China takes over from West as Iran's main economic partner

China has emerged as Iran's top economic partner, investing heavily in the energy sector and filling the gaps left by Western firms forced out by international sanctions.

In 2009, China became Iran's premier trade partner, with bilateral trade worth 21.2 billion dollars against 14.4 billion dollars three years earlier.

Webmaster's Commentary:

UN sanctions against Iran, particularly with this spectacular increase in trade between China and Iran?

In the immortal word(s) of Tony Soprano,

"Fuggetaboutit!"

There is one aspect of this relationship to which the US, Israel, NATO, the EU, etc., need to pay close attention.

If there is some kind of attack on Iran, will China (and Russia, for that matter) feel sufficiently threatened, particularly in regard to energy development in Iran, that they would join the fray on the side of Iran?!?
