"THE WAR ON DRUGS"
Just for your consideration. The so-called "WAR ON DRUGS" is lost. That’s not an opinion, it’s a fact. I believe it was George Santayana who once said that, "Those who fail to understand the past, are doomed to repeat it". This country tried to legislate morality with prohibition, which of course failed miserably. The result of this catastrophic failure gave rise to organized crime in the US, or at the very least, provided the social canvas upon which organized crime would flourish. When prohibition was repealed, different “products” were simply dropped into these underground distribution networks resulting in stellar profits, the likes of which, had never been seen.
The governments’ response was characteristically inappropriate and as the “heat” came down on organized crime, street prices went up, and so did profits. The government then responded with more laws, prisons, judges and law enforcement and once again, street prices went up and so did profits. The US government fueled and fanned the flames of the “drug problem” by treating it as a crime instead of a social issue.
At this point, if drugs were made “legal” the resulting loss in terms of jobs in the US would wreak economic havoc and cause a deep(er)depression. Fully one third of the US Military is involved in the drug war to some extent, the entire DEA bureaucracy, one third of the FBI, nearly the entire US Customs bureaucracy, with the exception of a mere token number of agents devoted to tracking, arresting and prosecuting child pornographers. Border Patrol has a dual mission, alien and drug interdiction. The infamous IRS, ATF and US Marshals Office, along with every every single Intelligence agency in the US, all have significant roles in the drug war. How about the State and Federal prison systems? How many of those incarcerated are for drug crimes alone and how many guards, social workers, parole and probation officers make their house and car payments with state and federal money because of the “WAR ON DRUGS” What about lawyers and judges? You know, those guys that influence our lives by passing and upholding laws and taking campaign contributions from the big Pharmaceutical corporations. Is anyone so naïve as to believe that lawyers, judges, cops, etc... want drugs to be made legal? They would then be restricted to ambulance chasing or perhaps be forced to go to medical school and get a productive job.
Obviously there is an overwhelming tide of illegal drugs coming into the US despite the well documented and funded interdiction efforts. It should therefore be no surprise to anyone that the US Government itself is involved in bringing drugs into the US while at the same time funding efforts to stop the flow. Don't believe me? Google Freeway Ricky Ross.
BTW, Afghanistan is now producing more raw opium than ever before.

Hemp
mathprofIronically, hemp was probably the single most useful plant know to man. It was used as a pharmaceutical for hundreds of conditions, and had so been used for thousands of years, in many disperate cultures. It was used for rope, cloth, and paper too.
Recent studies have shown that hemp's psychoactive components (the same ones that get one high) have surprisingly strong anti-cancer properties, against a variety of different types of cancer. These anti-cancer properties seem to counteract any carcinogens in the smoke (vaporization avoids the smoke altogether, so one only gets the therapeutic effects of the herb, without the pyrolitic carcinogens). Check out the very interesting Canadian documentary, "Running from the Cure".
Other recent studies have shown that those wonderful psychoactive components of hemp also postpone the onset of and delay the progression of Alzheimers better than any existing medication. Wow!
And of course there are the many therapeutic antispasmotic uses of the herb for MS victims, etc.
And the easing of nausia, and the relieving of pain that opiates can't relieve, etc, etc, etc...
And hemp is non-toxic. You can't OD. Impossible. Nobody has ever died from an "overdose". One can't say that about most over the counter medications.
Indeed, rather than causing brain damage, like alcohol and tobacco, those magical psychoactive components are powerful anti-oxidants (more so than vitamine E), and help protect brain cells from harmful free radicals. And they also stimulate nerve cell growth in the hippocampus (which may actually IMPROVE memory!).
Rather than being addicting (like alcohol, tobacco, and coffee), hemp can be used to help addicts overcome their addictions. Along the same lines, hemp can also help those suffering from various compulsive disorders (which are another kind of addiction).
How ironic, for tobacco and caffein junkies to bust people for using what is not only harmless, but in MANY ways actually healthy.
How ironic, and how sad. All so such a very few can rake in the (not very few) billions of $ ...
PDFA
HAL9000Drug war partners.
Corporations and politicians collude to transfer taxpayer money to corporations. When corporations seek to sanitize their image by portraying themselves as "good corporate citizens," they often choose to become "drug war partners."
Some of the world's biggest corporate criminals are major contributors to drug war propagandists like Partnership for a Drug Free America (PDFA). Founded in 1986 by the American Association of Advertising Agencies, PDFA (until recently) received massive cash donations from the alcohol and tobacco industries.
PDFA received tons of money from American Brands (Jim Beam whisky), Philip Morris (Marlboro and Virginia Slims cigarettes, Miller beer), Anheuser Busch (Budweiser, Michelob, Busch beer), and RJ Reynolds (Salem, Winston cigarettes). The contributions from the tobacco industry are mandated by law as part of the settlement between the states and the tobacco industry.
Bad publicity forced PDFA to reluctantly stop accepting such donations, but PDFA still receives hundreds of thousands of dollars from other major corporations, including Glaxo, Bayer, Coca Cola, Hoffman La Roche, and GE.
The organization receives money from ketchup-laden Heinz Corporation foundations supervised by Teresa Heinz Kerry, who inherited $550 million from her late husband, US Senator John Heinz, and is now the very wealthy wife of Democrat John Kerry.
PDFA estimates it has received at least $4.5 billion in pro bono support since 1987. Ironically, a significant portion of the "drug-free" Partnership's corporate cash comes from drug companies, companies that sell drugs for drug companies, and drug industry trade-lobbying groups.
These include the National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation, Consumer Healthcare Products Association, Purdue Pharma L.P., The Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation, Inc., The Procter & Gamble Fund, Bayer Corporation, GlaxoSmithKline, Kimberly-Clark, Pfizer Inc., Wyeth Consumer Healthcare Division, Endo Pharmaceuticals, Hoffmann-La Roche Inc., Merck & Co. and Walgreens.
What's in it for the donors? PDFA says that corporate cashgivers become "strategic partners" who benefit commercially by working to spread PDFA's message.
PDFA says these benefits enable a corporation to:
"Leverage the reach, expertise and talent of the Partnership by sponsoring educational programs that use TV and radio advertising, print and the Web to reach parents and teens with memorable messages on the dangers of drugs and the benefits of living drug-free. Your organization can establish a highly visible cause MARKETING relationship with the Partnership that engages target audiences through EMOTIONALLY RELEVANT programs supported by creative advertising. Collaborating with the Partnership on proprietary marketing programs can help you attain your [sales] goals while increasing communication and education about drug use. Local event sponsorship can reinforce your organization's visibility and commitment to helping at the grassroots level. Direct interaction in community settings – including town hall meetings where concerned citizens develop local responses to the drug issue – can help create an EMOTIONAL BOND with CONSUMERS that resonates far beyond the chosen venue.
