Hornby set for shares windfall worth £2m in HBoS takeover

HALIFAX Bank of Scotland boss Andy Hornby is set for a share windfall worth £2 million following the takeover by Lloyds TSB.
News of Mr Hornby's share windfall comes at a time when staff at both HBoS and Lloyds TSB prepare for a raft of job losses as part of the new group's £1 billion a year cost savings.

The Edinburgh-based bank's chief executive is set to get 830,000 new shares in the new company if the deal announced yesterday goes through.

Foreclosures prompt plunge in Calif. home prices

Home sales in California surged in August as a flood of foreclosures tugged down prices.

Figures released Thursday by MDA DataQuick showed 37,988 new and preowned homes were sold statewide last month, up 13.6 percent from August 2007 but down 3.8 percent from July.

The firm said 46.9 percent of all homes sold last month were foreclosed properties.

That helped send the statewide median home price plunging 35.3 percent to $301,000 during the year ended in August.

America and China Joined at the Hip

By DAVE LINDORFF

18/9/08 "Counterpunch" -- - With the government now having spent over $800 billion in less than a year shoring up tottering financial companies that had become little more than casinos (and rigged ones at that), America is looking increasingly like China, a country where the state has been gradually getting out of the business of directly owning companies.

In hard times, tent cities rise across the country

Since foreclosure mess, homeless advocates report rise in encampments

Thurs., Sept. 18, 2008
RENO, Nev. - A few tents cropped up hard by the railroad tracks, pitched by men left with nowhere to go once the emergency winter shelter closed for the summer.

Then others appeared — people who had lost their jobs to the ailing economy, or newcomers who had moved to Reno for work and discovered no one was hiring.

Water Flowed on Mars Longer than Thought

Parts of ancient Mars may have been wet for a billion years longer than scientists previously thought, a new study of images of the red planet's surface suggests.

Along with Earth and the other inner planets of our solar system, Mars formed about 4.5 billion years ago. Scientists have long known that flowing water formed many of the features seen on Mars today, but previous studies suggested that water runoff from precipitation had ceased after the first billion years of Mars' history, called the Noachian Epoch.

Palin's transparency proposal already exists in D.C.

Sarah Palin likes to tell voters around the country about how she “put the government checkbook online” in Alaska. On Thursday, Palin suggested she would take that same proposal to Washington.

“We’re going to do a few new things also,” she said at a rally in Cedar Rapids. “For instance, as Alaska’s governor, I put the government’s checkbook online so that people can see where their money’s going. We’ll bring that kind of transparency, that responsibility, and accountability back. We’re going to bring that back to D.C.”

DuPage election panel doesn't answer concerns on machines

A month ago, when I asked the DuPage County Election Commission to tell us how it is dealing with the known dangers of electronic voting, the number of letters I received from Naperville Sun readers was overwhelming.

A lot of them suggested that, if the commission failed to respond, I should ask them again. The local commissioners have not responded, so I am asking again.

Sarah, stop the slander

I honestly am just so frustrated with what Gov. Palin has been doing and saying, I cannot write what I was going to write. What she is attempting to do with Walt Monegan - shift the blame and public disgust to him, rather than be "open" and "welcome the investigation" as she has repeatedly promised in the past - is just beyond digust to me.

Why the Poker Game is Ending

George Washington’s Blog
Thursday, Sept 18, 2008

In his book “Secrets of the Temple: How the Federal Reserve Runs the Country”, leading journalist William Greider said that the economy is like a poker game. He said that it is human nature to want to get all of the chips, but noted that - if one person does get all of the chips - the game ends.

In other words, the game of capitalism only continues as long as everyone has some money to play with. If the government and corporations take everyone’s money, the game ends.

Barry Jennings, key withness to wtc 7 explosions, dead at 53

"'I’m just confused about one thing, and one thing only– why World Trade Center 7 went down in the first place. I’m very confused about that. I know what I heard– I heard explosions. The explanation I got was it was the fuel-oil tank. I’m an old boiler guy– if it was a fuel-oil tank, it would have been one side of the building...'

That interview was not released until June 2008 at the request of Mr. Jennings, who had received numerous threats to his job and asked that it be left out of Loose Change: Final Cut because of those threats.

Motorists fume at 'profiteers' as price of petrol goes UP despite huge falls in oil price

Petrol prices are increasing despite huge falls in the cost of oil in recent months.

In the past few days prices at some petrol stations have increased by 2p a litre - or nearly 10p a gallon - adding £1 to the average fill-up.

It comes at a time when wholesale oil prices have dropped by nearly 40 per cent since July and the wholesale cost of the petrol and diesel is down 30 per cent.

Motoring groups accused the oil giants of profiteering at drivers' expense.

The AA called the price rises 'unbelievable, unjustifiable and totally outrageous'.

9/11 and the "American Inquisition"

The objective is to sustain the illusion that "America is under attack" by Al Qaeda. Under the American inquisition, Washington has a self-proclaimed holy mandate to extirpate Islamic fundamentalism and "spread democracy" throughout the world.

"Going after Bin Laden" is part of a consensus. Fear and insecurity prevail over common sense. Despite the evidence, the White House, the State Department, the two Party system, cannot, in the minds of Americans, be held responsible for a criminal act (9/11/) resulting in the deaths of American civilians.

The Financial Elite Can't Bailout Everyone

Remember, all of this has happened by design. It is ridiculous that Alan Greenspan whose policies as Federal Reserve chairman earlier this decade caused the reckless lending which lead to the housing crisis is able to go on national television and critique the problems that are happening now as a result of the policies he approved. The Great Depression served as a mechanism for the elite to consolidate wealth, and now they are seeking to do it on a larger scale with everything that’s happening now.

We are slaves

We are slaves. Accept it. Raio frequencies, microprocessors, and circuits run your life. You think you have control. It's an illusion of control. The system tells you when you can pay a bill, watch a video on youtube, or talk to your lover. With the flick of a switch it can be shut off. You can be shut off. No bank. No net. No phone. Nothing. It's all ran from outside your surroundings, by people BIGGER and A LOT MORE IMPORTANT than you. At least, that is how they see it.
