Did the Metropolitan Police send staff to Israel during last year's Gaza assault?

Last November, a post appeared on the blogging platform Medium which claimed that between March 1, 2014 and August 31, 2014 - a period of six months - some 80 employees of London's Metropolitan Police had "travelled to Israel."

This overlaps in part with Israel's unprecedented assault on the Gaza Strip, which lasted from July 8 to August 26. During 'Operation Protective Edge', Israeli armed forces killed some 2,100 Palestinians, including more than 500 children.

US approves $2bn arms sale to Israel despite diplomatic strain

The US State Department and the Pentagon have approved a huge arms deal with Israel consisting of thousands of bombs and missiles worth approximately $1.9bn (€1.71bn), US officials have confirmed.

US rejects nuclear disarmament document over Israel concerns

The United States on Friday blocked a global document aimed at ridding the world of nuclear weapons, saying Egypt and other states tried to "cynically manipulate" the process by setting a deadline for Israel and its neighbors to meet within months on a Middle East zone free of such weapons.

POSTER COMMENT:Israel is not a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and has never publicly declared what is widely considered to be an extensive nuclear weapons program. A conference might force Israel to acknowledge it.
Note: U.S. intelligence has acknowledged that Israel has nuclear weapons.

Israel’s new government 'partly ridiculous, partly terrifying'

Uri Avnery vividly describes the calamity freely chosen by the Israeli Jewish people: the most ultra-right-wing, openly expansionist, anti-democratic, anti-free speech and bigoted government ever elected in Israel.

Israel’s New Justice Minister Expressed Hatred Against All Palestinians

A few days ago, on May 14th, Ms. Ayelet Shaked, who has no training in the law, took office as the new Minister of Justice in Israel, after having been appointed to this high post by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on May 6th.

Among other things, the Ministry of Justice’s responsibilities include legal advice and legislation, the Office of the State Attorney, Civilian Legal Aid, and the Public Defender. The Minister of Justice has considerable discretionary authority, especially because, unlike most nations, Israel has no written constitution. (Orthodox Jews wanted it to be the Torah, so instead there is no constitution at all.)

On 1 July 2014, Ms. Shaked posted an article to facebook, with the following in it, arguing why all Palestinians, including all who live in Israel (she made no distinction as to where a “Palestinian” lives), are members of “the Palestinian people” and that “the Palestinian people” are enemies of the State of Israel, and must therefore be destroyed.

Webmaster's Commentary:

We're talking about Ms. Shaked advocating state sponsored genocide here against all Palestinians.

She is very much an interesting choice on the part of Netanyahu, and a terrifying window on his mindset.

Becoming a Global Pariah - Israel on the Run

These are desperate times for Israel. While Prime Murder Benjamin Netanyahu forms a new government with people who have said that Palestinians are not human, and who have openly called for genocide against them, he and they continue to talk about their security concerns, how the Israeli army is the most moral in the world, etc., etc. Yet beyond the ivory towers in which they have ensconced themselves, few people are buying the tattered goods they are selling.

Let’s look at a few examples.

WHERE ARE THE WOMEN IN THE NEW ISRAELI GOVERNMENT?

Once again the ultra-‘orthodox’ removed the faces of the women, this time, in Netanyahu’s Cabinet ….

Female ministers? That’s immodest: Ultra-Orthodox website Behadrei Haredim has blurred the faces of the Israeli government’s new female members in the traditional picture at the President’s Residence due to the haredi practice not to publish women’s pictures for “modesty” reasons.

US, Israel duplicity over the Iran nuclear deal

As the US intensifies its efforts to conclude a nuclear deal with Iran, it is also seeking to appease Israel by promising further military assistance to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government in return for a retreat from the vociferous opposition to the framework.

According to the Times of Israel, Israel and the US are holding preliminary discussions for a "compensation package" that would include an increase in the number of F-35 fighter jets supplied by the US to Israel, as well as additional batteries for the Iron Dome, assistance for the Arrow 3 missile system and the purchasing of technology for intelligence gathering.

Last Sunday, Netanyahu declared: "It is both necessary and possible to achieve a better deal because extremists cannot be allowed to achieve their aims, not in Iran, not in Yemen and not in Jerusalem."

Is being a critic of Israeli state policies the same as being an anti-Semite?

