UN: 1000 Afghan civilians killed in 2009

A latest UN report shows that the number of Afghan civilians killed either in US-led airstrikes or Taliban attacks has risen beyond the 1000 in first half of 2009.

UN assistance mission in Afghanistan said Friday air strikes by the US-led forces were responsible for a higher number of civilian causalities in the war-torn country.

The mission warned that more civilians would likely be killed as militants try to battle a troop increase by the administration of President Barack Obama.

The UN also noticed that the number of civilians killed in conflict in Afghanistan has jumped 24 percent so far this year.
