ISIS suspected in car bombing of Hamas, Islamic Jihad men in Gaza

According to Hamas sources, at this point, the identity of those involved is unclear. One possibility is that ISIS-linked militants carried out the attacks, following the release of some, but not all, of ISIS-linked prisoners held by Hamas for the recent holiday.

Hamas did not point fingers at any group or organization but noted that this deed only serves Israel and the occupation.

Israel seeks stronger U.S. aid package with F-35 squadron inclusion

Israel will seek to increase the aid it receives from the United States, used mostly on defense, as U.S. Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter is set to visit the country next week.

Israeli defense officials believe certain aspects of the U.S. aid package may be strengthened, such as additional funding for the development of defense systems and the restocking of ammunition after last year's Israel-Gaza 50-day war, according to The Jerusalem Post.

An additional squadron of F-35 fighter jets may also be included in a future U.S. aid package. Israel will also want to improve its Iron Dome rocket defense system and its cyberdefense systems.

Obama buries Gaza under Iran nuclear deal

The deal between the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Iran over the latter’s nuclear program lifts an ominous shadow from a region already ravaged by bloodshed and conflict.

The specter of another ideological, US-led war on the pretext, once again, of eliminating phantom weapons of mass destruction recedes with this agreement. For that, the Iranian people and all humanity should breathe a sigh of relief.

Today US President Barack Obama held a press conference in Washington to promote the deal in the face of outright rejectionism from many members of Congress and Israel.

Israelis share photos of children demanding death to “terrorists”

Though Israel already has a death penalty option on the books, a death sentence hasn’t been carried out since the hanging of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in 1962. The true purpose of the bill was not the death penalty, it was racist incitement catering to the right-wing chauvinism surging through the Israeli Jewish public after reaching its peak during last summer’s brutal assault on Gaza.

The World Rebukes Netanyahu

In a rare rebuke to his bullying, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to stop the United States and five other world powers from reaching an agreement to constrain but not eliminate Iran’s nuclear program. Yet, Netanyahu still is dominating how the U.S. public and congressional debate is being framed, with Iran accused of regional “aggression” in four countries.

There is little truth and much exaggeration to Netanyahu’s depiction of what is going on in the Middle East. Yet, the U.S. mainstream media mindlessly reprises Netanyahu’s falsehoods...

Netanyahu’s reference to “Iran’s aggression,” which is now becoming a conventional-wisdom talking point in Official Washington, was curious since Iran has not invaded another country for centuries. In 1980, Saddam Hussein’s Iraq – at the urging of Saudi Arabia – invaded Iran. But Iran has not invaded any of the four countries that Netanyahu cited.

Jul 16 04:34

US/Israeli/Saudi ‘Behavior’ Problems

There is a madness in how the mainstream U.S. media presents the world to the American people, a delusional perspective that arguably creates an existential threat to humanity’s survival. We have seen this pattern in the biased depiction of the Ukraine crisis and now in how Official Washington is framing the debate over the Iranian nuclear agreement.

In this American land of make-believe, Iran is assailed as the chief instigator of instability in the Middle East. Yet, any sane and informed person would dispute that assessment, noting the far greater contributions made by Israel, Saudi Arabia and, indeed, the United States.

The larger issue for the American people is what to do with this insane political-media system that dominates Official Washington. Either these powers-that-be are detached from reality or they are deceitful propagandists who think they can manipulate us with lies and distortions.

A Review of GAZA WRITES BACK — Gary Corseri

I have sometimes thought that if wars could be shown in slow-motion, we could put an end to this barbarism that gives the lie to all claims of “civilization” and “humanity.”

GAZA WRITES BACK is one of those very rare books that depicts war in slow motion.

The 23 stories here, written by 15 young authors (from late teens to early 30s, all but three female) were compiled to commemorate the 5-year anniversary of “Operation Cast Lead”—the name Israel gave to its 2008-2009 campaign to once more (but not finally) “mow the lawn” in Occupied Palestine—mostly, in this case, in Gaza.

It is a book that vivifies and personalizes the horrors, but also adumbrates the gnawing losses, the indelible memories.

Why Palestinians Fight Back - The Logic of Life and Death in Gaza

Another row is brewing between Israel and the Palestinian Resistance Movement, Hamas, over the release of Avraham Mengitsu, an Israeli citizen who, according to Israeli military sources, ‘slipped into Gaza’ on September 7, 2014.

Spending the day of 17 August in Khuzaa was like peering through a window to hell. But what we witnessed in the landscape of apocalyptic oblivion paled in comparison to the experience described to me by two Palestine Red Crescent volunteers who had attempted to break through the Israeli military cordon during the siege of the town.

