THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

"Too many people are only willing to defend rights that are personally important to them. It's selfish ignorance, and it's exactly why totalitarian governments are able to get away with trampling on people. Freedom does not mean freedom just for the things I think I should be able to do. Freedom is for all of us. If people will not speak up for other people's rights, there will come a day when they will lose their own." -- Tony Lawrence (apl@world.std.com) 12/28/95

Anti-Jewish Terror is "God's Judgment"

"Judgment is very real and we see it played out on the pages of the newspapers and on the television. It's very real. When [Brickner's son] was in Jerusalem he was there to witness some of that judgment, some of that conflict, when a Palestinian from East Jerusalem took a bulldozer and went plowing through a score of cars, killing numbers of people. Judgment — you can't miss it."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Okay, no big deal; religious types say all kinds of nonsensical things, but I posted this here as an experiment to see if the corporate media types who gave Obama so much grief over Reverend Wright's extremist views are willing to do the same to Palin.

Sarah Palin Bikini Pictures: Fake Photos Hit The Web

So here's my question: with all the real fodder on S. Pallin - Pregnancies! DUIs! Dead moose! Her energy policy! Her lack of international experience! (listed in order of importance, obviously) - why bother with badly Photoshopped pictures?

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is an old tactic and it is called "poisoning the well." I will theorize that the bikini shot is put out by the Palin people, in order to use it to cast doubt on all the genuine damaging photos out there.

The Republican Hypocrisy is Enough to Make You Sick

Let me make it simple: hypocrisy. No Democrat would be foolish enough to state that liberals are perfect. That we're scandal-free. Sinners come in both blue and red. The difference is, Democrats don't sanctimoniously lecture everyone else from the bully pulpit about ethics. About what's moral. About what constitutes "acceptable" family values. About how to live your life. About right and wrong. Good vs. evil. That's what Republicans do. It's conservatives who want to tell us all how to live, who to marry, who to sleep with, what to do with our bodies, when to let a sick loved one die.

Once in 100 Years Credit Crisis, World Heads for Deflationary Collapse

“The credit crunch of the past year has not followed the path of recent economically debilitating episodes characterized by a temporary freezing up of liquidity ? 1982, 1989, 1997-8 come to mind. This crisis is different ? a once or twice in a century event deeply rooted in fears of insolvency of major financial institutions.

Credit Crunch Cancer Metastasizing

Two prime examples: Integrity Bank of Alpharetta, Ga., which just failed Friday with nearly a billion in deposits ... plus an even larger bank in trouble: BankUnited Financial Corp.

BankUnited is Florida's largest bank with 85 branches in 13 counties and with total assets of $14.2 billion.

In the first three quarters of last year, it reaped a profit of $23.2 million. The first three quarters of 2008? $200 million in losses!

Why? Because a whopping 58% of the bank's "assets" are option ARMs.

September Surprise

We haven't heard much about Iran lately, at least compared to the scare headlines of a few months ago, when rumors of war were swirling fast and furious. The Russian "threat" seems to have replaced the Iranian "threat" as the War Party's bogeyman of choice. What we didn't know, however, is that the two focal points are intimately related.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If this is true, and Mc Cain's chances look bad for the November election, this may very well be the scenario which plays out concerning Iran.

War with Russia, anyone??? Russia will not allow an attack on Iran to happen without severe repercussions for both Israel and the US.

Of course, folks like Dick Cheney aren't concerned: they've got their bunkers, their medical help, and food for themselves and their families. Should such an event take place, the rest of the nation will simply be left on its own.

Everyone has seen the stand alone, classic 1951 film, "The Day the Earth Stood Still" directed by Robert Wise starring Michael Rennie as "Klaatu". It was based on Harry Bates' "Farewell To the Master" and is science fiction at its best.

"They've been a pastor for two years at a church with 150 people but he shares our values, so we hired him to be pastor of our 5,000 person church? It wouldn't happen! By age seven most children have begun the process of understanding. It’s basic stuff like reading, writing, right and wrong, and a myriad of other things that allow their little brains to make sense of the world. Our brat-child 911 however, seems to be suffering developmental delays, still clinging to the easter bunny and tooth fairy even though he saw mom slip the quarter under his pilliow that night he pretended to be asleep. At the time, critics charged that the Bush administration was using the toxic fuel as an excuse to demonstrate missile-defense and antisatellite capabilities.

