Olmert to visit Russia to foil arms sale to Syria

The Israeli premier Ehud Olmert intends to visit Russia to foil a possible arms deal to Syria, according to Yediot Ahronot on Friday.

The paper said that Olmert threatened Syria that Israel will destroy any weapons they buy from Russia telling the Syrians that it would be a loss for Syria to pay money for arms that Israel will work to destroy.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It will be interesting to see just how far Olmert will get with his belligerence if elements of the Russian Fleet ultimately makes one of their ports the Syrian port of Tartus, "...which would give the Russian Navy its first foothold in the Mediterranean for two decades.", as reported by Times on Line, 21 August 2008.
