The deep racism of imperial intervention

Racism in western societies is often spoken of as something involving simple discrimination or prejudice. Yet the most profound racism has always been generated and sustained by imperialism, including colonial rule and, in the post-colonial era, imperial intervention.
Tim Anderson
Denying the very existence and integrity of other peoples requires ideologies of systematic exclusion and dehumanisation. That denial is implicit in every coup, proxy war or invasion, under whatever pretext, carried out either for 'regime change' or to divide and weaken those peoples not well embedded in the imperial orbit.

CIA photos of ‘black sites’ could complicate Guantanamo trials

Military prosecutors this year learned about a massive cache of CIA photographs of its former overseas “black sites” while reviewing material collected for the Senate investigation of the agency’s interrogation program, U.S. officials said.

The existence of the approximately 14,000 photographs will probably cause yet another delay in the military commissions at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as attorneys for the defendants demand that all the images be turned over and the government wades through the material to decide what it thinks is relevant to the proceedings.

Defense attorneys said they have not yet been informed about the photographs and said it is unacceptable that they should come to light now, more than three years after the arraignment of Khalid Sheik Mohammed and four other defendants accused of planning the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A memo to those defending these men: a delay is what the CIA, White House, Pentagon, and State Department want!

And the reason I am certain of this is that, for some of these men, waterboarding was not the worst thing done to these men to get them to confess.

As reported in theguardian.com, on 1 August, 2005:

Benyam Mohammed travelled from London to Afghanistan in July 2001, but after September 11 he fled to Pakistan. He was arrested at Karachi airport on April 10 2002, and describes being flown by a US government plane to a prison in Morocco. These are extracts from his diary. They cut off my clothes with some kind of doctor's scalpel. I was naked. I tried to put on a brave face. But maybe I was going to be raped. Maybe they'd electrocute me. Maybe castrate me. They took the scalpel to my right chest. It was only a small cut. Maybe an inch. At first I just screamed ... I was just shocked, I wasn't expecting ... Then they cut my left chest. This time I didn't want to scream because I knew it was coming. One of them took my penis in his hand and began to make cuts. He did it once, and they stood still for maybe a minute, watching my reaction. I was in agony. They must have done this 20 to 30 times, in maybe two hours. There was blood all over. "I told you I was going to teach you who's the man," [one] eventually said. They cut all over my private parts. One of them said it would be better just to cut it off, as I would only breed terrorists. I asked for a doctor. Doctor No 1 carried a briefcase. "You're all right, aren't you? But I'm going to say a prayer for you." Doctor No 2 gave me an Alka-Seltzer for the pain. I told him about my penis. "I need to see it. How did this happen?" I told him. He looked like it was just another patient. "Put this cream on it two times a day. Morning and night." He gave me some kind of antibiotic. I was in Morocco for 18 months. Once they began this, they would do it to me about once a month. One time I asked a guard: "What's the point of this? I've got nothing I can say to them. I've told them everything I possibly could." "As far as I know, it's just to degrade you. So when you leave here, you'll have these scars and you'll never forget. So you'll always fear doing anything but what the US wants."

Folks, in the name of extracting confessions through torture for stuff people did not do, your government signed off on torture, and made it "acceptible" for inquisitors to do this, just as the Catholic church wrote off torture years ago, and made it acceptible for torturers in those times to torture people into confessing to things they didn't do.

This goes all the way up the food chain, and when President Obama made that obscene comment about "looking forward instead of looking backward" comment about the legal ramifications of torture, and that the unholy trinity of Bush, Rumsfeld, and Cheney would never be looking at prosecution for their crimes against humanity, you had to know that the fix was in.

The torture of Benyam Mohammed for crimes he did not commit is how the world now sees the United States of America; wicked, monstrous, vicious in its pursuit of money and resources for the money junkies, and with absolutely zero morality whatsoever.

Every time a US drone strike is called against some alleged bad guy who apparently cannot possibly be tried in a court of law (perhaps, there is no real evidence, other than the President having said, "he needs to be assassinated!") the collateral damage to the moral reputation of this country becomes highly severe.

This government kills innocent people, women, children, and the elderly medically infirm, with impunity, and wonders how and why people can become radicalized against this violence?!?

