Staying power - the key to victory in the war over your rights

Lawrence Davidson considers two victories for human rights, one by Palestinian hunger strikers in Israel and the other by opponents of detention without trial in the USA. He argues that, although these are two battles won, the war to protect civil and human rights will need staying power and may last decades or even generations.

States back Montana in Citizens United campaign finance fight

Twenty-two US states ask supreme court to revisit controversial ruling that lifts restrictions on corporate money in politics.

Nearly half of US states have thrown their weight behind a legal defence of local laws restricting corporate money in politics by asking the supreme court to revisit its widely-criticised ban on similar national legislation.

The states filed a brief with the supreme court on Monday in support of a century-old law in Montana – the Corrupt Practices Act – against companies pumping money into elections.

Battleground Chicago Highlights War and Peace Hypocrisy

Stephen Lendman, Contributor
Activist Post

Chicago police have an odious reputation for brutality. It's well deserved. On Sunday, it showed up forcefully. The whole world watched.

Baton-wielding cops confronted protesters violently. Official policy is swing first, ask questions later, and blame victims for police thuggishness. More on that below.

On May 9, a National Writers Union (NWU) Chicago Chapter press release said:

"In 1968, the Democratic Party came to the City to nominate a president. What happened then became a part of Chicago's history: a massive public uprising of protest against an unjust war and a corrupt political system that created a massive local reaction within the City's police department. Violence and chaos resulted."

Forty-four years later things went from bad to worse. Imperial wars rage out of control. Obama, the peace candidate, itches for more. Belligerent nations never run out of targets or reasons to attack them.

US war veterans tossing medals back at Nato was a heroic act

Nato summit leaders should have been forced to watch the moving protest of the former troops chucking their medals away.

It was one of the most moving experiences many of us had witnessed in our lives. It is hard to describe in words. I couldn't get the lump out of my throat. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a woman next to me crying. Their words, their voices, crackling under the emotion of their courageous act, breaking under the weight of the pain, the trauma, their anger, sadness, and hope – theirs was a heroic and beautiful act, a moving ceremony. It was a privilege to be there with these women and men who served in our wars.

Operation Iraqi Freedom medal. Tossed. Global War on Terror medal. Thrown. National Defense medal. Pitched. Marine Corps Good Conduct medal. Flung. Navy and Marine Corps medal. Chucked.

They Live! ... with The Walking Dead inside your Head.

Chicago is famous for several things. One of them is for having the dirtiest political machine in the country; a country that includes Philadelphia and Houston. Is it any surprise that the Anti-Christ, Rahm (is not) Emmanuel is presently the mayor of that city? It is also known as having one of the most brutal police forces and thug response mechanisms in the country; a country that includes Philadelphia and Houston. Is it any surprise that Chicago is exhibiting the kind of behavior for which it is rightly famous? It is no surprise and there is no need for links. The news is all over and they are beating the press into submission as well. Of course, beating the press into submission may not be the worst of ideas; given whom they are already in submission to. For decades now, the press has been bent over a dining room table, with a red, gag reflex, rubber ball in it's mouth. Looks like it's got rubber at both ends but... then again, maybe not; given that homie does play that shit.

It is the first week of August, 1964, and U.S. warships under the command of U.S. Navy Admiral George Stephen Morrison have allegedly come under attack while patrolling Vietnam’s Tonkin Gulf. This event, subsequently dubbed the ‘Tonkin Gulf Incident,’ will result in the immediate passing by the U.S. Congress of the obviously pre-drafted Tonkin Gulf Resolution, which will, in turn, quickly lead to America’s deep immersion into the bloody Vietnam quagmire.

CNN Anchor on NATO protest to police: The whole world is watching, does anybody deserve this?

As noted here yesterday, earlier this year the United States plummeted in the World Press Freedom Index, due to numerous journalists being beaten, intimidated and/or arrested by officers – and the beat goes on.

In the 1980s, the military had its infamous $800 toilet seat. Today, it has a $17,000 drip pan.

Thanks to a powerful Kentucky congressman who has steered tens of millions of federal dollars to his district, the Army has bought about $6.5 million worth of the “leakproof” drip pans in the last three years to catch transmission fluid on Black Hawk helicopters. And it might want more from the Kentucky company that makes the pans, even though a similar pan from another company costs a small fraction of the price: about $2,500.

J Street’s Ben-Ami: ‘U.S. Congressmen live in fear of pro-Israeli intimidation’

The Ben-Ami – Kristol debate, coming on the heels of a similar debate held two weeks ago between controversial author Peter Beinart and the conservative Shalem Center’s Daniel Gordis at Columbia University, appears to signal an attempt by the Jewish community – at least in New York – to create an ongoing dialogue between its warring “factions” and to arrest the polarization of the community.