Is being a critic of Israeli state policies actually the same as being an anti-Semite? If every time one voices a criticism of Israel one is acting as an anti-Semite, and if making an anti-Semitic statement is prohibited by the State Department, then ardent supporters of Israeli state policies have won a huge victory — they have essentially made Israel immune from criticism, and made anyone even thinking about raising a serious concern about Israel think twice about just how (or even if) to voice that point of view. But that victory is based on false reasoning, if not a lie.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If criticism of Israel's government is anti-semitism, then criticism of the Nazis is anti-Germanism. Carried through to its logical conclusion, shall we declare all criticism of the US Government, even though well deserved, anti-American and therefore subject to silencing? The First Amendment was written on the principle that people have a right to criticize bad government, even their own.

I was thinking how humanity could descend to such barbarity around the world. How could African migrants risk their lives to leave countries wrecked psychologically and economically by colonial Europeans to seek to arrive in the same continent that subjugated them? How could Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims be slaughtered in the thousands by the majority Buddhists and surviving people end up in boats and sent back to starve and die at sea rejected by nearby countries including countries like Indonesia with Muslim majorities? How could relatives of Jewish holocaust survivors engage in racism and ethnic cleansing for native Palestinians while relatives of Armenian holocaust survivors lead amazingly rich productive caring lives? How could a very wealthy country like “Saudi Arabia” (the quotes are needed because it is an imposed name for a country stolen by the Saud Family) spend billions to support the US/Israeli agenda of destruction and mayhem in countries like Yemen and Syria?

Illinois House Passes Bill to Stop BDS Campaign Against Israel

Webmaster's Commentary:

Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive!

The Citizens United decision granted corporations legal personhood in regard to the right of Free Speech under the First Amendment. The application of financial pressure by the pensions abridges that right. Hence the Illinois Bill is unconstitutional and under the Supreme Court Ruling Marbury vs Madison, automatically null and void.

Why Israel Should Not Exist

The creation of a Jewish state in the middle of the Arab world not only represents the continuation of European colonialism in Palestine, it has also consisted of the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and the establishment of an apartheid system by a rogue nation that has repeatedly violated international law. Given this reality, and the fact that Palestine is the Holy Land of three religions, the only just solution to the Zionist project of the Israeli state and its Western backers is the establishment of a single country: a democratic secular state of Palestine in which Jews, Arabs and Christians all have equal rights.

Par For the Course - New York Times Coverage Follows Narrative of Israeli State Power

The New York Times ran two very different stories recently related to Israel. An analysis of the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement titled “Campus Debates on Israel Drive a Wedge Between Jews and Minorities,” portrays the nonviolent campaign to hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law as a cause of tensions between ethnic groups. Several days later, the Gray Lady printed “Israel Says Hezbollah Positions Put Lebanese at Risk,” uncritically repeating Israeli propaganda justifying a future violent, illegal invasion that would likely kill thousands of civilians.

Has the BDS Movement been hijacked by Liberal Zionists?

Palestinian civil society thinks that calling for “Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions” (BDS) represents a creative breakthrough to shake off the burden of Israel’s occupation regime in historic Palestine. Historically, resistance to Zionist intrusion into Palestine can be traced back to the mid-1920s. So far, however, all strategies have failed both before and after the establishment of the State of Israel.

Nakba and the Question of “Palestinian Strategy”

What makes the Nakba a particularly poignant and painful experience is the fact that it has never truly concluded. The original 750,000 who were removed or forced to flee their historical homeland have morphed to over five million, and those who became internally displaced in their own Palestinian homeland, later renamed the State of Israel, continue to fight for basic rights. This makes the Nakba a present political event, granted its historical origins.

It is encouraging to read that Ludwig Watzal, my prime detractor in Germany, has now fully embraced my criticism of Jewish liberals and the Jewish Left. Watzal now admits that the BDS Movement has been hijacked by Liberal Zionists.

Just a few years ago, Watzal labelled me a racist and an ‘anti-Semite’ for suggesting in “The Wandering Who” that the Jewish Left operates as a controlled opposition apparatus. Watzal’s review of The Wandering Who complained that: “The book is very well written, which make its harmful and racist theses more dangerous.” His review also said, Atzmon’s “hatred is directed not only against the Zionists, but above all against Jewish Left, left anti-Zionists and those who oppose the Israeli government policy as Jews.”

The U.S. is at last facing the neocon captivity

The best thing about this political moment in the U.S. (if not for the good people of Iraq) is that the rise of ISIS and the Republican candidates’ embrace of the Iraq war is posing that deep and permanent question to the American public, Why did we invade Iraq?

Last night Chris Matthews asked that question again and David Corn said it was about the neoconservative desire to protect Israel.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Wars are never fought for just one reason. The US was opposed to Iraq's selling their oil for the Euro. But there is no question that Israel wanted to smash a regional power that threatened their dominance, and absent that support and the copious amounts of fake evidence about Saddam's nuclear weapons, the US might have sought a peaceful resolution to the economic problems.

