Operation “Empty Field”: causes, developments, lessons

Undoubtedly, the recent and relatively short Georgian-South Ossetian armed conflict that lasted only for five days from 8 till 12 August 2008, will go down into contemporary history as the most dramatic and fierce confrontation with a substantial use of military might that occurred in the former Soviet area after the collapse of the USSR 17 years ago. For the first time a regular Russian Army took part in a battle with Georgia, the former Soviet republic, with both sides involving the entire spectrum of conventional arms.
