None of this has deterred the Israelis, though, from speaking out against the alleged ambitions of others. The Israelis are not at all embarrassed that Tehran is a signatory to the NPT and they are not; nor does it bother them that no one thinks the Islamic Republic has nuclear weapons, while the Jewish state is estimated by experts to possess something in the order of 200-300 warheads, not to mention a variety of air-, land- and sea-based delivery systems.

IOWA CITY, Ia. – Leaders of the Veterans Affairs hospital here plan to spend $6.5 million to combat a potentially deadly bacteria that has been found in the facility's water pipes, but they have not informed patients about the problem.

A mentally-ill inmate in the US state of North Carolina, who was held in solitary confinement for 35 days, died of dehydration, according to an autopsy report.

Michael Anthony Kerr, who had schizophrenia, died of thirst in the back of a van on March 12 while being transported from his prison to a mental hospital, public records released to The Associated Press on Thursday show.

International and Turkish activists declared the intention to send a second flotilla to break the siege on Gaza under the name of Freedom Flotilla 2.

The first Freedom Flotilla was attacked at sea before reaching Gaza Strip by Israeli navy forces killing ten Turkish nationals. Activists from all over the world declared in Istanbul that they have started preparations for a "Freedom Flotilla 2" which will carry humanitarian aid to the besieged Strip.

Hundreds of American protesters, angered by Israel’s recent deadly assault on the Gaza Strip, gathered at the Port of Oakland to block an Israeli ship from unloading its cargo.

Woman Busted for Possession of SpaghettiO’s Sauce May Sue

A Florida woman may pursue legal action against police and prosecutors after she spent more than a month in jail for possession of SpaghettiOs.

Police say they arrested 23-year old Ashley Gabrielle Huff after they found a spoon covered with a suspicious residue inside the car she was riding in.

From the beginning Huff insisted that she wasn’t using, selling, or making methamphetamines.

Medics confirmed the death of at least one person, while 70 more were reported to be injured, NHK reported. Thirty of the injured have been sent to hospital in critical condition, health officials added. One can only hope there were no nuclear power plants in the immediate vicinity of the volcano.

BEIJING -- China has fined the British pharmaceuticals giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) $488.8 million (3 billion Yuan) for a "massive bribery network" to get doctors and hospitals to use its products. For most Americans, the best indicator of a healthy economy is having a job. With many Americans entering older age, the number of those not in the labor force is booming. This ability to ignore a large portion of your population allows the numbers to appear better than they are. But this is for the entire US population. If we look at those 25-54 we find that 1 out of 4 is without a job. This is the prime working years for many Americans. The Great Recession has been a challenge for many working families. The lack of good paying work, weaker benefits, and inflation has dug deep into the pockets of many Americans. When 1 out of 4 Americans in their prime working years is out of work, something else has to give.

The California Drivers Alliance, a coalition backed by oil, agriculture, retail, tourism and other industries has tried valiantly over the last three months--running radio, print and digital ads--to generate a groundswell against the so-called “hidden gas tax” that could act as at least 15 cents a gallon surtax on gas prices starting on January 1. South Australian Judge Wants Total Gun Ban

SOUTH Australia needs a blanket ban on gun ownership in metropolitan areas to save lives and improve public safety, a respected senior SA judge has declared.

In a move that will ignite debate on gun laws, Supreme Court Justice Michael David said the issue of “gun availability’’ had been a recurring theme in a significant number of cases he had presided over during his 18 years on the District and Supreme Court benches.

Forced dependency: Blue Cross Blue Shield drops HMO plans in 11 counties

DURHAM -- Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina will drop its Blue Medicare HMO standard and Blue Medicare HMO Enhanced plan products in 11 North Carolina counties in 2015, affecting 50,000 beneficiaries statewide.

The counties include: Alamance, Davidson, Forsyth, Iredell, Rowan, Stokes, Surry, Wake, Wilkes and Yadkin, which makes up about one-third of BCBSNC's Medicare Advantage population, said Michelle Douglas, public relations manager for BCBSNC.

Under HMO plans, beneficiaries generally must get care from within the plan's network as opposed to PPO plans, which contracts with a network of preferred providers to which the beneficiary can choose.

Mary Snider, a BCBSNC customer who lives in Davidson County, said she received a letter this week that said her Blue Medicare HMO enhanced coverage would no longer be available.

