It's Not Because Palin is a Woman, It's Because She's the Wrong Woman

Enough already with the sexism charge. Not only is it patently false, but it's hypocritical. What happened to the right-wing's chorus of "Why can't we criticize Sen. Barack Obama without being called racists?" Now that the shoe's on the other foot our whiney friends on the right are crying foul over the left's outrage over Sen. John McCain's appointment of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate. Yes, Democrats are upset.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I still think that McCain would have done far better to tap Hawaii's Governor Linda Lingle as VP. She may not be a hot babe (Sorry, Linda) but she knows how to run a government.

Cheney tells Peres: Russia supplies weapons to terrorists

U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney met with President Shimon Peres on the sidelines of the Ambrosetti forum on the edge of Italy's Lake Como on Saturday, telling the Israeli leader that Russia is selling arms to Damascus and Iran with the clear knowledge that they are being channeled to Hezbollah and terror groups in Iraq.

The American vice president later reiterated these remarks in his address at the economic conference, saying that "Russian arms dealing in the Middle East has endangered the prospects for peace and freedom in the region."

Webmaster's Commentary:

And the American funneling of arms and significant amounts of money to Israel have NOT "...endangered the prospects for peace and freedom in the region."?

Apparently, in his absence of a capacity for true critical thinking, Cheney is incapable of appreciating the delicious irony of that remark.

Shimon Peres: murderer, liar and hypocrite

In a statement in Rome on Friday, 5 September, Peres called for barring Hamas from taking part in any future elections in occupied Palestine until the group terminated all forms of resistance to the Nazi-like Israeli occupation.

Peres utterly ignored the lingering reign of murder and terror inflicted for too long on the helpless and virtually unprotected Palestinians by a morally callous state that thinks that the events which took place in Europe more than six decades ago justify the genocidal ethnic cleansing being meted out to Zionism’s victims.

Hamid Karzai blames Britain for Taliban resurgence

Karzai claims Brown has threatened to withdraw British troops from Helmand province, where 31 of them have died this year, if the president reinstates two provincial governors sacked for alleged dealings in the heroin trade.

One of them is Sher Mohammed Akhundzada, the former governor of Helmand, who was forced out under British pressure two years ago after nine tons of opium and heroin were discovered in his basement. Karzai’s plan to reinstate the governors has alarmed western diplomats in Kabul and dismayed British officials.

High Treason: 'Pentagon Lied to the 911 Commission' ; Bush's Theory Falls Apart

911 Commission co-chairs claim that they were misled, perhaps deliberately, by the Bush administration and Pentagon brass. Because 911 was an act of mass murder overtly covered up by the Bush administration, the many lies by Bush amount to more than mere obstructions of justice or cover ups. They amount to high treason --a mechanism by which this administration seized power unconstitutionally. Holes in Bush's theories are holes in Bush's theories. Lack of evidence in support of Bush does not refute his critics who point them out.

McCain attacked 18 year old Chelsea Clinton in 1998 now says Palin's family & kids are off limits

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."

Webmaster's Commentary:

I want to clarify something here. We are NOT "going after the children." I wish Bristol and Trig and lot of luck and a good life (better than our generation had, I hope).

The questions we are asking related to just how Trig came into the world are questions not of Trig but of the candidate herself, of whether she is trustworthy and honest, or just another conniving hypocrite who talks one thing and lives another.

Sarah Palin wants us all to vote her into the Vice Presidency, and given McCain's age, there is a non-negligible chance she could be the President. Therefore, there is no aspect of her life that is off limits, because we need to know what kind of person this candidate is; that she lives the values she claims to support, rather than simply saying what she thinks we all want to hear.

IT'S SUNDAY. SO WHERE'S SARAH?

The RNC has gone into full Suppress-Sarah mode. No Sunday morning talk shows. No print interview with Time magazine. No talk to anyone who has an opportunity for a credible followup, like, "Governor, I know you're the one wearing lipstick, but that doesn't answer the question I asked."

That's right. The woman who would be Cheney-redux; the woman who is should be ready on day one to handle the second most powerful job on the planet and- just in case - prepared to take the over reigns from her boss, is not ready yet to answer questions from Tom Brokaw. The lady has better things to do.

