ISIS 101: What’s really terrifying about this threat

The truly terrifying aspect of ISIS and other forces fighting with it in Syria is that the United States and Israel have approved and supported such wanton destruction in so beautiful and formerly-peaceful a place as Syria. Millions of lives destroyed and countless historic places damaged as though they were all nothing more than a few pieces moved on a geopolitical chessboard. I think it fair to describe that as the work of psychopaths.

Total Mainstream Media Blackout of Chicago Secret ‘Black Site’ at Homan Square

Nick Bernabe
Activist Post

As the nation continues to react to the newly discovered ‘black site’ operated by Chicago Police, the mainstream media continues to bury its head in the sand.

National media outlets like Fox, MSNBC, and CNN are unsurprisingly refusing to touch this story, driving even further suspicion that the corporate media has become nothing more than a mouthpiece for big government and corporate America...

Israel plans to raze more Bedouin homes

The Israeli regime plans to carry out more demolitions in an area populated by Palestinian Bedouins near al-Quds (Jerusalem). Local residents told media outlets on Sunday that they have already received orders from the Israeli military to demolish their homes themselves.

Tel Aviv authorities say they want to build settlements and military structures in the area. The demolition of Bedouin homes is part of Israel’s massive land grab plan, which will forcefully displace thousands of people.

4 More Victims Come Forward From Chicago Secret Prison, Man Tortured Over Weed

Cassius Methyl
Activist Post

Four more victims of incarceration at Chicago’s Guantanamo Bay style secret detention/torture center, known as Homan Square, have come out and spoken to The Guardian about their experience being essentially treated like cattle.

They are four black males, Brock Terry, Kory Wright, Deandre Hutcherson and David Smith. Three of them were held in 2006, and one in 2011.

They were kicked in the genitals while helpless and bound, put in ‘kennels for humans’, and they heard the bloodcurdling screams of other helpless victims while they thought they would never see the light of day again...

MI6 complicity? Lee Rigby killer’s torture claims investigated, says Cameron

A new inquiry will be conducted into claims that MI6 were complicit in the alleged torture of Michael Adebolajo, one of the two men later convicted of murdering British soldier Lee Rigby in Woolwich in May 2013.

The investigation will focus on how the British spy agency handled claims Adebolajo was beaten by Kenya’s security forces, who have close ties with the UK, while detained there in 2010.

Prime Minister David Cameron ordered the inquiry after a report by Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) criticized MI6, also known as the Secret Intelligence Service.

The committee’s report found MI6 never asked the Kenyan authorities about Adebolajo’s claims, dismissing them as fabricated.

Nation Reacts as Chicago Police’s Secret Prison Confirms Fears Over NDAA

The most important part about this revelation may be the likelihood of there being several more locations like this all across America where police can secretly detain, disappear, and kill people illegally or legally under the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

This could be the first instance of the NDAA being put to use; the first time authorities exercise their power to detain or kill anyone they want legally. Or maybe we just haven’t heard about this program because it’s been a closely guarded secret for a long time. There is a possibility that this secret detention center’s practices predate the indefinite detention provisions of the NDAA, which was signed into law on New Years Day in 2012. This would mean the program was operating entirely outside of what is considered to be the law. Not exactly surprising.

Which 2016 GOP candidate is most gung-ho for war?

A battle to watch: Which 2016 GOP candidate is most gung-ho for war?
Republican voters are hearing the war drums, and are beginning to nod their heads in time to the rhythm. That’s the conclusion one can come to reading this new poll http://www.people-press.org/2015/02/24/growing-support-for-campaign-ag... from the Pew Research Center, which notes, among other things, an increasing eagerness among Republican voters to use ground troops in Iraq and Syria.

We are now likely to enter a cycle in which more hawkish voters lead the GOP candidates to become more hawkish in order to appeal to them, which will in turn encourage the voters to become even more hawkish because they’ll be taking their cues from the things they hear from their party leaders, and around the cycle will go.

In military slang, Predator drone operators often refer to kills as ‘bug splats’, since viewing the body through a grainy video image gives the sense of an insect being crushed.

From Torture to Drone Assassination: How Washington Gave Itself a Global Get-Out-of-Jail-Free Card

"The sovereign is he who decides on the exception," said conservative thinker Carl Schmitt in 1922, meaning that a nation's leader can defy the law to serve the greater good. Though Schmitt's service as Nazi Germany's chief jurist and his unwavering support for Hitler from the night of the long knives to Kristallnacht and beyond damaged his reputation for decades, today his ideas have achieved unimagined influence. They have, in fact, shaped the neo-conservative view of presidential power that has become broadly bipartisan since 9/11. Indeed, Schmitt has influenced American politics directly through his intellectual protégé Leo Strauss who, as an émigré professor at the University of Chicago, trained Bush administration architects of the Iraq war Paul Wolfowitz and Abram Shulsky.

At War With Those “Who Have Perverted Islam”

The latest ISIL political ally to surface is Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York City, and an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for president in 2008.

During a speech at this week’s White House conference on countering violent extremism,President Obama described the enemy that calls itself ISIL:

“We are not at war with Islam; we are at war with people who have perverted Islam.”

That statement is sensible and it is clear. It represents the President’s careful separation of ISIL (initially self-designated as the Islamic State in the Levant) from the world’s Muslim population.

ISIL is not remotely representative of Islam. It steals its language the way extremists out of Jewish and Christian backgrounds pervert those religious communities.

A Century of American Figurehead Presidents Marching to the Beat of Wall Street and the New World Order

But between our Presidents’ Day sales, popcorn and beer, this President’s Day 2015 might also be an opportune time to pause and reflect on our presidents over this last century. President’s Day then becomes a sober reckoning of how the fate of our cherished democratic republic was lost and stolen by today’s totalitarian oligarchy. A chronicle of this last century’s presidents offers us Americans a greater understanding of the diminished role our figurehead presidents have played as a mere public face to the shrouded power elite puppet masters pulling their strings. What follows is a presentational overview providing a step-by-step thread of continuity that has led us to the New World Order burgeoning today.

