Stocks led by four wounded horsemen

A bizarre trend has emerged during these hazy, lazy days of late summer. Overall market volume is unsurprisingly wafer-thin, but a big chunk of trading has been in just four financial companies that have received a healthy dose of support from Washington in order to make it through the credit crisis.

Webmaster's Commentary:

In other words, real investors have already deserted the stock market while the big players, propped up with your tax dollars, game the numbers higher to use as a political banner for the economy!

Israeli Nuclear Weapons & Western Hypocrisy

The existence of a nuclear-armed Israel shows the hypocrisy of Western powers that continue to show their “deepening concern” about the “potential pursuit of a nuclear weapon by Iran”. At a White House press conference on 18 May 2009, US President Barack Obama expressed “deepening concern” about “the potential pursuit of a nuclear weapon by Iran.” He continued: “Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon would not only be a threat to Israel and a threat to the United States, but would be profoundly destabilizing in the international community as a whole and could set off a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.”

In his speech, Obama “forgot” to mention the Israeli nuclear arsenal, which is considered by Middle East Muslim nations as a threat.

Iran allocates $20m to expose US `rights violations`

I can not source this from American news nor foreign news, the only source of this seems to be coming out of Iran.

A majority of Iranian lawmakers have approved a bill that will fund a program intended to expose ``breaches of human rights`` in the US.

In a vote on Sunday, the parliamentarians voted by a margin of 189 to 21 to pass the bill which will allocate $20 million toward the efforts, reported the Iranian Labor News Agency.

"The Americans have repeatedly approved measures to assist Iranian opposition, especially recently [they approved] a $55-million allocation by the US Senate," said Alaeddin Boroujerdi, who head the influential Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee.

Makena Resort investors default on loan

MAKENA - Skittish lenders and real estate buyers apparently accomplished what hundreds of protesters couldn't: halt the massive Makena Resort development in South Maui.

A least for now. Everett Dowling, the Wailuku developer who spearheaded the project, said on Tuesday that he hopes to be back on board with new investors in six months.

However, on Monday, Honolulu attorneys for the resort's trustee, Wells Fargo Bank, filed a complaint in 2nd Circuit Court alleging that the partnership of Dowling Co. Inc. and Morgan Stanley Real Estate, together called Makena Land LLC, defaulted on the original $192.5 million loan to purchase the 1,800-acre Makena Resort.

What every American should be made to learn about the IG Torture Report

Initially, it should be emphasized that yet again, it is not the Congress or the establishment media which is uncovering these abuses and forcing disclosure of government misconduct. Rather, it is the ACLU (with which I consult) that, along with other human rights organizations, has had to fill the void left by those failed institutions, using their own funds to pursue litigation to compel disclosure. Without their efforts, we would know vastly less than we know now about the crimes our government committed.

Britain: One Crime Solved Per 1000 CCTV Cameras

Only one crime was solved by each 1,000 CCTV cameras in London last year, a report into the city’s surveillance network has claimed.

The internal police report found the million-plus cameras in London rarely help catch criminals.

In one month CCTV helped capture just eight out of 269 suspected robbers.

David Davis MP, the former shadow home secretary, said: “It should provoke a long overdue rethink on where the crime prevention budget is being spent.”

He added: “CCTV leads to massive expense and minimum effectiveness.

“It creates a huge intrusion on privacy, yet provides little or no improvement in security.

“The Metropolitan Police has been extraordinarily slow to act to deal with the ineffectiveness of CCTV.”

Most Americans have conveniently put these two absurd, obscene conflicts out of their minds. There’s an economy to worry about and snappy little messages to tweet. Nobody wants to think about young people getting their faces or their limbs blown off. Or the parents, loaded with antidepressants, giving their children and spouses a final hug before heading off in a haze of anxiety to their third or fourth tour in the war zones.

‘Blood Libel’ In Israeli Arab Organ Sales

“THEY PLUNDER THE ORGANS OF OUR SONS,” reads the headline in Sweden’s largest daily newspaper, The Aftonbladet, which devoted a double spread in its cultural section to the article on August 17, 2009.

The reporter, Donald Bostrom, quotes Palestinian families whom he interviewed that young men from the Gaza Strip and the West Bank had been regularly seized by the Israel Defense Forces and their dismembered bodies returned to the families with missing organs.

The IDF denies the charges, claiming that the scars on the Arab corpses were only the result of routine autopsies performed on them. But Arab parents, themselves victims of countless Israeli war crimes, claim the bodies of their sons come back without hearts and kidneys.