Cheney holds talks in Italy on Georgia crisis

The two also discussed EU dependance on Russian oil and gas, a crucial factor in the 27-nation bloc's dealing of the crisis following five days of fighting last month between Georgia and Russia.

The EU buys 30 percent of the oil it imports from Russia, while about 40 percent of the EU's imported natural gas also comes from Russia.

Ramadan in Palestine

Palestinian houses are easily distinguished from Israeli houses by one non-variant feature: Palestinian houses have water storage tanks on top of them. Running water 24 hours a day is reserved for Israeli colonial settlers. A trickle is occasionally sent our way and we try to maximize its use. But storage tanks on top of roofs are increasingly not helpful as the water pressure is so low when it is on that water cannot reach that high. Those who can afford it, have started putting new tanks on the ground or buying supplemental water.

Bye Bye Banks: Freddie and Fannie Preferred Holders to Take Big Hits?

Lots of small and mid-sized banks in the U.S. have, with encouragement from regulators, built up big holdings in Fannie and Freddie preferred stock, which they use to satisfy their capital requirements. If Fannie and Freddie preferred shares become worthless, a lot of banks will become insolvent. Which, with the FDIC insurance fund already being depleted by bank failure, could end up costing taxpayers a ton.

The Iranians will simply not allow Israeli and/or American military forces to attack its territory without a major response. Any significant counter-attack on Israel and/or American regional bases will trigger a much greater counter-response.

US plays both sides in the Philippines

But what interests have the USIP, the US military, and the other US government agencies been advancing? Analysts have advanced two possibilities. The US is now supporting moves toward the creation of a more autonomous - or even an independent - pro-US Bangsamoro state as a hedge against a more pro-China Philippines. Or the United States has only been manipulating the peace talks to deliberately foment and prolong conflict between Filipinos and Moros in order to justify its sustained intervention in Mindanao.

U.S. Rescue Seen at Hand for 2 Mortgage Giants

Senior officials from the Bush administration and the Federal Reserve on Friday called in top executives of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the mortgage finance giants, and told them that the government was preparing to place the two companies under federal control, officials and company executives briefed on the discussions said.

US attack inside Pakistan threatens dangerous new war

This utterly reckless policy, which risks the eruption of a US war against Pakistan, is bipartisan in character.

The US attack on the village of Jalal Khei is another demonstration that the shift in policy, with all its potentially catastrophic consequences, is already underway.

Nearly 600,000 Subject to Possible Caging in Ohio

The National Voter Registration Act prohibits any state from purging names from the voting rolls within 90 days of an election.

The law doesn’t, however, preclude mass partisan challenges on or shortly before Election Day — known as voter caging — based on the same returned envelopes from state-sponsored mailers like the ones in Ohio and others going out across the country.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Here we go again.

If anyone from the Obama campaign is reading this, you had better start a drive to recruit poll-watchers. Call Bev Harris up at blackboxvoting.org. McCain cannot win the election, but he and his cronies can sure steal it, and it looks like they are already setting the stage to do just that.

Team McCain and the Trooper

Key Alaska allies of John McCain are trying to derail a politically charged investigation into Gov. Sarah Palin's firing of her public safety commissioner in order to prevent a so-called "October surprise" that would produce embarrassing information about the vice presidential candidate on the eve of the election.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It occurs to me that if the Alaska legislature really wanted to delink the investigation from the campaign they would have postponed the conclusions until after the election. If they are moving it up two weeks, it tells me the fix is in and they are going to clear Palin so she can play the poor wronged victim right into the US Naval Observatory.

Window on Eurasia: Moscow Wins a Major Victory on Pipelines

With Iran’s declaration that it opposes the construction of any undersea pipelines in the Caspian on "ecological grounds" and thus will block any delimitation of the seabed that allows for them and Baku’s decision not to back the West’s push NABUCCO project, Moscow can claim its first major political victory from its invasion of Georgia.

Webmaster's Commentary:

No wonder Cheney looked as though he was grinding his teeth to a pulp when he finished his round of "diplomatic meetings" in Azerbaijan!

It's not just access to the oil that matters: it's how to get the oil from where it exists to where it needs to be which is of critical importance.

Russia has used diplomacy and deals to get where they are in terms of control of oil, natural gas, and pipelines.

The US administration has been killing and maiming to get where they are on the same issue.

