9/11: A Wilderness of Mirrors and the Prince of Darkness

On September 11, 2001 we Americans witnessed the calculated use of terror to traumatize our nation in order to impose a neoconservative political agenda that has been a disaster for the whole world, especially the Mideast. In 2016, all of this is clear, or should be with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight. But any Americans who read the neoconservative policy papers in the 1990s, understood the extreme ideas that were being expressed, saw the future, and tried to warn the rest of us about what was coming, were no doubt either dismissed as kooks or smeared as anti-semitic.

RUSSIAN PM WARNS US, SAUDIS AGAINST STARTING ‘PERMANENT WAR’ WITH GROUND INTERVENTION IN SYRIA

Russian PM Dmitry Medvedev told German media that sending foreign troops into Syria could unleash “yet another war on Earth.” The warning follows increasingly aggressive statements made by Saudi Arabia and Turkey amid Bashar Assad’s gains in Aleppo.

“All sides must be compelled to sit at the negotiating table, instead of unleashing yet another war on Earth,” Medvedev told Germany’s Handelsblatt newspaper. “Any kinds of land operations, as a rule, lead to a permanent war. Look at what’s happened in Afghanistan and a number of other countries. I am not even going to bring up poor Libya.”

The PM was commenting on recent statements from Saudi Arabia claiming that it was ready to send ground troops to Syria, should Washington lead the way.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The cease-fire which has been announced is both fragile, and tenuous enough to be broken at any second, particularly by those with a vested interest in regime change in Syria.

Russia has played this perfectly, and appears definitely to be the adult at the table in these negotiations.

The "wild cards" right now are Turkey, various rebel groups, Saudi Arabia, and Israel. I hope the leadership in these countries will cool their jets, let the cease-fire take place, and let a political settlement in Syria play out, if this is at all humanly possible right now.

Because a war with Russia over the future of Syria is a really, really bad idea; and particularly so for the US government and military, because they do not have the troop strength, the manufacturing, the weaponry, or the money to insure a positive outcome to a conventional war against Russia.

Iran Completes Eurasian Golden Triangle

Sometimes profound tectonic shifts in the global politics arise from least noticed events. Such is the situation with Iran and the recent visit to Teheran of China’s President Xi Jinping. What emerged from the talks confirms that the vital third leg of what will become a genuine Eurasian Golden Triangle, of nations committed to peaceful economic development, is now in place.

Washington Again Underestimated the Iranian Mind

Washington foreign policies these days are dominated by a bizarre kind of political sado-masochism, not unlike the argument given by the CIA that torture such as waterboarding is a successful, legitimate way to extract invaluable intelligence from an enemy combatant. Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo come to mind. The war-makers like CIA head honcho John Brennan or Victoria Nuland at the State Department, or neocon Ash (as in ashes of war) Carter at the Pentagon seem to be convinced that to be a great nation, first you must be “hard cop,” beat the daylights out of your target person or nation. You sanction them to the point of breaking economically. Then you flip sides and go “soft cop.” Their silly CIA and military torture handbooks tell them this works every time. Only problem, it doesn’t. This is definitely true with several nations today who resist the bully hard cop-soft cop games of Washington. What Iran is doing in terms of pricing its oil export sales is an example.

AN EXASPERATED JOHN KERRY THROWS IN TOWEL ON SYRIA: “WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO, GO TO WAR WITH THE RUSSIANS?!”

“Russian and Syrian forces intensified their campaign on rebel-held areas around Aleppo that are still home to around 350,000 people and aid workers have said the city – Syria’s largest before the war – could soon fall.”
Can you spot what’s wrong with that quote, from a Reuters piece out today? Here’s the problem: “could soon fall” implies that Aleppo is on the verge of succumbing to enemy forces. It’s not. It’s already in enemy hands and has been for quite some time. What Reuters should have said is this: “…could soon be liberated.”

While we’ll be the first to admit that Bashar al-Assad isn’t exactly the most benevolent leader in the history of statecraft, you can bet most Syrians wish this war had never started and if you were to ask those stranded in Aleppo what their quality of life is like now, versus what it was like in 2009, we’re fairly certain you’ll discover that residents aren’t particularly enamored with life under the mishmash of rebels that now control the city.

