Koch-Funded Economist Wants “Less Democracy”

Dr. Garett Jones is wary of democracy. He is Associate Professor of Economics and BB&T Professor for the Study of Capitalism at the Mercatus Center, “the world’s premier university source for market-oriented ideas,” at George Mason University, you see. He wants “less democracy.” He, like so many of his academic colleagues, writes scholarly articles in prestigious economics journals, extolling the virtues of moralless, unmitigated greed and absolute plutocratic tyranny. And it just so happens that that inconvenient “democracy” thing is an “inefficient” burden on the path toward a society based on these principles.

3 Very Real Reason Why Lower Oil Prices Could Be The Catalyst For World War III

It is no secret that both oil super powers, Saudi Arabia and the current presidential administration of the United States would welcome the replacement of Russian President Vladimir Putin with someone more to their liking.

With Russia’s economy built almost entirely upon oil, the falling prices of oil will most certainly weaken and ultimately threaten the economic health of one of the most powerful countries on the planet.

With the economic hardships of 1998 still fresh in the minds of many Russian citizens, applying strategic pressure by releasing a glut of oil onto the world market is a move that quickly forces oil prices to drop sharply and could easily result in problems at the poll for Putin in the next election

Exclusive: TSA’s Secret Behavior Checklist to Spot Terrorists

The checklist ranges from the mind-numbingly obvious, like “appears to be in disguise,” which is worth three points, to the downright dubious, like a bobbing Adam’s apple. Many indicators, like “trembling” and “arriving late for flight,” appear to confirm allegations that the program picks out signs and emotions that are common to many people who fly.

US CONFIRMS INVOLVEMENT IN COORDINATING SAUDI ATTACK ON YEMEN

The White House has confirmed today that they are in contact with the Saudi Arabian government, and coordinating with them on the ongoing attack and pending invasion of Yemen. The scope of US involvement in the war is still being fleshed out, but for now, President Obama has authorized the Pentagon to provide “logistical and intelligence support” to the Saudis, according to National Security Council officials.

BBC Foreknowledge of 9/11 Collapse of WTC Building Seven: British Man Won Law Suit against BBC for 9/11 Cover Up

Tony Rooke, in an act of civil disobedience, refused to pay the mandatory £130 TV license fee claiming it violates Section 15 of the Terrorism Act. Rooke’s accusation was aimed at the BBC who reported the collapse of WTC 7 over 20 minutes before it actually fell, and the judge accepted Rooke’s argument. While it was not a public inquiry into 9/11, the recognition of the BBC’s actions on September 11th are considered a small victory, one that was never reported in the US.

“Today was an historic day for the 9/11 truth movement,” Peter Drew of AE911Truth UK told Digital Journal, “with over 100 members of the public attending, including numerous journalists from around the UK as well as from across other parts of Europe.”

Ron Paul: How Will the Yemeni Civil War End?

This idea that we can run an Empire with military threats, missiles, and economic sanctions is a fallacy.

The Civil War in Yemen is rapidly expanding. We have been forced to close our embassy and military base located there. It is now clear that Obama’s optimism for fighting terrorism in Yemen was misplaced. It hardly sets a standard for dealing with constant conflict and chaos throughout the Middle East.

So far the various factions that we have supported over the years have been poor choices, as usual.

Hopefully someday our government officials will wake up. The counterinsurgency doctrine that was supposed to be the answer to all our military shortcomings is a total failure.

Chickenpox: Mom furious after school sends son home

A Birmingham mother is furious after her sixth-grade son was sent home from class today because he's not fully vaccinated against chickenpox.

One of Michael Donovan's classmates is among three students in the district who is infected.

"I wasn't vaccinated, and I don't think it's fair that I can't go to school," Michael, 11, said after his mother, Sarah, was called to the school to pick him up.

Leaving the school, she said she was "beyond not happy," referring to a district spokeswoman's comment earlier this week that some parents were not happy with the decision to exclude unvaccinated children from schools with confirmed chickenpox cases.

Hillary Tells Media What Words They Can’t Use To Describe Her

Here are the forbidden words: polarizing, calculating, disingenuous, insincere, ambitious, inevitable, entitled, overconfident, secretive, will do anything to win, represents the past, and out of touch.

The lengths to which the totalitarian Democratic party will go in order to control others is astounding. These people are nothing but Marxist operators. What’s the difference between Hillary and Chavez or your favorite dictator? Both attempted to control other people to promote their agenda.

