US layoffs surge to 6-month high: Challenger

Layoffs surged in January to the highest levels since July as employers in the retail and energy sectors pulled out the pink slips, according to a private survey out Thursday.

U.S.-based companies announced 75,114 planned job cuts last month, up more than 200 percent from a 15-year low in December, according to global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. That figure was also 42 percent higher from a year ago.

Retailers were the biggest job cutter, despite a nearly 8 percent bump in U.S. holiday sales in 2015. The sector slashed 22,246 positions, a seven-year high.

Wal-Mart accounted for much of the payroll reductions. The nation's largest retailer said it plans to close 269 stores and expects to let go 16,000 workers.

Macy's said it will also shutter some locations this year, costing 4,820 employees their jobs.

Monsanto Actually DID Buy the BLACKWATER Mercenary Group

A report by Jeremy Scahill in The Nation revealed that the largest mercenary army in the world, Blackwater (later called Xe Services and more recently “Academi”) clandestine intelligence services was sold to the multinational Monsanto. Blackwater was renamed in 2009 after becoming famous in the world with numerous reports of abuses in Iraq, including massacres of civilians. It remains the largest private contractor of the U.S. Department of State “security services,” that practices state terrorism by giving the government the opportunity to deny it.

Almost simultaneously with the publication of this article in The Nation, the Via Campesina reported the purchase of 500,000 shares of Monsanto, for more than $23 million by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which with this action completed the outing of the mask of “philanthropy.” Another association that is not surprising.

Israeli Military Censor Seeks to Expand Control to ‘Prominent’ Facebook Users

The Israeli military censor usually tries to stay out of the headlines. It’s not always easy, as several times high-profile Israel-related stories have broken in the US media first, and aren’t “allowed” in Israeli papers for days after.

Those incidents are a constant reminder that in Israel, nothing even vaguely national security-related gets published in an Israeli paper without the military censor’s say-so. Today, the military censor is trying to extend that control even further, presenting “orders” to high-profile bloggers and Facebook users, demanding they be placed under the same control.

At least 30 Israelis have received such orders. Many, like Yossi Gurvitz, are outspoken critics of the Israeli government’s policy. Gurvitz says he will be pursuing legal options to get around having to pre-submit all his criticisms to the military censor and get permission before publishing.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Deliberately confusing criticism of the Israeli government with criticism of the Jewish people is a handy tactic, used by the Israeli government ever since its inception.

This will mean the end of what little freedom of speech Israelis had previously known, and the beginning of even more draconian, Orwellian propaganda by the state, which the Israeli people will be ORDERED to believe, and never dare question.

As Americans Prep for Super Bowl Sunday, Their Future Is Being Sold to the Corporate Elite

By Claire Bernish

“Films, football, beer, and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult….” ? George Orwell, 1984

As Americans train their attention to Super Bowl 50, their way of life — and for nearly half a million people, their livelihoods — just got one step closer to being signed away. This Thursday, in Auckland, New Zealand, representatives of the twelve nations participating in the Trans-Pacific Partnership gathered to sign the massive trade deal turned corporate coup, bringing an end to the obligatory 90-day period ostensibly set aside for debate, following the close of five years of negotiations in October...

AFTER OBAMA SIGNS TRANS-PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP, SESSIONS DEMANDS CANDIDATES REVEAL THEIR POSITION ON TRADE DEAL

Sessions suggests that the deal’s “unpopularity with the American people” may perhaps “explain why we are not seeing politicians expressing support for this gargantuan agreement,” despite the fact that many politicians voted to fast-track the deal– which helps to ensure not only the passage of TPP, but all subsequent trade pacts, which are now liberated from Senate filibuster, amendment process and constitutional treaty vote.

US Estimates: Up to 6,000 ISIS Fighters in Libya

When the US made the decision to launch a war against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, they dramatically underestimated the size of the ISIS forces there, aiming to downplay the effort for the sake of selling the war as smaller than it really would be. In Libya, they seem to be going the other way.