Twenty-five-year-old Ahmed Awad and 24-year-old Ala’a Alkusofi arrived at the edge of Khuzaa at a time when Red Cross ambulance crews refused to travel anywhere near the town. They said they had come to collect the body of a man whom soldiers had lashed to a tree by both arms and shot in the leg. When they arrived at the site, the soldiers ordered the driver of their ambulance, Muhammed Abadla, to exit the vehicle. When he obliged, they told him to walk five meters forward and switch on a flashlight. As soon as he flicked the light on, the soldiers shot him in the chest and killed him.

Israel prevents Palestinians in Jerusalem from getting water

"The water crisis in the neighbourhoods behind the Wall is due to continuous cuts of water supplies, which sometimes last three weeks," said the association. It pointed out that the Israeli water authority does not name the Palestinian neighbourhoods behind the Wall, but refers to them as "every unlicensed site". This might include many other Arab neighbourhoods in Israel, the association warned.

Based on this policy, the Israeli water authority does not supply "enough water that meets quality standards" to the Arab residents in these areas. It also adopts "illegal and arbitrary" ways of deciding consumption prices and collecting money.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, Israel is charging the Palestinians for the water they don't get?!?

Remembering Gaza’s victims

Documenting Israel’s military assault on Gaza last summer, I witnessed what can only be called atrocities: hospitals and morgues, overwhelmed by the constant flow of casualties; nights of terror under widespread and indiscriminate bombing; attacks on hospitals, ambulances and United Nations schools used as shelters; entire neighborhoods destroyed.

Of all the horrifying statistics, one is particularly shocking: 142 families lost three members or more in single Israeli strikes. I started the project #ObliteratedFamilies — now available for download and exhibitioning all over the world — to document such loss. It began as a project about the victims, but soon became also a project about the survivors. How can one cope with loss on this scale?

Webmaster's Commentary:

Now that a deal has been reached with Iran, Netanyahu has a real problem. The world's attention will shift back to Israel's war crimes, and Israel's nuclear weapons.

Clinton's support for Israel is unwavering - one-sided like virtually everyone else in Washington. Palestinian rights don't matter except at times paying them disingenuous lip service.

She supported cutting off Palestinian aid - ignoring the harm it would cause. She outspokenly defended unrestricted Israeli West Bank colonization - on stolen Palestinian land.

She believes it's as much an Israeli right as statehood for Palestinians. She moderated her tone slightly as Secretary of State (January 2009 - February 2013).

Indeed, these commentators are paid individuals, often university students, who are hired by the office of the prime minister of Israel to respond quickly and fiercely to anyone daring to criticise the state of Israel and its actions.

How Israel’s Gaza Blockade Backfires

Israel’s crushing blockade – and periodic assaults – against the 1.8 million people jammed into Gaza have led to the emergence of an Islamic State affiliate that is now challenging Hamas, an example of how extreme repression breeds ever greater extremism, writes ex-CIA analyst Paul R. Pillar.

The Washington Post whitewashes the violence of Israel's occupation

In its inaccuracies and omissions, the Post's article is a microcosm of the way in which the mainstream media distorts and misrepresents the reality in Palestine, whitewashing Israeli violence and colonial control, and decontextualising attacks by Palestinians under occupation.

A Jewish Defector Warns America: Benjamin Freedman Speaks

"Now, first of all, I'd like to tell you that on August 25th 1960 -- that was shortly before elections -- Senator Kennedy, who is now the President of the United States, went to New York, and delivered an address to the Zionist Organization of America. In that address, to reduce it to its briefest form, he stated that he would use the armed forces of the United States to preserve the existence of the regime set up in Palestine by the Zionists who are now in occupation of that area."

Spain: Left wing parties condemn Israeli flotilla action

In a written statement, the Galician Nationalist Bloc described Israeli action as "piracy".

The bloc's spokesman Francisco Jorquera and Rosana Peres, a parliament member, also criticised the Spanish government's reaction over the incident, which saw Israeli forces taking by force the civilian vessel, Marianne, to the Israeli port of Ashdod.

Spanish Member of the European Parliament Ana Miranda, who was on board Marianne but now back in Spain, also spoke in the Spanish parliament earlier today.

The spokesman called on Spain's Foreign Ministry to take a tough stance over the incident and face the Gaza issue head on.

Podemos's spokesman Rfael Mayoral also urged the international community to raise its voice against Israel.

Mayoral emphasized that Israel should end its "discrimination" and "blockade" on Gaza underling that Israel violated human rights.

Contrary to Israeli claims that the Marianne was taken peacefully, this video shows that armed commandos used brutal violence against unarmed passengers aboard the Gaza-bound boat early on Monday.

