Settlement rush: Record Israel construction tenders in occupied territories

Israel was accelerating construction of the new settlements on the occupied Palestinian territories throughout 2014, setting a 10-year record for the number of construction tenders issued. The overall increase in construction starts reached 40 percent.

With the US-brokered talks with the Palestinian Authority breaking down last April, the Netanyahu government has been putting out an unprecedented number of construction tenders, maintains the group Peace Now in a report published on Monday.

ABORIGINES IN ISRAEL ~~ PAST AND PRESENT

The Palestinian citizens of Israel stand at the crossroads of hope for peace in the Middle East, their achievements uncelebrated and their promise untested. As a member of this indigenous group, I try to bring our existence to light, to sing out our pleasure and pain, to echo our sense of alienation and dispossession, to face up to the dilemma of our identity, and to hail our occasional successes and our trust in the future.

Since the establishment of the state, we have endured systematic dispossession and ghettoization. Of late, the process has turned vicious: fundamentalist messianic Zionists and settler leaders, the abrasive curse of occupation, have assumed advanced positions in Israel’s political and military leadership.

Palestine accuses Israel of opening dams, flooding Gaza, forcing evacuations

In the wake of a recent severe winter storm in the region, Israeli authorities opened the floodgates to discharge the accumulated water, Palestinian officials say. Residents of eastern Gaza reported injuries as well as deaths of livestock and poultry, caused by the Israeli action which allegedly came without prior notification, Gaza's Civil Defense Directorate (CDD) said Sunday.

Israel opens dams’ gates, floods Gaza

Hundreds of Palestinians have been forced to evacuate their homes in the Gaza Strip because of a move by the Israeli regime to open the gates of several dams surrounding the besieged area.

“The [Israeli] army opened the floodgates of a canal leading to central Gaza, which led to the removal of sand mounds along the border with Israel,” GAZA’s Civil Defense Directorate (CDD) said in a statement on Sunday.

“Opening the levees to the canal has led to the flooding of several Palestinian homes, and we had to quickly evacuate the afflicted citizens,” the statement further read.

21 YEARS LATER ~~ #JeSuisHebroni

Twenty one years ago this week terror struck out in Hebron. Thirty Palestinians at prayer were slaughtered by one Judeo nazi. There were no solidarity marches, there were no massive outcries in the Western Press, after all, the dead were only Palestinians. Instead there were graveside ceremonies glorifying the terrorist and his acts. Twenty one years later a compatriot of the terrorist is a candidate for the Knesset.

UNITED PALESTINIAN PARTIES ARE THE ONLY ONES RAISING ISSUES

With the Israeli election just a bit less than a month away, there still has not been any issues raised by the major players. The United Arab List has been the only Party that has …

The joint list’s platform — which was distributed at the Nazareth event — contains eight points. Foremost is a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on the two states, with East Jerusalem as a Palestinian capital and a “just solution” to the Palestinian refugee issue based on the right of return as enshrined by the United Nations. The platform calls for the dismantling of all West Bank settlements and the “racist separation wall.” “I think this is the one thing we didn’t have to argue about,” said Touma-Suleiman.

Leaked e-mails show that Israeli consulate, StandWithUs tried to thwart Northwestern divestment (Updated)

The Israeli consulate and other pro-Israel groups teamed up to try to thwart a divestment campaign at Northwestern University, according to e-mails obtained by Mondoweiss.

Their efforts ultimately failed, though. Last night, Northwestern University’s student government voted to recommend divestment from corporations linked to the Israeli army. The resolution passed with 24 student senators voting in favor, and 22 against.

The leaked messages are from a listserv for the campus’ Hillel. They provide insight into the inner workings of how pro-Israel groups, many of them from outside campus, are banding together to fight divestment resolutions on campus. The boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement on U.S. college campuses has become a major focus for pro-Israel groups over the past few years.

The long struggle of the Palestinians in Israel

Concomitant with Israel’s founding in 1948, its armed forces systematically expelled Palestine’s native population and razed some 500 of their communities to the ground in the largest and most successfully denied ethnic cleansing campaign in modern times.

A mere six and a half decades later, who knows about Damoun, for example? Who remembers it except for its surviving refugee sons and daughters and their descendants?

Why London’s SOAS should vote to sever links with Israeli universities

Next week, 23-27 February, there will be a school-wide referendum in which students, academics and other staff members will vote on whether to boycott Israeli academic institutions and put pressure on SOAS to follow the BDS guidelines.

For weeks we have been campaigning for a yes vote, organizing events, distributing flyers and posters to raise awareness about the complicity of Israeli academic institutions in the ongoing oppression and human rights violations of the Palestinian people.

In this video we as the student and academic body of the BDS campaign aim to expose SOAS’s collaboration with Israeli academic institutions, such as Hebrew University, which are deeply tied to the Israeli military. We should not, as students and academics, let SOAS maintain these links in our name.