1913 was a pivotal year that brought to fruition the meticulously laid out agenda conspired in total secrecy of the Jekyll Island Coup d’Etat that culminated with the Federal Reserve Act signed by President Woodrow Wilson establishing the deceptively covert, privatized central banking cabal of the Federal Reserve Board. The other illegal 1913 coup that was part of the low-blow, one-two near knockout punch against the American people was the birth of the federal income tax. Thus the foundation of today’s globalist Ponzi scheme on the verge right now of implosion gained its lethal foothold into our lives just one year before “the war to end all wars.”

Toronto Star promoting the extreme right in Ukraine

The three conglomerates that dominate print media in Canada -- Torstar, which publishes the Toronto Star, the country’s largest daily newspaper; Woodbridge, which publishes The Globe and Mail, the largest national daily; and Postmedia, which controls the daily newspapers of most cities in English Canada -- speak on Ukraine as though they all attended the same indoctrination sessions. Viewed through their prism, Ukraine is topsy-turvy and bears little resemblance to reality. Human rights, moral standards and the concerns of the people of the east of the country are given no standing, no voice and no sympathy.

Among the three, the Star has distinguished itself in that three of its writers have used their column and article space to vaunt the fundraising projects of Ukraine's extreme-right parties and militias and the Ukraine army. These are the forces which have been shelling towns and cities in eastern Ukraine and otherwise committing countless war crimes for the better part of the past year.

WIRETAPS REVEAL TURKEY'S ATTACKS ON SYRIAN REGIME POSITIONS

Media reports based on eyewitness and opposition sources saying that Turkey has become a party to the civil war in Syria have found their way into court proceedings. During the trial of the Islamic State (IS) militants who attacked Turkish security forces at Nigde last year, court files revealed that Turkey, beyond supplying opposition forces with weapons and ammunition, had also given artillery support to the opposition groups that captured Kassab. The prosecutor obtained striking admissions by tapping the defendants’ phones. According to documents obtained by Ahmet Sik of Cumhuriyet, the wiretapping transcripts reveal that the opposition forces at Kassab inform people in Turkey of the coordinates of Syrian army positions around Kassab, and then Turkey shells those locations.

No More AUMFs! No More 'Unitary Executives' We’re Losing Our Democracy and All Our Freedoms by DAVE LINDORFF

snip: The legal “theory” cobbled together by the Bush/Cheney White House attorney-for-hire John Yoo and accepted by the Supreme Court majority is that during time of war, and particularly in a war zone, the Constitution makes the American president a “unitary executive” who has within his power not just executive, but also legislative and judicial authority to act on his own without restraint. This is the specious argument that has allowed President Obama, and President Bush before him, to override the Constitutional guarantee of a right to a fair trial by ones peers, and to simply decide whether to torture captives or whether an American should be killed in a drone strike for allegedly being a terrorist or terror supporter. It is the argument that allows the president to decide that it’s okay to torture someone, in violation of US and international law. It’s okay for the NSA and other federal agencies to spy on Americans under this unitary executive theory, too.

Brutal Guantanamo interrogator accused of planting evidence and torturing suspects to extract murder confessions during 30-year career as Chicago detective

A Guantanamo Bay interrogator responsible for implementing brutal methods at the prison allegedly used similar tactics to extract murder confessions from non-white citizens during his 30-year spell as a Chicago detective.

American police brutality, exported from Chicago to Guantánamo

Allegations stemming from interviews and court documents, concerning five Chicago suspects, suggest Zuley and his colleagues shackled suspects to walls for extended periods, threatened their family members, and perhaps even planted evidence on them. The point was to yield confessions, even while ignoring potentially exculpatory evidence.

Several of those techniques bear similarities to those used by Zuley when he took over the interrogation of Mohamedou Ould Slahi at Guantánamo, described in official government reports and a best-selling memoir serialised last month by the Guardian as one of the most brutal ever conducted at the US wartime prison.

European Court confirms Polish complicity in CIA rendition and torture

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has today confirmed its judgement that Poland actively assisted the CIA’s European “black site” programme, which saw detainees held and tortured in secret prisons across the Continent.

In July 2014, the ECHR had ruled that Poland “facilitated” the torture, secret detention and unlawful transfer of Abu Zubaydah, who is now held in Guantanamo Bay.

Mr Zubaydah was flown from a secret site in Thailand to another CIA prison in Stare Kiejkuty in northern Poland, where he was detained and tortured during 2002 and 2003. The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) detailed in its recent report how Mr Zubaydah was subjected to torture numerous times by the CIA, before the Agency concluded that he was not a member of al Qaeda at all.

The human rights group Defence for Children International Palestine found that “Palestinian children detained by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank last year fell victim to a pattern of abuse designed to coerce confessions.”

They reported that Israeli occupiers ordered solitary confinement, sleep deprivation, and torture against children. “Impunity for violations was a significant obstacle in 2014 as DCIP filed nine complaints with Israeli authorities concerning the ill-treatment and torture of five children while in Israeli military detention. Not a single indictment has been issued against a perpetrator,” the group wrote.

They green-lighted it all, but don’t for a second think that they weren’t afraid themselves. To touch that fear (bordering on paranoia), you only have to read Jane Mayer’s book The Dark Side where she describes Vice President Dick Cheney in that post-9/11 period being “chauffeured in an armored motorcade that varied its route to foil possible attackers." In the backseat of his car (just in case), she added, "rested a duffel bag stocked with a gas mask and a biochemical survival suit." And lest danger rear its head, "rarely did he travel without a medical doctor in tow."

Why we need the International Criminal Court

Lawrence Davidson explains why the implications of the International Criminal Court’s preliminary investigation of Israeli war crimes during the 2014 invasion of the Gaza Strip go far beyond the Middle East.

Why We Need the International Criminal Court

Since law is one of the foundations of civilization, shouldn't we make sure that no one stands above it.

The adage that no one should be above the law is of particular importance here. The problem is that there are innumerable cases where some individual or group holds sufficient political power to defy the rule of law.

This issue has not yet been fully confronted because, until very recently, no one has actually brought the crimes of individuals representing large and powerful states, or their allies, to the attention of the Court.

How do you arrest the indicted person if he is Henry Kissinger, George W. Bush or any number of Israeli military and civilian leaders, all of whom may well warrant the Court’s attention.

