CrossTalk: Arab Spring Mirage

With the judicial exoneration of Egypt’s former President Mubarak, we are forced to consider the condition of the so-called Arab Spring. Or even ponder if there was even such a thing. And whether Washington actually prefers dictators and monarchs in the region, notes Peter Lavelle.

CrossTalking with David Ottaway, Wael Eskandar and Hafsa Kara-Mustapha.

Interesting that they are only just beginning to wake up to the farce. Its like calling the Kiev coup a revolution. This is what analyst Soraya Sepahpour-Ulrich told RT almost four years ago about the uprisings “wrong to call it Arab Spring, that was a term used by Western journalists to justify the Iraq invasion and imply ‘democracy’ would spread!”

Videos show casual brutality of Israeli army in Hebron

Two videos published by Christian Peacemaker Teams show the casual brutality faced by the people of the Palestinian city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank.

The first video, above, shows what happened when a group of Palestinians waving flags attempted to stage a peaceful protest against the closure of “Checkpoint 56” on 29 November.

As Christian Peacemaker Teams explains in a 4 December release, the protestors were immediately met by “a torrent of tear gas and sound grenades rained down from Israeli forces, who were occupying rooftops” above the Bab al-Zawiya neighborhood.

Checkpoint 56 stands between the Bab al-Zawiya and Tel Rumeida districts and leads on to a small section of Shuhada Street. Palestinians are banned from most of the street, once a bustling center of city life, for the benefit of Israeli settlers.

Strikes on Gaza high-rises were 'war crimes'

Israeli airstrikes on four multi-storey buildings towards the end of its 50-day military assault on Gaza this summer amounted to war crimes, rights group Amnesty International has said.

Israel’s worst enemy is Netanyahu

Netanyahu has a siege mentality. He has lived his life in survival mode premised on Jews as eternal victims, which is why in almost all of his major speeches he refers to the Holocaust. Israel is a nuclear-armed country with the most powerful army in the region and is under the protection of the superpower. His attempts to paint Jews as victims are cynical; they are nothing more than a pretext to perpetuate Israel’s brutal occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem citing the Palestinians as an existential threat.

Why Gaza Is the Real-World Set for 'The Hunger Games'

I could have never imagined myself drawing parallels between my refugee camp, Nuseirat, in the Gaza Strip, its heroic people, and a Hollywood movie; the struggle of my people is too sacred for that. But I couldn't help it as I watched the latest from The Hunger Games franchise, Mockingjay.

A feeling of anger initially overwhelmed me when I saw the districts destroyed by the heartless rulers of the Capitol. As I watched the movie, not only resistance of Palestine, but particularly that of Gaza, was on my mind.

BETHLEHEM LIGHTS UP FOR CHRISTMAS

We just had the Christmas tree lighting in the Manger Square, Bethlehem and it was beautiful. It was appropriate to reflect on challenges and
opportunities in the ongoing struggle. If we believe that Jesus brought the message of peace, the tumult in his era seems remarkably similar yo this era of occupation, repression, religious zealotry, corrupt leaders etc.

Yet, 2014 could be summed up as the year in which the parameters of the
struggle where made much clearer. It is a struggle between the elite rich who have increasingly pushed for more police and military to protect their gains and suppress the 99.9% of the world that is suffering. From Ferguson to Gaza to Kobani, the struggle continues.

Israel boycott movement survives challenge

Members of the American Anthropological Association have soundly defeated a proposed resolution opposing the academic boycott of Israel, paving the way for continued conversation on the topic and the possibility that a pro-boycott measure will be presented for a vote at the business meeting next year.

About 700 anthropologists showed up to vote at the association’s annual business meeting on Friday, prompting organisers to open the wall between two ballrooms to accommodate the crowd. Just 52 members voted in favour of the resolution opposing the academic boycott, so few that conference organisers did not count the number of “no” votes (a vote to end debate and put the resolution to a vote had passed by a 653-27 margin just minutes earlier).

EVEN A FAKE IMAGE CAN BE AN INSPIRATION FOR PEACE

One week into Israel’s war with Gaza this past summer, the Barbadian-born singer Rihanna tweeted a photo of an Israeli boy and a Palestinian boy with their arms around each other facing away from the camera: “Let’s pray for peace and a swift end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict!” she wrote. “Is there any hope?….”