The real problem, however, is that the mainstream media will most likely go along with Hillary’s request. They will fear being called sexist. They will do the Clintons’ bidding. And millions of low-information voters in America will not get the full story of what this woman is like.

COURT ACCEPTS DOJ’S ‘STATE SECRETS’ CLAIM TO PROTECT SHADOWY NEOCONS: A NEW LOW

At the center of it is an anti-Iranian group calling itself “United Against Nuclear Iran” (UANI), which is very likely a front for some combination of the Israeli and U.S. intelligence services. When launched, NBC described its mission as waging “economic and psychological warfare” against Iran. The group was founded and is run and guided by a roster of U.S., Israeli and British neocon extremists such as Joe Lieberman, former Bush Homeland Security adviser (and current CNN “analyst”) Fran Townsend, former CIA Director James Woolsey, and former Mossad Director Meir Dagan. One of its key advisers is Olli Heinonen, who just co-authored a Washington Post Op-Ed with former Bush CIA/NSA Director Michael Hayden arguing that Washington is being too soft on Tehran.

Turkey Devolves Into A Full Police State: Law Grants Unlimited Powers To Weaponized Police Force

While a source of much schadenfreude by its neighbors and casual onlookers, Turkey has become a glaring example of what happens to a formerly respectable nation as it devolves entirely into a banana republic with not only authoritarian overtones but a police state to boot. And earlier today, Turkey's conversion to a full blown police state was complete when, after weeks of heated debates and brawls in parliament, Turkey’s government passed a security package expanding police powers, along with an online surveillance law and a discretionary fund for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to fund covert operations.

NSA and Facebook Work Together

Earlier this week the European Commission’s attorney Bernhard Schima told the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) the US-EU Safe Harbor framework does not work.

The framework process supposedly protects personal data. In 2013, however, it was discovered the NSA and its British counterpart — the GCHQ, short for Government Communications Headquarters — had siphoned off data transfers by tapping directly into under sea cable networks.

In fact, according to a lawyer representing the Austrian government before the CJEU, Safe Harbor is better suited for pirates than the protection of data of EU citizens. In other words, the system was designed to be hijacked by the NSA and GCHQ.

Why don't they set up random DUI pre-flight checkpoints of pilots nationwide? What about tired pilots that fall asleep in the cockpit? Ordinarily the only negative commentary I run into is that put together by Dublin Mick, who... ostensibly... ostensibly went out of his way to assault me because he felt that I did not attack The Vatican aggressively enough. He didn't feel it was important enough to approach me first before he launched into his hatchet job, which included seeking out everyone he knew who disliked me for one reason or another and letting them have at me while he performed as modifier, which made him not only look good but also accomplished his real intention. It was a good example of Machiavelli being channeled to a particular end but... I digress.

US Torture Program: A Terrifying Reality That Cannot Go Unpunished

According to human rights organizations, civil liberty groups, and international lawyers, disclosure of the records is critical for US government accountability. The concealed photographs were taken by US military service members and collected during investigations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some could be on par with, or worse than, those released from Abu Ghraib prison.

The White House has fought to keep these photographs suppressed, and even collaborated with Congress to change law to enable the concealment. They claim the release of records relating to torture and extrajudicial killings of prisoners since 2003 would endanger Americans. It is indeed yet another illegitimate attempt to give Washington sweeping power to suppress evidence of its own misconduct and act above international law.

Facebook Reveals its Master Plan – Control All News Flow

In recent months, Facebook has been quietly holding talks with at least half a dozen media companies about hosting their content inside Facebook rather than making users tap a link to go to an external site.

The new proposal by Facebook carries another risk for publishers: the loss of valuable consumer data. When readers click on an article, an array of tracking tools allow the host site to collect valuable information on who they are, how often they visit and what else they have done on the web.

And if Facebook pushes beyond the experimental stage and makes content hosted on the site commonplace, those who do not participate in the program could lose substantial traffic — a factor that has played into the thinking of some publishers. Their articles might load more slowly than their competitors’, and over time readers might avoid those sites.

Dem senators warn Obamacare rule 'particularly harmful and disruptive'

Six Democratic senators and one independent have asked the Department of Health and Human Services to a delay a new rule that would likely force small businesses to pay more for employee health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare. The senators warn that if the administration goes ahead with the change it would be "particularly harmful and disruptive" to small businesses.

