Copenhagen climate summit: US rules that greenhouse gases endanger human health

COPENHAGEN (AFP) - Prostitutes of a Danish sex workers association will offer their services for free to delegates of the UN climate summit in Copenhagen, an association official told AFP Saturday.

Susanne Moeller said the move was meant to protest an anti-prostitution initiative undertaken by Copenhagen city hall.

The city, host of the December 7-18 UN climate summit, distributed postcards in Copenhagen's hotels that said "Be sustainable: Don't buy sex." It also sent letters to hotel managers inviting them to take measures to avoid prostitutes meeting clients in their establishments.

The prostitutes, whose work is not illegal in Denmark, promptly reacted to the move.

Greenhouse gas carbon dioxide ramps up aspen growth

The rising level of atmospheric carbon dioxide may be fueling more than climate change. It could also be making some trees grow like crazy.

That is the finding of a new study of natural stands of quaking aspen, one of North America's most important and widespread deciduous trees. Tempers Flare In Climate Change Flap

During a live television faceoff hosted by the BBC, Marc Morano, a former communications director of the U.S. Senate Environment Committee and now an editor with the Web site Climate Depot squared off against Professor Andrew Watson of the University of East Anglia in eastern England. It didn't take long before the two got in each other's face and Watson became increasingly annoyed with Morano's loud interruptions. He finally lost it by the end when the anchor thanked the participants.

How not to measure temperature, part 92 – surrounded by science

I had an interest in tracking down the Kelburn station, just to see how good it is. I was able to find it on Google Earth as an aerial view which you can see below. I was unsuccessful in my first attempts at finding a photograph to document the measurement environment of the Kelburn station. I picked up the hunt again a few days later, and found it hiding in plain site. Thank goodness for tourists.


The car park asphalt at 6 meters away puts the station rating at CRN4 [>2°C error], based on NOAA’s site quality rating system used for their Climate Reference Network. I’ve found that the vast majority of historical stations in the USA have been affected this way.

‘In Search of … The Coming Ice Age’ – A Video from 1978

Forget the fact that only 30 years ago there was a television program that featured the theory that we were heading into another ice age. I already knew that. I read that 1975 article in Newsweek. [link below]

What was fascinating was that the data presented was based on historical facts and trends. No one was to blame for what was happening to the planet. Man was not being condemned for causing the inevitable pending ice age nor was there an attempt to create a multi-billion dollar industry to prevent it from occurring. Congress and the world’s major countries weren’t at work trying to figure out how to reverse the conditions. (Those were being discussed but so were the ramifications if action was taken.)

GAZA, Israeli occupation forces (IOF) and Israeli gunboats fired at Rafah homes and Palestinian fishing boats south of the Gaza Strip on Saturday, local sources reported.

They said that IOF navy boats opened machinegun fire at Palestinian fishing boats off the Rafah coast but no casualties or material damage were suffered.

The Washington Post put ClimateGate on the front page, top left in Saturday’s edition. It’s also the top story at washingtonpost.com. The headline is "In e-mails, science of warming is hot debate." The website summary: "E-mails stolen from British research center show climate-change leaders noting flaws in their own data and seemingly scheming to muzzle critics."

Climategate Update

Timesonline reports confidence has been so shaken by the revelations from the hacked emails from the CRU, the British Met Office plans to take a full review of their data. The review is not expected to be completed until the end of 2012:

The new analysis of the data will take three years, meaning that the Met Office will not be able to state with absolute confidence the extent of the warming trend until the end of 2012.

Seoul has own fears over US surge

United States President Barack Obama set off a wave of speculation in the South Korean capital when he declaimed before American troops at Osan Air Base, south of Seoul, last month that "many of you served in Iraq", "others served in Afghanistan", "others among you may deploy yet again" - and "every American appreciates what you are trying to do".

The troops, gathered in a large warehouse facility at the end of Obama's recent swing through Northeast Asia, cheered at the tributes to service in the Middle East, but remained politely silent at the mention of deploying "yet again".