And after millions dead and maimed from our activities in the pursuit of oil, Russia winds up the winner.

Russia accuses West of warship provocation

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev accused the West on Saturday of acting provocatively in and around the Black Sea, where the United States is using warships to deliver humanitarian aid to Georgia.

“I wonder how they would feel if we now dispatched humanitarian assistance to the Caribbean, suffering from a hurricane, using our navy,” Medvedev said, adding that a whole U.S. fleet had been dispatched to deliver the aid.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US and NATO may find this provocation costing them dearly, particularly as it affects military operations in Afghanistan.

Pakistan has just announced it's cutting off supply lines to Afghanistan in retaliation for civilian deaths caused by US raids into Pakistan.

This makes the US and NATO even more critically reliant upon Russia than ever before to ferry non-combat goods into Afghanistan.

Where Have I Seen Sarah Palin Before?

Sarah Palin was much better dressed than the average show mom paraded on Iranian TV more than 20 years ago. The show moms were typically dressed in a black veil. But that’s about the biggest difference. The rhetoric was eerily familiar. When she was finished, I knew I had seen her before. Only that it wasn’t her. It was her ideological predecessors at a different time in a different country.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Leni Reifenstahl would have been very proud of the stagecraft behind Palin's acceptance speech: it created just the tone the Republicans were looking for.

Pakistan cuts supply lines to NATO troops in Afghanistan

In a move seen as the latest fallout from Wednesday morning’s US attack on South Waziristan, the Pakistani government has ordered that supply lines to NATO troops in Afghanistan be immediately severed for an indefinite period of time.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Looks as though we're now at war against Pakistan. How the blazes did that happen?!?

It's simple: this administration suffers from the kind of arrogance which makes it blind to the potential consequences of any of its actions.

And here's the irony: with this closure of supply lines to NATO in Afghanistan, the US and NATO will have to depend upon Russia even more intensely now for transport of non-military supplies.

This is really going to prove an interesting time, considering that NATO and the US have appeared to do everything in their collective power to tick Russia off over both the nuclear shield in Eastern Europe, and in their response to Georgia's military aggression against Southern Ossetia.

Sane, far-sighted foreign policy analysts would have seen situation in Pakistan coming from miles away. However, sanity and far-sightedness have never been the hallmarks of this administration, as the last 8 years have so clearly and painfully demonstrated.

Leaked Iraq Deal May Allow Maliki to Bypass Parliament

Perhaps most stunningly, however, is that it reportedly states “This agreement goes into effect on the day that diplomatic memos confirming all constitutional procedures have been met in both countries are exchanged”. Though the move might not be without political consequences, it would seem to allow Prime Minister Maliki to bypass Parliament entirely simply by claiming, as the Bush Administration has, that the deal is a simple bilateral executive agreement and not subject to parliamentary oversight.

Webmaster's Commentary:

At the end of the day, one has to wonder just how much sovereignty the Iraqi government will actually be left with.

And I'm sure that the US spying on Al Maliki hasn't helped improve the tone of the negotiations at all.

US military trained Georgian commandos

The US military provided combat training to 80 Georgian special forces commandos only months prior to Georgia’s army assault in South Ossetia in August.

The contractors – MPRI and American Systems, both based in Virginia – recruited a 15-man team of former special forces soldiers to train the Georgians at the Vashlijvari special forces base on the outskirts of Tbilisi, part of a programme run by the US defence department.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One would think that someone in the US military should have have been "watching the ball" in terms of unrest in South Ossetia and wondering if Saakashvili might consider using these US-trained troops in some kind of an attempt to throw Georgian military weight around in this region.

If these troops were being readied for service in Afghanistan, why were they not being trained in Afghanistan??

We are beginning to see - and hear - documented stories of Georgian atrocities in South Ossetia. Looking at the outcome of MPRI's training of the Croatian military in the late 90s, what we are seeing and hearing about ethnic cleansing in South Ossetia shouldn't come as a surprise.

Melting Swiss glacier yields Neolithic trove, climate secrets

Some 5,000 years ago, on a day with weather much like today's, a prehistoric person tread high up in what is now the Swiss Alps, wearing goat leather pants, leather shoes and armed with a bow and arrows.