Starting in 2016, the Obamacare change will require businesses that employ between 51-100 people to purchase insurance in what the government defines as the "small group market," rather than the market for large group plans. The senators warn that the change will inflate health care costs for those businesses.

Libya has turned into a complete and total disaster zone/terrorist training camp ever since America and its allies decided to liberate it. While certainly not perfect under Qaddafi, it was an infinitely better place before NATO intervention than after. Not only that, but the entire justification for the “freedom” delivered to it by Western powers was, naturally, based on lies and propaganda. I covered this last month in the post, The Forgotten War – Understanding the Incredible Debacle Left Behind by NATO in Libya.

Fall in gas prices drags behind crude oil plunge

Prices at the gas pump have fallen alongside crude oil but the savings don’t appear to be as high as consumers might have expected.

Since hitting a low in mid-January of 87 cents a litre, gasoline has drifted back up above $1. In Toronto on Tuesday, the average price at the pump was $1.03, according to the online price tracker gasbuddy.com.

And they’re likely headed higher, say investors and industry watchers.

Detroit sergeant seen on video planting evidence

A recycler sued the city and Detroit Police in federal court Monday, alleging he is being targeted in a scrap-metal crackdown after a sergeant was caught on surveillance camera planting evidence.

Dearborn resident Joseph Fawaz, whose family owns Southwest Metals, accused a sergeant on the city's Copper Theft Task Force of waging a years-long personal vendetta, bribing a witness and arresting employees. The task force member, Sgt. Rebecca McKay, allegedly was caught on the scrap metal shop's surveillance camera planting evidence during a raid, according to the lawsuit.

The federal court lawsuit illustrates complications in the post-bankrupt city's attempt to clamp down on copper and metal thefts that trigger blight and fuel a black-market criminal racket.

Amazon Quietly Bricked Jailbroken Kindle Devices Last Year

It appears that Amazon is very serious about walling off its garden. Late last year, it pushed out a firmware update for its Amazon Fire TV devices that not only made rooted devices unusable, but prevented Fire TV owners from rolling back firmware to previous, more root-friendly versions. Apparently, Kindle users were also included in this lockdown.

A recent post at Good Reader notes that the latest firmware for Kindles is pretty much identical to its Fire TV firmware, right down to the destruction of functionality.

The new firmware was pushed out to all modern Kindle devices in late November of last year. Anything after version 5.60 will not allow you to hack the firmware and do interesting things like change the screensaver system or install custom apps.

Dissolving Illusions About the Measles Vaccine

With the elevation of vaccination to a sacred cow status, it is no wonder that ever since about 50 visitors to Disneyland in California were diagnosed with measles earlier this year, the whole country has been subjected to a relentless barrage of mainstream media articles blaming unvaccinated children for a minor measles outbreak that, by March 16, 2015, consisted of a grand total of 176 cases.2 in a population of 320 million people.

The way public health officials and the media have been promoting irrational fear about measles and using it to lobby for laws eliminating all non-medical vaccine exemptions or even criminally prosecuting and jailing unvaccinated people, it sometimes feels like we are living in a dystopian science fiction novel.

I have never seen such a well-coordinated disinformation campaign to vilify virtually anyone who would question the effectiveness and safety of complying with the CDC's ever-expanding vaccination schedule.3

AMTRAK / DHS ARE SPYING ON PASSENGERS AND LETTING POLICE ACCESS RECORDS WITHOUT WARRANTS

The first release of documents from 'Papers Please.org's' FOIA request for records of police and govt access to Amtrak reservation data show that Amtrak is giving police root access and a dedicated user interface to mine passenger data for general state and law enforcement purposes and is lying to passengers about it. Papers Please. Org's FOIA request was prompted by Amtrak’s obviously incomplete response to an earlier FOIA request from the ACLU. That response omitted any mention of Homeland Security's (DHS) access to Amtrak reservation data. Even though we’ve seen records of Amtrak profiling passengers and denying DHS involvement. The documents were clearly responsive to the ACLU’s request, and should have been included in Amtrak’s response to that request.

Former diplomat, minister shocked by WTO spy claims

Spying by the GCSB on those competing against National Government minister Tim Groser for the World Trade Organisation's top job has appalled a former foreign affairs and trade minister and astonished one of the country's most experienced diplomats.

An inquiry is likely into the actions of the GCSB after Labour leader Andrew Little said he would ask the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security to investigate today.