Key to bringing Israel on board is a promise by the US to adopt a much tougher line with Iran over its alleged nuclear weapons programme. The US, along with Britain and France, is planning to push the United Nations security council to expand sanctions to include Iran’s oil and gas industry, a move that could cripple its economy.

In return, the Israeli government will be expected to agree to a partial freeze on the construction of settlements in the Middle East. In the words of one official close to the negotiations: “The message is: Iran is an existential threat to Israel; settlements are not.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

In other words, Israel wants Iran's economy crippled, bringing more starvation and suffering to Iranians, and in exchange they will bring just a tiny bit less starvation and suffering to the Palestinians!

It is right to expose Wiesenthal

Walters’s documentary evidence on Wiesenthal’s inconsistencies and lies is impeccable. He shows how the Nazi hunter’s accounts of his wartime experiences are contradictory and implausible. He pitilessly dissects Wiesenthal’s overblown claims about the numbers he brought to justice, suggesting it was not much more than a handful.

When you read Hunting Evil, you know its author is telling the truth. And, above all — above everything — the truth matters. Iran backed in bid to protect nuclear facilities

Iran, whose nuclear facilities are under threat of possible Israeli military strikes, has enlisted the support of more than 100 nonaligned nations in its push for a ban on such attacks, documents revealed in Vienna Wednesday.

The 118-nation Nonaligned Movement backs Tehran in a letter submitted to the International Atomic Energy Agency endorsing Iran's plan to submit a resolution on the topic when IAEA nations meet next month.

While Iran says the language of any resolution will be kept general, the move is clearly directed against Israel and to a lesser extent the U.S. Both nations — Israel more overtly — have not ruled out an attack as a last resort if the international community fails to persuade Tehran to freeze its nuclear activities.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One more time ...

Iran, as a signer of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, has a legal right recognized by the United States, also a signer of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, to build nuclear power stations. The IAEA has repeatedly confirmed that Iran is not building nuclear weapons underneath their reactor.

Israel, who has NOT signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, refuses all international inspections, and is building nuclear weapons underneath their reactor at Dimona, is pushing for an attack on Iran's power station.

Israel made the same accusations against Iraq prior to bombing the power station at Osirik. Post-invasion inspections by the IAEA proved that there was no clandestine weapons lab underneath the Iraqi power station.

Israel is batting zero when it comes to knowing whether there are weapons labs underneath now-destroyed power stations.

So, the US, in supporting Israel, is in violation of a major treaty, and worse, appears to the world far too stupid to understand that Israel is probably just as wrong about Iran's power station as they were about Iraq's.

How Israel Wages Game Theory Warfare

Israeli strategists rely on game theory models to ensure the intended response to staged provocations and manipulated crises. With the use of game theory algorithms, those responses become predictable, even foreseeable—within an acceptable range of probabilities. The waging of war “by way of deception” is now a mathematical discipline.

For instance, a skilled game theorist could foresee that, in response to a 911-type mass murder, “the mark” (the U.S.) would deploy its military to avenge that attack. With phony intelligence fixed around a preset goal, a game theory algorithm could anticipate that those forces might well be redirected to invade Iraq—not to avenge 911 but to pursue the expansionist goals of Greater Israel.

The Corporate Person Without a Country: AIG Spits in America's Eye, Again

Robert Benmosche decided to take an aggressive, blame-the-US-government rant to his employees, that, in classic Alice-in-Wonderland fashion, shifted blame from AIG to America. "It's not your fault, it's theirs," he told the AIG faithful, and on the topic of the company's debt to the nation, he added, "if they want out so badly, they should never have come in in the first place."

One natural question that arises from this brand of corporate bloviation is, "why do these corporations and their executives, who have been made unimaginably wealthy thanks to America, seem so anxious to smear our country with both their rhetoric and action?" It's an especially good question to ask in the era of offshoring, outsourcing, and domestic downsizing as we approach 10% unemployment.

Afghanistan: the wasted years and lives

When British troops went into Afghanistan in 2006 it was seen by many as the “good” war, in contrast to Iraq. I was not so sure. It was not just that we did not appear to know how to achieve victory. We did not even know how we would recognise a victory.

What would winning look like? Underpinning Afghan democracy? Stabilising the Karzai regime? Providing education and healthcare to the Afghan population, both male and female? Delivering law and order? Eradicating corruption? Creating a working economy? Crushing the drug trade? Protecting Pakistan from instability? Or simply defeating the Taliban and creating a stable state?