Pentagon estimates for Libya have around 3,000 ISIS fighters there, but as officials agitate for an expansion of the war into Libya, US officials are now revising the ISIS presence upward, saying that they now has as many as 6,000 fighters there.

It must be asked, however, if the sudden upward revision, which is coming at the exact time the administration is trying to sell the expansion of the war into Libya, is meant to make the ISIS force there look a lot more imposing than it really is.

Webmaster's Commentary:

(from a song of the same name, and a "J'accuse!" to President Obama)

"You're selling us war... but we're just not buyin'
You've got your talking heads all cued, but we know they're lyin'
Just how many more will you condemn to dyin'?!?
You can't justify this war, so just stop tryin')

(Ahem). Considering just how "brilliantly" our military misadventures in the Middle East and Afghanistan have gone over the last 16 years, one might think that the Pentagon would very seriously consider some other tactic than a reinvasion.

However, unfortunately, just because something is the most ham-fistedly, pig-headedly stupid thing the US government and military could do is no guarantee that they will not do it.

And also, unfortunately, doing the same thing precisely the same way, yet expecting a different outcome, is one of the classical definitions of insanity.

This is all about controlling Libya's oil (because the oil prices cannot stay at these levels forever), and natural gas, and assuring that these commodities will only be sold in US petrodollars.

UKRAINE GOVERNMENT IN CHAOS AS DEALS WITH OLIGARCHS, NEO-FASCISTS FRAY

The deal was pretty simple: in exchange for aligning with the Western-backed, post-coup government in Kiev against Russia, the corrupt oligarch class of Ukraine could keep their economic power and the wealth they made looting the country. The arrangement had the value of helping to temporarily secure the government in Kiev from a second coup and providing a funding source for the far-right militias sent to fight Russian-backed separatists in the east. The oligarchs largely went along for fear of losing their positions, or even their lives, as the government in Kiev had come to power through violence and vocal opponents of the new regime began disappearing.

Peace Talks “Paused” After Putin’s Triumph in Aleppo

A last ditch effort to stop a Russian-led military offensive in northern Syria ended in failure on Wednesday when the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) backed by the National Defense Forces (NDF) and heavy Russian air cover broke a 40-month siege on the villages of Nubl and al-Zahra in northwestern Aleppo province. The Obama administration had hoped that it could forestall the onslaught by cobbling together an eleventh-hour ceasefire agreement at the Geneva peace talks. But when the news that Syrian armored units had crashed through al Nusra’s defenses and forced the jihadists to retreat, UN envoy Staffan de Mistura suspended the negotiations tacitly acknowledging that the mission had failed.

Why the ‘Sultan of Chaos’ is freaking out

Picture sleepless nights at ‘Sultan’ Erdogan’s palace in Ankara. Imagine him livid when he learns the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), backed by Russian air power, started a preemptive Battle of Aleppo – through the Bayirbucak region - cutting off Ankara’s top weaponizing corridor and Jihadi highway.

Who controls this corridor will control the final outcome of the war in Syria.

Meanwhile, in Geneva, the remote-controlled Syrian opposition, a.k.a. High Negotiations Committee, graphically demonstrated they never wanted to meet with the Damascus delegation in the first place – “proximity” talks or otherwise, even after Washington and Moscow roughly agreed on a two-year transition plan leading to a theoretically secular, nonsectarian Syria.

The Saudi front wanted no less than Ahrar al-Sham, Jaysh al-Islam and all Jabhat al-Nusra, a.k.a. al-Qaeda in Syria, collaborators at the table in Geneva. So the Geneva charade, quicker than one can say “Road to Aleppo!” was exposed for what it is.

US military attacked for complicity in Afghan child soldiers after boy's murder

The Taliban’s murder of a 10-year old Afghan boy this week has cast a spotlight on the practice by US allies of turning children into fighters in the war-torn country.

Afghans have hailed the heroism of Wasil Ahmad, whom the Taliban killed in Uruzgan province on Monday for fighting alongside his uncle with a US-backed government militia called the Afghan Local Police.

