R.I.P Usenet: 1980-2008
Dropping all of Usenet to lose alt.binaries.videos.of.criminal.acts is definitely throwing the baby out with the bathwater, but at the same time I don't have much pity for the binaries crowd. Usenet is a hideously inefficient way to distribute binary file—you end up making thousands of unused copies on various servers and encoding your files in inefficient ways. And way too much of the binaries traffic consists of piracy and warez.

chillyphantomA country that was once the envy of the world has become ... well ... quite a sad mess. The people have lost control of their government. They have lost their freedom and their rights. But, at least Muslims will stop hating them now and all wars against Muslims should therefore cease.

koochI loved Usenet back in the 90s. I agree with the position that it started to die when AOL users began flocking to it. My old pro audio group used to be inhabited by big names from the business until the newbies came streaming in and would accuse folks like George Massenburg and Steve Albini of being fakers. No--that was really them, and for a while I could ask them questions......