Webmaster's Commentary:

IF Turkey decides to invade Syria in the short term, and Russia responds militarily, Turkey could invoke Article 5 of the NATO Charter (which states that if one NATO member is attacked, it is as though all are attacked, and all must unite against the attacker). That would definitely force the US's hand, militarily.

I would like to hope and pray that the leadership in Riyadh, Ankara, and Doha understands that when Russian government officials say, if you invade Syria, this will will be an act of war against Russia as well, that they completely understand that in this circumstance, Russia is not bluffing.

US Must Act More Aggressively Against Daesh in Libya - Jeb Bush

Watch your head climbing into that transport aircraft, and we will call whoever it is you want to invade and tell them you are on your way to kick their butts all by yourself.

But we remember the lies about stolen incubators that tricked us into the first invasion of Iraq.

We remember your older brother's whopper about Saddam's nuclear weapons that tricked us into the second invasion of Iraq.

We remember how only a year ago Obama and Kerry tried to trick us into war with Syria with more lies about poison gas.

We remember how there weren't really torpedoes in the Gulf of Tonkin or a Spanish mine in Havana Harbor, but how there really WERE weapons on board the Lusitania.

In short, we remember all the lies, frauds, and deceptions used to trick us into wars of conquest, to send our young people out to die in wars created out of thin air by and for the money-junkies. I think it is time that we have a new rule in America; that those who want war are the first to the front lines. You are all splendidly brave with the lives of other peoples' children. Clearly it is not in the interest of the anti-Assad axis to eliminate ISIS. The United States and France are keen to make a show of airstrikes and special forces, but what they really want is the ability to operate in Syria militarily. This is the only way they'll have any chance of influencing the outcome.

US Hawks Ignore Top Israeli Official on Iran

Last week, Israel’s top military official made some staggering comments during the course of a security conference in Tel Aviv. Here’s how The Forward‘s JJ Goldberg reported the comments of Lieutenant General Gadi Eisenkot, Israel’s chief of staff, which seem as of yet to be unavailable in a full English translation from the original Hebrew:

Eisenkot said there were two “existential threats” to Israel, and both are currently “declining.” One was the threat of nonconventional weaponry, including both Iran’s nuclear program and Syrian chemical weapons…
First, he said Israel faces no existential threats right now, because Obama’s Iran nuclear deal has removed the greatest threat to Israel’s existence…
As for the Iranian nuclear agreement, he said it is “a strategic turning point” that includes “many risks but also opportunities.”

Trouble Brewing in Syria: Is US-Led Coalition Preparing for Advance?

US Vice President Joe Biden's recent visit to Turkey indicates that Washington is not inclined to pressure Ankara into halting its anti-Kurdish crackdown nor its military deployments near the rich Iraqi oilfields of Mosul, F. William Engdahl notes.

On January 24 US Vice President Joseph Biden held intensive meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

F. William Engdahl, American-German researcher, historian and strategic risk consultant, believes that the Obama administration manipulates both the ambitious Turkish President Erdogan and the impulsive Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, indulging their militarism and greed.

"The Washington game seems to be to give the Saudi-Turkish duo enough rope to hang themselves in a mad power grab of Syrian and Iraqi oil riches and perhaps, if they are really mad enough, of Iran's oilfields too," the researcher remarks in his article for New Eastern Outlook.

Webmaster's Commentary:

IF this report and analysis are true (and I have a great deal of respect for the work of Bill Engdahl), heaven help this planet.

There is going to be a point past which Russia cannot NOT respond militarily in Syria, and it almost appears that Turkey and Saudi Arabia have been tasked with "playing picador" here in a proxy war against Russia.

Turkey, a NATO member, may well be goaded by the US and NATO into making some kind of military aggression against Russia, then will invoke Article 5 of the NATO AGREEMENT, which states:

Highlights Collective defence means that an attack against one Ally is considered as an attack against all Allies. The principle of collective defence is enshrined in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty. NATO invoked Article 5 for the first time in its history after the 9/11 terrorist attacks against the United States. NATO has taken collective defence measures on several occasions, for instance in response to the situation in Syria and in the wake of the Ukraine crisis. NATO has standing forces on active duty that contribute to the Alliance’s collective defence efforts on a permanent basis. This principle is enshrined in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which states that an attack on one Ally shall be considered an attack on all Allies.

