Freeze of the century: Army on standby in coldest December for 100 years

The army was put on high alert last night as Britain headed towards its coldest December for 100 years.

As temperatures plunged to -18c (0f) David Cameron said the military ‘stands ready to help’.

The Prime Minister also revealed Cobra-style emergency meetings of senior officials and Ministers had been held to discuss the Government’s response to the big freeze.