Wasil had won acclaim for helping ALP forces break an insurgent siege after his uncle, the unit’s commander, was wounded. He was declare a national hero by the Afghan government, and paraded, wearing an oversized uniform and wielding an AK-47.

Overshadowed in the outpouring of grief is the grim practice of allowing children to take up arms, particularly alongside a quasi-official force created by the US military.

U.S., Russia “Base Wars” In Syria As Turkey Allegedly Prepares For Invasion

Israel’s Ex-Ambassador to UK Accused of Sexual Liaisons With Minors

Israel’s former ambassador to the UK has been accused of inviting men and boys for trysts late at night when his wife was not home. A British policeman filed a complaint with Israeli authorities about the incidents. A further investigation by the foreign ministry’s inspector general found that UK-born Ambassador Daniel Taub, who was ambassador from 2011-2015, violated security protocol by not notifying his chief of security of the identity of the visitors. The purpose of recording visitors is in order to prevent Israeli diplomatic personnel from being blackmailed or compromised. Since MI5 knew of Taub’s activities, the Israeli foreign ministry was concerned that he might be compromised by them or that one of his paramours might attempt to extort payments from him.

There Is No Freedom Without Truth — Paul Craig Roberts

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the “Soviet threat” was replaced with the “Muslim threat” and the “War on Terror” took over from the Cold War. Despite a succession of false flag attacks and warnings of a “thirty years war,” a few thousand lightly armed jihadists were an insufficient replacement for the Soviet Union and its thousands of nuclear ICBMs. It was an uncomfortable notion that the “world’s only superpower” could not dispose of a few terrorists.

So we are back to the Cold War with Russia. The propaganda is fast and furious. “Putin is the new Hitler.” “Russia invaded Ukraine.” Russia is about to invade the Baltics and Poland.” “Putin is a corrupt multi-billionaire.” “Putin is scheming to recreate the Soviet Union.” These accusations become headlines despite US military spending being a dozen or more times higher than Russian military spending and the Russian government expressing no hegemonic aspirations.

House bill requires women to sign up for draft

Two House Republicans introduced a bill Thursday requiring eligible women in the United States to sign up for the military draft, just days after it was recommended by the Marine Corps and Army.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., a Marine veteran, and Rep. Ryan Zinke, R-Minn., a retired Navy SEAL, filed the Draft American’s Daughters Act to stoke debate over the military’s historic move to fully integrate female troops into all combat roles. If passed, women from 18-26 years old would for the first time have to join men in registering with the Selective Service program and potentially be forced to fight in future wars.

“If this administration wants to send 18, 20-year-old women into combat, to serve and fight on the front lines, then the American people deserve to have this discussion through their elected representatives,” Hunter said in a released statement.

Webmaster's Commentary:

People Have A 'Fundamental Right' To Own Assault Weapons, Court Rules

In a major victory for gun rights advocates, a federal appeals court on Thursday sided with a broad coalition of gun owners, businesses and organizations that challenged the constitutionality of a Maryland ban on assault weapons and other laws aimed at curbing gun violence.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit said the state's prohibition on what the court called "the vast majority of semi-automatic rifles commonly kept by several million American citizens" amounted to a violation of their rights under the Constitution.

"In our view, Maryland law implicates the core protection of the Second Amendment -- the right of law-abiding responsible citizens to use arms in defense of hearth and home," Chief Judge William Traxler wrote in the divided ruling.

On the other side of the island of Oahu, there is the very formidable Kaneohe Marine Air Station, which every year features a "fun fair" where families are invited, and the atmosphere is one of a carnival.

But one of the most interesting aspects of this is watching young military men, who are great communicators, and great with kids, talking to wide-eyed youngsters about the wonders of the weapons they are seeing, and sometimes, very carefully, climbing over.

Of course, no mention is ever made, during these "teachable moments", of the carnage and annihilation, these instruments of death create.