According to the organizers of the flotilla, 14 of the 18 civilian passengers and crew remain in Israeli custody more than two days after they were violently abducted in international waters to prevent them breaking the Israeli-imposed siege on Gaza.

Palestinian citizen of Israel and member of the Israeli parliament Basel Ghattas, former Tunisian president Moncef Marzouki, Spanish European Parliament member Ana Miranda and Israeli journalist Ohad Hemo have been released.

The other passengers remain in detention at Givon prison in present-day Israel.

Palestinian cinema thrives in London despite festival demise

The vibrant line-up of Palestinian cinema in London this summer comes despite the surprising and somewhat mysterious suspension of the London Palestine Film Festival which, with its program of talks, exhibitions and panels, was able to place the films in a broader context.

The festival, which started out in 1998 as a student venture at London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), issued a statement in late May announcing that “After 17 editions of the London Palestine Film Festival, the Palestine Film Foundation has announced that from 2015 it is suspending production of the annual film festival indefinitely.”

According to the statement, the goal of achieving enough funding to run the festival “at the standard deemed necessary” has “continued to elude the organization.”

Well-known BBC presenter hints Israel may be underdog

So, in the 21st century — these supposedly modern, anti-racist times — how does Israel get away with the chauvinistic behavior of 19th century European settler states without arousing the fury of the masses?

The answer lies in the fact that the masses — accessing their news from the mainstream media — simply don’t know what’s going on.

Mainstream news sources shield Israel from the wrath of millions who, if they were aware of the facts, might be lobbying for change.

The variety of ways in which this cover-up takes place was starkly illustrated in recent weeks by the BBC’s Newsnight program, broadcast every weekday evening and billing itself as providing “analysis and observation of the news agenda.”

The settlements are not part of Israel

The Trade Promotion Authority Bill signed by President Barack Obama last week includes an important clause stipulating that the United States will not trade with countries that boycott Israel.

This clause is supposed to protect Israel from an economic boycott. But the same clause, which authorizes the president to take all measures to protect trade with Israel from politically motivated acts, says the protection will apply not only to Israel but to “territories controlled by Israel.”

The law’s sponsors intended to protect products from the settlements, as though they were an inseparable part of Israel. But this attempt to blur the border between Israel and the occupied territories got a cold reception from the president. Obama made it clear that despite the wording of the legislation he signed, he does not intend to protect products made in the territories.

Israel deports former Tunisian president to France

Following Israel's hijacking of the Gaza-bound ship Marianne in international waters on Monday, Arab-Israeli Basel Ghattas MK has been released from custody and former Tunisian President Moncef Al-Marzouki has been deported to France, reported Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.

Sixteen foreign nationals were on board the vessel, along with two Israelis, Ghattas and a television reporter. The MK could face a parliamentary hearing to see whether he should face sanctions or not. He revealed that MEP Ana Miranda was also deported along with Al-Marzouki.

According to Ghattas, the Israeli navy intercepted the Marianne at 2am local time and the crew turned the engines off, refusing to cooperate with the Israelis. By 7am, the navy was towing the ship towards Ashdod. "The Israelis confiscated all of the activists' personal belongings, including mobile phones and other equipment," he said. The Hijacking of The Marianne by “The Pirates of the Mediterranean”

The “international community” is, it would seem, remarkably selective over piracy.

Concern over Somali pirates was such that foreign Navies were sent to protect shipping in international waters. In one incident three alleged pirates were killed and a Somali teenager spirited away to the US to be tried, whilst eleven others were sent for trial in Kenya.

However, in the early hours of the morning (local time) of June 29th, three Israeli Navy ships intercepted and hijacked a Swedish flagged ship, the Marianne av Göteborg on route to Gaza in the State of Palestine (recognized as a State by the United Nations on November 30th, 2012 by an overwhelming vote of 138-9, elevating Palestine to Non-Member Observer State a status bestowed on just one other entity, The Vatican.)

“Israel is the only democracy that defends itself in accordance with international law,” Netanyahu insisted, adding that “there is no siege on Gaza.”

Letter signed by 22 senators urges Obama to support Israel

Nearly one-quarter of the U.S. Senate signed on to a bipartisan letter urging President Barack Obama to support Israel around the world.

Twenty-two senators signed the letter, which was written “in response to your welcomed recent remarks at Congregation Adas Israel” on May 22 concerning his commitment to Israel’s security. The letter was sponsored by Sens. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.

While welcoming Obama’s “unwavering commitment” to Israel’s security, the signers also want the Obama administration to remain committed to the United States’ “long-standing policy” of negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians as the way to peace.

The letter specifically asked the administration to oppose Palestinian efforts for membership in the United Nations and other international bodies.