A school near the occupied West Bank city of Nablus has been repeatedly attacked by Israel.

How EU-US trade deal could thwart “boycott Israel” campaign

Two members of the US Congress have introduced a bill that would turn a giant trade deal between the EU and US into a devastating weapon against the people of Palestine and all those seeking justice alongside them. Together with the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) that is currently under negotiation, the proposed bill would compel all 28 EU member states to crack down on European groups participating in the growing movement of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

In order to combat the increasing isolation of Israel in global public opinion, European governments would effectively be turned into police agents for the US state.

Students allege “travesty of justice” as Ohio university muzzles debate on Israel divestment

After several hours of debate on Tuesday night, the student government at the University of Toledo in Ohio shut down a hearing on a resolution to divest from firms abetting Israel’s crimes.

Just before the vote was to take place by the student senate, the university’s Student Judicial Council, part of the student government, announced that it had ruled a resolution calling for divestment “unconstitutional” on the grounds that it was “discriminatory” and “one-sided.” The ruling allowed no recourse or debate and the entire vote was then scrapped.

As The Electronic Intifada reported, the university administration had insisted that discussions relating to the resolution be conducted in a secretive manner.

A group of Israeli settlers from the Asfar (Metzad) settlement, to the east of the town of Al Shuyoukh, uprooted 550 olive tree saplings on Tuesday night and ran away.

The land's owners, Al-Halayka noted, were shocked yesterday morning to see their trees, which had been planted around a week earlier, uprooted.

Ohio university imposes secrecy on divestment resolution

At the Unviersity of Toledo in Ohio tonight, student activists will argue in favor of a resolution to divest from US companies profiting from Israeli violations of Palestinian rights.

But the university administration is mandating that they must do so in a “closed meeting,” preventing both the resolution’s supporters, opposition and the general public from hearing presentations to the student government.

The resolution voting process will also be done by secret ballot, meaning that the student body won’t be able to know how their representatives voted on the resolution.

Israel’s claims on journalists slain in its war “misleading”

The Palestinian ministry of information strongly denounced Israel’s channel 7 for fabricating claims about some of the journalists that had been killed by the Israeli army during the last war on the Gaza Strip, and described its report as “misleading.”

Israel’s channel 7 claimed in a recent report that eight of the journalists who were killed during Israel’s last military operation in Gaza were working for Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

The information ministry said in a press release on Sunday that the channel’s claims about the journalists was an exposed attempt by the Israeli government to shirk its responsibility for the crimes its army had committed against the journalists in Gaza.

I Was Born in Israel Many Years before I Realized Israel Was Palestine

I was born in Israel and it was many years before I realized that Israel was Palestine. I was relatively patriotic. AP Exclusive: High civilian death toll in Gaza house strikes

They were among at least 844 Palestinians killed as a result of airstrikes on homes during Israel’s summer war with the Islamic militant group, Hamas.

Under the rules of war, homes are considered protected civilian sites unless used for military purposes. Israel says it attacked only legitimate targets, alleging militants used the houses to hide weapons, fighters and command centers. Palestinians say Israel’s warplanes often struck without regard for civilians.

THE TEMPEST WE KNOW AS THE OCCUPATION

Freezing cold winds, rain and threats of snow is what Jerusalem is experiencing today. That’s fine for those living in homes or apartments, but what about those living in tents or on the street? Israel backers celebrate death of Islamic State hostage Kayla Mueller

Hardline supporters of Israel are expressing joy over the death of 26-year-old humanitarian aid worker and sometime Palestine solidarity activist Kayla Mueller, who was killed while in captivity of Islamic State last week.

Islamic State (also variously abbreviated as IS, ISIS or ISIL) claimed that Mueller died in a Jordanian airstrike in Syria coordinated with the United States.

Although it has yet to verify the circumstances, the US government on Tuesday confirmed that Mueller was killed, prompting an outpouring of tributes from people around the world lauding her humanitarian activism.

But for Israel’s most hawkish supporters, Mueller’s solidarity work with Palestinians resisting Israeli occupation made her unworthy of sympathy and even deserving of death.

What conflict? No room for Palestinians in Israeli election

The lack of campaign-trail focus on making peace with Israel's enemies seems to bode poorly for negotiating prospects after the March 17 election. Palestinian leaders say they expect tough times ahead.

Conservatives Dance On Grave Of ISIL Hostage: 'Jew-Hating, Anti-Israel B**ch'

Not all conservatives used the death of American hostage Kayla Mueller to highlight the brutality of the Islamic State — some decided to focus their disgust on the 26-year-old's humanitarian work for Palestinians.

"No tears for the newly-departed Kayla Mueller, the ISIS hostage whose parents confirmed today that she is dead," conservative blogger Debbie Schlussel wrote on Tuesday, under the headline, "Kayla Mueller: Dead ISIS Hostage Was Jew-Hating, Anti-Israel Bitch."