The Herald and US news site the Intercept yesterday revealed a top secret GCSB document showing the electronic surveillance agency had been searching for email communications which mentioned Mr Groser, the Trade Minister, in association with names of candidates competing against him. The news broke as Prime Minister John Key and Mr Groser prepared to sign a Free Trade Agreement in South Korea, whose former trade minister was among the surveillance targets vying for the $700,000 WTO job.

GCSB spies monitored diplomats in line for World Trade Organisation job

Our spies monitored email and internet traffic about international diplomats vying for the job of director-general of the World Trade Organisation - a job for which National Government Trade Minister Tim Groser was competing.

The spying operation was active in 2013 and called the "WTO Project" by New Zealand's Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB), according to a top secret document obtained by the Herald and United States news site The Intercept.

The operation involved covert surveillance of candidates from Brazil, Costa Rica, Ghana, Jordan, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico and South Korea.

Read the WTO document here

The GCSB tasking document which structured the search of internet traffic was designed to look for references to Mr Groser, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) role and his competitors, initially in any online communication but then narrowed to emails.

Fighting The "War on Terror" By Banning Cash

It was just a matter of time before Western governments used the trumped up "War on Terror" as an excuse to drastically ratchet up the very real war on the use of cash and personal privacy that they are waging against their own citizens.

Taking advantage of public anxiety in the wake of the attacks on Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket, France has taken the first step. It seems the terrorists involved partially financed these attacks by cash, as well as by consumer loans and the sale of counterfeit goods. What a shockeroo!

The terrorists used CASH to purchase some of the stuff they needed--no doubt these murderers were also shod and clothed and used cell phones, cars, and public sidewalks during the planning and execution of their mayhem. Why not restrict their use? A naked , barefoot terrorist without communications is surely less effective than a fully clothed and equipped one.

Netanyahu election aftermath: Reaping the consequences of Israeli fanaticism

Mearsheimer and Walt try to see Israel as a normal state capable of making rational decisions, but the extremists are in charge and have been so at least since the 1967 War. Any attempt to make a meaningful withdrawal from the West Bank and Jerusalem and to allow a viable Palestinian state would produce a civil war among Israelis and likely provoke a strong response by the lobby on the side of the nonaccommodationists. The fate of the Oslo peace process, the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and the support by the lobby of the most radical elements within Israel certainly argue that there is little chance of a successful move in this direction.

“By Hook or By Crook”: Determined Obama Vows to Go Beyond Executive Actions to Rule- Marc Slavo

In an interview with Huffington Post, Obama vowed to use “administrative” powers or the apparent power to “convene the private sector” to get his business done “by hook or by crook” (sounds like picking winners and losers a la Solyndra all over again):

“What we have done though is consistently looked for additional opportunities to get stuff done. Wherever we see a possibility of increasing wages, creating more jobs, making sure that more people are able to access opportunity, we’re gonna seize it. And we’re going to, wherever possible, try to reach out to Republicans and see if they can work with us. And where they’re not willing to work with us, we will do it administratively or we will convene the private sector.

PROTEST MTV’S DECISION TO MAKE CHANGE TO HUNGARY’S EUROVISION ENTRY

Israel is protesting Hungary’s Eurovision entry, which includes condemnation against Operation Protective Edge and mentions the number of Palestinian children killed during the 2014 Israeli military campaign.

Israeli Ambassador Ilan Mor turned to the Hungarian broadcasting authority, expressed his country’s reservations over the planned song and asked that the problematic segment be removed.

The Eurovision Song Contest will be held in May in Vienna, Austria. Hungary’s song this year, “Wars for Nothing,” will be performed by a group of three singers led by Hungarian singer-songwriter Boggie. The song has an anti-war message, focusing on the victims of violence and wars in the world. One of the captions in the song’s video refers to Operation Protective Edge, stating: “2014 – Gaza – two-thirds of the victims were civilians, including more than 500 children.”

IT DIDN'T WORK IN AFGHANISTAN, SO LET'S DO IT IN MEXICO

In Mexico, the U.S. military is directly involved in the War on Drugs. In this country, that "war" has provided the pretext for the militarization of local police forces and increased routine surveillance of ordinary people going about their ordinary lives.