Genetically 'improved' oysters 'behind France's shellfish plague'

Last month farmers around France announced that they had lost between 40 and 100 per cent of their oysters aged one to two years old.

According to oysters farmers cited by weekly magazine Marianne, the culprit is the triploid oyster, which is modified to give it three pairs of chromosomes instead of two, as is the case with common oysters.

"It's the triploid's fault", one was quoted as saying. "But one mustn't say that because the scientific and financial stakes are considerable".

Military units provide show of force at GOP convention

After violent Labor Day protests in which 286 people were arrested near the Republican convention, law enforcement personnel made a dramatic show of force on Tuesday by deploying military units in more-visible locations around the Xcel Energy Center. The Bush Regime's Imperial Affirmation: Endless War, Endless Conquest, Endless Repression

While people around the world begin to celebrate George W. Bush's January 20, 2009 departure from the White House, senior administration officials are crafting legislation, rule changes and executive orders that will make permanent the worst excesses of this criminal regime.

And in an election year, you can count on a Democratic-controlled Congress to continue abdicating their role as a brake on the executive branch, ever-fearful that far-right attack dogs and their media accomplices will label them "soft on terror."

Webmaster's Commentary:

I think that the reason the GOP is unconcerned with Sarah Palin's scandals is that they are confident they can steal another election.

New Spy Software Coming On-Line: "Surveillance in a Box" Makes its Debut

According to New Scientist, German electronics giant Siemens has developed software allegedly capable of integrating

GOP Convention Day One – Let the Deception Begin for Team McBush

During the horrific aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, President Bush did not think it was important enough to leave his vacation while American citizens were dying. Sarah Palin Appearances Cancelled; Meets With AIPAC

Except for a meeting with the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC, Sarah Palin appearances have been canceled, according to WSJ. "She has to familiarize herself with every position John McCain has held over a number of years. That takes work and briefing," one McCain aide said. She has been kept from contact with the media and others by Republican operatives. Palin spent Tuesday in her hotel suite meeting with campaign aides and working on her speech.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Palin's nomination is an insult to the American people. Once again the GOP thinks they can pick just about anyone, in this case the hot babe beauty queen, and shove them down the throats of Americans if they just spend enough money on advertising and kiss up to Israel.

The GOP really thinks you are stupid enough to go for this woman just because she is a woman, even though she has been caught using political power for personal vendetta, favors increased spending and taxes in practice while denouncing it in speeches, and talks family values while not living them herself.

Raiding Democracy in St. Paul

In the months leading up to the Republican National Convention, the FBI-led Minneapolis Joint Terrorist Task Force actively recruited people to infiltrate vegan groups and other leftist organizations and report back about their activities. On May 21, the Minneapolis City Pages ran a recruiting story called "Moles Wanted." Law enforcement sought to preempt lawful protest against the policies of the Bush administration during the convention.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The Republicans are no longer the party of the rich, but the party of tyranny and dictatorship! These activities aimed at preempting lawful protests are not only criminal actions that violate the constitution, they are illegal uses of taxpayer funds; money paid by the taxpayers to track down and arrest robbers, killers, and rapists, not harass students and nuns expressing just criticism of the government's actions.

A Disappointing Finish for Americans at Education Olympics

The folks responsible for the first Education Olympics are the policy wonks at the Thomas B. Fordham Institute in Washington, D.C. Michael Petrilli, who oversees national education research projects at the institute, apparently caught the Olympic bug and decided to see what would happen if, instead of competing in pole vaulting or in the 400-meter swim relay, Americans competed in academic challenges.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Please don't think that the failures of US education are accidental. There are some very solid reasons why public education is generally atrocious in this country.

Oh, most likely. But the very fact that the question needs to be asked – and I'm not the only one asking it, believe me – indicates what a joke Sarah Palin has already become. State of emergency declared in Bangkok

Bangkok was braced for another night of unrest tonight despite the declaration of a state of emergency after one man was shot dead and scores were injured in street battles between supporters and opponents of the Thai prime minister, Samak Sundaravej.