This is the propaganda of empire, which cares not that our young men and women are killed or maimed for life; just that the wars provide the necessary profits and logistical resource control to allow that financial empire to grow, with absolutely no thought as to what the human sacrifice must happen in order to maintain and enhance corporate profits.

"The Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) … considered that Mr. Julian Assange was arbitrarily detained by the Governments of Sweden and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,” the statement said.

The group concluded that the WikiLeaks founder “is entitled to his freedom of movement and to compensation.”

NAVY STAGING 2-WEEK LONG ACTIVE SHOOTER DRILLS ON BASES NATIONWIDE

Starting this week, Sailors and Marines from coast to coast will spend half the month engaged in response training to stop active shooters and potential terrorists in their tracks.

The exercise, Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield 2016 (SC/CS16), will run through Feb. 12 and will test base police, fire and emergency management on how they respond to threats of active shooters and potential terrorists including role-playing on installation buildings with safe or simulated weapons to get a grip on how a more serious event could take place.

Navy officials cite past instances of attacks on installations stateside as a guide on what to be prepared for.

Last July, a terror attack by a gunman at two Navy installations in Chattanooga, Tennessee left four Marines and one Navy Sailor dead and an additional Marine and police officer wounded.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I cannot tell you why, but the announcement of these exercises is making me extraordinarily nervous.

To what end are these "exercises" happening, and what is the US government and military expecting to happen, that these exercises are deemed necessary right now?!?

Anti-Semitic French comedian Dieudonne barred from entering Hong Kong

French controversial comedian Dieudonne M'bala M'bala, who has been several times convicted for racist and anti-Semitic remarks, was barred from entering in Hong Kong where his two scheduled shows were cancelled. Dieudonne was detained by immigration officials at Hong Kong International Airport shortly after arriving on a flight from Bangkok. The block on Dieudonne's entry came reportedly after high-level diplomatic interventions by Israel and France, who warned that his planned appearances could have led to disorder and even violence if they went ahead ... Israeli consul general in Hong Kong Sagi Karni praised the government for "taking the right measures."

Anti-Semitism: Why Does It Exist? And Why Does it Persist?

Over the centuries, rage and hostility against Jews has repeatedly erupted in terrible violence. Again and again, Jews have been driven out of countries where they'd been living. Why does anti-Semitism exist? And why has furious hostility toward Jews broken out, again and again, in the most varied nations, eras and cultures? ... Anti-Semitism is not a mysterious "disease." As Herzl and Weizmann suggested, and as history shows, what is often called anti-Semitism is the natural and understandable attitude of people toward a minority with particularist loyalties that wields greatly disproportionate power for its own interests, rather than for the common good.

US tech companies have stashed over $420 billion overseas

It's no secret that the US government wants companies to bring more of their offshore profits back home for the sake of taxes, and it's now exceptionally clear as to why. Bloomberg has sifted through financial filings and discovered that the top eight American tech firms, including Apple, Google and Microsoft, are keeping more than $420 billion overseas -- $69 billion of it added in just the past year. That's over a fifth of the $2.1 trillion held abroad by American companies, and would easily cover a lot of government expenses. A tax on Microsoft's recent profits alone ($29.6 billion) would cover NASA and the Commerce Department for a year; Apple ($23.3 billion) could take care of the Transportation Department and Social Security, and Oracle could foot the bill for the Labor Department.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Corporations get away with this...because they can.

and in light of the reality that corporations own the United States Government, I seriously doubt that this is going to change anytime soon.

US, JAPAN, CANADA, AUSTRALIA AND 8 OTHER COUNTRIES SIGN TRANS PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT

The Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) would be horrible for Americans and the people of the world.

But most politicians are thoroughly corrupt. Neither the Democratic or Republican parties represent the interests of the American people. Both parties ignore the desires of their own bases.

So today, 12 countries – Brunei, Chile, New Zealand, Singapore, Australia Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, United States and Vietnam – signed the TPP.

They never followed through on their promise of an open and lively debate.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Politicians in the US care only for the corporations which fund their campaigns; those people they allegedly represent have become totally irrelevant, and an annoyance to the acquisition of their person wealth.