“I am happy to agree with Obama to a considerable degree,” said Kristol, one of America’s most well-known conservative commentators. He added that he does not expect Israel to be “that great an issue” in the upcoming November elections.

Nonetheless, Kristol elicited howls of protest from the audience when he predicted that the next U.S. secretary of state in a “Romney administration” would be former Democratic vice presidential nominee Senator Joe Lieberman. Ben-Ami wryly noted, “Israel already has a Lieberman as foreign minister.”

Their tactics include no-holds barred surveillance, vigilantism, and brutality. They are infamous for physical confrontation, flagrant abuse, and criminal assaults.

From 2002 - 2004 alone, over 10,000 complaints were lodged. Many involve violence, brutality, even torture and murder. Only 18 disciplinary actions followed...

US veterans return medals at NATO summit

CHICAGO -- Dozens of anti-war veterans tossed their medals onto a Chicago street Sunday near where NATO began its two-day summit, calling them “representations of hate,” “lies” and “cheap tokens,” and with some making emotional pleas for forgiveness from the people of Iraq and Afghanistan. “May they be able to forgive us for what we have done to them, may we begin to heal...” he said. They began hurtling their war service medals into the air -- a rare form of protest that was last done on a large scale by 900 Vietnam veterans in 1971. "We need to be feeding our children, not the war machines," said Kellie Stewart.

Iraq war veteran Steven Acheson will engage in the rarest of protests this weekend: He will hand back his military service medals at the NATO summit in Chicago, an act one veteran calls "disgraceful."

Acheson, who served for five years in the Army, including more than a year in Iraq that he says left him with PTSD and nightmares, is taking this step to protest the "war on terror" and the force leading it, NATO. He will be joined by a few dozen veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars who are concerned about the wars' fallout on veterans and civilians alike.

Day one of the NATO summit in Chicago has been marked by mass demonstrations that resulted in fierce clashes with police. RT's Anastasia Churkina was in the middle of what became the biggest rally in a week of anti-war protests. And co-director of the anti-war International Action Center Sara Flounders is also in Chicago, and says the action taken against the demonstrators shows NATO feels threatened by their cause.

Veterans symbolically discard service medals at anti-NATO rally

Nearly 50 U.S. military veterans at an anti-NATO rally in Chicago threw their service medals into the street on Sunday, an action they said symbolized their rejection of the U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Some of the veterans, many wearing military uniform shirts over black anti-war t-shirts, choked back tears as they explained their actions. Others folded an American flag while a bugle played "Taps," which is typically performed at U.S. military funerals.

"The medals are supposed to be for acts of heroism. I don't feel like a hero. I don't feel like I deserve them," said Zach LaPorte, who served in Iraq in 2005 and 2006.

The 5 Most Blatantly Corrupt Industries in the World . . . And What YOU Can Do About It

Noah Bonn, Contributor
Activist Post

Corruption is everywhere, but nowhere is it so blatant and so deep-seated as in the 5 following industries: Banking, Energy, Agriculture/Biotech, Media, and Healthcare.

Conspicuously missing from this list, of course, is politics.

The reason that politics was not included is because political corruption is very rarely confined to the political arena. It is almost entirely the result of financial lobby and backing, so I decided to focus on the industries behind the issue, rather than the politicians themselves.

Hopefully you will find this article eye-opening, as well as empowering in your effort to affect change today...

Chicago Police, wearing UN powder blue helmets and riot gear, treated brutally with the protesters who had come out to picket the NATO Summit. Footage coming out of the city showed these Nazis clubbing unarmed citizens, whom they had determined would be barred from the part of their city where the international elite had gathered to plan for another year of death and destruction throughout the world.

Greece is bankrupt; the eurozone is about to crack; JP Morgan makes billion-dollar "mistakes"; there's no (jobs) future for the new generations. And yet the weaponized arm of the Western 0.1% elites occupies Chicago - turned into an Orwellian police city-state - to discuss "smart defense".

In Afghanistan, the "smart" North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is in fact bound for a humiliating escape. "Smart defense"

is code for "there's no money". Only five among 28 NATO member states spend 2% of their gross domestic product on the military - as NATO would have it.

Property Tax Revolution in North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan; It's Our Home Not Theirs!

The North Dakota group, Empower the Taxpayer writes "On June 12, 2012, the voters of North Dakota will have the opportunity to make North Dakota truly 'Legendary', as the first to pass a state constitutional amendment that will abolish the property tax, prioritize spending by the legislature, and finally give local governments something they never had: true local control over spending."

Property taxes are an insidious form of taxation. They mean you never really own your home. Taxes even go up at the whim of local school boards and teachers unions who perpetually want more money, not for the kids, but for the school boards and teachers' unions.