However, this is about to change due to the decision of the Palestinian National Authority to join the ICC. This has resulted in an ICC preliminary investigation of Israeli war crimes during the 2014 invasion of the Gaza Strip.

Russia’s Putin wins in Ukraine conflict

The 13 main points of the new agreement have carried forward the twelve-point Minsk accord of last September. But there is ‘additionality’ too insofar as timeline has been given for compliance by the warring sides and other protagonists.

The terms of the latest agreement confirms that Russia negotiated from a strong position — contrary to what the blistering western propaganda all along wanted us to believe.

The ‘additionality’ in regard of the future of the eastern regions to be decided by the end of the year doubtless is a major gain for Russia, as the induction of Ukraine into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization [NATO] is virtually ruled out if the constitutional reform goes through. This has been the core Russian demand.

They were among at least 844 Palestinians killed as a result of airstrikes on homes during Israel’s summer war with the Islamic militant group, Hamas.

Under the rules of war, homes are considered protected civilian sites unless used for military purposes. Israel says it attacked only legitimate targets, alleging militants used the houses to hide weapons, fighters and command centers. Palestinians say Israel’s warplanes often struck without regard for civilians.

Saturday, February 14th, marks 13 years since the arrival of British resident Shaker Aamer at Guantanamo Bay, where he has been held without charge or trial ever since.

Mr Aamer, a father of four from London, has been cleared for release under both the Bush and Obama administrations, in a process which requires six government agencies to confirm that he poses no threat. However, he remains imprisoned in Guantanamo, despite repeated requests by the UK Government that he be returned to his family in South London.

Tom Cotton: U.S. Should Be 'Proud' Of How It Treats Guantanamo Detainees

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) on Monday said the U.S. should be "proud" of how it treats the "savages" it detains at the Guantanamo Bay military prison.

"Terrorists need no excuse to attack us here. They've shown that for decades and decades," Cotton said on Fox News' "The Kelly File." "We should be proud for the way we treated these savages at Guantanamo Bay and the way our soldiers conduct themselves all around the world to include the people doing the very hard work at Guantanamo Bay."

Last year, a lawyer for one Guantanamo detainee said that videos of his client being force-fed were so disturbing that he had trouble sleeping after viewing them. Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, called for the closure of the facility last month, saying that it had created a "psychological scar." A 2009 report by Amnesty International said detainees were subjected to incredibly harsh conditions, including sleep deprivation and force-feeding.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I am having a palm to forehead moment, at velocity, upon reading this.

And I would share the following observation with Senator Cotton. Many of these men have been convicted of no crime whatsoever; but, as you well know, many of them have been tortured.

And here is the problem, Senator Cotton: there are many at Gitmo who the US government will never release, because the marks of torture on their bodies bears incontrovertible witness to the reality that they were tortured.

And many times, they were tortured by Americans, to get them to confess to specific accusations in order to get US citizens to become more emotionally "comfortable" with the government narrative on specific issues, many of which had absolutely no relationship with reality.

And when the US tortures, or outsources torture, the following things happen, sir.

First, the world understands that those values of humanity, decency, the rule of law, and due process, which this country's leadership allegedly holds dear, are only practiced in the breach by the leaders of this country.

And secondly, when the US tortures, or outsources torture, it gives carte blanche for any foreign government, which doesn't like the US very much, to do the same to our military and civilian personnel.

Sir, I would deeply appreciate it if you could actually think about these points for a little while, before ingesting one more drop of the official koolaid on this issue.

Another dubious Islamic State video, more foreign policy folly

The world has been sleepwalked into a handful of senseless wars in the Middle East that have served no other purpose than to fatten the pockets of Western war profiteers and strengthen the Israeli regime’s position in the region.

And we can’t seem to find a way off this deadly trajectory towards doom.

The slickly made video begs a few questions. Who produces IS’s videos for them? Rag-tag militants simply don’t have the technical prowess required for IS’s latest execution flick. Where do they get the money to finance these projects? How do they have time to make such videos amidst an insurgency against the Syrian regime? And how do they shoot these highly choreographed videos while they allegedly dodge Western coalition airstrikes?

Did the United States Department of Justice Just Lie to the U.N.?First appeared: http://journal-neo.org/2015/02/06/did-the-united-states-department-of-justice-just-lie-to-the-u-n/

For Americans, confidence in government is at a low. Growing numbers of people now question nearly any declaration made by the US government, particularly when its assertions are either

1) addressing terrorism or

2) addressing domestic policies.

Recent statements by David Bitkower, Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Division, United States Department of Justice to the United Nations Convention Against Torture, statements made during the review by that body of the US and its torture policies during the past five years, could be considered as subsumed under both of the above two categories. And sadly, Bitkower misrepresented actions taken by the US DOJ.

Mariupol-Donetsk-Frunza! Can Poroshenko Escape Crimes Against Humanity Trial?

A little over a week ago Petro Poroshenko ordered an all out assault on Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. Faced with massive losses during the first few days the Poroshenko regime has resorted unsuccessfully to get both republic’s listed as terrorist organizations by the EU and United Nations.

It started with the Volonavaha bus attack after which the bus driver states in an interview with theKorrespondent that a mine exploded and killed his passengers in Ukrainian controlled territory. Images from the scene taken by the Ukrainian army shows a soldier carrying what appears to be a claymore mine. Claymore mines are directional explosives that are set off remotely or by a trip wire.

Kiev is engaging in a game of escalating crimes against humanity. Each attack on civilian populations has been followed by an all out media blitz trying to place blame on the fledgling republics.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Because Ukraine is aligned with the US, which has been committing war crimes against humanity with impunity for so many years, I think Poroshenko believes that he will never be tried or convicted for these crimes.

"We murdered some folks" in Guantanamo

Murder at Camp Delta is a new book by Joseph Hickman, a former guard at Guantanamo. It's neither fiction nor speculation. When President Obama says "We tortured some folks," Hickman provides at least three cases -- in addition to many others we know about from secret sites around the world -- in which the statement needs to be modified to "We murdered some folks." Of course, murder is supposed to be acceptable in war (and in whatever you call what Obama does with drones) while torture is supposed to be, or used to be, a scandal. But what about tortures to death? What about deadly human experimentation? Does that have a Nazi enough ring to disturb anyone?