The drone strikes, coupled with the US government's support of countries where we maintain a cozy relationship with leadership which consistently brutalizes and suppresses its own people, are a radical recruiter's wet dream.

But I frankly do not believe that this has been lost on those in the bowels of power in DC. In fact, they are continuing the practice of drown strikes to create a permanent state of war in this world, where the true beneficial is the US's military industrial complex.

Shalabi, one of the first prisoners brought to Guantánamo in January 2002, was never charged with a crime. FLASHBACK - Israel, Genocide, and the ‘Logic’ of Zionism

History is full of ironies: World War I, marketed to Americans as a "war to end all wars," paved the way for an even more massive slaughter. The invasion and conquest of Iraq – which was supposed to augur what George W. Bush hailed as a "global democratic revolution" – instead ushered in a new era of chaos, bloodshed, and tyranny in the region. And in the year 2014, the state of Israel, founded in large part as a reaction to the Holocaust, has embarked on a policy of genocide in Gaza.

The Israelis and their international amen corner are increasingly open about this: a recent article in the Times of Israel – since taken down – was quite explicit in averring that Israel’s "right of self-defense" includes the option of wiping out the entire population of Gaza:

French spies secretly organized and funded the Libyan rebels who defeated Moammar Gadhafi, according to confidential emails to Hillary Clinton that were made public on June 22. According to one entry from March 22, 2011, “officers” with the General Directorate for External Security — the French intelligence service — “began a series of secret meetings” with Jalil and Gen. Abdul Fatah Younis in Benghazi in late February and gave them “money and guidance” to set up the council, whose formation was announced Feb. 27. Today I Saw a Weeping Palestinian Man Holding a Plastic Bag of Meat: It Was His Son

I sense I’m breaking an unspoken rule with this letter, but I can’t keep quiet any more.

Today I saw a picture of a weeping Palestinian man holding a plastic carrier bag of meat. It was his son. He’d been shredded (the hospital’s word) by an Israeli missile attack – apparently using their fab new weapon, flechette bombs. You probably know what those are – hundreds of small steel darts packed around explosive which tear the flesh off humans. The boy was Mohammed Khalaf al-Nawasra. He was 4 years old.

I suddenly found myself thinking that it could have been one of my kids in that bag, and that thought upset me more than anything has for a long time.

Then I read that the UN had said that Israel might be guilty of war crimes in Gaza, and they wanted to launch a commission into that. America won’t sign up to it.

What is going on in America?

New evidence from 1967 war reveals Israeli atrocities

In the wake of the June 1967 war, the Israeli author Amos Oz, then a reserve soldier in the Israeli army, together with a friend collated interviews with Israeli soldiers who participated in the war and asked them about the emotions the fighting triggered in them. The interviews were published as a book titled Conversations with Soldiers, more popularly referred at the time by my generation as the ”shooting and crying” book.

The military censor (a function that still exists today, held recently by the present minister of culture, Miri Regev), erased 70 percent of the evidence since he claimed it would have harmed Israel’s international image.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Reader comment: PBS news hour reported this story yesterday. The final word on this story was that the United States said, that he was a person of interest. Judge, jury, and executioner for a PERSON of interest. This kind of policy will kill many innocent people. Terrorism recruitment will flourish under this policy, but that is actually their goal. Continued wars; acquisition of land and resources, and installing military bases to control the regions. They can not steal during times of peace can they? Jeb Bush will continue the need for wars philosophy. "The terrorists want to take what little freedoms we have left".

THE UN’s BLURRED VISION

Israel systematically targeted Palestinian residential buildings and infrastructure without any apparent military justification. The horror of what Israel did, detailed in the 183-page report, cannot be adequately summarized here.

In total, 2,251 Palestinians were killed, including 1,462 Palestinian civilians, among them 551 children, the report states. More than 11,000 Palestinians, including 3,540 women and 3,436 children, were injured with almost 10 percent suffering permanent disabilities.

Six civilians died in Israel and more than 60 Israeli soldiers died in fighting with the Palestinian resistance.

