For Profit Probation Companies Ruin the Lives of the Poor

Every year US courts sentence several hundred thousand misdemeanor offenders to probation that is overseen by private companies who then pass the often steep fees to the probationers themselves, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. Often the poorest people wind up paying the most in fees over time, in what amounts to a discriminatory penalty. And when they can't pay, companies can and do secure their arrest.

Fed: US consumers have decided to ‘hoard money’

One of the great mysteries of the post-financial crisis world is why the U.S. has lacked inflation despite all the money being pumped into the economy. -- The St. Louis Federal Reserve thinks it has the answer: A paper the central bank branch published this week blames the low level of money movement in large part on consumers and their “willingness to hoard money.” The paper also cites the Fed’s own policies as a reason for consumers’ unwillingness to spend..

The Server Needs To Die To Save The Internet

Do we have the Internet we deserve? There’s an argument to say that yes, we absolutely do. Given web users’ general reluctance to pay for content. We are of course, paying. Just not with cold hard cash, but with our privacy — as digital business models rely on gathering and selling intel on their users to make the money to pay (the investors who paid) for the free service.

A UK startup called MaidSafe, based in the small town of Troon in Scotland, reckons the myriad problems with today’s Internet can be linked to a design quirk of its underlying architecture. And that the answer to solving the web’s most perennial issues, such as finding sustainable digital business models for content, safeguarding user data and privacy, and thwarting hacking, malware and overreaching surveillance, is to begin again — with a whole new re-architected Internet.

Dozens of Businesses Move HQs Outside America Under Obama

This process, called inversion, has been occurring more and more often, despite the fascistic suggestion by President Obama that headquartering outside the United States represents a betrayal of God and country. Members of the Obama administration have taken to labeling business inversions a lack of “economic patriotism” – presumably under the assumption that to stay in America, cut jobs, and lose all profits in order to pay higher taxes represents a sort of higher moral value than moving one’s headquarters and continuing to pay millions of workers and reward consumers with better and cheaper products.

Watch: A brief explanation of Libya’s demise

For the casual observer, the crisis in Libya has spun beyond comprehension.

Gone is the simple dichotomy of Muammar Gaddafi versus “the revolutionaries”.

Nor do the equally binary “Islamist versus secularist” or “liberal versus conservative” models fully apply in Libya where there are no “seculars” or real liberals to speak of.

Instead, what we have is numerous factions with different international and domestic connections, varying goals and competing interests. It is a complex picture of Islamists, organised crime, ultra-conservatives and traditionalists.

The video, reproduced courtesy of Middle East Eye, outlines briefly the political turmoil that has wracked Libya since the overthrow of Gaddafi in 2011 and culminated in the seizure and destruction of Tripoli airport by Islamist militias on 23 August 2014.

DOJ Attorneys: Lerner’s Emails Exist, But Here’s Why We Aren’t Turning Them Over

A Department of Justice attorney told a Judicial Watch attorney on Friday that it turns out the federal government backs up all computer records in case something terrible happens in Washington and there’s a catastrophe, so the government can continue operating. And they say it would be too hard to go get Lois Lerner’s emails from that backup system.

So everything we’ve been hearing about scratched hard drives…it’s all been a pack of malarkey. They could get these records, but they don’t want to.

And there’s no such thing as Lois Lerner’s missing emails. It’s all been a big lie. They’ve been lying to the courts, to the American people, to Congress. It’s outrageous.

Did a Second ISIS Militant Kill James Foley? [Major CNN Backpeddling!]

You know it's all theater when film terms, like "continuity," get tossed into CNN's reports like they are everyday terminology. I'm surprised the script supervisor -- uh, I mean reporter -- didn't call the edits exactly what they are -- 'jump cuts.'

Ironically the alleged beheading victim's last name, Foley, is also post-production filmmaking term. (Often times, these idiots think they are being witty when they are just being ignorant to our intelligence, (e.g. "the base" is al Qaeda).

These reporters are acting like first-year slacker film students trying to defend their crappy project, and one of the saddest parts is that they are getting paid for their shoddy work.

Either way -- the fact that CNN is even saying that its evidence suggests at least one person involved is just a voice-actor just discredits the whole video even more. (At least in a real court of law it would.)