The internal report, more than 1,000 pages in length, came to be known as the Panetta Review after Leon E. Panetta, who, as the C.I.A.’s director, ordered that it be done in 2009. At least one of its authors won an agency award for her work, according to a recent briefing that the agency’s inspector general gave to staff members of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Report Portrays a Broken C.I.A. Devoted to a Failed Approach

In January 2003, 10 months into the Central Intelligence Agency’s secret prison program, the agency’s chief of interrogations sent an email to colleagues saying that the relentlessly brutal treatment of prisoners was a train wreck “waiting to happen and I intend to get the hell off the train before it happens.” He said he had told his bosses he had “serious reservations” about the program and no longer wanted to be associated with it “in any way.”

The bitter infighting in the C.I.A. interrogation program was only one symptom of the dysfunction, disorganization, incompetence, greed and deception described in a summary of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s report. In more than 500 pages, the summary, released on Tuesday, paints a devastating picture of an agency that was ill equipped to take on the task of questioning Al Qaeda suspects, bungled the job and then misrepresented the results.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So the US government knew that this program was absolutely not working...but kept doing it anyway, gleefully killing and maiming prisoners of war, physically and psychologically along the way.

There are people who derive immense satisfaction from torturing, or witnessing it being done, or reading about its being done; it is simply unfortunate when some of those people are those who had taken an oath of office to "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution", like that unholy trinity of Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld

And unless and until there is an inquiry, where these three people get charged with war crimes, the moral conscience of this country can never, ever come back to normal.

We have become a nation which tortures, and extrajucially assassinates people overseas with absolutely no due process. We have become a nation of economic exploitation in every direction on the globe.

The fastest way to get all terrorism to cease would be for the US to stop mucking about in other countries to claim resources to which we have absolutely no moral right, as well as stopping all support to tinpot dictators because they are "our thugs" (like the Al-Khalifa monarchy in Bahrain.)

‘CIA killed prisoners, made it look like suicide’ – Guantanamo guard

A former Guantanamo Bay prison guard and Marine explained in details what makes him believe three problematic detainees were killed at CIA black site in Guantanomo and their death was covered up as a triple suicide.

Army Staff Sergeant Joseph Hickman was on duty at the notorious prison camp when the three men died, and insists the official version of events is “impossible,” he told Vice News.

The three men were Salah Ahmed Al-Salami, 37, from Yemen, Mani Shaman Al-Utaybi, 30, from Saudi Arabia, and Yasser Talal Al-Zahrani, 22, also from Saudi Arabia. None of them had been charged with any crime.

He explained in an incendiary interview with Vice News that the three men would have had to have committed suicide at exactly the same time in a cellblock where guards check on detainees every four minutes.

HRW urges Kiev to acknowledge cluster bomb use, stop indiscriminate killings in E. Ukraine

During his visit to Germany earlier in January, Yatsenyuk was questioned by Frankfurter Allgemeine on the cluster bombs and Grad multiple rocket launchers against town and villages in southeast Ukraine.

But the prime minister rejected the allegation, saying that “there is no evidence to that. No evidence,” and suggested that more attention should be paid to the Republic of Crimea, which reunited with Russia in March 2014.

However, Roth told RIA-Novosti news agency that Yatsenyuk lied to the German media as Human Right Watch (HRW) had “published a lot of evidence that Ukraine refuses to distinguish between military targets and civilians as required by the laws and customs of war."

The rights watchdog has presented detailed information on those violations during meetings with the Kiev authorities in November and December last year, he said.

Guantanamo Bay staff sergeant claims three men believed to have committed suicide were actually tortured to death

A staff sergeant at Guantanamo Bay claims to have solved one of the military prison’s greatest mysteries: Three men the Pentagon says killed themselves were actually tortured to death by the CIA.

The official government line was that Yasser Talal al-Zahrani of Yemen, and Salah Ahmed al-Salami and Mani Shaman al-Utaybi, both of Saudi Arabia, killed themselves in 2006 in a suicide pact.

Rear Adm. Harry Harris, the commander of the Joint Task Force Guantanamo, called the deaths “an asymmetric warfare committed against us.” The men were said to have hanged themselves.

New evidence shows CIA held prisoners in Lithuania

New analysis and previously unpublished documents released by legal charity Reprieve show that the CIA held prisoners in Lithuania in 2005 and 2006, contrary to official denials.

In a dossier and briefing submitted to the Lithuanian Prosecutor today, Reprieve reveals how the newly declassified US Senate Report on CIA detention correlates with flight data and contracting documents; and demonstrates that prisoners were moved into Lithuania in February and October 2005, and out of Lithuania to Afghanistan in March 2006.

A previous investigation by Lithuanian prosecutors, shelved in 2011, concluded that the CIA built a facility in a converted stable outside Vilnius, but argued there was no evidence that prisoners were ever held in it.

There Are Several Thousand Secret Photos of America's Horrific Torture Program. Should Obama Release Them?

You may recall, from the dark days of Abu Ghraib, that there was a batch of photos that was never released—images the Pentagon deemed so inflammatory that they needed to stay under wraps. The ones we saw were disturbing enough: the piles of naked Iraqi prisoners, the soldier giving a thumbs up next to an ice-packed corpse, the prisoners being menaced by dogs. And who can forget that iconic shot of a hooded man (his name is Ali Shalil Qaissi), standing on a box in a shower with wires attached to his fingers—a mock execution. There are as many as 2,100 additional images, according to the ACLU, which sued the government in 2004 demanding their release. President Obama has resisted the legal efforts, noting in a statement that to make the photos public would "impact the safety of our troops."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Actually, release of the photos will impact the safety of our leaders who ordered the use of these methods, and frankly I see that as a good thing! So yes, release them all. We The People have a right to know what the government has been doing with our money and in our name. And if it is war crimes, which seems to be the case, We The People have a moral obligation to crate up these leaders ourselves and ship them to the Hague for trial.

Countries like Iran, North Korea, and China have already cited our use of waterboarding to defend against their own abuses. When our soldiers or citizens are waterboarded in the future, countries will play back Cheney’s words and others to say that such abuse is not torture. When we demand that officials in other countries be prosecuted for torture, they will mock our hypocrisy and own history.