An anti-Zionist, on the other hand, is opposed to that sector of the Jewish population who see it as their God-given right to establish a Jewish state in the Holy Land at the expense of the Palestinian people who have lived there for two thousand years.

Report: Saudi Arabia in talks to purchase Pakistani nuclear weapons

Saudi Arabia has reportedly held talks with Pakistan for the purchase of nuclear weapons amid the ongoing nuclear negotiations between world powers and Iran, according to a US senior official who spoke with The Sunday Times.

Tensions in the region have escalated in light of the framework agreement the United States and the other world powers have made with the Islamic Republic, with Saudi Arabia increasingly concerned with the repercussions of a deal that may see the easing of sanctions leaving Iran more legroom to continue developing weapons of mass destruction.

Israel says Iran violated sanctions by purchasing aircraft

A senior Israeli official took a swipe at Washington on Tuesday over Iran's purchase of second-hand civilian aircraft, saying the acquisition violated U.S. sanctions and went ahead despite a tip-off from Israel.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Dear Israel.

Stop with all the whining already! Go polish your nuclear weapons or something and stop abusing our ears!

Just shut up. SHUT THE HELL UP!

Reader comment: Excuse me, but it wasn't Iran who violated the sanctions, it was the people who SOLD those aircraft to Iran who violated sanctions..

Minor, yet important distinction.

BEX ALERT - It’s time to give Israel the means to take out Iranian nukes

The negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program have engendered furious debate in Washington and in capitals across the world. But there are steps outside of the nuclear talks that President Obama can take to help ensure that the United States and its allies are stronger and more secure the day after a deal than they were the day before. One such step would be to provide Israel with GBU-57 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs (known as the Massive Ordnance Penetrators, or MOPs) and the means to carry them, in a quantity sufficient to destroy Iran’s most deeply buried nuclear sites.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There is no guarantee that Israel will not go ahead and use those weapons against Iran's civilian infrastructure, even in the absence of actual nuclear weapons. Iran has not initiated a war of conquest against another country in over 200 years. These days Israel cannot seem to go 3 months without attacking someone else. Neither can the US.

It should be remembered that Israel was at the forefront of claims that Iraq had nuclear weapons, and bombed Iraq's nuclear power plant at Osirak in 1981, then cheered the US on for the invasion of 2003. Today even the staunchest warhawk has had to admit that Iraq did not have nuclear weapons nor were they building any, and post-invasion inspections of the ruins at Osirak found nothing but a power station.

So now you want to give Israel the ability to repeat the Osirak mistake at Bushehr and shower yet another innocent civilian population with radioactivity?

New York Times sells Israel’s next war

How hard is it for the Israeli military to launch an unprovoked war with its neighbor by casting itself as a victim of barbarianism, rallying international support and even apologizing in advance and exonerating itself for killing innocent civilians? It seems it only takes one phone call to the New York Times.

That’s right, the world’s most powerful newspaper has just published an article wholly inspired and almost entirely narrated by the unverifiable and belligerent claims of Israeli military sources. The article “Israel Says Hezbollah Positions Put Civilians at Risk” casts no serious journalistic or responsible doubt on these Israeli claims made by a military institution that has engaged in wars that have killed tens of thousands of civilians in the past.

The Never-Ending Nakba - From Gaza to Gaza Camp

Immediately preceding the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the country that now demands others acknowledge it’s “right to exist” depopulated and destroyed over 400 Palestinian towns and villages, forcing the inhabitants to flee for their lives. The new state planted trees and established national parks over the ruins of dozens of villages where Israelis now spend quiet afternoons and enjoy picnics in the shade. The cries of the dead are drowned out by the laughter of children playing on the remains of ancient homes. The Arabic names of the destroyed villages have been erased. The Israeli state still clings to the myth of “A land without a people, for a people without a land,” and deny the Nakba took place, just as many Americans still deny an indigenous genocide in “our” country. Zochrot, an Israeli NGO, has identified and mapped every destroyed Palestinian village and town in order to reeducate the Israeli public. Their message is largely ignored.