But a key finding is that the mass destruction and killing inflicted by Israel, often amounting to war crimes, “may have constituted military tactics reflective of a broader policy, approved at least tacitly by decision-makers at the highest levels of the Government of Israel.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

'Anti-Israel mandate': UN human rights envoy blocked from entering Gaza

Israeli authorities have admitted they blocked a UN human rights envoy from entering the occupied Gaza area for a second year in a row, just as a UN report on last year’s Gaza war is about to be made public.

"We didn't allow this visit," said Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon, as cited by AFP. The visit by the UN special rapporteur on human rights, Makarim Wibisono, was due to take place last week.

However, according to Nahshon, the decision doesn’t go against Israel’s commitments to the UN. “Israel cooperates with all the international commissions and all rapporteurs, except when the mandate handed to them is anti-Israeli and Israel has no chance to make itself heard."

Senate votes to ban use of torture

The Senate on Tuesday overwhelmingly voted to ban the U.S. from ever again subjecting prisoners to waterboarding, “rectal feeding” and other brutal interrogation practices widely condemned as torture.

In a 78-21 vote, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle supported a new prohibition on "enhanced interrogation" practices and other novel detention methods.

“We must continue to insist that the methods we employ in this fight for peace and freedom must always, always, be as right and honorable as the goals and ideals we fight for,” said Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), chairman of the Armed Services Committee and an author of the amendment.
“Our enemies act without conscience. We must not.”

CIA DIRECTOR BRENNAN DENOUNCED BY PROFS AT HIS ALMA MATER OVER TORTURE SCANDAL

A cohort of faculty at Fordham University dedicated to opposing torture have vehemently denounced CIA Director John Brennan for defending enhanced interrogation techniques used in the wake of Sept. 11 and have pledged to continue their criticisms of Brennan in the coming school year.

Brennan, an alumnus of Fordham who in 1977 earned a bachelor’s degree in political science at the private Jesuit university in New York, was also given an honorary degree by the college in 2012 when he was commencement speaker there.

At the time, his address received some protest, with one graduate launching a Change.org petition calling for Brennan’s removal as speaker, and roughly 10 to 15 audience members turning their backs to Brennan during his talk, according to the Fordham Ram campus newspaper.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The American far-right’s trojan horse in Westminster; Elites are using the Henry Jackson Society to sell surveillance, war, white supremacism, banks, and misogyny

There is a violent extremist fifth column operating at the heart of power in Britain, and they stand against everything we hold dear in Western democracies: civil liberties, equality, peace, diplomacy and the rule of law. You wouldn’t think so at first glance. In fact, you might be taken in by their innocuous-looking spokespeople, railing against the threat of Muslim extremists, defending the rights of beleaguered Muslim women, championing the principle of free speech?—?regularly courted by national TV and the press as informed experts on global policy issues. But peer beneath the surface, and an entirely different picture emerges: a web of self-serving trans-Atlantic elites who are attempting to warp public discourse on key issues that pose a threat not to the public interest, but to their own vested interests.

Voting for your own executioner!

At this point in time, the myth of the United States of America as a good and decent country has been pretty much vaporized by the constant betrayal of its own citizens and its neverending attacks on the rest of the world. I mean, with a leadership that supervised the demolition of its two tallest buildings as a pretext for making war on the world, abandoned its own people by deliberately sending most of its jobs overseas, and lastly, is about to round up and dispose of all its dissenters in the name of falsified terror threats, how could anyone with a functioning brain lend any degree of support to this political monster in Washington that is clearly and deliberately eating its own tail?

And to make it perfectly clear — deliberately destroying its own country at the behest of a demonic foreign power!

Israeli Special Units Brutally Attack Sick Prisoner

Israeli soldiers from the Nahshon special unit Sunday severely assaulted a sick Palestinian prisoner, while he was being transferred to hospital to undergo medical examination.

Prisoner Mohammed Abd Rabo, 29, told a Palestinian Prisoner’s Club (PPC) lawyer, who visited him in the Israeli Nafha jail following the assault, that around 20 soldiers from Nahshon unit severally assualted him for asking them to untie his hands and feet during his transfer to Soroka Medical Center, in Israel, for medical examination.

He said that soldiers brutally attacked him and threw him on the floor before sending him back to jail without taking him to hospital.

Abd Rabo, who was sentenced to 16 years in jail, suffers from what he described as unbearable pain due to chronic stomach pain and vomiting. He said that the Israeli prison administration only provides him with over the counter pain killers.