The photo was posted as damage control after the pop star tweeted — and then eight minutes later deleted — the hashtag #FreePalestine. That initial tweet provoked an immediate barrage from Israel advocates on Twitter asking if she supported Hamas. It’s not clear to what degree the photo mollified her critics. But what Rihanna didn’t know was that the photo is actually a fake.

ISRAEL IS KILLING THE FAMILY OF JESUS

So here is the deal. Some of the people walking around Palestine, Gaza, and the West Bank are blood relatives of Jesus. Distant blood relatives, but still blood relatives. Given 2000 years, it is possible that the vast majority of present day Palestinians are remote relatives of Jesus.

Israel is killing them.

And YOU are paying for it, which means you share the guilt. YOU are paying for the weapons used to kill the modern day family of Jesus. The moment you sign that 1040 form, you sign a confession, admitting before all the world that you are an accessory in the murder.

Think you are going to get into heaven after an insult like that?

Webmaster's Commentary:

By using your money to buy weapons for Israel's war crimes, the US Government has made you all accessories to those war crimes. And you cannot get off the hook by saying, "I am only obeying the government." The Nuremberg trials at the end of WW2 established the principle that simply following the orders of your superiors does not exonerate you of guilt. Only by openly opposing Israel's war crimes will history regard you as blameless for what is being done to Gaza.

Netanyahu’s ‘Jewish state’ bill would be a crippling blow to Israel

Israelis will soon face a primordial decision respecting the future of their country: whether to define Israel as a supra-national state which accords primary rights, both in law and in fact, based solely on Jewish identity. The thrust of the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “nation-state bill” effectively discards the long-held (if imperfectly observed) legal assertion that all Israelis, including that country’s Arab citizens, enjoy equality under the law. If passed, it would become part of Israel’s constitution.

According to Safa, the land which is being confiscated is located along the Separation Wall. The agency believes that it will be used to widen the Wall.

Arabs Are the Michael Browns of Israel

The shooting took place in early November and was captured on video. The assailant, whose skin shade was different from the cops’, was carrying what has been described by the police as a knife, which he used to bang on the window of a parked police car. After a few moments, four officers exited the vehicle, causing the man to turn and walk away quickly. As can be seen in the video, one police officer then shot the man several times in the back. After the shooting, the police dragged the man’s limp body from the street to the police vehicle. He died a short time later.

Scene from an American city? Nope. Try Israel. The victim was 22-year-old Khayr al-Din Hamdan, an Arab-Israeli citizen, and the shooting by Israeli security forces took place in the northern Israeli city of Kafr Kanna. But it sounds disturbingly like too many incidents that happen in America, and in the past week or two, a number of observers have made the comparison.

THREE MEN AND A NEGRO ARRESTED YESTERDAY

I have been reminded of those headlines recently while reading about ‘Palestinian terrorists’ in the Israeli press. I wrote about this yesterday, but the situation is getting worse as the days go by.

Just as the Negro is now called a man, so will the Arab from Palestine be called a Palestinian ... WHEN HE IS NOT ACCUSED OF A CRIME!

Types With Tired Fingers

I have recently had a religious epiphany. I have decided to convert to the Sun Dance faith. This is a religion practiced by many of the North American native people for thousands of years. It's easy to be a Sun Dancer; you can see the Sun! That's a definite plus compared to religions relying on that imaginary playmate in the sky.

I have long felt a kinship with my newly adopted religion and people as you can see in this photo of myself and my wife from the early 1990s.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Back in 800 AD, a bunch of Central Asian Khazars converted to Judaism, and now because they have adopted the religion of the ancient Hebrews claim a higher right to the lands of Palestine than the Palestinians who have been there for two thousand years.

Israel razes Palestinian shops in E. Jerusalem

Israeli army bulldozers on Wednesday demolished a Palestinian building and 20 commercial shops in occupied East Jerusalem on claims that they had been built without permission.

"Four bulldozers backed by 300 Israeli troops forced their way into the Shuafat refugee camp early this morning and began demolishing 20 shops and one building," Mohamed Masalmeh, head of the refugee camp's popular committee, told The Anadolu Agency.

He said that Israeli forces had prevented anyone from approaching the area since early morning.

Owned by the al-Dijani family, the demolished properties had sat on 800 square meters of land.