And just as both the national security state and the right wing have used the specter of IS to create an atmosphere of panic and hysteria in this country, so both have used the drug cartels' grotesque theater of violence to justify their demonization of immigrants from Latin America and the massive militarization of America’s borderlands.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One of the most classic definitions of insanity is doing the same thing, precisely the same way, over and over again, yet expecting a different outcome.

This alleged "war on drugs" is so bogus, illegitimate, and ineffective I almost do not know where to start.

But I do know one thing; when the country of Portugal decriminalized the possession of small amounts of drugs for personal use, didn't jail people for it, and pushed counseling for drug habits, the drug use numbers dropped dramatically, particularly among teens and younger adults.

Decriminalizing the use of drugs, and having them ultimately prescribed by a doctor, would take the profit out of the cartel's reach so quickly, it would make their heads spin.

Of course, THAT...would be logical.

Communication Security Establishment's cyberwarfare toolbox revealed

Top-secret documents obtained by the CBC show Canada's electronic spy agency has developed a vast arsenal of cyberwarfare tools alongside its U.S. and British counterparts to hack into computers and phones in many parts of the world, including in friendly trade countries like Mexico and hotspots like the Middle East.

The little known Communications Security Establishment wanted to become more aggressive by 2015, the documents also said.

Revelations about the agency's prowess should serve as a "major wakeup call for all Canadians," particularly in the context of the current parliamentary debate over whether to give intelligence officials the power to disrupt national security threats, says Ronald Deibert, director of the Citizen Lab, the respected internet research group at University of Toronto's Munk School of Global Affairs.

That Moron Who Spews Garbage and Doesn’t Listen to Reason May Be a Bot

Leck’s bot, @AI_AGW, doesn’t just respond to arguments directed at Leck himself, it goes out and picks fights. George Osborne’s Budget will threaten workers' retirement funds with 55% stealth tax

Analysts say proposals in Chancellor George Osborne’s Budget will hit not just the rich, but also those on more modest incomes.

Mr Osborne claimed a move to lower the “lifetime allowance” – the maximum that can be saved into a pension pot before a 55 per cent penal tax kicks in – from £1.25million to £1million, would affect “fewer than four per cent” of people. But experts argue that the allowance has now almost halved from £1.8million since 2010 and the tax will hit older savers who have built up their pension pots over many years.

Greg Kingston, of Suffolk Life, part of Legal & General, said: “Even a 21-year-old on the forthcoming higher minimum wage of £6.70 per hour who works a 35-hour week and puts 20 per cent of their earnings into a pension, by the time they are 67, could easily have reached this limit.”

Washington just dipped into retirement savings to fund itself

You know things are getting bad when your government begins to stick its hand into retirement accounts just so that it can remain solvent for a few more months.

With the debt limit about to come back into full swing at a staggering $18.1 trillion this week, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew has undertaken drastic measures to kick the can down the road until later this year.

One such plan to fund the government includes raiding the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), a 401(k)-style retirement savings plan set up for federal employees.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US Government has now emptied the Social Security trust fund and is starting to loot the retirement accounts of their own employees! I remember back in the 1990s when I first called attention to what was going on there was this one poster from a .gov domain who kept attacking me and insisting that the government had the right to spend social security funds as general revenues. Now that it is his own retirement being embezzled, I wonder if he has changed his mind! :)

The Federal Reserve Bank Must Be Destroyed

During the years of the Roman Republic, Cato the Elder ended every speech with the phrase “Delanda est Carthago” (Carthage must be destroyed). Rome had fought two wars with Carthage, yet the threat to the Republic remained. Cato saw Carthage as an existential threat and concluded that Rome would not be secure as long as Carthage existed. So fervently did he hold this view that he ended every speech, even about completely different subjects, with the famous phrase. I believe that we Austrians need to adopt a similar phrase to remind the American people that the US faces an existential threat from the machinations of the Federal Reserve Bank. “Delanda est in Susidium Foederatum Bank”…The Federal Reserve Bank must be destroyed. Like Carthage, the Federal Reserve Bank cannot be controlled or restrained. Either it or our republic will survive, but not both. For the sake of our nation, the Fed must be destroyed.

A man whose bid to become a police officer was rejected after he scored too high on an intelligence test has lost an appeal in his federal lawsuit against the city.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York upheld a lower court’s decision that the city did not discriminate against Robert Jordan because the same standards were applied to everyone who took the test.