John Oliver and Helen Mirren destroy Americans’ fairy-tale belief in torture with horrifying children’s tales

On HBO’s Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver took up the unpleasant, and unfortunately mostly ignored, topic of torture in America done under the auspices of the CIA.

Noting that the Senate Intelligence Committee released a 6,700-page investigation of torture, with a 500-page version available to the public, Oliver sought to explain that Americans need to read the available version because they have been “dangerously misinformed” about torture.

With a CBS poll showing the 69 percent of Americans believing that waterboarding is torture and 57 percent believing “aggressive” interrogation techniques help stop terrorist attacks, Oliver set out to point out that not only doesn’t torture work — it may make a comeback since it is only restricted by executive order, which can be tossed out by the next president.

Webmaster's Commentary:

When the US government tortures, or outsources torture, the following happens.

1. The world understands that those values of human decency, democracy, and human rights are only words, and not respected values by this country's government.
2. That every US politician who uses these words, and then backs torture, is a hypocrite of the highest order.
3. The use of torture by the US gives carte blanche to any world leader who doesn't much like us to do the same to American citizens or American military.

Please chew on this last one for awhile, particularly if you have friends or family serving in the US military.

CIA torture appears to have broken spy agency rule on human experimentation

CIA director George Tenet approved abusive interrogation techniques, including waterboarding, designed by CIA contractor psychologists. He further instructed the agency’s health personnel to oversee the brutal interrogations – the beginning of years of controversy, still ongoing, about US torture as a violation of medical ethics.

But the revelation of the guidelines has prompted critics of CIA torture to question how the agency could have ever implemented what it calls “enhanced interrogation techniques” – despite apparently having rules against “research on human subjects” without their informed consent.

When a Government Declares Memories Classified

For years, Guantanamo Bay prisoners’ memories of their time in CIA custody have been considered classified state secrets. Abu Zubaydah's lawyers can’t talk publicly about how he lost his left eye. Lawyers for Mustafa al Hawsawi, who can now only sit on a pillow, can’t tell the press or the public about anal feedings that left him with a rectal prolapse. And until recently, Majid Khan's lawyers couldn’t bring up the time he was hung from a pole for two days, naked and hooded, while interrogators threw ice water on him.

CHILD ABUSE ~~ WHAT THE UN REFUSES TO SEE

Israeli Military Torturing Palestinian Children ~viewer discretion~

Jun 10 13:46

THE UN WAS RIGHT! ISRAEL DOES NOT ABUSE CHILDREN, IT JUST MURDERS THEM!

Throughout its unglamorous history, the UN issued many scandalous reports and adopted many scandalous resolutions reflecting lack of justice and absence of moral honesty. This ever-existing symptom also reflected western hegemony over the international organization.

However, none of these reports and resolutions seems more scandalous than this week’s report which kept Israel off the List of Shame, which includes states and entities that abuse children.

This particular report is manifestly scandalous precisely because Israel is probably one of the most obscene abusers of children under the sun.

Indeed, there are a few countries in this world that can be compared to Israel in this respect.

Israel Seeks to Criminalize Criticism

As a consequence, Israel’s credibility with an increasing number of people in the West has eroded. This erosion led to a relatively short period of time in the early 2000s when the Zionists attempted to counter the situation by engaging with their critics in public debate. However, the majority of time they lost.

Israel’s barbarous behavior on the ground, combined with the fact that their historical version of events was shown to be full of holes, condemned them to an increasingly weak defensive position. This proved to be intolerable to the Zionists, so they withdrew from the debating field.

And, as they did, they began to level charges of anti-Semitism against their critics, even those who are Jewish. These accusations of the worst sort of racism have been with us ever since – which is really ironic because much of what Israel is being criticized for is its own racist, apartheid nature.

The Case Against Re-Banning Torture Yet Again, Again

Senator McCain and friends have a new push on to once again ban torture (except for exceptions in the Army Field Manual) that is being presented as an effort to preempt future Republican presidents' torturing. This reinforces two false beliefs. One is that torture is not ongoing today under President Peace Prize. The other is that torture wasn't banned before George W. Bush was ever selected by the Supreme Court.

