Ewell Smith, executive director of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, is pushing for this toxic cocktail to be served in in school lunch programs nationwide!

“He expressed what we wanted to hear; he is in favor of the federal government buying seafood from the Gulf,” said Smith, who said he would like to see Gulf seafood as the choice throughout the public domain, “whether it’s the military or prison systems or school systems.”

S 510 Food Safety bill is still alive and may unleash a new army of FDA agents

(NaturalNews) The U.S. government wants to know where your greenhouse is. Under Senate Bill 510 -- which is now back in the hands of the U.S. Senate after the House hid an amendment in an appropriations bill and passed it last night -- American food producers would be required to register their facilities with the U.S. government. The feds, it seems, want a database of food growers so they know who to target for surprise inspections (show me your papers!).

"The registration shall contain an assurance that the Secretary will be permitted to inspect such facility at the times and in the manner permitted by this Act."

What this language shows is that the point of registration is so that government agents can conduct surprise inspections of food facilities. At least 4,000 new FDA agents will need to be hired if this bill becomes law, greatly expanding the FDA's agent presence in much the same way the TSA expanded over the last few years.

So essentially what we have here is a food tyranny bill that would hand a group of un-elected bureaucrats who answer to no one the power to control virtually the entire U.S. food supply.

Remember $4 gasoline? Oil speculators are back

WASHINGTON — Despite weak demand in the U.S. and Europe, oil prices climbed this week to near $90 a barrel and gasoline prices have passed $3 a gallon on the West Coast and parts of the Northeast.

Why? If demand is down and supplies are plentiful — and they are — why would prices be going up?

---Comment---

Oil speculation might be one aspect that is causing oil prices to climb, but there are other factors to consider as well. Refinery slow down, very harsh winter season, and dollar devaluation by the Federal Reserve Bank, would be prime causes of gasoline price increases. - kdtroxel

LONDON – The website attacks launched by supporters of WikiLeaks show 21st-century cyber warfare evolving into a more amateur and anarchic affair than many predicted.

While most countries have plowed much more attention and resources into cyber security in recent years, most of the debate has focused on the threat from militant groups such as al Qaeda or mainstream state on state conflict.

AMERICA: Y UR PEEPS B SO DUM?

Ignorance and courage in the age of Lady Gaga

If you hang out much with thinking people, conversation eventually turns to the serious political and cultural questions of our times. Such as: How can the Americans remain so consistently brain-fucked? Much of the world, including plenty of Americans, asks that question as they watch U.S. culture go down like a thrashing mastodon giving itself up to some Pleistocene tar pit.

NGO Monitor’s attack on The Electronic Intifada is part of a well-financed, Israeli-government endorsed effort to silence reporting about and criticism of Israel by attacking so-called “delegitimizers” — those who speak about well-documented human rights abuses, support boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS), or promote full equality for Palestinians.

Assange Prosecution: A Brazen Effort to Kill Alternative Media

Now that Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is in custody, we can expect the U.S. government to request his extradition and prosecute the Australian for espionage. “Any such proceedings would set up a test of whether the First Amendment’s protection for a free press extends to a website with a worldwide audience,” notes McClatchy today.

In 1917 the United States enacted the Espionage Act, a law that has made it a crime to “willfully communicate” secret government information that could expose national secrets held by officialdom. Since the law was passed, however, the government has avoided prosecuting journalists for publishing classified information.

The "Hi Tech" Corporate Police State: "Reengineering" the Internet ... for Persistent Surveillance

The secret world of "cyber situational awareness" is a spymaster's wet dream, made all the more alluring by the advent of ultra high speed computing and the near infinite storage capacity afforded by massive server farms and the ubiquitous "cloud."

Lost in the debate surrounding privacy invasion and data mining however, is the key role that internet service providers (ISPs) play as intermediaries and gatekeepers. From their perch, ISPs peer deeply into and collect and analyze the online communications of tens of millions of users simultaneously, in real-time.

Concerted efforts to eliminate online anonymity, in managed democracies and authoritarian regimes alike, are greatly enhanced by the deployment of deep packet inspection (DPI) sensors and software on virtually all networks.

"To unpack this a little" they aver, "all data traffic that courses across the 'net is contained in individual packets that have header (i.e. addressing) information and payload (i.e. content) information. We can think of this as the address on a postcard and the written and visual content of a postcard."

All of which is there for the taking, "criminal evidence, ready for use in a trial," Cryptohippie chillingly informs.

Also, it can take a higher temperature to melt the composition so there's expense there.”

Marijuana Cuts Tumor Growth by 50%

The active ingredient in marijuana cuts tumor growth in common lung cancer in half and significantly reduces the ability of the cancer to spread, say researchers at Harvard University who tested the chemical in both lab and mouse studies.

They say this is the first set of experiments to show that the compound, Delta-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), inhibits EGF-induced growth and migration in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expressing non-small cell lung cancer cell lines. Lung cancers that over-express EGFR are usually highly aggressive and resistant to chemotherapy.

THC that targets cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 is similar in function to endocannabinoids, which are cannabinoids that are naturally produced in the body and activate these receptors. The researchers suggest that THC or other designer agents that activate these receptors might be used in a targeted fashion to treat lung cancer.

Cap-and-Trade Market Spanning North America Weighed by States

California, New Mexico and 10 U.S. Northeastern states may try to create a North American carbon market on their own now that President Barack Obama has given up on cap-and-trade legislation that stalled in Congress.

The emissions-trading system would be based on a planned carbon market in California, the most populous state, and an existing regional cap-and-trade program for power plants in the Northeast, according to state environmental officials. Three Canadian provinces have also shown interest in a cross-border carbon-trading system, the officials said.

“The key is to have as large and as liquid a market as possible,” John Yap, British Columbia’s climate-change minister, said in a telephone interview. Under cap-and-trade, the government creates a market for pollution rights by issuing a limited number of carbon-dioxide permits, which companies can buy and sell.

Of the six states in the Midwestern Greenhouse Gas Reduction Accord -- Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin -- Democrats lost the governor’s race or control of the legislature to Republicans in five, according to data from the National Conference of State Legislatures. Many Republicans in national and state politics have opposed cap-and- trade, which they say is an energy tax in disguise.