"The targeted shops had included coffee shops, car repair shops, chicken butcheries, vegetable stores, supermarkets and many more," he said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

East Jerusalem was never supposed to be a part of Israel and most of the buildings were built before Israel had any authority to issue permits. But Israel declares these buildings illegal and destroys them, claiming it is all the letter of the law. But remember, everything the Nazis did was the letter of law as well. Did that make it right?

The Palestinians Have Managed to Topple Another Israeli Government

Israel’s didn’t perform well in the last round of violence. The IDF didn’t achieve a single military objective. After a few days, its forces withdrew, humiliated and exhausted. MURDER, LIES AND VIDEOTAPE

How appropriate it was that on Israel TV last night a movie was aired, Sex, Lies and Videotape … nothing to do with this post aside from the name itself.

But as it stands, a videotape was the main evidence used yesterday to indicted an Israeli Border Policeman of manslaughter in a Jerusalem Court.

Ran Abu Dolah, a Druze IDF soldier who fought during Operation Protective Edge and was injured by a Hamas anti-tank missile, decided to head over to a pub in northern Israel with another Druze friend over the weekend, but was denied entry into the establishment. JERUSALEM; THE UNHOLIEST CITY IN THE UNHOLY LAND

IN its long and checkered history, Jerusalem has been occupied by dozens of conquerors.

Babylonians and Persians, Greeks and Romans, Mamluks and Turks, Britons and Jordanians – to mention just a few.

The latest occupier is Israel, which conquered and annexed Jerusalem in 1967.

(I could have written “East Jerusalem” – but all of historical Jerusalem is in today’s East Jerusalem. All the other parts were built in the last 200 years by Zionist settlers, or are surrounding Arab villages which were arbitrarily joined to the huge area that is now called Jerusalem after its occupation.)

Life sentences restored for two Palestinian prisoners released in Shalit deal

The Israeli authorities restored the previous life sentences issued against two Palestinian prisoners who had been released as a part of the Shalit deal, Felesteen Online news reported on Friday.

One prisoner is from Tulkarem and the other Nablus, in the occupied West Bank.

According to Felesteen Online, the director of the Ahrar Centre for Prisoners Studies and Human Rights, Fuad Al-Khafsh, announced that the Israeli authorities had re-issued the life sentences on the two released prisoners, Ashraf Al-Wawi from Tulkarem and Hamza Abu Arkoub from Nablus.

One Palestinian child has been killed by Israel every 3 days for the past 13 years

Official statistics from the Ministry of Information in Ramallah have revealed that 1,518 Palestinian children were killed by Israel's occupation forces from the outbreak of the second Intifada in September 2000 up to April 2013. That's the equivalent of one Palestinian child killed by Israel every 3 days for almost 13 years. The ministry added that the number of children injured by the Israelis since the start of the Second Intifada against Israel's occupation has now reached 6,000.

"The International Day for the Protection of Children is on June 1," said a spokesman, "but Palestinian children are still subject to attacks by the Israelis and Jewish settlers on an almost daily basis."

Is holocaust orthodoxy paving the way to genocide in Palestine?

But what does Holocaust denial really mean? Begin with the word Holocaust. The Holocaust2 (spelled with a capital H) refers to the killing of six million Jews by the Nazis during World War II. It is supposed to be the German’s “Final Solution” to the Jewish problem. Much of the systematic extermination was to have taken place in concentration camps by shooting, gassing, and burning alive innocent Jewish victims of the Third Reich.

People like Germar Rudolf, Ernst Zundel, and Bishop Williamson who do not believe this account and who dare to say so in public are reviled as bigots, anti-Semites, racists, and worse. Their alternate historical scenarios are not termed simply revisionist, but are demeaned as Holocaust denial. Rudolf and Zundel were shipped to Germany where they were tried, convicted, and sentenced to three and five years, respectively. Williamson may not be far behind.

Abbas threatens to dissolve Palestinian Authority

Sources close to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas have said that the politician asked the German Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to pass along a serious message to Israel about his intention to dissolve the Palestinian Authority. Abbas allegedly made this statement during a meeting between the two politicians a few days ago in Ramallah.