Last December, Senator Ron Wyden had a petition up at MoveOn.org that read "Right now, torture is banned because of President Obama's executive order. It's time for Congress to pass a law banning torture, by all agencies, so that a future president can never revoke the ban." This is the same mythology being pushed by McCain yet again.

CIA Director: Blowback is Real

CIA Director John Brennan is not known as a big defender of the Constitution. He is regarded as a chief proponent of the CIA's torture program and as "Obama's drone warrior." He also lied to the American people with claims that not "a single collateral death" occurred in the CIA's drone program because of the "exceptional proficiency [and] precision" of the targeting.

However even a professional obfuscator can sometimes inadvertently reveal some of the truth. As reported in the Intercept, in a recent appearance on "Face the Nation" the CIA boss admitted that US foreign policy can feed terrorism.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Nobody gets up one day and decides to be a terrorist for no reason. They don't hate us for our freedoms. They hate us and commit acts of terror because one day, as they are going about their normal lives, there is a horrendous blast and people they have known all their lives are lying in bloody shreds at their feet, mixed in with shrapnel stamped "Made in the USA."

Washington’s Death Squads

In a lengthy article published Sunday, the New York Times provided a glimpse into the criminal and grisly methods employed by Seal Team 6, a secret unit within the Pentagon’s Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC).

The unit was made famous by the phony accounts of its assassination of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, cover stories that were blown last month by veteran journalist Seymour Hersh, who exposed the operation as the cold-blooded murder of an unarmed and decrepit individual who had been fingered by Pakistani intelligence.

What the Times account makes clear—whatever the newspaper’s intentions and its undoubted vetting of its material with the Pentagon and the White House—is that in the pursuit of its global interests, the United States government has become ever more dependent upon the murderous operations of secret death squads.

UN’s Ban Ki-moon caves in, takes Israel off list of serious child abusers

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has caved in to pressure from Israel and the United States and taken the Israeli military off an official list of serious violators of children’s rights, in this year’s report on children in armed conflict.

In doing so, Ban rejected an official recommendation from his own Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict Leila Zerrougui and numerous human rights organizations and child rights defenders.

Ban’s act is particularly egregious since the report found that the number of children killed in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip in 2014, at 557, was the third highest only after Iraq and Afghanistan and ahead of Syria.

UN spurns Palestinian children

Ban Ki-moon’s decision not to include Israel on the list of violators of children’s rights twists the knife in the heart of every Palestinian parent, making it very clear that in the eyes of the United Nations, Palestinian children’s lives don’t count.

When a military with the most sophisticated and accurate weaponry on the planet can kill more than 500 children in cold blood with complete impunity, as Israel’s absence from the list shows, it reveals more than just the complete disregard for Palestinian lives that has become so commonplace in the halls of power. It also makes it abundantly clear that the UN, the single most important international organisation charged with protecting the lives of the most vulnerable, is failing spectacularly.

Yemen Becomes Front Line in US Drone War

Ebad al-Shabwani was driving his vehicle late one evening last month along the road between Safir and the ancient ruins of Mahram Bilqis in the remote Wadi Abeeda area of Yemen’s central Marib district. His family claims he was, at 16 years old, the youngest in a ride he was sharing with friends.

Precisely what happened next is unclear. What is known is that, out of the darkness, a United States armed drone appeared in the vicinity. It had most likely taken off hours earlier from the US Expeditionary Naval Base at Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti, across the Gulf of Aden, and had located its target. The drone fired on the vehicle with between one and three Hellfire missiles, scoring a direct hit. Shabwani and as many as three others were killed.

Secret Directive 11 codifies Islamists takeover of ME, Muslim Brotherhood Alliance with Obama

Directive 11 brought together activists and operatives at multiple agencies to come up with a “tailored” approach for regime change in each country. The goal was to “manage” the political transitions. It tossed aside American national security interests by insisting that Islamist regimes would be equally committed to fighting terrorism and cooperating with Israel. Its greatest gymnastic feat may have been arguing that the best way to achieve political stability in the region was through regime change.

What little we know about the resulting classified 18-page report is that it used euphemisms to call for aiding Islamist takeovers in parts of the Middle East. Four countries were targeted. Of those four, we only know for certain that Egypt and Yemen were on the list. But we do know for certain the outcome.