Property taxes are particularly hard on senior citizens who can literally be taxed out of their own homes.

3 protesters charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism

The three men were among nine people that were collared Wednesday night in a raid on an apartment building in the 1000 block of West 32nd in the Bridgeport neighborhood, she said.

She said in a written statement released later Saturday that at 11:30 p.m., “police broke down doors with guns drawn and searched residences without a warrant or consent.”

Gelsomino said she still doesn’t know the details of the charges.

“Although some accusations of Molotov cocktails have been made by police, they have provided no evidence of criminal intent or wrongdoing on the part of the activists,” she said in the statement. “On Thursday, when asked about the raid at a press conference, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy knew so little about the alleged terrorism investigation that he said he would have to gather further information before commenting.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

The entire case for Molotov Cocktails rests on the possession of glass bottles by the men who were arrested, who, by the way, are home beer makers ... which sort of explains why they have the bottles, doesn't it? Home brewing is legal (unless you sell it) and you usually get a better quality beer that doesn't have all the legally required chemicals added to it. Home brewing/winemaking is a popular hobby ( I used to make my own mead many years ago, and the minister who married my wife and I brews his own beer as well). The police, who obviously chug the cheap stuff that comes in aluminum cans, arrested these guys for their hobby.

The Incompatibility of Nakba and Neutrality

There is no such thing as neutrality in a military-enforced occupation.

Each year, the western media continues to follow the Israeli narrative slavishly, pushing May 15 as Israel’s Independence Day, an act of “collective amnesia” that ignores the Palestinian commemoration of May 15 as Al-Nakba, the day Palestinians remember the forced expulsion or deaths in 1948, of almost 70% of the Palestinian population living then in what has become the state of Israel.

Meanwhile, Neve Gordon refuses to stand down. He continues to register his witness on the importance of the Nakba, fully aware of how long it took for the Nakba to penetrate the collective consciousness of the Israeli peace community.

NATO Occupies Sweet Home Chicago

Really funny piece by Pepe Escobar!

So the anthem now goes something like this: C'mon, baby don't you wanna go/back to that same old place/sweet home ring of steel Chicago.

Robert Johnson must be spitting fire in his bluesy grave because the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), for its 25th summit, is occupying Chicago like it was Kabul - with Americans treated as concentric circles of Taliban.

It sounds like a zany remake of John Landis's immortal The Blues Brothers. So what role would US President Barack Obama, the Drone Godfather, play?

One wonders what kind of "common values" are inbuilt in a bogus fight against a ghostly "al-Qaeda" in Afghanistan - which has meant in fact NATO getting its ass kicked for interminable 11 years by hordes of enraged nationalistic Pashtuns with Kalashnikovs and rocket launchers.

Local Governments Have the Power to Restrict Drone Surveillance in the US

revor Timm
EFF

A series of events in the last two weeks have set the stage for how surveillance drones will be operated by local law enforcement in the United States and how citizens can demand privacy protections as domestic use escalates. As EFF has previously reported, Congress passed a bill in February mandating the FAA must open national airspace to drones, despite the extensive and unprecedented civil liberties dangers they pose to every American.

The FAA, in new rules announced on Monday, made the authorization procedure easier, stating they have “streamlined the process” for “public agencies”—which includes local law enforcement—to legally operate drones in U.S. skies. We know that dozens of law enforcement agencies already have drones, based on information from EFF’s Freedom of Information Act lawsuit over the FAA’s initial refusal to release the list of authorizations. And one of the biggest cities with a police department on the list was Seattle...

Vermont gov. signs fracking ban into law

The governor of Vermont has signed a bill that bans hydraulic fracturing as a means to extract gas from underground deposits.

Gov. Peter Shumlin signed the fracking ban into law Wednesday afternoon, making Vermont the first state to ban the practice.

Hydraulic fracturing is the practice of injecting water and chemicals under high pressure into underground shale to release natural gas.

"We don't know that we don't have natural gas in Vermont," Shumlin said. "This bill will ensure we do not inject chemicals into groundwater in a desperate pursuit for energy."

Yemen: reported US covert action 2012

Key US counter terrorism actions in Yemen
Since 2011 US counter terrorism operations in Yemen have been conducted by both the Pentagon and the Central Intelligence Agency. Attacks are aimed at Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and more recently, Ansar al-Sharia.

US activity may also consist of naval bombardments and air strikes, often in conjunction with, or in support of, the Yemen military.

As Yemen came under severe pressure during the Arab Spring and militants seized control of cities and towns in the south, the US significantly stepped up its attacks, most notably with drone strikes.

May 17 15:15

The mysterious U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle detachment in Djibouti. Are they conducting covert air strikes in Yemen?