The unremarkable journey through the Schnidejoch pass, a lofty trail 2,756 metres (9,000 feet) above sea level, has been a boon to scientists. But it would never have emerged if climate change were not melting the nearby glacier.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Of course, what this confirms is that 5000 years ago the Earth was WARM enough to allow passage by foot through this area, which we are just coming back to being able to do now.

U.S. Near Deal on Fannie, Freddie

The Treasury Department is close to completing a plan to help shore up mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, according to people familiar with the matter.

The plan is expected to involve a creative use of Treasury's authority to intervene in the two companies, which it won earlier this year. One option under serious consideration would be to put the companies into the conservatorship of their regulator, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, said two people familiar with the matter. That would amount to a government takeover.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Note the use of the phrase "...a creative use of Treasury's authority to intervene in the two companies."

And remember: it's your collective checkbooks which are going to wind up bailing out these two private entities.

Before going into the cost of freedom, however, perhaps we need to take a closer look at what we mean by freedom, exactly.

The debt-based economy has turned the entire nation into a "...company town". Americans are living on borrowing, and when the economy slows down, the repayment of those loans becomes a trap. And it is worth reminding to those readers who claim that our nation is still doing well that private ownership of homes has been in decline for quite some time.

Among many bald statements, one stuck out: Israel is now ready to destroy three or four nuclear sites out of 12 in Iran.

State falling way behind No Child Left Behind

California schools, required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act to lift more students over a higher academic hurdle this year, instead stumbled and slipped back, as nearly 1,400 fewer schools met test-score targets.

The number of schools making "adequate yearly progress" plunged from 6,488 to 5,113 since last year, according to state educators who released school progress reports Thursday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The "No Child Left Behind Act" almost guarantees academic failure, rather than insuring academic success. Talk to any educator in a public school system, and they will tell you this is so.

If a teacher is continually "teaching for the tests", they have absolutely no time to really work with kids for whom English is a second or possibly third language. They lag behind the rest of their class, right up to the point where they become discipline problems in order to stay out of school. Then, they drop out because the school really has nothing to offer them but frustration.

Sarah Palin's Strange eBay Exaggeration

Politicians lie. They all do. The ones we have running all will lie, and if you're not choked with pure idealism you'll admit it. In fact, if you're jaded enough, you might even come to accept it, even respect it when it's done well. The concept isn't perplexing, especially when a deftly placed, glibly drawn half-truth can get yourself out of a dead-end argument.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A long time ago, I pointed out a strange lie by then-President Bill Clinton, who claimed he had given up junk food only to be photographed leaving a McDonalds right here on Oahu.

I observed at the time that a man willing to lie about insignificant things like a Big Mac was a man equally willing to lie about much larger issues, including things that affected our own lives. As the balance of Clinton's administration bore out, that observation was an accurate one.

And now we have a new candidate, Sarah Palin, caught in a trivial lie about an incident that nobody would have cared about at all were it not for the fact of the lie itself.

Apparently, this administration has decided to wage an undeclared war on Pakistan.

This will guarantee two things. First, that we are going to kill a lot of non-combatants.

Second, we will be radicalizing those left standing even further from Pakistan's government.

Another Controversy for Sarah Palin

Stambaugh's lawyer, William Jermain, says the chief tried to move up the closing hours of local bars from 5 a.m. to two a.m. after a spurt of drunk driving accidents and arrests.

"His crackdown on that practice by the bars was not appreciated by her and that was one reason she terminated Irl," said Jermain.

First thoughts: A missed opportunity?

Last night, John McCain wrapped up the final night of a two-week convention and VP rollout blitz as we now head into the 60-day sprint until Election Day. But McCain's speech seemed to be a missed opportunity. It appears the campaign decided it simply needed to get through it -- there wasn't anything new, except a longer description of his POW days.

Ukraine crisis a setback for EU, NATO bids

Renewed crisis in Ukraine is a fresh setback for its EU ambitions and those who want it to join NATO, despite growing concern about Russian moves to roll back Western influence after intervening in Georgia, analysts say.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Maybe the people of the Ukraine don't want a pro-western government. Maybe, especially after seeing how citizens in the US are being treated by the US government, they feel an anti-western government might be better for them.

If we are truly supportive of Democracy, is is not up to the Ukrainians to choose what government they will have?