Meanwhile, ISIS has been found across the border in Mexico.

UN Secretary-General weighs lumping Israel in with ISIS and Al Qaeda

The organization has no right to expect billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars to be doled out every year when they are spent undercutting our deepest values and our national security.

Webmaster's Commentary:

IDF strikes Gaza after at least two rockets fired toward southern Israel

Israel Air Force jets struck Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip early Thursday morning, after at least two rockets were fired from the Strip at southern Israel on Wednesday evening. Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon vowed to "strike harder if we must," to stop sporadic rocket fire from resuming.

No casualties or injuries by the rocket fire were reported. Rocket sirens were sounded in several communities in southern Israel near the northern Gaza border. Two rockets exploded in an open area near the Gaza border, the Sdot Negev Regional Council reported, though the IDF said it is still searching for the rockets' landing sites.

After the rocket fire, Israel Air Force jets struck three "terror infrastructure" targets in the Gaza Strip, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

Israeli defense officials believe that the militants responsible for the rocket fire belong to a "rogue group."

Webmaster's Commentary:

In other words, this is the usual Israeli pattern. Use agents provocateurs to launch untraceable home made rockets into empty dirt lots in Israel to justify air strikes and naval bombardment of Gaza.

Sunbathing at the crime scene: the Israeli resort that covers up a massacre

For Palestinians, Tantura, the name of a coastal village south of Haifa that was once home to 1,700 inhabitants, has become a byword for the darkest episodes of the Nakba (Arabic for catastrophe), the ethnic cleansing of 1948.

For Israelis, the site is referred to by a different name — Dor, known as a popular beach resort belonging to two neighboring kibbutzim, Dor and Nahsholim, an hour’s drive north of Tel Aviv.

'I Wished They Had Killed Me': CIA Detainee Torture Account Declassified

A Guantanamo Bay detainee turned government witness has accused the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of using even more disturbing forms of torture and abuse during secret interrogations than were included in the U.S. Senate’s redacted report last year.

CIA torture more 'brutal and sadistic' than Senate report disclosed

The CIA’s use of torture was far more “brutal and sadistic” than was disclosed in last year’s controversial US Senate report into the agency’s interrogation techniques, according to new information from a Guantanamo Bay detainee.

The newly declassified accounts of the torture of Majid Khan, a so-called "high value detainee", describe in graphic detail how he was sexually assaulted, hung from a beam for several days without a break and half-drowned in tubs of freezing water.

The descriptions are contained in 27 pages of notes from interviews between Mr Khan and his legal team that were cleared for release by the US government on Tuesday, and first reported by Reuters.

Near certainty of targeted drone attacks sow death for an apology

The 2015 film "Good Kill," directed by Andrew Niccol, has placed the question of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), or drones, used in the Middle East and Islamic territories for some 10 years now and always the subject of debate because of the devastation they wreak, back on the agenda.
The film deals with attacks made using UAVs against Taliban militants in Afghanistan. However, these attacks are not directed from Afghanistan, but from a military base in Las Vegas, Nevada, thousands of kilometers away. Officers identify places and people to be bombed from images on the screens in front of them being transmitted by UAV cameras. They lock onto their targets as easily as if they were playing a computer game, and destroy them with a single press of a key.

German Federal Prosecutor ‘investigating’ US actions on drones base

The German Federal Prosecutor is reported to have begun investigating a US base in Germany that is used as a ‘hub’ for drone strikes, days after a Yemeni man testified in a Cologne court about the 2012 strike that killed his relatives.

According to a report in Der Spiegel, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office – Germany’s highest prosecuting authority – has launched a ‘monitoring process’ to ascertain whether activities at Ramstein, a US base in Germany, violate international law. The officials have reportedly requested documents from German authorities, including the Ministry of Defence, relating to the base – which was recently revealed to be a ‘hub’ for the facilitation of drone strikes in Yemen and elsewhere. US drone strikes in countries such as Yemen, where the US has not declared war, have killed hundreds of civilians, and are widely regarded as a violation of international law.