Webmaster's Commentary:

How nice that everything is running so well in our country that those Senators have nothing better to do than worry about Israel and Palestine, and work towards peace by blocking Palestinian statehood wherever they can!

Why Israel Declared 18 Dairy Cows a National Security Risk

Within six months, the whole town had turned to the local dairy for its milk, dubbed “Intifada milk.” The self-made dairymen delivered it by night so Israeli soldiers wouldn’t see it. One day an Israeli soldier came to the farm, took photos of the cows, and told the Palestinians they weren’t allowed to have the cows and gave them 24 hours to shut it down. He said the cows were a threat to Israel’s national security. Amer Shomali thinks he knows why.

“For the Palestinians, it meant a step closer to being free, to be able to decide their future, to be independent. Basically that was what was the security threat for Israel. It’s not the cow itself. It’s what the cow represents: a step toward independence.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

The goal for Israel was to keep the Palestinians dependent on Israeli dairies, for both economic and political gain. We see the same thing happening here in the US with the government forcing us to remain dependent on favored corporations, for economic and political gain.

Sniper shots and mass arrests: UN Gaza report also documents Israeli abuses in West Bank last summer

The recently released United Nations report on the 2014 war in Gaza meticulously documents last summer’s horror. The reports of Israeli executions of Palestinians, Israel’s aerial assaults on Palestinians in their homes in Gaza and other aspects of the assault have attracted the most attention.

But the UN report also highlights what it calls “widespread human rights violations” by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem during the time period it examines. These violations ran the gamut from a sweeping campaign of arrests of those Israel claimed were tied to Hamas, torture of detainees, killings of protesters and punitive home demolitions.

Israel shoots four boys enjoying evening walk in Gaza

Jun 28 09:21

Passengers of the Freedom Flotilla III bound for Gaza have announced that one of the boats, named Juliano after the co-founder and director of The Freedom Theatre, Juliano Mer Khamis who was assassinated in 2011, has been sabotaged. Divers damaged the boat’s propellers, causing it to take in water and the boat barely made it into port in Greece before it sank. On Saturday June 27th, passengers reported that the flotilla was followed by an unidentified patrol boat and a military aircraft.

Israel has engaged in a massive campaign to prevent the flotilla from reaching Gaza, threatening the participants in a similar fashion as during earlier attempts to break the illegal siege on Gaza. In 2010, Israeli troops attacked a similar flotilla in international waters, killing ten of the activists onboard and detaining many others.

Joint Arab List MK Basel Ghattas sent a written message to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon on Sunday, warning to keep security forces away from the flotilla in which he is taking part, meant to break the Israeli naval blockade of the Gaza Strip.

"Command the security forces to allow us to enter Gaza and avoid the use of force," read the letter from Ghattas.

In op-eds, church leaders say BDS is moral response to Netanyahu’s rejection of Palestinian statehood

Over the last day or so, three remarkable op-eds by church leaders have been published in U.S. regional newspapers in support of some measure of BDS, boycott, divestment and sanctions, to end the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

The op-eds are remarkable because they honor BDS as a tool, and two of them specifically reject the equation of BDS with anti-Semitism, a charge that cowed many non-Jewish activists in times gone by. And all three slam the rightwing Israeli government for defying international opinion or using the peace process to expand. So the churches must act, the leaders say.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is very clever. By declaring BDS a moral crusade, these church leaders have invalidated the amendment tackled onto a trade bill by the US Congress which forbids Europe from engaging in political boycotts of Israel.

Vatican recognises state of Palestine; Israel irked

The Vatican signed a treaty with the “State of Palestine” on Friday, saying it hoped its legal recognition of the state would help stimulate peace with Israel and that the treaty itself would serve as a model for other Mideast countries.

Vatican Foreign Minister Paul Gallagher and his Palestinian counterpart, Riad al-Malki, signed the treaty at a ceremony inside the Vatican.

Israel expressed disappointment when the Vatican announced last month that it had reached final agreement with the “State of Palestine” on the treaty regulating the life of the Catholic Church in the Palestinian territories.

It repeated that regret in a Foreign Ministry statement on Friday, saying the move hurt peace prospects and would discourage the Palestinians from returning to direct negotiations.

A Straight Look at the Jewish Lobby

For many years Israel has violated well established standards of international law and has defied numerous United Nations resolutions in its occupation of conquered lands, in extra-judicial killings, and in its repeated acts of military aggression.

Most of the world regards Israel’s policies, and especially its oppression of Palestinians, as illegal and outrageous. This international consensus is reflected, for example, in numerous UN resolutions condemning Israel, which have been approved with overwhelming majorities.

“The whole world,“ said United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, “is demanding that Israel withdraw [from occupied Palestinian territories]. I don’t think the whole world… can be wrong.” [1]