To add to the crisis, a government commission ruled that Mr Samak’s People Power Party should be dissolved because of election fraud perpetrated last year by one of its leaders. If the order is upheld it could lead to a general election, Thailand’s fourth in four years, and further exacerbate the acute atmosphere of confrontation.

Film of Soldiers' Atrocity Incurs Heavy Price

The window through which Salam Amira, 16, filmed the moment when an Israeli soldier shot from close range a handcuffed and blindfolded Palestinian detainee has a large hole at its centre with cracks running in every direction.

"Since my video was shown, the soldiers shoot at our house all the time," she said. The shattered and cracked windows at the front of the building confirm her story. "When we leave the windows open, they fire tear gas inside too."

Webmaster's Commentary:

This teenager demonstrated a great deal of personal courage by filming this incident, then making it public. Courage is never about not being afraid; it's about being afraid, but ultimately doing the right thing.

Salam knew the risk she was taking, but took it in behalf of all the Palestinian people who have been mistreated by the Israeli military.

What Salam did was to tell the truth through this video, and that's why her family is being persecuted by the Israeli military.

Memo to the Israeli government: you are courting a public relations nightmare in punishing this teenager and her family.

Making them martyrs will have the absolutely opposite outcome from the one you're trying to create. This issue will not go away as long as you continue to persecute Salam and the Amira family.

Sos here's a radical idea; you don't like the negative publicity, CHANGE THE IDF'S BEHAVIOR. That is the real problem: not that it continues to get documented, as it was in this case.

Violence pins down thousands of rural Colombians

More than 4,400 Colombians were driven from their rural communities or pinned down in their homes Monday by gunfights among leftist rebels, other armed groups and state security forces, the Red Cross said.

The country is still exporting about 600 tons of cocaine annually, despite billions of dollars in U.S. aid aimed at cracking down on the trade.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So much for the effectiveness of much-vaunted "war on drugs".

One has to wonder just how more useful those billions of dollars, spent in this program, might have been spent at home for education, jobs retraining for those who have had their jobs outsourced overseas, or the care of our vets who desperately need medical and social services.

But, of course, those kinds of expenditures would have been logical considerations, and would show true value for the money spent.

What, precisely, has been the benefit and result of the US's "war on drugs"?

It appears the result of this "war" has been that of more drugs available on the streets of this country, not less.

It is oddly ironic that whenever an administration declares "war on any issue (war on poverty, war on drugs, etc.,) the efforts at eradication of whatever the issue is appear only to make the problem worse.

Income, spending drop despite stimulus

Consumer spending slowed dramatically as personal incomes plunged in July, reflecting the short-lived impact of $93 billion in economic stimulus checks.

Even as spending decreased, prices continued to increase - suggesting that overall consumption could decline in the third quarter. If consumption declines, the breadth and depth of any recession would likely be greater than the 2001 downturn, when consumption continued to grow throughout the recession.

Many economists are predicting the U.S. economy will slip into recession by the time voters cast their ballots in November.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It looks like the stimulus ... wasn't. It was a pathetic attempt by Bush to bribe you into forgiving him for the lies that led to the war in Iraq, and as predicted by wise observers when the stimulus was announced, $600 per person wasn't going to markedly change anyone's lives, and worse, it contributed to inflation and made things worse.

Cheney to `Stiffen the Spine' of Georgia, Ukraine

``Cheney's mission is to stiffen the spine'' of the countries' leaders, said Mark Parris, a former U.S. ambassador to Turkey who also served as a diplomat in Moscow. ``They'll want to know U.S. plans, and what's available, to ensure that Russia isn't able to throw its weight around more broadly in the region.''

Webmaster's Commentary:

"Stiffen the spine"??

With, precisely, what?!?

Russia's leadership (chess players, most of them) are quietly arranging for deals to transport oil and natural gas outside the sphere of western influence.

Forgive me, but such moves seem far more sane than invading and occupying foreign countries for their oil or oil routes, and killing millions of foreign nationals not to mention the thousands of US troops killed or maimed in these efforts.

Unless Cheney promises - and then can deliver - massive deliveries of troops (which we don't have) or materials (when Putin has stated that the rearming of Georgia will be considered an act of war), Cheney's raising on a busted flush!