Obamacare Website Costs Balloon to $2 Billion

It’s been about a year since Obamacare’s marketplace launched for the first time. After all of the technical glitches, massive repair efforts and major contractor shake ups, the government has struggled to nail down exactly how much it has spent on the website.

In a federal audit released this week, the Health and Human Services Department Inspector General said obtaining financial information on Healthcare.gov was “difficult and time consuming.” The IG even said that it “could not determine the reliability of most of the amounts” that the agencies had provided. The Obama administration’s latest estimates say HealthCare.gov and related costs totaled about $834 million. But a new analysis of federal contracts by Bloomberg estimates that the price tag for Obamacare’s federal enrollment system is actually much higher-- around $2.1 billion.\

'Network glitch' leaves NatWest and RBS customers stranded as they are frozen out of 62,000 cash machines

NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland customers have taken to Twitter to vent their frustration after being left unable to withdraw cash from ATMs today.

Users bombarded the online help service with questions after being given a message reading 'service unavailable' at cash points.

A spokesman for the RBS Group, which owns NatWest, RBS and Ulster Bank, says the issue started at around 10.40am and lasted for three hours, but should now be fixed.

US criticizes Abbas' speech at UN General Assembly

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement on Friday that Mahmud Abbas’ speech, in which he said Israel conducted a “war of genocide” in Gaza, was “offensive”.

Israel unleashed aerial attacks on Gaza in early July and later expanded its military campaign with a ground invasion into the Palestinian territory. Over 2,130 Palestinians lost their lives and some 11,000 were injured.

"Abbas' speech today included offensive characterizations that were deeply disappointing and which we reject," read the statement.

US in 'near continuous' strikes against ISIS in Syria

The U.S.-led coalition widened its airstrikes against ISIS in Syria on Saturday as part of "near continuous" raids against the jihadists.

The targets were said to include ISIS fighters around the mainly Kurdish town of Ain al-Arab where a jihadist advance has sent 160,000 refugees streaming into nearby Turkey.

The coalition also hit ISIS in the central province of Homs for the first time as well as in the town of Minbej, near the western limit of the group's control, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The expanded operations in Syria by Washington and its Arab allies came after three more European governments deployed fighter jets for strikes against ISIS in Iraq, freeing up U.S. air power.

Monsanto GMO wheat contamination discovered in Montana

?Monsanto’s experimental genetically modified wheat has been discovered growing in the second US field in Montana, about a year after the discovery of the company’s unapproved crop growing in Oregon disrupted US wheat exports. The plants were discovered at a test site at Montana State University, where back in 2000-2003 Monsanto was conducting field trials of its wheat, genetically modified to tolerate Roundup herbicide.

Although the government believes the wheat never reached market, it has still opened an investigation into finding the rogue plants at a site that was not supposed to host any tests after 2003, USDA's Department of Agriculture’s Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service announced on Friday. “We’ve now opened an investigation into this regulatory compliance issue,” said Bernadette Juarez, director of investigative and enforcement services for APHIS, adding however that “there are no safety issues with this wheat.”

Pennsylvania priest held on sex tourism charges

PITTSBURGH, PA --A priest accused of traveling to Honduras to engage in sex with children while promoting missionary work with the poor there has been arrested by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

The Rev. Joseph Maurizio Jr., 69, was arrested Thursday and will remain in custody until a hearing Monday before a federal magistrate in Pittsburgh. The judge must decide then whether the priest will remain jailed until he can stand trial.

The Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown said it was "profoundly disturbed by the allegations against Father Maurizio." It said he has not functioned as pastor of Our Lady Queen of Angels Parish since federal authorities searched the parish rectory on Sept. 12.

Liberian doctor finds HIV drug successful on Ebola

LIBERIA (CNN) - In west Africa, doctors are struggling to treat the thousands who are already infected with Ebola. Shortages of almost everything exits inside an Ebola isolation unit in rural Africa.

A worker carries cameras inside where there are sick patients, including children. "In a situation like this I have to use every brain cell to save some people's lives. This is our central supply room,” Dr. Gobee Logan said. For Logan, desperate times call for desperate measures.

While the world waits for a proven Ebola drug, he's experimenting with an HIV drug called lamivudine. "In order for everyone in this unit not to die, I think I need to try this medication,” Logan said.
Four young women - Elizabeth, Susan, Fatu and Massa - came to the unit with Ebola. But they were given the HIV drug. And now they're doing well. They're able to walk around and they'll be discharged soon.