Leaked documents raise new questions over UK complicity in secret US drone strikes

Previously secret documents obtained by Der Speigel – including a ‘Kill List’ that included both Pakistani and Afghan targets – have raised new concerns about British complicity in the US’s covert drone war in Pakistan.

The documents, detailed in an article published yesterday evening, show that NATO and British forces in Afghanistan planned to target and kill individuals that were located across the border in Pakistan. The UK government has consistently denied that it has taken strikes outside of Afghanistan and has refused to confirm whether and to what extent it is involved in the CIA’s covert drone war in Pakistan.

UN Security Council Prepares to Lynch North Korea. Manipulation to Justify Aggressive War?

On December 18, and in the subsequent December 22 Security Council meeting, the double standards within the United Nations are shockingly visible, and one can only gasp at the arrogance of the blatantly biased and politically motivated resolution A/69/488/Add.3 which “condemns the long-standing and ongoing systematic, widespread and gross violations of human rights in the DPRK.” The resolution condemning the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is clearly an attempt to eviscerate the socialist government of North Korea.

The use of allegations of human rights abuses by the United States, the world’s most powerful country, and the powerful country whose own documented record of criminal human rights abuses has just been published, causing revulsion and horror throughout the world, constitutes an assault on justice which so dishonors the United Nations that the adoption of this resolution condemning the DPRK can only be described as shameful.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The short answer posed by the title of this article is, "HELL, yes!".

And why?!? Because war with North Korea will translate into a war against China, which has both a national currency and military capabilities on the ascendent.

It is a war the US government and military may well lose; but just because an action is the most pig-headedly, ham-fistedly wrong thing the US government could possibly do is, unfortunately, absolutely no guarantee that it will not do such a thing.

How The CIA's Torture Program Is Destroying The Key Foreign Power The US Had: The Moral High Ground

Over a year ago, we wrote about a wonderful piece in Foreign Affairs by Henry Farrell and Martha Finnemore, noting that the real "danger" of the Snowden and Manning revelations was that it effectively killed off the US's ability to use hypocrisy as a policy tool. Here was the key bit (though the whole article is worth reading):

The deeper threat that leakers such as Manning and Snowden pose is more subtle than a direct assault on U.S. national security: they undermine Washington’s ability to act hypocritically and get away with it. Their danger lies not in the new information that they reveal but in the documented confirmation they provide of what the United States is actually doing and why. When these deeds turn out to clash with the government’s public rhetoric, as they so often do, it becomes harder for U.S. allies to overlook Washington’s covert behavior and easier for U.S. adversaries to justify their own.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, here is the heart and soul of the US government at this point in its history; it will lie, cheat, jail, torture, extrajudicially assassinate, and wage war against people who get in the way of the country's (and world's) monied interests.

To all those countries which have natural resources the US government wants, be very aware that it will do everything in its power to destabilize your government, and put in a US-centric government that will do its bidding; failing that, the US government will wage outright war to get those resources.

And to its citizens: you have become completely expendable, because your alleged representatives only represent those corporations which so lavishly fund their election cycles. You and your needs and issues have become irreverent, because it is only the needs and issues of those major corporations which are addressed.

Your jobs will continue to be offshored, outsourced, reducing you to working several minimum wage jobs just to survive, if you can find them.

You will be taxed into poverty, thrown out on the streets when you can't pay the rent, and your homelessness will become criminalized, at which point you will most likely languish in a for-profit prison, as a slave laborer there.

That is a painfully, bleakly honest portrait of this government going into 2015.

Michael Ratner: Dick Cheney Is Lying by Saying that the Torture Program Has Worked

According to Michael Ratner, Dick Cheney has lied to the American people by saying that the Detention and Interrogation Program was effective and helped with the progress of the Global War on Terror.

“Cheney is lying when he said the program worked. The Senate report studied 20 claims by the CIA of stopping terrorist plots. None of the information used to stop those plots was elicited from torture,” said Michael Ratner in an interview with Fars News Agency.

Mr. Ratner, who has been the President of the Center for Constitutional Rights, tells Fars News Agency that President Obama’s failure to stop the torturing and persecuting of the Guantanamo bay prisoners was one of the “disgusting chapters” in his presidency.

“He [Obama] ran a campaign in 2008 with the promise he would close Guantánamo. He has been a weakling on this issue, caving to the national security establishment,” he said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Just because someone has held high office in this country is absolutely no guarantee of their credibility or truthfulness. Quite the contrary!!

And the reality about those Gitmo prisoners of war cleared for release, but who remain imprisoned, is that they will be incarcerated for life, because water-boarding was not the worst thing done to them, and the scars will be there for life.

With the complete anger and disgust I am feeling about this dark, immoral, and illegal chapter of this country's history, I can almost feel an ad hominem attack against Cheney coming on; I will resist the temptation, and simply ask: was this the best American Republicans could come up with as a vice-presidential candidate when Bush was running?!?

The sad, and insurmountable truth here was that, for the money junkies, particularly those making money through the military industrial complex, Cheney was a god, incredibly capable of making incredible money for them through the waging of wars.

And very frankly, the options with which American will be presented in 2016 will be no better, no matter if it is Republicans or Democrats who are victorious in the national election.

Americans are under the illusions that their voting, in national elections, actually makes a difference.

The ugly truth is, in 21st century America, it does not.

And that is because Congressional "representatives" only represent the corporations which fund their election cycles, which is why legislation is always great for corporations, and generally lousy for We the People. Any candidates truly interested in what is good for the nation as a whole are culled from the process long before we enter a voting booth.

We have become expendable to this government. We no longer matter; only the goals and financial aims of the large corporations matter.

And when those goals and financial aims of those corporations align with wars, then wars they shall have.

It does not matter to these corporations how many Americans will have to die, or be maimed for life, in these military conflicts for private corporate profit; after all, it is nearly never the children of chairmen or chairwomen of the board who are tapped to die or languish with unspeakable injuries.

It is just other people's children, and they (read: our sons and daughters, husbands and wives) are certainly completely and thoroughly expendable to the monied class.