Putin vows 'an answer' to NATO ships near Georgia

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that Russia will respond calmly to an increase in NATO ships in the Black Sea in the aftermath of the short war with Georgia, but promised that "there will be an answer."

Russia has repeatedly complained that NATO has too many ships in the Black Sea. Foreign Ministry official Andrei Nesterenko said Tuesday that currently there are two U.S., one Polish, one Spanish and one German ship there.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One has to wonder what the foreign policy people in Washington believe they are doing in antagonizing Russia to this degree, and just what outcome they attend to achieve.

Unfortunately, as have most of Washington's foreign policy blunders in the last eight years, this move may well come back to haunt the US and NATO for a long time to cdome.

I've been looking at a lot of the arguments over the rumors that Sarah Palin's son with downs syndrome is actually her grandson, that her daughter Bristol actually gave birth to the child and they're hiding that fact. And frankly, I think there's good reason to believe that may be the case. Not conclusive proof, but several lines of circumstantial evidence that add up to a pretty compelling case.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Palin's shills are trying to frame this as the blogs abusing the baby with Down's syndrome. But it is clear from this article that the questions raised about Sarah Palin's character are not going to go away any time soon.

Nor should they.

The bottom line is that a reasonable person examining the evidence would conclude that there is something very odd about the official story.

And how Sarah Palin conducts her personal life is key to predicting how she will condust herself as Vice President, or potentially (given McCain's health and age) President.

Palin's Church May Have Shaped Controversial Worldview

Speaking before the Pentecostal church, Palin painted the current war in Iraq as a messianic affair in which the United States could act out the will of the Lord.

Palin was a high school star, says schoolmate

Amy Gwin, 43, of University City, grew up in Alaska and competed in the Miss Wasilla, Alaska, competition in 1984 against GOP vice presidential choice Sarah Palin. Gwin said Friday that she won the Miss Congeniality award in the competition, although Palin's Wikipedia entry says she won the contest — and the Miss Congeniality award. Gwin was a year behind Palin, now 44, at Wasilla High School, which had about 800 students. Gwin said Palin was "a high school star in a good way," a beauty who got good grades and excelled at athletics.

Dutch intel: US to strike Iran in coming weeks

The Dutch intelligence service, the AIVD, has called off an operation aimed at infiltrating and sabotaging Iran's weapons industry due to an assessment that a US attack on the Islamic Republic's nuclear program is imminent, according to a report in the country's De Telegraaf newspaper on Friday.

The report claimed that the Dutch operation had been "extremely successful," and had been stopped because the US military was planning to hit targets that were "connected with the Dutch espionage action."

"Grandma Sarah:" The Gift that Keeps on Giving. McCain's Veep Continues to Sink his Campaign

"This is great!...It really shows courage!...What's the big deal?" Take a spin around right-wing radio and you'll hear the talking heads tripping over themselves to minimize the significance--or better yet, unconvincingly celebrate--the news that Sarah Palin's 17-year-old unmarried daughter Bristol is five months pregnant. Adding insult to injury, Palin likely lied about it all to Sen. John McCain when she was being vetted as his vice-presidential nominee. This ticket is coming apart at the seams. It was McCain's birthday last week, but he gave the Democrats one giant gift in Palin.

Buy-Bull Bangers: Regular, or Extra-Crispy?

For those buy-bull bangers who insist that god orders all things that happen, I want you to think about something. President Bush claimed that God told him to invade Iraq. Seen any hurricanes strike Iraq? Or Iran? No? Or floods, like those hitting the Midwest this year and the US Northeast last year? Seen any equivalent disasters hitting Iran or Iraq?

The high price of Sarah Palin's candidacy

The Alaska governor's decision to accept Sen. John McCain's offer to be his running mate says one of two things, take your pick: 1) She is so naïve and clueless that she didn't realize her daughter's condition would place the 17-year-old and her lover in a national media spotlight, or 2) Palin knew that and went ahead anyway, throwing her own daughter under the train in a reckless rush for national fame and power.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Or 3) the "My daughter is pregnant now" claim is itself a lie, designed to obfuscate the earlier question of Trig's parentage. And again, if this is the case, Sarah is tossing her daughter into a media firestorm for Sarah's own political gain.

