Art scam warning

POLICE are warning members of the public about an international art scam after a man was arrested yesterday on the Central Coast.

A report was made to Brisbane Water Local Area Command (LAC) detectives from a Central Coast resident about a man who attended his home, allegedly introducing himself as an Israeli University student selling artwork.

Brisbane Water LAC detectives made further inquiries and received information about a global fraud scam alleged to involve Israeli Nationals.

The information identified an established criminal enterprise dating prior to the year 2000 and operating worldwide in countries including Europe, USA and Australia.

Further information revealed that the organisation mass-produces artworks cheaply in China then sells them internationally at inflated prices.

The paintings are being promoted as original artworks by the seller. It is believed prices for the artwork in Australia range between $500 and $1,000.