Al-Quds newspaper quoted Palestinian saying, "President Mahmoud Abbas has grown quite angry at Israel's continued escalations and provocations in the West Bank and Jerusalem. Zionist violence escalates in Occupied Palestine

it is downright disingenuous and simply plain wrong to define an “Israeli” settler as a civilian and by extension a victim of “terror”. The Zionist project from its very inception in the 19th century, brought Jewish immigrants from all over the world into Palestine in order to violently seize Palestinian land and dispossess the indigenous Palestinians so that “Israel” could come into being. The mere length of time that a squatter has resided on land that does not belong to him can never transform a bogus claim into a right. “Israel” is an illegitimate entity and “Israeli” is a manufactured label meant to give supremacist settlers a national identity.

The attack on a synagogue in Jerusalem today took place in Har Nof, a Jewish neighborhood built over the ruins of Deir Yassin, a Palestinian village whose inhabitants were wiped out on April 9, 1948. The Deir Yassin Massacre delivered a clear message to the Palestinian people. The Jewish militias were driven by genocidal inclinations and the Arabs better run for their lives. The attack, the deadliest in Jerusalem in years, is bound to ratchet up fears of sustained violence in the city, already on edge amid soaring tensions over a contested holy site.

The Decision by the International Criminal Court (ICC) not to Prosecute Israel for War crimes Questions its own Viability

The decision this week by the ICC not to investigate the point-blank killing, by Israeli commandos, of nine unarmed Turkish passengers on board the Mavi Marmara aid vessel in 2010, although there was a ‘reasonable basis’ to believe that Israel had committed a war crime in its maritime attack upon civilians, seems indefensible.

The decision not to prosecute will inevitably raise questions about the integrity and impartiality of the ICC in the face of political pressure by the global Israel lobby that already operates in Washington, London and Brussels.

The reason given by the ICC chief prosecutor that the court is more concerned with larger scale incidents, ignores the fact that this attack upon civilian passengers in international waters was part of a six year campaign by the Israeli government to effect an illegal regime change in Gaza by means of a blockade of essential goods to 1.8 million Palestinian Arabs – that still continues today.

“Civility”: Israel Lobby’s New Weapon Against Free Speech on US Campuses

As I was driving through Indiana en route to Michigan this weekend, I saw this billboard for a local sheriff’s election campaign. There, above the uniformed police officer with his military-style crew cut, is the slogan “Return to Civility.”

It seemed the perfect metaphor for what “civility” has come to mean on US campuses: the forceful policing, at the behest of Israel lobby groups, of any discourse or activism critical of Israel.

In the wake of Israel’s latest Gaza massacre, the civility police are cracking down hard. Most notoriously, administrators and trustees at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have used the excuse of “civility” to fire Steven Salaita for his strong criticisms of, among other things, Israel’s slaughter of hundreds of children in Gaza.

But civility crackdowns are now breaking out across the country.

Anyone who wants to track the progress Israel has made on the steep slope toward fanaticism, religiosity and backwardness must examine its relationship to the Temple Mount. Anyone who insists on labeling Israel a modern Western country can’t ignore the extraordinary change that has taken place in recent years. And anyone who still thinks this is a nonreligious society must heed the dark and insane forces that motivate it.

AMERICAN LABOUR BLOCKS THE BOATS FOR PALESTINE

This August, during five days and four nights of demonstrations at the Port of Oakland, a diverse group of pro-Palestine and social justice activists under the banner of the Block the Boat coalition picketed several berths where the Israeli cargo ship Zim Piraeus attempted to dock. Activists returned to the port whenever workers were dispatched to unload it—in some cases in the middle of the night. Their numbers, which fluctuated between dozens and thousands, were not always sufficient to physically block all entrances to the vessel. Yet the action succeeded due to the support of Oakland’s longshoremen, members of the International Longshore Workers Union (ILWU) Local 10, who refused to cross the community picket lines. Even when police surrounded and split protestors on multiple occasions, workers refused to proceed and unload the ship. The ship eventually left port, unable to unload most of its cargo.

Violence spreads across Israel after shooting in Galilee

Months of simmering violence between Israelis and Palestinians in East Jerusalem spread to Israeli Arab towns this weekend after police shot and killed a 22-year-old man in the Galilee town of Kufr Kana, apparently as he was running away.