Palin Pick Shows, Awareness of the Israel Lobby Is Now Out There in the American Hinterland

At the risk of contradicting myself (it's never stopped me before), an argument can be made that Palin demonstrates that the Israel lobby is alive in the mind of the American polity. People know something's rotten in the state of Baghdad/Washington, and even if the MSM won't talk about the Israel lobby, apart from Joe Klein and Jeffrey Goldberg squealing out contraband thoughts, people have heard about the Israel agenda in countless ways.

Regular Brasscheck TV viewers know that throughout its second term, the Bush administration actively interfered with states that attempted to enforce their own state lending laws.

Why do we keep letting the politicians get away with lies?

Not that we'll pay attention. And why should we when the Canadian department of national defence – in an effort to staunch the flow of Canadian blood in the sands of Afghanistan (93 servicemen and women "fallen" so far in their hopeless Nato war against the Taliban) – has brought in a Virginia-based US company called the Terrorism Research Centre to help. According to the DND, these "terrorism experts" are going, among other subjects, to teach Canadian troops – DO NOT LAUGH, READERS, I BEG YOU DO NOT LAUGH – "the history of Islam"!

Webmaster's Commentary:

When the American people have the courage to make the cost of lies outweigh the benefits; when we have the strength to pry liars out of our public buildings and throw then into the streets hard enough to bounce twice in the most humiliating manner possible; when we chase the liars down those streets cheering at their coat of tar and feathers, then and only then will we have honest government.

And we will not have it one second before.

SOME THOUGHTS ON THE PALIN FIASCO

Of course, it’s not so much about babies and pregnancies and who had whose child; it is, however, very much about hypocrisy and the ability of the Republican combination of John McCain and Sarah Palin to give the American people an honest accounting of themselves because if they can’t even do that, how are they going to be trusted to govern the US, the worlds most influential nation?

Webmaster's Commentary:

I for one an sick of politicians who feel that concealment from the public whose taxes pay for all is a divine right.

The issue over Trig is not about Trig nor even about Bristol, but about yet another politician that We The People cannot and should not trust. Our current Vice President came into office with secret energy task force meetings that apparently laid the foundations for a war, and is still fighting tooth and nail to tell the American people that it is none of their business what goes on inside the halls of power. The issue over whether Palin faked a pregnancy is not a question about the pregnancy; it is a question of the candidate's character.

And, setting aside the question of the pregnancy that may not have been (and the hypocrisy of a moral preaching that does not match a personal life) there is still the troopergate mess, which reveals a politician willing to use political power for personal vendetta. And that is something we DARE not allow into the Vice President's mansion. We have already seen a Vice President force the man he shot with a shotgun to apologize on TV. Palin os clearly more of the same.

Palin is on the ticket, and McCain is stuck with her. All Obama has to do is not make any mistakes, and he will be the next President.

ABC Confirms Palin was a member of AIP (Alaskan Independence Party)

Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which, since the 1970s, has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States.

The Daily News had asked Palin's press secretary, Bill McAllister, over the weekend to address rumors that Bristol was pregnant.

Why the Palin pick means More War

You may initially balk at the idea that the obscure, beyond under-qualified Sarah Palin, who McCain recently tapped as his VP running mate, somehow translates into a prognosis for an expanded war, most likely to involve Iran. There have been a great deal of opinions put forward on this puzzling move: they need the evangelicals, they want to draw ex-Hillary supporters (please...), it's a 'hail Mary' pass, because they know they are doomed.

Governor Sarah Palin Gives Alaska Department Of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan The Bum's Rush

On Friday July 11th, 2008, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin abruptly - and I do mean ABRUPTLY - removed Walt Monegan (pictured at left) from his position as Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety. And to add insult to injury, Palin didn't even tell him personally - she dumped the job on her chief of staff. Official explanations continue to be somewhat lame.

Governor Palin admitted to possible pressure from her administration to fire former Department of Public Safety Director Walt Monegan. She was called "a politician of eye-popping integrity" and sections on her participation in a beauty pageant and her alleged use of influence to get her former brother-in-law fired were diminished.