US moves to block distribution of graphic photos of military’s brutal detainee abuse. Again.

The government is withholding nearly 2,100 images that show the military's brutal treatment of detainees at various prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan. While the previously disclosed pictures from Abu Ghraib are the stuff of nightmares- piles of naked bodies, detainees being led on leashes, and US soldiers giving a thumbs up as it happens- these photographs are siad to be even more disturbing. One image reportedly shows a female soldier pretending to sodomize a naked prisoner with a broom, while others allegedly depict US troops pointing guns at detainees' heads.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A memo to the US government: release the photos. And then create the climate in the US military and CIA, along with clear guidelines, which will absolutely insure that this dark chapter in America's history will never, ever repeat itself against US-held prisoners of war.

When the US tortures, or outsources torture, the following happens.

The world comes to see that those values the US government alleges that it holds dear (humanity, decency, and human rights) are simply words, with absolutely no true meaning.

This alone should stop the US government from torturing prisoners of war, if we ever wish to be viewed as a moral nation again.

And when the US tortures, it gives carte blanche for governments which don't particularly like the US to do precisely the same to our military and civilian personnel.

To those of you with family or friends in the military, please think about that for awhile.

Humankind has known since the time of the Catholic Inquisition that torture only gets the tortured person to confess to whatever the torturer is accusing him of doing to get the torture to stop.

Torture is about getting confessions; not about procuring actionable intelligence.

So why, in the 21st century, did the US government sign off on torture, under the watch of that unholy trinity of Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld?!?

First, as reported at islandbreath.blogspot.com:

Comment by editor Mike Slavo at SHTF Plan concerning the article below: As this article makes quite clear, while the debate over the use of torture by the CIA and other entities against enemies and terrorists is important, the framing of the report sidesteps the pertinent question of why torture was being used during the Bush Administration’s prosecution of the War on Terror. And the answer was pointed out by the 2009 Armed Service Committee report – that torture has been used historically to produce false confession. FALSE confessions. Why? To produce bogus and sensational stories to support pro-war, pro-torture, pro-clandestine propaganda. Cheney, Rumsfeld and others in the Bush Administration were trying to justify and goad on the war in Iraq by linking Saddam Hussein to Osama bin Laden and 9/11. The rhetoric is in countless media clips from the time, but the factual case was not there. Torture victims were pressed to provide the links the administration needed to open the door to endless war, and to stir fear in the minds of the American population.

And secondly, there are some monumentally twisted pieces of work, allegedly human, who get off on torturing, and they understood, under the previous administration, that torturing never meant having, ultimately to say, "you're sorry"; it was all emotional pleasure for them in this process, and no moral responsibility whatsoever.

I sometimes wonder if, emotionally, signing off on these horrific practices, in order to obtain false confessions, made Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld feel butch.

Hell, if someone passed out from the pain, a medic could, usually, bring them back to consciousness again, and the "fun" would start all over for them.

I am strongly reminded of a World War II German interrogator who absolutely never, ever used harsh treatment to get information. The guy's name is Hanns Scharff, and he learned English as a businessman in South Africa before the war. here is his story:

The Scharff method, if so it may be called, relied on the initial premise that it was better for a flier to co-operate with the Luftwaffe, instead of being regarded as a spy and handed over to the Gestapo. Even though there were a few prisoners who remained button-lipped, Scharff resolutely refused to descend to using physical coercion. Instead of using pliers to squeeze information out of prisoners, Scharff got what he and his superiors wanted by playing on a prisoner's sense of isolation and psychological insecurity. Carefully deploying what were sometimes meagre scraps of data, Scharff sought to create the illusion of total knowledge about a prisoner's activities. Misled into believing that the interrogator knew just about everything anyway, the latter could then be bamboozled into disclosing military secrets. Scharff appeared to reverse the overtly adversarial relationship between interrogator and prisoner by adopting a subtle, softly-softly approach.

What this man did was discover actionable intelligence without ever resorting to violence.

One would think that the US government would be able, perhaps, to learn from history; unfortunately, in recent years, it has proven itself pathologically incapable of doing so.

Israel violates Gaza ceasefire nearly every day

After Israeli warplanes bombed Gaza on Friday, the BBC described the air strike on “a Hamas facility” as “the first such action since the declaration of a truce in August.”

The short BBC News item, essentially a repackaged Israeli army press statement, added that the strike was “in response” to a rocket fired earlier from Gaza.

However, the reality is that Israel has fired on Palestinians in Gaza nearly every day since the 26 August truce.

Democracy And Corruption: Germany Files War Crimes Charges Against Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld And Other CIA Officials

The European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights has filed a criminal complaint against U.S. torture program architects and members of the Bush Administration. The organization has accused CIA director George Tenet and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld of war crimes and they’ve called for a German prosecutor to conduct an immediate investigation.

This move follows the release of the damning Senate report on CIA torture that includes the case of German citizen Khalid El-Masri, who was captured in 2004 by CIA agents in a case of mistaken identity. The report revealed the shocking contrast of democracy and corruption.

Bizarrely, the only person involved with the CIA torture program who has been charged with a crime is the man who exposed the war crimes — whistleblower John Kiriakou.

Yet no apology: CIA’s mistaken detention destroyed German man’s life

Khalid al Masri is a broken man today. A decade after the CIA snatched him by mistake, flew him half way around the world in secret, and questioned him as part of its detention and interrogation program, he’s yet to recover.

When his Ulm attorney and confidant Manfred Gnjidic last saw him, he was broke, unkempt, paranoid and completely alone. He’d been arrested twice and sent once to a psychiatric ward, once to jail. He was in deep need of psychological counseling but with no hope of the extensive help he needed.

On Friday, President Obama signed yet another annual defense bill which explicitly forbids closing the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, leaving a pledge to close the site, made on his first day in office, unresolved.

Despite this, President Obama insisted that he will “do everything I can” to close the site, which apparently did not include not signing anything that bans closing the site.

Obama did accompany the signing with a statement insisting that anything he views as violation of his constitutional powers, which includes the Gitmo provision, would be ignored.

Obama vows 'do everything I can' to close Guantanamo: CNN interview

U.S. president Barack Obama said in a TV interview set for broadcast on Sunday that he will do "everything I can" to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after four Afghan detainees held there were sent home.