Spanish-language networks: Israeli aid to Nepal was cover for baby trafficking

Israel used its humanitarian aid mission to Nepal as a cover for trafficking 25 Nepalese babies, two Spanish-language networks reported. Iranian HispanTV and Venezuela’s networks broadcast the reports. Telesur is the national public television channel in Venezuela, which is rebroadcast throughout Latin America on other public television networks. HispanTV broadcast the original report, which quotes an unnamed NGO as stating that “Israel uses humanitarian help as a cover for trafficking of 25 babies in Nepal.” Telesur picked up the report last week. The report stated, correctly, that of the 25 babies taken to Israel, “15 of them were born through Tammuz, an Israeli surrogacy company which provides services to Israeli couples unable to bear children, particularly homosexual couples.” The other babies also reportedly were born to surrogate mothers for Israeli parents.

Israel continues to criminalise marking Nakba Day

Each year on May 15, Palestinians across the world commemorate the Nakba (catastrophe), or the 1948 establishment of Israel that led to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians being displaced from their homeland.

The estimated 1.7 million Palestinians who carry Israeli citizenship and live in villages, towns and cities across the country are no exception. Each year, protests, marches, lectures and other events to mourn their ancestors' dispossession are held in Palestinian communities across Israel.

Yet, since 2011, Israeli legislation has made mourning the Nakba publicly difficult for Palestinians and others in Israel. The "Nakba Law" authorises Israel's finance minister to revoke funding from institutions that reject Israel's character as a "Jewish state" or mark the country's Independence Day as a day of mourning.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could either continue to fight the deal or he could swallow the deal, asking in return far-reaching benefits from the US, the sources said.

US House imposes new sanctions on Hezbollah

The US House of Representatives has unanimously approved a bill to impose new sanctions against the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah.

The House passed the measure by 423-0 on Thursday, shortly after the legislature voted overwhelmingly to approve a bill allowing Congress to review, and possibly reject, an international nuclear agreement with Iran.

The House passed similar Hezbollah sanctions legislation last year, but the Senate did not approve it.

'Like spilled blood': 1st ever Gaza film festival rolls out red carpet among ruins

In eastern Gaza City, among ruins and memories of war and destruction, a red carpet was laid out for a film festival on human rights. The event was held amidst rubble in the Shujaiyeh neighborhood, where some 100 Palestinians died in last year's Gaza war.

The Karama ('Dignity' in Arabic) Human Rights Film Festival was the first of its kind to ever be held in Gaza – and the chosen location was just the “right place” to hold such an event, according to organizer Saud Aburamadan.

“When we were looking for locations to screen the films we arrived in Shujaiyeh in eastern Gaza City, a large part of which was turned to rubble. We stood there next to the destroyed mosque, surrounded by destroyed homes in every direction, and became clear that it was the right place to hold a film festival focused on human rights,” Aburamadan told +972 Magazine.

Go home or go to jail: Israel pressures African migrants to leave

Israel is offering illegal immigrants $3,500 and a one-way ticket home as it begins to crack down on refugees, who face prison if they don’t take up the deal. Rights groups are appalled at the move, saying Israel should be doing more to protect them.

Israel says the tough move is necessary to send a message to migrants that making the journey is not worthwhile in the first place. As deterrents it has built a steel fence along the border with Egypt, houses migrants in a detention camp in the middle of a desert, and has stopped issuing work permits to deter would-be migrants

George W. Bush made a painting for Sheldon Adelson

Jewish casino magnate and political mega-donor Sheldon Adelson is now the proud owner of a painting by a reclusive artist whose works are rarely seen in public – and happens to be a former U.S. president.

At the risk of having the Secret Service harass me (again) there is a reason those works are rarely seen in public. Bush is as great a painter as he was a President.

Forced to leave grapes on the vine: the open wounds of May 1948

Each May brings painful memories for some of the oldest Palestinians. Musallam Younis Musallam was among those displaced in May 1948 and never allowed to return home.

Musallam grew up in the village of al-Batani al-Sharqi, about 30 kilometers from Gaza. In May 1948, it came under attack from Zionist forces.

The almost 6,000 residents were forced to flee and the village was totally destroyed. Musallam, then 28 years old, traveled to Maghazi in Gaza, which now hosts a camp for Palestinian refugees.

Will Israelis filmed killing Palestinian teens on Nakba Day get away with murder?

On 15 May 2014, an Israeli Border Police officer took aim at Nadim Nuwara and pulled the trigger of his M16 rifle.

The live bullet struck Nuwara, 17, in the chest and exited through his back, killing him at the scene. CCTV cameras captured the shooting, allowing for detailed forensic video, sound and spatial analysis to be used to identify Nuwara’s killer. Despite seemingly clear evidence, systemic impunity for Israeli military violence continues to be an obstacle to justice for Palestinian families living under prolonged military occupation like the Nuwaras.