In their original statements about the death on Friday night police said Kheir Hamdan was shot when he tried to stab an officer during an attempt to arrest him for allegedly throwing a stun grenade in the town, near Nazareth.

However, CCTV footage of the shooting shows Hamdan tried to strike a police car several times with an object in his hand – allegedly the knife – but officers were inside, with Hamdan posing no immediate threat to them. When a police officer opens the door, Hamdan is seen retreating. It is at this point he is shot.

Irony: Yasser Arafat's memorial canceled due to terrorist threats in Gaza

A memorial and rally in Gaza planned for Tuesday to honor the anniversary of the death of the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was canceled due to threats of terrorist attacks by Islamists, the Middle East news media reported on Sunday. Arafat's death 10-years ago remains a mystery with some saying he died of natural causes while others claim he was poisoned by his enemies the "Zionists" using polonium.

Israel to confiscate 3,200 acres of Palestinian land near Jerusalem

Israeli authorities have delivered orders to the village of Beit Iksa north of Jerusalem ordering the confiscation of 12,852 dunums (3,176 acres) of Palestinian land, locals said on Saturday.

Locals told Ma’an that soldiers deployed at the military checkpoint at the entrance to the village delivered confiscation orders signed by the Israeli military commander in the West Bank Nitzan Alon that gave them until Dec. 31, 2017 to remain on their land.

Villagers said that soldiers informed them that an official from the Israeli military liaison would arrive on Monday to specify which lands would be confiscated, adding that the lands confiscated would be used for “military purposes.”

The third intifada is here

Periodic situation evaluations of the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) highest command echelons warned that the harsh economic situation, lack of a diplomatic horizon and overall feeling of frustration and that there is no way out are likely to be the catalysts. Shin Bet assessments disseminated in 2013 even showed worrisome data regarding growing unrest in the West Bank, and painted the picture of the lone terrorist going out on his own to carry out an attack without the backing of organizational infrastructure. These assessments even led to closer security cooperation between Israel and the Palestinian Authority with the goal of detecting and thwarting the first signs of terrorist organization if and when they appear on the ground.

But apparently the Israeli security system didn't imagine that the third intifada it had anticipated, warned against and prepared for would erupt specifically in Jerusalem, and with such intensity.

The clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian citizens, and protest demonstrations quickly escalated since Wednesday's Israeli attack of the building of the Aqsa mosque compound, and Ibrahim Akkari's run over, who was immediately shot in Jerusalem.

Clashes in Jerusalem and the West Bank have been successive, after Akkari's funeral in Jerusalem, which Israeli occupation allowed only 35 members of his family to attend.

The funeral limitation aggravated the clashes all over Jerusalem neighborhoods, where two Palestinian citizens were injured by Israeli bullets and one Israeli border guard was injured of stone throwing in Shu'fat refugee camp south occupied Jerusalem.

Clashes took place in Issawiya, Hizma and Al-Toor neighborhoods south Jerusalem, where Palestinians utilized fireworks and stones to defend themselves.

How 'peace envoy' Tony Blair enables Israeli raids in illegally occupied West Bank

WORDS CAN lose their meaning when Tony Blair speaks. Collecting his “philanthropist of the year” award from GQ magazine, Blair recently said he could feel the “pulse of progress beating a little harder.”

Judging by the pronouncements he has made as a Middle East “peace envoy,” Blair’s definition of “progress” appears different from the standard one.

In 2010, Blair hailed a tiny easing of Israel’s siege on Gaza as a “significant change.” The following year he praised Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian dictator who facilitated that siege, as a “force for good.”

And earlier this month, Blair claimed that John Kerry was “absolutely tireless” in his efforts to promote peace, conveniently forgetting that the US secretary of state had publicly endorsed Israel’s attack on Gaza during the summer.

Amnesty: Israel committed war crimes in Gaza Strip

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM: Amnesty International Wednesday accused Israel of committing war crimes during the war in the Gaza Strip this summer, saying it displayed “callous indifference” in attacks on family homes in the densely populated coastal area.

The Gaza war left more than 2,100 Palestinians dead, including many civilians according to Palestinian and U.N. officials. Israel says the number of militants killed was much higher and accuses Hamas of using civilians as human shields. On the Israeli side, 66 soldiers and six civilians were killed.

Amnesty said in a report that “Israeli forces killed scores of Palestinian civilians in attacks targeting houses full of families, which in some cases have amounted to war crimes.”