Je Suis Zeon: French Freedom of Speech is a Myth, Says Cartoonist

Journalists and cartoonists defended their right for freedom of speech. But it seems like something is rotten in France.

A Frenchman called Zeon, 31, originally from Paris told Sputnik France his striking story. Recently he was arrested by the French government for his caricatures.

“On Tuesday March 3, 2015, police broke into my house at 7 a.m. The officers were following orders of a judge and led me to the court and then put me under arrest. I was arrested for a caricature which I drew in 2011 and which was opposed by the organization BNVCA (National Bureau of Monitoring of Anti-Semitism). The organization filed a complaint on me in 2011. Currently, the investigation continues.”

He used to draw comics, and since 2007 engaged in caricatures and gained fame as a caricaturist. Currently he leads a group of illustrators and caricaturists who have been boycotted by the media.

Webmaster's Commentary:

[Video] Goldman Sachs: The bank that rules the world

Ever since the stock market crashed, on the night of September 15, 2008, the name Goldman Sachs, or GS, has been appearing everywhere: in the collapse of the financial system, the Greek crisis, the plunge of the euro, and the campaign to prevent regulation of financial markets.

The investment bank created in New York in 1868 has carved out its reputation and success by working silently behind the scenes.

But today GS stands accused of myriad charges: playing a key role in the subprime loan fiasco, pushing several of its competitors into bankruptcy, helping countries like Greece hide their deficits before speculating on their downfall, precipitating the fall of the euro, and influencing the consumer price index. And yet GS has come out of this latest crisis richer and more powerful than ever.

It appears that a wide sweeping awakening is about to, very soon become highly visible. It's been around for awhile and it has been coming for awhile. It's sort of like Spring. It may come later than we might like or earlier than we expect but come it will. The Spring of a raised consciousness it going to come about the same way The Huns visited Rome, or The Moors swept across so much of the eastern world; changing the arts, science, architecture and human thought of the time and leaving a lasting impact right up to this day. In the modern day, Shit has been happening from the top down for some time. Now it's going to start happening from the bottom up and being amplified by the force of the planets and whatever mysterious power guides their movements.

“The public should take notice,” Sethi, of the ACLU, told Motherboard. “These programs may be coming to a theater near you.” The ?facial recognition pilot program launched last week by US Customs and Border Protection, which civil liberties advocates say could lead to new potentially privacy-invading programs, is just the first of three biometric experiments that the feds are getting ready to launch.

Dick Cheney’s endless lies

Dick Cheney’s endless lies: Why his Playboy interview may be his most shameless yet

The most obvious sign that Cheney is either lying to Rosen or himself — or, most likely, both — is the simple fact that he’s doing the interview in the first place. Indeed, after spending most of his eight years in the White House endeavoring to shield his deeds and words from scrutiny, it seems lately that the once-taciturn vice president cannot shut up.

Kerry insists world powers united in Iran talks

LAUSANNE: US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Saturday that world powers were “united” in their nuclear talks with Iran, amid speculation of splits with France, and stressed that he would not rush into a bad deal.

“I emphasise: We are united in our goal, our approach, our resolve and our determination to ensure that Iran’s programme is entirely peaceful,” Kerry said in Switzerland before leaving for London for talks with his British, French and German counterparts.

The complex deal on the table, due to be finalised by July, is aimed at convincing the world that Iran will not build nuclear weapons under the guise of its ongoing civilian programme.

UK university faces row over anti-Israel summit

A quarrel has erupted over a British university holding a summit questioning whether Israel has a legal right to exist under international law, with some saying the conference will be a platform for anti-Semitic views, UK-based newspaper The Sunday Times reported.

The three-day summit, to be held by Southampton University, will bring together figures such as Richard Falk, a Princeton professor and former U.N. special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, and Ghada Karmi, an Exeter University research fellow who claims that she and her family were “forced” to leave their home as a result of Israel’s creation in 1948.

Israel lobby's attack on academic freedom

For years, Israel lobby groups have slammed the Palestinians' call for a boycott of Israeli universities as an attack on "academic freedom". Now the mask has well and truly slipped.

Next month, the University of Southampton in the UK will hold a conference on Israel and international law to bring together "scholars from law, politics, philosophy, theology, anthropology, cultural studies history and other connected disciplines".

However, in an unashamed attack on free speech, the university has come under increasing pressure to cancel the gathering.

Late last year, the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the Jewish Leadership Council, and the Union of Jewish Students wrote to the head of Southampton's Law School, claiming that the conference would surpass the acceptable".