Obama promised to shut the internationally condemned prison when he took office nearly six years ago, saying it was damaging America's image around the world. But he has been unable to do so, partly because of obstacles posed by the U.S. Congress.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Obama said this on CNN just two days after signing a bill to keep Guantanamo open!

Israel – America’s torture consultant

I watched painfully former Vice-President Dick Cheney on NBC television’s “Meet the Press” programme trying to defend and redefine his role in the “authorised” CIA torture. Whenever he was asked about a specific torture case, Cheney always referred back to the “tortured” Americans who lost their lives in 9/11.

Four Afghans Released From Guantánamo Bay

The United States transferred four detainees from the Guantánamo Bay prison to Afghanistan late Friday, the Defense Department announced Saturday, fulfilling a request from the new Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani, in what officials here characterized as a show of good will between the United States and the government in Kabul.

New York Times calls for Cheney, Bush officials to be investigated and prosecuted for torture

In a blistering editorial published in the Monday edition of the New York Times, the editorial page editors are calling upon the Justice Department to open an investigation into the torture practices committed during the administration of President George W. Bush with an eye towards prosecuting those who “committed torture and other serious crimes,” along with former Vice President Dick Cheney and other major administration officials.

Under a headline reading, “Prosecute Torturers and Their Bosses,” the board criticizes the administration of current President Barrack Obama for failing “to bring to justice anyone responsible for the torture of terrorism suspects,” during the period following the attack on 9/11.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unfortunately, as well intentioned as this op ed may be, it will only happen when pigs fly.

And the reason I say this is that the monied and corporate interests wanted Iraq's oil to be sold only in US dollars; that has not changed, and will not change, at least in the short term.

They still want wars, with which to attach and purchase, assets around the world; assets in which neither they nor their children will fight, get tortured, or be maimed for life or die.

For them, it is always completely acceptable that other people's children fight, die,get maimed for life, or get tortured to enhance their corporation's private profits.

The CIA Experimented on Human Beings

Human experimentation was a core feature of the CIA’s torture program. The experimental nature of the interrogation and detention techniques is clearly evident in the Senate Intelligence Committee’s executive summary of its investigative report, despite redactions (insisted upon by the CIA) to obfuscate the locations of these laboratories of cruel science and the identities of perpetrators.

At the helm of this human experimentation project were two psychologists hired by the CIA, James Mitchell and Bruce Jessen. They designed interrogation and detention protocols that they and others applied to people imprisoned in the agency’s secret “black sites.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

"...derived from experiments on dogs..."?!?!?

Sorry, will you run that one by me just one more time please?!?

How can dogs provide actionable intelligence, to be "extracted", after they have become totally submissive, through the process of "learned helplessness"?!?

Where is the moral outrage, please, in this country, that such a thing should be allowed to come to fruition?!?

And I say this because humankind has known, since the Catholic Inquisition, that torture only gets the person to say what the torturer wants them to say in order to get the torture to stop.

Torture produces no actionable intelligence; only confessions, period, end of discussion.

And IF the US was in fact a moral country, these men, alongside that unholy trinity of Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld, would be cooling their heels in a prison, awaiting a trial for torture, and crimes against humanity.

And until and unless that happens, the US will simply sink deeper into the morass of dictatorship, more unwinnable wars, and the persecution, and jailing, of whistle blowers and the independent media, working hard to tell the truth, and not for financial gain.

A harsh wind blows across this country, and there is a collective shiver up and down the collective spine of every thinking American.

And the reason for that is a very clear understanding of the Biblical injuction about "That which you sow, you shall also reap."

This country has sown the seeds of death, torture, and war for private financial gain.

And what do we see this December, just days away from a celebration of Christmas?!? More wars, and rumors of wars, both fiscal (as in the agreement with the Saudi government to keep oil prices artificially low to destroy Russia's economy), and shooting wars as well.

I care very deeply about the future of this country, but feel that we are moving in absolutely the wrong directions, in both domestic and foreign policies.

And unfortunately, one of the key prerequisites for working for the last several administrations has been a pathological, intellectually myopic inability to think any action through to its logical conclusion.

Looking at the current situation in Iraq; in Afghanistan; in Libya; and in Yemen, one can very clearly see the outcome of this kind of thinking.

US elite has gone far beyond Hitler's impudence and cruelty

Brutal and bloody provocations are a tool of choice of USA's politics. US intelligence greyhounds have taken a hand in white powder from Iraq, in September 11 attacks and torture. These are not conspiracy theories - this is real politics, President of the Academy of Geopolitical Problems and military analyst Konstantin Sivkov believes.

"They have recently published the torture report in the United States, even though those tortures were not happening on the territory of the United States. Only 500 pages of the 6,000-page report have been published. It is unthinkable what US special services were doing to those suspects after the attacks of the Twin Towers. State Department officials said that no one would be punished for any of those tortures. Do you think that the world community will turn a blind eye on that again and continue to admire American democracy?"

Webmaster's Commentary:

Nope!

Dog Torture at Bottom of CIA Scandal

In Part 1 of Seligman and Steve Maier’s experiment, three groups of dogs were placed in harnesses. Group 1 dogs were simply put in the harnesses for a period of time and later released. Groups 2 and 3 consisted of “yoked pairs.” A dog in Group 2 would be intentionally subjected to pain by being given electric shocks, which the dog could end by pressing a lever. A Group 3 dog was wired in series with a Group 2 dog, receiving shocks of identical intensity and duration, but his lever did not stop the electric shocks. To a dog in Group 3, it seemed that the shock ended at random, because it was his paired dog in Group 2 that was causing it to stop. For Group 3 dogs, the shock was apparently “inescapable.” Group 1 and Group 2 dogs quickly recovered from the experience, but Group 3 dogs learned to be helpless, and exhibited symptoms similar to chronic clinical depression.

CLG Exclusive: CIA Torture Queen Bought $825K House While Torturing Her Way to the Top

The redacted (525 of 6,700 pages) C.I.A. torture report has revealed possible war crimes and violations of the Nuremberg ban on human experimentation by C.I.A. agents and U.S. military contractors. On December 19, 2014, journalists Glenn Greenwald and Peter Maass revealed the name of the C.I.A. senior officer at the center of the C.I.A.'s torture scandals: Alfreda Frances Bikowsky.