The Other Conspirator: Secret Origins of the CIA's Torture Program

The witness reported men being hung by the feet or the thumbs, waterboarded, given electric shocks to the genitals, and suffering from extended solitary confinement in what he said were indescribably inhumane conditions. It's the sort of description that might have come right out of the executive summary of the Senate torture report released last December. In this case, however, the testimony was not about a "black site" somewhere in the Greater Middle East, nor was it a description from Abu Ghraib, nor in fact from this century at all.

Vladimir Katriuk passed away last week after a long illness, Orest Rudzik said Thursday.

News of Katriuk's death emerged several hours after the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs said Ottawa should take the necessary steps to ensure that he be held accountable if he were found guilty of war crimes committed in collaboration with the Nazis.

Israel 'pressures Ban Ki-moon' to get off UN list of children's rights violators in wars

Israel is allegedly pulling diplomatic strings to pressurize the UN Secretary-General to exclude it from an annual list of countries accused of violating children's rights in armed conflicts. Israel denies the allegations.

Despite the slaughter of hundreds of Palestinian children in the IDF Israeli operation in Gaza in 2014, Tel Aviv wants to somehow preserve a squeaky clean image and is putting pressure on the UN central office to that end.

Initially, the draft of the document prepared by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon’s special envoy for children, Leila Zerrougui, included the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on the list for attacking schools and hospitals in the Gaza Strip conflict last year, Reuters reported.

An opposing side in the conflict, the Palestinian group Hamas, has also been added to the list.

Now Ban Ki-Moon is allegedly “leaning toward” omitting Israel from the list of shame, reports Reuters citing diplomatic sources.

The tribunal’s rationale is that “full disclosure of the document would have ‘an adverse effect on relations’ with Bahrain, where the U.K. is keen to build further economic and defence ties.” In other words, disclosing these facts would make the British and/or the Bahrainis look bad, cause them embarrassment, and could make their close friendship more difficult to sustain. Therefore, the British and Bahraini populations must be denied access to the evidence of what their governments did.

WRONGFULLY TREATING ACADEMIC DEBATE AS ANTI-SEMITISM

The principle of academic freedom at our universities is under attack by those seeking to shield Israel from criticism by silencing dissent, shutting down discussion and imposing a stifling atmosphere of intimidation at the University of California, in particular. A coordinated set of petitions, including a letter signed by 57 rabbis, asks UC administrators to adopt the State Department’s definition of anti-Semitism as a means to “accurately identify” and “publicly condemn” it in campus debate, protest and discussion. That problematic definition conflates principled criticism of Israeli policies with genuine anti-Semitism; if the university accedes to this demand, such criticism — and academic freedom — could be suppressed by administrative fiat.

Judge Who Blocked Release of Osama bin Laden Death Photos Now Blocks Release of US Senate Torture Report

A federal judge has thwarted an attempt to force the release of the Senate report on the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) torture program.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for the release of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s full report on the CIA interrogation program. The executive summary of the report was previously made public, albeit with numerous redactions.

But U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg rejected the ACLU’s request, ruling the report remains a congressional record and thus isn’t subject to the FOIA. When Congress created FOIA in 1966, it made sure to exempt the legislative branch from its provisions.

TOP BUSH ERA CIA OFFICIAL JUST CONFIRMED THE IRAQ WAR WAS BASED ON LIES

Twelve years after George W Bush initiated the illegal invasion of Iraq, ostensibly under the premise of preemptive self-defense, a stark majority ? as many as 75% in 2014 ? feel the so-called war was a mistake. As evidence rapidly accumulates that Bush?s yearning to launch an aggressive attack was likelier due to a personal grudge than anything else, that number will surely swell. This past Tuesday, the former president?s intelligence briefer lent yet more plausibility to that theory in an interview on MSNBC?s Hardball, making an admission that the Bush White House misrepresented intelligence reports to the public on key issues.

Video Reportedly Shows US-Backed Ukrainian Forces Hang Pregnant Woman

For an example of the atrocious violence perpetrated by the US-funded Ukrainian regime, look no further than the above video, purportedly discovered in possession of one of its fighters. The disturbingly graphic footage shows a woman in her last term of pregnancy, side by side with her husband. Both are hooded and bound, with nooses around their necks — the ropes hoisted over a makeshift beam, and tied to a truck behind them. Three Ukrainian soldiers, also wearing hoods, pose for pictures between the couple, before one of the men signals for the couple’s execution by hanging, when he taps the body of the truck.