Dozens of Israeli soldiers invaded, on Wednesday morning, the grounds of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem, assaulted the worshipers with concussion grenades, gas bombs and rubber-coated metal bullets, and invaded the main mosque within the compound.

The Maan News Agency said dozens of soldiers invaded the yards of the mosque through the al-Magharba Gate and the Chain Gate (Bab as-Silsila) and assaulted dozens of worshipers who managed to reach the mosque yards.

Sheikh Azzam al-Khatib, head of the Islamic Waqf and Endowment in Jerusalem, stated that dozens of soldiers invaded the al-Qibli mosque while heavily armed.

Repeated failures compound Netanyahu’s Al-Aqsa predicament

The recent closure of the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem by the Israeli government constitutes yet more evidence that peace between Israel and the Palestinians has never been more distant.

The Al-Aqsa mosque, located in Jerusalem’s Old City, is the third holiest site in Islam. It sits within an enclosed compound known as the Noble Sanctuary, which also includes the Dome of the Rock, an Islamic shrine built on the site of the sacred stone which is believed to mark the place from where the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven. The Dome of the Rock is also believed by Jewish scholars to be the location of the first and second temples, both of which were destroyed – the first by the Babylonians in 586 BCE, the second by the Romans in 70 CE. Within Judaism the entire area, including Al-Aqsa, is known as Temple Mount and is equally as sacred.

Israeli settlements: 'Unfortunate' or illegal?

Answering a question on November 3 about Israel's new construction plans in East Jerusalem, the US State Department spokeswoman said they were "unfortunate". Why didn't she say "illegal"?

There is pretty much a consensus among international lawyers, except in Israel, that the Israeli settlements in the occupied territories including East Jerusalem are illegal. The basis for this is article 49 of the fourth Geneva Convention adopted in 1949: "The Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies."

Israel, it appears, has no more right to build settlements than the UK or the US would have had to build British or American settlements in Iraq after the 2003 war.

89 Palestine families wiped out by Israel’s Gaza campaign

At least 89 entire families have been killed in Gaza since Israel started its military campaign, Palestinian health officials said. The Judeh family, a woman and her four children, died after an airstrike hit their house reportedly without warning.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Israel is still justifying this latest war crime on the basis of the three murdered teenagers in the West Bank by the "terrorist" group HAMAS, even though the local police in that area said there was no evidence to link the murders to HAMAS. But let us look at another incident to put this in context. Back in 2001, the leader of the Jewish Defense League (deemed a terrorist group by the FBI), Irv Rubin, was caught plotting to blow up a mosque in Culver City and assassinate Congressman Daryl Issa. The US did NOT proceed to bomb all of Israel, they simply arrested Irv Rubin and threw him into prison where he was "suicided" before he could testify at his trial as to the sources of his funding and weapons.

9/11 Was NATO’s License to Expand Globally

The 9/11 attacks on the United States undoubtedly benefited a number of actors, including the American military-intelligence complex, Israel, and most definitely, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The Cold War-era, the area of responsibility for which had long been confined to Europe and North America, used the provisions of Article 5 of the NATO Charter – which states that an attack on one member is an attack on all – to extend NATO’s power deep into Eurasia, particularly in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Kyrgyzstan.

After engaging in out-of-area invasions and occupations of Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Libya, and Syria and, again in Iraq, against the «Islamic State,» the «North Atlantic» military bloc has transformed itself from a Cold War defensive alliance into a global offensive axis of nations that acts with or without United Nations authorization.

Sweden officially recognizes Palestinian state, Israel recalls ambassador

Sweden has recognized the occupied state of Palestine officially, according to its foreign ministry. The Scandinavian has become the first West-European EU state to recognize the territories. Israel has recalled its ambassador in Sweden in protest.

The news follows an earlier hint by Prime Minister Stefan Lovfen in his Social Democrat manifesto, during his inaugural address in October, that this would happen. The idea was quickly met with criticism from the United States and Israel.

"Our decision comes at a critical time because over the last year we have seen how the peace talks have stalled, how decisions over new settlements on occupied Palestinian land have complicated a two-state solution and how violence has returned to Gaza," Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom told reporters.

"By making our decision we want to bring a new dynamic to the stalled peace process."