The truth is on the day of its second “democratic” election, after yeans of pain and more than 200 British deaths, we are no closer to any of these objectives.

Might it be that a sizeable sector of our economy is completely dependent on waging off shore wars?

Central & South America are in the crosshairs of the Pentagon & America's war industry. With the economy on its knees & the Iraq war a settled loss & winding down, with Afghanistan stumbling from mess to disaster to mess, the sense that Lockheed-Martin, Raytheon, Northrop-Grumman, Boeing, GE, et. al., are drooling down the necks of war planners at the Pentagon for another war is palpable.

US deficit to soar towards $1.6tn

The US budget deficit will soar to almost $1.6 trillion (£978bn) this year, the highest on record, both the White House and Congress have warned.

Fuelled by President Obama's $787bn stimulus package and reduced tax revenues due to the recession, it compares with a $455bn deficit in 2008.

The White House says the deficit will grow further, predicting it will hit a cumulative $9tn from 2010-2019.

New Clues in the Mass Death of Bees

Any number of possible causes for CCD have been put forward, from bee viruses to parasites to environmental triggers like pesticides or even cell-phone transmissions. Despite the Department of Agriculture's allotment of $20 million a year for the next five years to study CCD, it's still a mystery — and the bees keep dying.

A new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) shows that the causes of CCD may be more varied than scientists expect. The bees may be dying not from a single toxin or disease but rather from an assault directed by a collection of pathogens.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Look how hard they work to avoid the suggestion that genetically modified crops may be the root cause of the deaths of the honeybees, yet it is already documented that pollen from genetically modified plants is harmful to benign insect species! See Transgenic pollen harms monarch larvae (Nature, Vol 399, No 6733, p 214, May 1999)

Don't Need No Trojan Horse -- when Troy is your Home

A poster on AlterNet named monkeywrench observed that Obama couldn't have handed the corporate owners of this country more if he had been a Trojan Horse candidate. So prescient was the poster that I have highjacked his chain of thought herein. Could Obama be a Trojan horse? Maybe, but it would be a waste of time and effort. Trojan hoses are not necessary in a country that has only one political party anyway – Big Business. You don't need a Trojan Horse when Troy is your home. The Republicans vs. Democrats mock combat are mere bread and circuses for the clamoring crowd. Personally, I have no problem with that. I fully understand I was born under a corpocracy. But I do wish our masters grasped the importance of free alcohol in the suspension of disbelief.

Fighting in Yemen escalates

The Shiite revolt in the northwest is unfolding amid Yemen's tricky mix of tribes and clans, and larger regional animosities between Iran's Shiite-led government and its Sunni Arab neighbors. Yemen has intimated that Iran is funneling weapons and money to the rebels. Iran's news media have alleged that Saudi forces have joined Yemeni troops in putting down the rebellion. The Saudis, who worry the unrest may seep across their border, have only publicly acknowledged that the kingdom is consulting with Yemen about the violence.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The bottom line here, is that because of Yemen's geography, whoever controls Yemen controls the flow of oil in the Gulf.

The US government is currently supporting Yemen's "president" of 30-odd years, one President Ali Abdullah Saleh. This guy has a rep of being more crooked than a dog's hind leg and neck-deep in corruption, but because of his ability to, so far, keep a grip on his impoverished citizens, he's the person the US government wants to keep in charge.

And we're funneling money to this corrupt government just as fast as the printing presses at the Fed can print to keep this man in power.

And notice another accusation against Iran of aiding the rebels here, in the statement ".....Yemen has intimated that Iran is funneling weapons and money to the rebels." This is part of a tapestry of articles I have seen today, accusing Iran of this, that, or the other.

The war drums beat more loudly and more quickly toward some kind of military strike against Iran, and people need to take notice right now. Obama has given Iran a "window" of time through the end of September to accede to his demands. We may very well be on the verge of some kind of ugly "October Surprise" when Iran refuses to do so.

Iran to keep up its cooperation with UN nuclear watchdog

ran will continue to cooperate with the UN nuclear watchdog, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday, apparently confirming Tehran had given inspectors access to a reactor under construction after barring visits for a year.

The changes were greeted with skepticism by the West, which suspects Iran is trying to build nuclear bombs. Tehran says its nuclear work is to generate electricity. Uranium enrichment can have both civilian and military uses.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unfortunately for Iran, even allowing the IAEA this access will not ultimately stop Israel, if Israel decides that the US must "neutralize" Iran.

The timetable is in place, with barely one month left for Iran to accede to Obama's demands. And the whole insanity of this situation is, Iran is perfectly within its rights to use nuclear energy peacefully, i.e., build a power plant.