There is only two minor problems with declaring war against Russia, somewhat akin to twin 6,000 lb gorillas, snoozing on the Boesendorfer; neither the US, nor NATO, have the troop strength, the money, or the manufacturing to insure a positive outcome to a conventional war against Russia.

The second problem is that of the difference in the ethics, and performance, of weapons manufacturers, between Russia, the US, and the West.

When weapons developers in Russia deliver, their products work as advertised, and then some, upon first deployment.

With Western (and particularly US) weapons manufacturers, products are delivered late, flawed, and hopelessly over budget. If you want a glaring example of this, just look at what has happened to the US's F-35.

Iran: Lifting Sanctions and Coming Betrayal

By Tony Cartalucci

US policymakers have long conspired to broker what would be meant to appear as a historic deal with the political order in Tehran. It would be a deal almost unreasonably compromising for the United States, in order to enhance the illusion that the West sought every means to integrate Iran peacefully back into the “international community” before resorting to armed and direct military aggression.

Knowing that Iran will never exist within Washington, Wall Street, London, and Brussels’ “international order” as an obedient client state, a prescription for regime change in Tehran has long been formulated...

US Secretary of State John Kerry has once again accused Iran of moving towards producing nuclear weapons before Tehran reached a nuclear deal with P5+1 group of countries.

Kerry said on Thursday because of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), all pathways for Iran to make nuclear bombs are blocked.

"Iran was hurtling towards an unaccounted for, uninspected, full-fledged nuclear program with high levels of enrichment where they had enough enriched material to make 10 to 12 bombs," Kerry told CNBC's "Squawk Box" at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The Iranians had no sooner learned that nuclear sanctions had been removed following the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA) announcement that they had verified Iran’s compliance with all of their obligations under the P5+1 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement than they learned that new sanctions had been imposed.

Iran and the Diplomatic Jackpot

In 1748, as part of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, France regained Cape Breton from Great Britain. The island, off the coast of Nova Scotia, had passed back and forth between the two countries over the years, and previous treaties had been as binding as toilet paper. But as part of the 1748 treaty, Great Britain sent several British peers to Paris as a guarantee of the British king’s good faith in the latest agreement.

Every false flag in the making is detected ahead of time by somebody’s intelligence services

Every false flag in the making is detected ahead of time by somebody’s intelligence services—usually more than one country—because spying today is so effective and so universal. Officials in possession of this secret information often pass it on to the country that’s targeted, in the sincere belief that a heads-up will be appreciated.

But often the information isn’t welcomed—-because the fix is already in. Treasonous assets within the targeted country’s chain of command, who are prepared for the possibility of a leak, take measures to block the information from reaching those who might act on it in a meaningful way.

Netanyahu Hated The Iran Deal. Now He's Taking Credit For It.

Back in September 2015, two months after the historic Iranian nuclear deal was finally struck, Jeffrey Goldberg wrote in The Atlantic that the international agreement to restrain Iran’s nuclear program “should count as the crowning diplomatic achievement of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.“ Counter-intuitive, yes – but also prescient.

Recognizing that “Netanyahu, of course, doesn’t see this agreement as a victory for Israel; he sees it as a victory for evil,” Goldberg sought to “highlight a public path Netanyahu could have chosen.“ As Goldberg suggested, instead of slamming the agreement in addresses to the US Congress and the UN, Netanyahu could hold up the deal as “the first time Iran has agreed to radically curtail its previously unregulated nuclear activities” – and claim that would not have happened without sustained pressure from Israel.

Perhaps Bibi, as he’s known, was reading.

Is Washington Hiding the Truth Behind US Navy Incident in Iran?

On Thursday, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said that the sailors "obviously had misnavigated." At the same time, mechanical failure was ruled out as a reason for the incident. This means that the boats were not in distress when they sailed near Farsi Island, which houses a naval base of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards Corps. This also means that Iran was within its right when it detained the soldiers.

The Pentagon initially claimed mechanical problems, but after the boats were returned changed its story to claim the sailors had no idea they were in Iranian waters. Today, however, Iran revealed that the GPS devices on the two US boats were in perfect working order at the time, and they had no reason not to know they were in Iranian waters.