Foxman: Jews demand, deserve policies designed to combat "anti-Semitism"

Foxman published a rather revealing OpEd in The Times of Israel as well, where he openly demanded that international Jewry be protected from "anti-Semitism," which in reality translates to ensuring Jews are never criticized or challenged on their false interpretation of reality in addition to preventing any open, honest discussion of Jewish power, influence, criminality, and subversiveness.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Dismissing criticism of Israel as being anti-Semitic makes as much sense as dismissing criticism of the Nazis as being anti-German!

Roger Waters to Dionne Warwick: “You are showing yourself to be profoundly ignorant of what has happened in Palestine since 1947?

First, in my view, Dionne Warwick is a truly great singer. Secondly, I doubt not that she is deeply committed to her family and her fans.

But, ultimately, this whole conversation is not about her, her gig in Tel Aviv, or even her conception of boundaries and art, though I will touch on that conception later. This is about human rights and, more specifically, this is about the dystopia that can develop, as it has in Israel, when society lacks basic belief in equal human value, when it strays from the ability to feel empathy for our brothers and sisters of different faiths, nationalities, creeds or colors.

It strikes me as deeply disingenuous of Ms. Warwick to try to cast herself as a potential victim here. The victims are the occupied people of Palestine with no right to vote and the unequal Palestinian citizens of Israel, including Bedouin Israeli citizens of the village of al-Araqib, which has now been bulldozed 83 times by order of the Israeli government.

Of all the lame-brained, lumpen-brained, hare-brained schemes emanating from Aipac’s lobby shop, this is one of the truly lamest. Criminalizing Criticism of Israel in Canada

This kind of “lawfare,” as it is sometimes called, is nothing new (nor, one can add, is the notion, also discussed at this meeting, of bolstering surveillance of pro-BDS organizations by military intelligence, the Shin Bet Security Service, and the Mossad). It’s also evident that the pro-Israel lobby has been active in mobilizing politicians in the “friendly capitals” of Washington, Ottawa, and Canberra for many years.

Recent fruits of that labour have included, in Canberra, threats made in June 2013 by Julie Bishop, a senior member of Julia Gillard’s incoming Australian government, that “supporters of an academic boycott of Israel” would have their “access to public research funds summarily cut off.”6 In Washington, a bipartisan “Protect Academic Freedom Act” that would deny federal funding “to colleges and universities that participate in a boycott of Israeli academic institutions or scholars”7 has been brought before Congress.

Fox News host dumbfounded when anti-Muslim activist Pamela Geller compares herself to Rosa Parks

Anti-Muslim activist Pamela Geller compared herself to civil rights hero Rosa Parks in a combative Fox News appearance.

Geller appeared Tuesday morning on Fox News, where she slapped back at Donald Trump for his criticism that she had prompted the shootings – which wounded a private security guard – by taunting Muslims with offensive artwork, reported Mediaite.

“What would he have said about Rosa Parks?” Geller said. “Rosa Parks should never have gone to the front of the bus — she’s taunting people.”

Host Martha MacCallum was dumbfounded, shaking her head and rejecting the comparison.

Allow Israel to kill more civilians, says British colonel

Former British army officer Colonel Richard Kemp was described by a leading anti-Palestinian lawyer as “one of the Jewish state’s greatest allies” at a conference in Jerusalem last week.

He argued that the laws of wars and the rules of engagement for “democratic armies” should be loosened to allow “maximum possible freedom of action.”

Incoming Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon has a pleasant surprise in store for him at the treasury: Since the beginning of the year – Yedioth Ahronoth, Ynet’s sister publication, has learned – the state coffers are overflowing with a tax surplus totaling NIS 3.6 billion.

The Tax Authority’s collection efforts are paying off, with the state raking in some NIS 600 million more than expected in April. This follows the NIS 3 billion surplus accumulated from January to March. The surplus is made up almost entirely of direct taxes – income tax and, primarily, real-estate taxes.

Israel’s Fascist Democracy

For years, Israel and its powerful lobby in the US and Europe have presented the Jewish state as the model of democracy in a region typically referred to as “anti-democratic.” Naturally, many pro-Palestine activists, among countless others, have long argued that the central principles of Israel’s Jewish supremacist ideology, its legal structure, and its society broadly represent anything but democracy.

Such voices have correctly noted that Israel’s policies and very essence run counter to the traits traditionally associated with democracy: the rule of law, respect for minorities, and protection of civil and human rights. While no objective analyst could reasonably dismiss those important points, recent developments in Israeli politics do point to a disturbing, and painfully ironic, trend: Israel’s loving embrace of outright fascism is, to a large degree, an expression of its democracy.