Sarah Palin ‘affair’: big media stays quiet as ‘lover’ named

While America's respectable media focus on John McCain's acceptance speech to the Republican faithful, blogs and gossip sites continue to lead the feeding frenzy surrounding the National Enquirer's allegation, reported here yesterday, that McCain's running mate Sarah Palin had an affair with her husband's business partner.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Remember when John Edward's affair was the hot news story all during the time Hillary's supporters claimed that public knowledge of the affair would have shifted the nomination to her? (And remember how quickly the Edwards story faded once Hillary conceded to Obama?) Remember all the attention Edward's affair got even though he was already out of the race, and the affair unable to affect our daily lives?

Well, I am casting the gauntlet down to the corporate media on this one. Only a few days ago, I pointed out how the media went after Obama's pastor for his supposed racist views, yet seemed unconcerned with Palin's pastor's claim that terrorism in Israel was God's punishment on Jews for refusing to convert to Christianity!

And here we are. The "Family values" nominee for Vice President has her own stained sheets. Fairness and honesty demands that the media examine this story with the same intensity with which they reported on John Edwards' affair.

So, media, will you be fair and unbiased? Or will you prove that you are still the lackeys of the rich and powerful GOP? Will it be one set of journalistic standards for the Democrats, and another kinder and gentler set for the GOP?

The gauntlet is thrown. The challenge is made. The whole world watches to see what the US corporate media will do now.

Why We Were Falsely Arrested

The Democratic and Republican national conventions have become very expensive and protracted acts of political theater, essentially four-day-long advertisements for the major presidential candidates.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The Constitution and Bill of Rights no longer exist in this country.

These wonderful documents, which used to serve as the foundation of the American Republic, have been, for all intents and purposes, torn up and thrown away in the streets of St. Paul Minnesota.

Apparently, to the St. Paul Police Department, they're just.... litter.

Biden raises the bar

During a teleconference between Senator Biden and members of the Jewish press yesterday, the Democratic Vice Presidential candidate stated his candid opinion that AIPAC does not speak for the government of Israel. Russian Lawmaker Says Moscow to Deploy Weapons Near Poland

Viktor Zavarzin, head of the defense committee in the State Duma, said Thursday Russia has new weapons that will be installed near the sites where Washington plans to deploy interceptor missiles.

The Itar-Tass news agency quoted Zavarzin as saying there are proposals to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in the Kaliningrad region bordering Poland, but that for now there is no need for such a move.

The Blackwater DEA photo scrubbed from the LA Times

“We heard some noise outside, and then the door literally burst in, and the DEA came in in full combat gear, told everybody to get on the floor and put their hands behind their heads,” Carey said. “It was like, literally, an episode of “24,” when they bust in on a terrorist cell.”

That’s the description of the Culver City DEA dispensary raid I blogged about last Friday. Who knew that the “terrorist cell” description would have another frightening parallel. That agent unloading DEA evidence is wearing a Blackwater t-shirt.

Why We Were Falsely Arrested

Government crackdowns on journalists are a true threat to democracy. As the Republican National Convention meets in St. Paul, Minn., this week, police are systematically targeting journalists. I have been wrongly charged with a misdemeanor. My co-workers, who were simply reporting, may be charged with felony riot.

Senator Biden Wrong: AIPAC Does Represent the Government of Israel

Accused of not backing AIPAC sponsored legislation, Biden told reporters, "They think they know the Senate better than I do. They don't know the Senate better than I do...AIPAC does not speak for the State of Israel."

The outspoken Senator Biden, often compared to president John F. Kennedy, is wrong. Newly declassified documents reveal that before his death, JFK's most pressing concerns were registering the Israel lobby as foreign government agents and inspections of the Israeli nuclear weapons program.

Are McCain's handlers playing the wrong card?

In an attempt to find out exactly what the man did to earn these many hero awards, I asked his Senate office three times to provide copies of the narratives for each medal. I'm still waiting.

I next went to the Pentagon. Within a week, I received a recap of his medals and many of the narratives that give the details of what he did.

None of the awards, less the DFC, were for heroism over the battlefield where he spent no more than 20 hours. Two Naval officers described the awards as "boilerplate" and "part of an SOP medal package given to repatriated (Vietnamera) POWs."
