With Obama approaching the end of his sixth month in the White House, there is growing evidence that his administration is in only the first stages of what is shaping up to be a major and sustained escalation of the US war in Afghanistan.
Elected in large part because of the hostility of American working people to the militarist policies of the Bush administration, Obama and the Pentagon are waging an intensified and brutal counter-insurgency campaign that has the potential of dwarfing the carnage in Iraq and dragging on for another decade.
The muscularity of Obama's foreign policy (even with mercenaries, which comprise a sizable complement of military forces) cannot be sustained by the continuation of an all-volunteer military.
There will be a point where he will have to re-institute the draft.

"Since the inception of the High School Registrar Program in 1981, thousands of volunteers have been appointed as Selective Service High School Registrars. They provide an important civic service, ensuring that students are in compliance with the Military Selective Service Act which requires young men to register within 30 days of their 18th birthday. They provide a convenient alternative to registering at the post office, and they can assist men in registering on-line using school computers to connect to http://www.sss.gov. Anyone wishing to serve as a high school registrar can complete the online application."
Remember: all US young men between the ages of 18 through 25 must still register for the Selective Service, under US law, with draconian penalties and consequences if they don't.
We barely have enough military to fulfill their tasks around the world right now.
If there are not a massive number of new recruits for the all volunteer army, where will the rest of the person-power come from for further military deployments?