At this moment, Americans politicians can only be characterised as a pernicious disease, metastasizing in a system guaranteed to offer them untold wealth, as long as they explicitly follow the orders of their corporate masters.

And Lloyd Blankfein wonders why the American people are furious, and ready for massive change this year, other than the establishment, which has bankrupted them, to assure the establishment's permanent gain?!?!

Netanyahu thinks mild Ban Ki-moon incites terror

Has Benjamin Netanyahu gone bananas? I don't mean this as an aberration, like a politician who loses his marbles during a particular crisis. No, it was when I read the Israeli Prime Minister's response to Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General, that I realised he just might be a bit insane. Ban referred to "the profound sense of alienation and despair driving some Palestinians ... especially young people" since an increase in attacks on Israelis began last October. What Ban was saying was the truth, that "Palestinian frustration is growing under the weight of a half-century of occupation and the paralysis of the peace process". And he spoke of how "oppressed peoples have demonstrated throughout the ages, it is human nature to react to occupation ..."

Tear gas fired at 50,000 protesters, terror police raiding refugee centres and call for a rethink of the Geneva Convention... Chaos, crisis and just another day in the EU

Too many migrants are using the ‘outdated’ Geneva Convention to enter Europe when they are not in genuine need, Finland’s president has warned.

Sauli Niinisto called for a rethink of the 1951 UN treaty that obliges signatories – including Britain – to offer sanctuary to those fleeing danger.

He said it was not right that anyone could say the word ‘asylum’ on arrival and have the right to cross into Europe.

LEAK REVEALS DENVER POLICE USE UNDERCOVER ‘SHADOW TEAMS’ TO TARGET PROTEST LEADERS

A leaked police manual reveals how Denver police respond to marches and other forms of protest, including their use of undercover “platoons” of officers to pick out leaders for later arrest.

On Jan. 19, Unicorn Riot, an independent media collective with several members in the state, published a heavily redacted version of the 2011 edition of the “Denver Police Department Crowd Management Manual” obtained through a Colorado Open Records Act request. Days later, an anonymous source sent them an unredacted copy of the 2008 edition of the manual. The two editions appear to have few differences and the policies described in both versions match the behavior of police toward protests, according to activists and journalists interviewed by MintPress News.

“This manual has been a tremendous help to our reporting in terms of understanding the police apparatus that is deployed at protests,” representatives of Unicorn Riot told MintPress by email.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The police in this country, very much thanks to their training courtesy of the IDF, have become a thuggocracy to be feared and avoided, whenever possible.

And NEVER, ever in this country call 911 to assist in controlling someone who is either mentally ill, or coming down off medications; there is at least a 50/50 chance that police "assistance" in those cases, will result in that person's death.

Pitchfork Time? "Elites Have Lost Their Healthy Fear Of The Masses"

From the time of the French Revolution until the collapse of communism, what successive generations of elites had in common was a sense of fear of what the aggrieved masses might do. In the first half of the 19th century they worried about a new Jacobin Terror, then they worried about socialist revolution on the model of the Paris Commune of 1871. One reason for the first world war was a growing sense of complacency among European elites. Afterwards they had plenty to worry about in the form of international communism, which remained a bogey until the 1980s.

Bankers, Preachers, and Fear of President Sanders

The 2015-2016 presidential election has, by some measures, already accomplished more than all the previous elections in my lifetime put together. And it's scaring some of the right people.

If you had claimed in 1969 that it would be possible for presidential candidates in the United States to reject religion before they could reject permanent worldwide military empire, you'd have been laughed right out of the Age of Aquarius.

If you'd prognosticated in 1999 that an independent socialist focused like a laser beam on taxing billionaires and busting up some of their most profitable scams (not to mention taxing many of the rest of us) could grab the lead in a Democratic primary campaign against a Clinton with no intern scandals, you'd have been triangulated right out of your career as you knew it.

