Thank you, Mr. Chairman, and I want to welcome to this Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing my fellow United States senator and now nominee for secretary of state.
I have six questions based on your and President-elect Obama's statements. The dates as well as the tape recording of these are attached to the copies of my questions, which my press secretary has just provided to yours.
1. In July of 2007, when Sen. Obama said during a debate: "I would meet the leaders of rogue nations without preconditions," you said, on the following day: "I thought that was irresponsible, and, frankly, naive.
Q: Presumingly, you were telling the truth then, so how could you effectively now serve such an "irresponsible and naive" president? Or, do you presume he has decisively grown in stature since then?
2. In May of 2008, you said:
"Senator McCain will bring a lifetime of experience to the campaign. I will bring a lifetime of experience, and Senator Obama will bring a speech that he gave in 2002."