Israel vs Iran: Israel Loses, *Big* Time

First, there has never been any real evidence of an Iranian military nuclear program, but even more important is the fact that Iran never had any need for nuclear weapons. A lot of anti-Iranian propaganda is directly predicated on the notion that having nuclear weapons is highly desirable, yields some big advantage, and that all nations would want to acquire them. This is utter nonsense. In reality, possessing a few nuclear devices would only turn these devices into high priority targets for destruction by the USA and/or Israel. And even if, by some miracle, the Iranians managed to hide these devices while deploying them on missiles or aircraft, using any one such device would guarantee a massive retaliation from the Empire. What is the point of having a few nukes when Israel has hundreds?

Heading for Catastrophe? What May Force Riyadh to Unleash War Against Iran

Will Saudi Arabia seek war with Iran? Growing economic and political pressure may prompt the impulsive royal family to unleash a war against its longstanding Shiite rival, American author Daniel Lazare believes.

Saudi-Iranian tensions continue to escalate; although Riyadh keeps asserting the international community that it has no intention to push Saudi Arabia to the brink of war, there are certain preconditions for a full-scale conflict, according to author Daniel Lazare.

"The ruling family is under unprecedented strain. Its economy is shrinking; it's bogged down in a seemingly endless war in Yemen; and its human-rights policies are an international scandal. If countries could have nervous breakdowns, Saudi Arabia would be well on its way. And when breakdowns occur, nations do crazy things," Lazare writes in his piece for Consortiumnews.com.

Webmaster's Commentary:

the Iranian leadership has handled itself with calm and class, leading to a successful negotiation of the P5+1 Agreement, and sanctions against the country will end in a matter of days.

My nightmare scenario is that, in its geopolitical and financial distress, Saudi Arabia will create a false flag action to be blamed against Iran, invoking US (and covert Israeli) support for it against Iran, with Russian military supporting Iran, and a full-scale, world war ensues.

I would like to hope that some adults in the room of global politics (Calling President Vladimir Putin, white courtesy telephone please!)will prevent this from happening.

And the hell of it is, the US government is frantically seeking to engage in a war, ANY WAR, to misdirect the coming boiling public outrage about the deteriorating economic situation on to a false villain.

U.S. Radically Changes Its Story of the Boats in Iranian Waters: to an Even More Suspicious Version

Lake quoted John McCain as saying that “boats do not lose their sovereign immune status when they are in distress at sea.” The night the news broke, Reuters quickly said the “boats may have inadvertently drifted into Iranian waters” and “another U.S. official said mechanical issues may have disabled one of the boats, leading to a situation in which both ships drifted inadvertently into Iranian waters.”

The U.S. government itself now says this story was false. There was no engine failure, and the boats were never “in distress.” Once the sailors were released, AP reported, “In Washington, a defense official said the Navy has ruled out engine or propulsion failure as the reason the boats entered Iranian waters.”

McCain slams Obama's 'desperation' on Iran

John McCain railed against the Obama administration late on Wednesday night for what he called a desperate attempt not to offend Iranians following the seizure of two U.S. Navy vessels and apprehension of 10 sailors.

“This is desperation not to offend the Iranians because the Iranian deal has to be kept intact,” the Arizona senator said on Fox News’ “The O’Reilly Factor.” “It’s now made the United States of America be the subject of absolute humiliation.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

John McCain is desperate to kill the Iran deal on behalf of his true masters in Israel, and ignores the fact that the US violated Iran's borders, and that Iran treated the US prisoners far better than the US treated prisoners at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo.

Neocons Stamping Their Little Feet : Sen. McCain Furious Iran Treated US Sailors Well

Their crews are not subject to detention or arrest.” Imagine the tune McCain would have been singing if a well-armed Iranian naval vessel had been spotted in US territorial waters off the coast of New York. Would he have so rigorously condemned any US interference in the actions of Iran’s sovereign naval vessels?

Saudi Arabia v. Iran as Much of a Schism as Arabs v. Israel

On January 3, Saudi Arabia announced that it had executed 47 people. Among them were prominent Shiite cleric and protester Nimr al-Nimr. As Rob Prince wrote at Focal Points, it may have been an attempt at goading Iran, ever growing in arch-enemy-hood in the eyes of Saudi Arabia, into responding and thus somehow torpedo-ing the recent nuclear deal it had signed.