Jeb Bush’s Team Plots Vast Effort to Win Florida

The plan, code-named “Homeland Security,” seeks to try to neutralize two potentially grave but homegrown threats to Mr. Bush’s long-anticipated run for president: the likely challenge from a charismatic young Republican senator from Miami, Marco Rubio, who is expected to seek the Republican nomination himself, and a demographic drift within Florida that could doom Mr. Bush there in a fall campaign against a Democrat.

The Bush effort in Florida, where Barack Obama prevailed in the last two elections, will pour enormous resources and energy over the next year into a state that many thought Mr. Bush, its governor from 1999 to 2007, would be able to count on as a bedrock of support.

Man imprisoned for three months over possession of common vitamin powder

A Minnesota man whom authorities kept in jail for three months has finally been released and cleared of charges that he possessed an illegal substance, amphetamine.

Joseph Ray Burrell, 31, of Mankato -- which is located about 90 minutes southeast of Minneapolis -- was originally arrested for possessing a powder that police believed was amphetamine but was actually a powdered form of vitamins, like he told them when they took him into custody.

Now, despite his release, Burrell is unhappy that it took the state's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension lab so long to confirm what the powder actually was -- and that he was forced to remain in jail as though he were guilty of something without ever going to trial.

Rich Man’s Bank Hit by Bank Run, Collapse, “Bail-In”

In Europe nary a day seems to go by without some mention or rumor of a bank run or bank closure. Ground Zero of the current troubles is Greece, whose broken financial system is now wholly dependent on regular infusions of euros from the ECB. The moment those infusions stop – something the ECB has warned could happen at any time – the country’s banking system collapses. On Wednesday Greek banks saw deposit outflows of €300 million, the highest in a single day since a February deal with the euro zone that staved off a banking collapse.

A+ 3-minute rap video: Schools fail to educate on Life’s most vital issues

*hyperlinks/video live at source*

Hat tip: Zen Gardner

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xe6nLVXEC0

Boy in a band’s 3-minute Don’t stay in school rap video powerfully communicates usual frustrations about high school-level education:

Students learn structure of government, including rights and leaders’ rosy rhetoric, but never compare current events to discover to what extent those rights exist, and to what extent leaders’ rhetoric match the reality of actual events.
Students aren’t trained about how money is created, mortgages, and having a job.
Students don’t know promised universal human rights (and here, here, here).
Students learn abstract math that 99%+ of adults never use (algebra, trigonometry, calculus) masked as “real-world” situations, when real-world problems exist that kill thousands and millions (and have solutions).
The conclusion is that topics that don’t apply to actual practical living, “don’t stay in school.”

We in alternate media agree.

A Family Business of Perpetual War

Neoconservative pundit Robert Kagan and his wife, Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, run a remarkable family business: she has sparked a hot war in Ukraine and helped launch Cold War II with Russia – and he steps in to demand that Congress jack up military spending so America can meet these new security threats. This extraordinary husband-and-wife duo makes quite a one-two punch for the Military-Industrial Complex, an inside-outside team that creates the need for more military spending, applies political pressure to ensure higher appropriations, and watches as thankful weapons manufacturers lavish grants on like-minded hawkish Washington think tanks.

David Cameron and Ed Miliband need to forget spin and give public the truth

All the personal insults politicians lob at each other, all the spin and jibes, might be a jolly good jape at Prime Minister’s Questions, but tearing clumps out of each other isn’t a strategy to fight an election. Nor to get the voters on side.

Ted Cruz Fuels 2016 Chatter With Hyped Speech

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is fueling chatter about his 2016 plans with a speech planned Monday at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.

One aide to the likely Republican presidential candidate told The Daily Caller “you’ll want to be there” for the speech but didn’t reveal what Cruz plans to say while appearing at the Christian university founded by the late Jerry Falwell.

Should he enter the race, Cruz is expected to offer himself as a conservative alternative candidate to GOP establishment favorites like Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Federal judges declare cops can arbitrarily arrest hundreds of people; citizens have no freedom of assembly

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has reversed an earlier decision that allowed participants in the so-called "Occupy Wall Street" movement to sue New York City police following a mass arrest on the Brooklyn Bridge four years ago.

As reported by Courthouse News, a three-judge panel ruled 2-1 to dismiss the lawsuit without so much as even a hearing on the case.
