A force of about 700 U.S. and Afghan troops launched a major assault along Afghanistan's border with Pakistan in an attempt to destroy a growing insurgent haven and blunt rising violence in the area, senior Army officials said Monday.
The assault represents one of the largest in eastern Afghanistan in the past several years and reflects growing concern among U.S. commanders and Afghan leaders that Taliban insurgents are seeking to intensify pressure in the east as troops prepare for a tough summer of fighting in the south.
And, as has continued to happen throughout the almost 9 years of this brutally immoral and illegal war, the more innocent civilians we kill, the more we literally shove those left standing into the waiting arms of the Taliban.
When those elements of rampant governmental corruption, lack of infrastructure, no chance for a decent education or job come together to create a witch's brew of despair, that is what makes insurgency look attractive to some, because they think they have no other option.
The US has a long track record of backing various thugs internationally, because they are looked upon as "our thugs" who can and will protect US business interests, even at the expense of the welfare of their own people.
And almost every time, the US gets caught completely off guard when the people in those countries governed by such a thug, decide they have had enough, and revolt against the US-backed thugocracy in power.
US and NATO leadership, in their Afghanistan "strategy" (if one can even call it that) appear to be doing the same thing over and over again, yet expecting a different outcome.
