Georgia Fight Spreads, Moscow Issues Ultimatum

The pivotal question in the conflict, which has involved heavy fighting since late last week, is now whether Russia — which has poured troops into both Abkhazia and South Ossetia — will push beyond these regions and further into Georgia.

Russia may well be pushing to re-absorb Georgia, Abkazia, and Southern Osseta back into the Russian Federation.

This would give Russia a border with Armenia, which is friendly to both Russia and Iran.