Although their presence over there is not a secret (since it was announced about 10 years ago and you can see some by simply pointing Google Earth on Djibouti International Airport, as done in this interesting OSGEOINT analysis) what’s still unclear is what eight U.S. F-15Es are currently doing in the Horn of Africa.

They are reportedly serving in support of Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa, as an Expeditionary Squadron of the 380th Expeditionary Operations Group, based at Al Dhafra, in the United Arab Emirates, and responsible for the “war on terror” in the region, but what’s their actual mission remains a (sort-of) mystery.

Even if the American military presence across the world is usually very well advertised, the U.S. keep a low profile on the operations launched by the Air Force’s Strike Eagles from Eastern Africa.

The reason for such prudence maybe that, along with the Reaper drones, even the F-15Es are conducting air strikes in Yemen (and Somalia).

Occupy Interview E8 - Occupy, May Day and the History of the Workers Rights Movement

Occupy interview speaks with this week's guest Dr. Jacob Remes, mentor and assistant professor of public affairs at SUNY Empire State College about Occupy, the Occupy May Day protests and the history of the labor movement.

American general strikes, or rather American calls for general strikes, like the one Occupy Los Angeles issued last December that has been endorsed by over 150 general assemblies—are tinged with nostalgia.

After being immersed in the world of alternative economic analysis for several years, it sometimes becomes easy to forget that most people do not track forex markets, or debt to GDP ratio, or true unemployment, or hunch over IMF white-papers highlighting subsections which expose the trappings of the globalist ideology. Sometimes, you just assume the average person knows what the heck you are talking about. This is, of course, a mistake. However, it is a mistake that is borne from the inadequacy of our age and our culture, and is not necessarily a product of weak character, either of the analyst, or the casual reader.

G20 report slams police for 'excessive' force

Poor planning by the RCMP, OPP and Toronto police for the G20 summit, along with orders by a Toronto deputy police chief to “take back the streets," are to blame for the more than 1,100 arrests during the 2010 weekend summit, says the province's top civilian police watchdog.

“What occurred over the course of the weekend resulted in the largest mass arrests in Canadian history. These disturbances had a profound impact not only on the citizens of Toronto and Canada generally, but on public confidence in the police as well,” writes Gerry McNeilly, head of the Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD), a citizen agency that today tabled the 300- page systemic review report.

Overall, McNeilly says, the G20 was an unprecedented event in the city’s history — one police forces were unprepared for.

2-minute video: military/police: reject ‘chain of obedience’ to unlawful orders

*hyperlinks and video live at source*

Americans have a choice to uphold justice under the US Constitution, honor unalienable rights, and reject Orwellian unlawful orders that kill in the millions, harm billions, and loot trillions of Americans’ dollars (full documentation here).

This choice is for all Americans, and with focused interest on those serving the 99% in US military and various expressions of law enforcement because they have authority to end the unlawful wars and arrest the 1% criminals.

The two-minute video from Waiting for the Storm makes the point.

The other choice is to obey “emperor has no clothes” obvious unlawful arms to commit egregious crimes, destroy the US Constitution’s rights, and support dictatorial government.

NYPD loses face and first Occupy Wall Street trial

His case could have been a slam dunk for the NYPD, had it not been for one thing: the video showing police claims of disorderly conduct during an OWS protest to be completely untrue.

Hundreds have been arrested during the Occupy Wall Street protests, but photographer Alexander Arbuckle’s case was the first to go to trial – and after just two days, the Manhattan Criminal Court found him not guilty.

Arbuckle was arrested on New Year’s Day for allegedly blocking traffic during a protest march. He was charged with disorderly conduct, and his arresting officer testified under oath that he, along with the protesters, was standing in the street, despite frequent requests from the police to move to the sidewalk.

As they say, it's not over 'till it's over. Palestinian prisoners have been mass hunger striking since April 17. Others began earlier. Some haven't eaten for two months or longer.

On May 14, a deal was announced. Egypt negotiated one with the Israel Prison Service (IPS) and striker representatives. Palestine Prisoners Society head Qadura Fares confirmed it. So did Israeli authorities.

Independent verification didn't follow. Nor did full clarification of terms. Israel's adept at creating considerable opt-out wiggle room. Deals aren't always as they seem. Broken ones reveal charades.

Medical Marijuana Laws For States Supported By More Than Two-Thirds Of Republicans, Poll Finds

Nearly three-quarters of Americans and more than two-thirds of Republicans believe federal officials should respect state laws on medical marijuana, a new Mason-Dixon survey of 1,000 likely 2012 general election voters found.

"What the results of this survey show is that there is absolutely no political justification for what President [Barack] Obama is doing with respect to medical marijuana laws," Steve Fox, director of government relations for The Marijuana Policy Project, told HuffPost on Tuesday afternoon. "Across the board ... there is extremely strong support for respecting state medical marijuana laws."