Now, CLG can report that Alfreda Bikowsky purchased (and likely still lives in) a well-appointed ranch house in Mclean, Virginia. Nestled in a wooded lot at 1437 Brookhaven Drive, the well-concealed house is a short 19-minute, 12-mile commute to the Central Intelligence Agency in Reston, Virginia. Formerly owned by Michael E. Geltner, the property was sold to Bikowsky for a mere $825,000 by realtor Michael Chang in April of 2012.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Bikowsky was a senior staff member at the Bin Laden Issue Station in January 2000.[14] She was the direct supervisor of Michael Anne Casey, a CIA staff operations officer who was assigned to track future 9/11 hijacker Khalid al-Mihdhar at an al-Qaeda operatives' meeting in Malaysia in early January 2000.[8] Casey blocked a draft cable written by Doug Miller, a FBI agent detailed to the Bin Laden Issue Station, to the FBI warning that al-Mihdhar had a multiple-entry visa for travel to the U.S.[15][16](p240) Mark Rossini, another FBI agent first assigned to the Bin Laden Issue Station in 1999,[16](p233) testifies that Casey also verbally ordered him to not share information with FBI headquarters about al-Mihdhar or Nawaf al-Hazmi, who was traveling with al-Mihdhar.[1][17] Rossini further states that Bikowsky told congressional investigators in 2002 that she hand-delivered al-Mihdhar's visa information to FBI headquarters. This was later proven false by FBI log books.[1] The CIA shared some details about al-Mihdhar with the FBI at that time, but not that he had a valid visa to enter the U.S.[16](pp244–7)

Interrogation of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed

Bikowsky has been identified as "the redheaded former Soviet analyst who had been in the Bin Laden Unit during Michael Scheuer's supervision"[7](p273) in Jane Mayer's book, The Dark Side.[8] After Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was captured in March 2003, Mayer writes of Bikowsky:

Despite the CIA's insistence on the professionalism of its interrogation program, according to two well-informed Agency sources, one particularly overzealous female officer had to be reprimanded for her role. After Mohammed was captured, the woman, who headed the Al Qaeda unit in the CTC, was so excited she flew at government expense to the black site where Mohammed was held so that she could personally watch him being waterboarded. ... Coworkers said she had no legitimate reason to be present during Mohammed's interrogation. She was not an interrogator. "She thought it would be cool to be in the room," a former colleague said. (p. 273)[7]

Israel Breaks Cease-Fire by Bombing Gaza

Israel’s airstrikes violate the cease-fire that followed the country’s “Protective Edge” military attacks on Gaza earlier this year.

Israeli warplanes launched two airstrikes in eastern Al-Qarara - Khanyounis city, teleSUR’s correspondent in Gaza Noor Harazeen reported.

She said the rocket fire, a “violation of the truce” following Israel’s Protective Edge bombing campaign earlier this year, “is one of the most serious attacks on Gaza.”

Other people in the area have reported that there are blackouts in part of Gaza, such as Khan Younis.

Webmaster's Commentary:

You need to ask yourself if Palestine would fire a single rocket into Israel just as the resolutions on Palestine are about to go before the Security Council. And a moment's thought suggests that Palestine is not that stupid and this is another Israel false-flag.

John Kerry already indicated the US would veto all Palestinian Resolutions, but this is uncomfortable for the US Government as it underscores that they are slaves to Israel. Better for the US and better for Israel if the resolutions are "interrupted."

Hence an Israeli collaborator in Israel fires a fireworks rocket into an empty lot in Israel and Israel uncorks a new major military offensive as their "Final Solution to the Palestinian Question."

US rebuked foreign governments for using the same torture methods as the CIA was using

So the CIA doesn’t consider “waterboarding” — mock execution by near drowning — to be torture, but the U.S. State Department does.

State Department reports from 2003 to 2007 concluded that Sri Lanka’s use of “near-drowning” of detainees was among “methods of torture.” Its reports on Tunisia from 1996 to 2004 classified “submersion of the head in water” as “torture.” In fact, the U.S. military has prosecuted variants of waterboarding for more than 100 years — going back to the U.S. occupation of the Philippines in the early 1900s.

Leaked Internal CIA Document Admits US Drone Program “Counterproductive” … Obama Did It ANYWAY

Obama Knew Drone Strikes Were Counter-Productive, But Did It Anyway

Previously-leaked documents showed that the CIA warned Obama that funding rebels doesn’t work … but Obama decided to fund the Syrian rebels anyway for cynical political gain.

Top CIA officers say that drone strikes increase terrorism (and see this). Indeed, virtually all aspects of the American “war on terror” strategy creates more terrorists and weakens our national security. And see this.

Now, a leaked internal CIA memo shows that the Agency told Obama that drone strikes might be counter-productive.

The Folks Guide to Enhanced Interrogation Techniques

Now that the CIA’s infamous “torture report” has finally gone public, it’s time to speak of Enhanced Interrogation Techniques (EIT) and what folks need to know about it.

First of all, EIT is actually the sound folks make when trying to breathe on the waterboard. It’s an inside joke. Yeah, they tortured some folks… but not to gain intelligence, since they know torture doesn’t work for that. Getting some poor devil to confess under torture is not that hard, heck, they got folks to confess to the murder of Elvis and even had one guy who swore he had been laden (haven’t we all?). You see, when someone is shoving a tube up folk’s asset for Enhanced Rectal Interrogation while choking them to death, chances are folks will say pretty much anything at all to end the torture. That’s not intelligence, that’s despair. And the officials who ordered and carried out the torture are quite aware of this fact.

Napoleon vs. Cheney: 'Interrogation That Actually Works'; Icing on the 'Hate-Cake'

Not only is torture against international law, it also produces no useful intelligence. Common sense is enough to prove that statement.

If someone threatened to rape your sister, kill your mom, or shackled you until you were half-dead while feeding you up your anus, you would say nearly anything to ease the pain. So would I, and so would everyone else. Anyone who disagrees is either a liar or a fool.

Even Napoleon recognized that fact.