Federal Judge: CIA Torture Report Remains Secret, ‘Not FOIA Worthy’

In January 2015, 21WIRE reported on GOP Plans to ‘Return’ Torture Documents to CIA (for shredding) led by Richard Burr, North Carolina’s pro-torture Senator, who is now openly abusing the powers of his office to hide evidence from public view. Burr asserted that these ‘secretive’ torture documents somehow ‘belong’ to the CIA, ignoring the fact they were paid for, and therefore, are the property of the American People.

A federal judge has now ruled Congress still has control of this information, and the authority to keep it ‘secret’ and exempt from the Freedom of Information Act. Score another lynchpin in Washington’s phony War on Terror.

All of this grand charade has left us wondering whether anything incriminating in this report will ever really be released to the public…

Palestinian child loses eye from rubber-coated bullet fired by Israel

A Palestinian child from occupied East Jerusalem has lost an eye after being shot in the head with a rubber-coated steel bullet fired by an Israeli soldier.

Yahiya al-Amudi, 10, was struck by the bullet as he walked near an Israeli military checkpoint in Shuafat refugee camp on Thursday last week. The boy was subsequently hospitalized “with a fractured skull, jaw and left ear and had surgery to remove his left eye,” Ma’an News Agency reports. Al-Amudi was described as being in a critical condition.

Rubber-coated steel bullets are among Israel’s so-called arsenal of “non-lethal weapons.” The Israeli human rights group B’Tselem has referred to them, however, as “less fatal” weapons.

US and Allies have Created a Transnational “Islamist” Terrorist Network, Head of Russia’s Military Intelligence (GRU)

This speech was delivered at the Moscow Security Conference in May 2015.

As a general rule, the GRU never makes a public statement, nor does the person heading it. It is thus interesting that on one of the very few occasions where General Sergun agreed to speak in public, he chose to focus on the risks of the so-called “Islamic” extremism and that in a relatively short presentation, he made four references to the fact that these “Islamic” terrorists are basically a creature of the West.

A Poem On War

Beyond the count of years I walked the world,

and my children built their shrines to me.

Decades and centuries and millennia pass,

and still the shrines are built.

Temples insubstantial to men,

clear to my eyes.

No foundations or walls or roofs,

but shrines nonetheless.

Holy ground, consecrated

Today, every day, somewhere in the world,

the earth is prepared for my coming.

My hallowed grounds are everywhere.

In valleys and on mountains,

on broad plains and deep in hidden passes,

in deserts, on city streets.

Nameless, unremembered places.

Secret Pentagon Report Reveals US “Created” ISIS As A “Tool” To Overthrow Syria’s President Assad

From the first sudden, and quite dramatic, appearance of the fanatical Islamic group known as ISIS which was largely unheard of until a year ago, on the world’s stage and which promptly replaced the worn out and tired al Qaeda as the world’s terrorist bogeyman, we suggested that the “straight to beheading YouTube clip” purpose behind the Saudi Arabia-funded Islamic State was a simple one: use the Jihadists as the vehicle of choice to achieve a political goal: depose of Syria’s president Assad, who for years has stood in the way of a critical Qatari natural gas pipeline, one which could dethrone Russia as Europe’s dominant – and belligerent – source of energy, reaching an interim climax with the unsuccessful Mediterranean Sea military build up of 2013, which nearly resulted in quasi-world war.

Hope – versus Neoliberalism – an Ode to Solidarity

The new apparent Hope – is it what my friend Finian Cunningham says – the first ‘eye blinking’ by Washington facing Russia?

We are so thirsty for hope, hope for another, more just, more equitable world, we see hope in the first ‘blinking of an eye’. Hope is good. Hope is the basis for action. And action must be the consequence of hope – hope that not all is lost. Action to break that impasse of neoliberal all-engulfing greed must be simple. We have become strangers to ourselves. We must return to our roots, recognizing where and why we failed to diagnose the beast. Our awakened, re-kindled sense of consciousness may lead us to what we have lost – our inherent sense of solidarity.

Let’s hope together for that to happen – to happen soon, for the suffering is too great to endure much longer. We, the 99.99 % have it in our power to stop this misery and save our planet.