HOW HILLARY CLINTON STOLE IOWA: VOTER FRAUD CAUGHT ON LIVE TV

The important problem is that the Bernie counters recounted everyone, while the Hillary counter was literally recorded telling someone else that she only added newcomers to the count she had before, and then when asked if she recounted everyone, she lied to the organizer and said “Yes”. This means that if anyone left the caucus site who was supporting Bernie, then they were removed by Bernie’s recounters, but any Hillary supporter who left the caucus site was treated as though they were still there for the purposes of the recount. Thus, artificial inflation of her numbers occurred unless everyone who left was a Bernie delegate, on top of the Hillary campaign surrogate lying to an election official to cover up her (negligent at best, malicious at worst) mistake.

And they left the recount up to a Yea Nay vote, which is just ridiculous.

Syrian rebels are losing Aleppo and perhaps also the war

Syrian rebels battled for their survival in and around Syria’s northern city of Aleppo on Thursday after a blitz of Russian airstrikes helped government loyalists sever a vital supply route and sent a new surge of refugees fleeing toward the border with Turkey.

The Russian-backed onslaught against rebel positions in Aleppo coincided with the failure of peace talks in Geneva, and helped reinforce opposition suspicions that Russia and its Syrian government allies are more interested in securing a military victory over the rebels than negotiating a settlement.

Moreover, the FSA also reaches every instance where an AR-15 platform semi-automatic rifle or LCM might be preferable to handguns or bolt-action rifles–for example hunting, recreational shooting, or competitive marksmanship events, all of which are lawful purposes protected by the Constitution.”

Saudi Arabia "Ready To Send Ground Troops To Syria"

Last month, when Saudi Arabia announced it would be heading (that's heading, not beheading) a 34-nation "anti-terror coalition", everyone who knows anything at all about the Mid-East and about the sectarian divide laughed hysterically.

Why? Because Saudi Arabia is without question the world's number one state sponsor of terror. Riyadh would vehemently deny that charge but when your state religion is Wahhabism it's a bit difficult to explain how it is that you're not contributing to the rise of groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS.

Fortunately for the Saudis, they've got all the oil, which means the world looks the other way while the government racks up an abysmal human rights record and sticks to policies that look like they walked right out of the seventh century.

Depressed Bovine Excrement : Global warming’ blamed for surge in pet depression

FAIL: State Dept's Marie Harf Blames $50 Billion Iran "Bonus" in Nuclear Deal on Treasury Dept Calculation Error

Someone has obviously been studying their common core math.

After Jay Solomon over at the Wall Street Journal pointed out that there was a whopping $50 billion difference in the funds Iran was supposed to get after the sanctions release in the administration’s nuclear deal and what Iran is claiming to have, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf took to Twitter to "clarify" to him publicly that it was the Treasury Department's fault... as if that somehow makes the government look less ridiculously inept.

What voters know about Hillary Clinton: She's a crook

This has not been a good week for Hillary Clinton.

She prevailed over Sen. Bernie Sanders in the Iowa Democratic presidential caucuses by less than four tenths of one percent of all votes cast, after having led him in polls in Iowa at one time by 40 percentage points.

In her statement to supporters, standing in front of her gaunt and listless looking husband, she was not able to mouth the word “victory” or any of its standard variants. She could barely hide her contempt for the Iowa Democrats who disserted her.

Sanders isn’t even a Democrat. According to official Senate records, he is an “Independent Socialist” who votes to organize the Senate with the Democrats, and sits on the Senate floor with them.

Clinton, of course, is the heiress to the mightiest Democratic political apparatus in the land. Hence the question: What do the Iowa Democrats know that caused thousands of them to flee from her?

They know she is a crook.

‘Something smells in Democratic Party’…

“Too many accounts have arisen of inconsistent counts, untrained and overwhelmed volunteers, confused voters, cramped precinct locations, a lack of voter registration forms and other problems,” the editorial reads. “Too many of us, including members of the Register editorial board who were observing caucuses, saw opportunities for error amid Monday night’s chaos.”