I would not bet against some kind of "October Surprise", attempted by the US government to galvanize the American people against Iran in support of some kind of military strike.

The only minor problem with this scenario is, both Hu of China and Medvedev of Russia have warned Tel Aviv and Washington that such a military attack will lead to World War III.

Israel's main source of water faces dire shortage

The Water Authority wants to begin the coming winter with the Kinneret no lower than it was last year at that time. The level of the lake is currently about 45 centimeters lower than it was at this time last year, but it is unlikely it will maintain this level; the Water Authority predicts that the level will fall to 214.87 meters below sea level, lower than the "black line" below which the lake's pumps cannot operate properly.

This is one of the reasons Israel is itching for any excuse to invade Lebanon again, and this time they will go all the way to the Litani River to capture the water for itself.

Any reporter wanting to "embed" with U.S. forces is subject to the background check. The company has been paid by the Pentagon since 2005.

Behind the Carnage in Baghdad

The chaotic conditions in Iraq that triggered Shahwani's resignation are illustrated by several recent events -- each of which suggests that without the backstop of U.S. support, Iraqi authorities are now desperately vulnerable to pressure, especially from neighboring Iran.

The breakdown of order in Iraq was most dramatic in the truck bombings on Aug. 19 that targeted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other agencies, and left more than 100 dead and 500 wounded.

Webmaster's Commentary:

"Iran is responsible for every terrible thing which has happened in Iraq since the US invasion and occupation of Iraq, honest, and that's why we have to bomb their power plant!" - official white horse souse.

(Ahem). Please note that it is the US invasion and occupation of Iraq which has generated the geopolitical conditions moving Maliki (who is s Shiite Muslim) closer to the orbit of Tehran.

But this article is part of a crescendo of noise and drum-beat toward yet another US military misadventure in the Middle East. The small problem with this, however, is that Russia's Hu and China's Medvedev have warned Washington and Tel Aviv that such an attack will mean a world war. As reported in:

"A chilling report circulating in the Kremlin today states that President Medvedev and Chinese President Hu have issued an “urgent warning” to the United States that says if the Americans allow an Israeli nuclear attack upon Iran, “World War will be our response”.

"ueling Russian and Chinese fears are intelligence reports stating that Israel has moved over three-quarters of its Naval Forces through the Suez Canal and has assembled over 30 of its US-built fighter jets in Kurdistan for a planned attack using American made “bunker busting” bombs and nuclear armed cruise missiles."

War with Russia, anyone?!?!? Let's hope not. Because there is nothing either the US or Israel can "sell" to Russia to make it want to go along with this madness.

How often have we heard Israel referred to as the “only democracy in the Middle East?” More importantly, how many of those who accept that claim have actually subjected their belief to in depth scrutiny? Scrutiny like that which is found in Professor Neve Gordon’s 2004 piece in Counterpunch, or Uri Avnery’s “Don’t Forget, Israel Is a Democracy.”

Moreover, what do those who repeat this statement every chance they get make of the cases of Ilan Pappé and Tanya Reinhart, both Israeli born scholars who were vehemently ostracized by their academic colleagues and Israeli society for criticizing Israel openly? Both Reinhart and Pappé eventually left Israel after no longer being able to live amidst Israel’s racist and violent actions against all those who do not support the status quo.

Ministry of Defence's 'disastrous' decision over Chinooks

The shortage of helicopters in Afghanistan can be traced to a “disastrous” Ministry of Defence decision to try to economise by designing its own software, The Times has been told.

The MoD agreed in 1995 to buy eight Chinook Mk3s from Boeing for £259 million. The avionics software would have cost a further £40 million, but defence insiders say that the ministry wanted to fit its own software — in spite of a warning from Boeing that it might not work.

When the aircraft were delivered six years later, the ministry found that it could not design the software which meant that the helicopters could not fly in difficult conditions.

This Isn’t Reform, It’s Robbery

Capitalists, as my friend Father Michael Doyle says, should never be allowed near a health care system. They hold sick children hostage as they force parents to bankrupt themselves in the desperate scramble to pay for medical care. The sick do not have a choice. Medical care is not a consumable good. We can choose to buy a used car or a new car, shop at a boutique or a thrift store, but there is no choice between illness and health. And any debate about health care must acknowledge that the for-profit health care industry is the problem and must be destroyed. This is an industry that hires doctors and analysts to deny care to patients in order to increase profits. It is an industry that causes half of all bankruptcies.
