Presuming that "creative destruction" is a valid concept (which remains debatable) why would only the banks be exempt from it?

Banks are temples of the religion of interest lending. When a religion doesn't relieve one's hardships, it's eventually exposed as a scam, and its temples might get leveled. All we are witnessing in Greece is the "you can't fool all the people all the time" maxim at work.

When you're watching your children faint from starvation, when your country is devoid of basics like Aspirin, a little smashed glass is the least of the country's problems.

Destruction of the banks is symbolic - the banks caused this crisis, and made the taxpayers suffer.

The "Icelandic" solution is the *only* solution to this. Jail the bankers and walk away from the debts and start again.