"Mueller was a Jew-hating, anti-Israel piece of crap who worked with HAMAS and helped Palestinians harass Israeli soldiers and block them from doing their job of keeping Islamic terrorists out of Israel," she wrote.

Schlussel condemned Mueller's humanitarian work in the "so-called 'West Bank'" to prevent the demolition of "terrorists' 'houses.'"

The short documentary “Khelil Helwa (Hebron is Beautiful)” follows a young boy from Hebron’s Tel Rumeida neighborhood as he goes about his daily life, uncovering the matrix of Israeli military control that defines every aspect of life in the occupied West Bank. For Palestinians, the footage may at first appear somewhat unremarkable, and the scenes of soldiers barking orders and even arresting the film’s 15-year-old star, Awni Abu Shamsiya, are heart-breakingly familiar. But for Israeli-American filmmaker Yuval Orr, it was the hope of showing the footage to Israeli audiences that motivated production.

‘CELEBRATING’ THE NEW YEAR OF TREES IN ISRAEL

This holiday has its origins not in the Bible, but rather in the Mishna, which was written in the early 3rd century CE. It is primarily an agricultural holiday, as evinced by its other name, New Year of Trees.

This holiday is celebrated in the midst of the rainy season (late January or early February). It was originally a holiday with halakhic (Jewish legal) significance, as it was used to mark the age of a tree for the purpose of harvesting and tithing its fruit – tithes that were given to the priests who served in the Temple and did not own any land.

ETHNIC CLEANSING: ISRAEL’S ULTIMATE STRATEGY TOWARD THE PALESTINIANS

In a farewell speech, outgoing UN Special Coordinator for the so-called “Middle East peace process” Robert Serry has warned the apartheid state of Israel that continued settlement building in the West Bank was killing any remaining chances for the two-state solution.

Serry said the killing of the two-state solution strategy would transform Israel into a bi-national state.

George Galloway at BBC Question Time

BBC Question Time with guest George Galloway was an excellent opportunity to witness and assess, the vile, violent and ruthless Zionist community living in our midst. The Jews who heckled Galloway yesterday may have lived in this country for generations, but they have clearly failed to adopt British manners or the spirit of democracy into their behaviour.

MP Galloway went out of his way to distinguish between Israel and Zionism on the one hand, and Jews, Judaism and Jewishness on the other. However, the North London Jews in the hall made it clear that this distinction didn’t apply to them. They made it obvious that, for them, Israel is the ‘Jewish State’ and being Jewish, Israel is their State.

Guardian Executive Editor Jonathan Freedland repeated the exact same line, he asked Galloway to exercise responsibility and not to criticise Israel for what it is because the Jews are sensitive and fearful. For Freedland, the continuum between the Jew and Israel is undeniable.

The ugly truth about Israel’s actions in Gaza

What a huge diplomatic achievement: Israel has succeeded in getting the Canadian law professor William Schabas to resign from his post as head of a UN inquiry panel into potential war crimes in Gaza.

Through persistent surveillance, Israel’s intelligence and propaganda branches revealed that Schabas had once received a $1,300 fee from the PLO. Conclusion: he sold his soul to the devil. The ref sucks. Q.E.D.

One needs a great deal of chutzpah and arrogance to dig anew into the pasts of Israel’s critics in an effort to assassinate their character, as in the case of Richard Goldstone, merely because they dared to criticize the state. As far as Israel is concerned, the fate of anyone who criticizes the country is sealed. He’s an anti-Semite, anti-Israeli, greedy or driven by ulterior motives.

‘Blood Diamonds’ and Israel’s Diamond Export Industry

In November, members of the Kimberley Process (KP), meeting in plenary in South Africa, squandered what was probably their last good opportunity to ban the sale of all blood diamonds, including cut and polished blood diamonds which are an important source of funding for the nuclear armed regime in Israel which stands accused of the crime of apartheid, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The governments with a vested interest in the diamond industry, that set up and control the KP, failed to amend the definition of a “conflict diamond” which is restricted to “rough diamonds used by rebel movements or their allies to finance conflict aimed at undermining legitimate governments”. All other diamonds associated with human rights violations evade the KP regulations.

How a war criminal can veto aid to Gaza

Has an Israeli war criminal been given a veto on what aid may enter Gaza?

Earlier this week, I wrote about how Yoav Mordechai, a major-general who took part in the 2009 attack against Gaza, had been invited to the European Parliament. Following complaints by Palestine solidarity activists and some of the parliament’s own members, Mordechai’s scheduled appearance was cancelled at the last minute yesterday.

He did, however, meet representatives of the European Union’s 28 governments.

It is both grotesque and logical for these diplomats to host Mordechai.

Dozens of European parliamentarians call for end to EU-Israel treaty

A group of sixty-three members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from across the five biggest political blocs in the parliament have called on European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini to suspend the EU-Israel “association agreement.”

The association agreement facilitates largely unrestricted trade between the EU and Israel, allowing Israel to participate in a wide range of the EU’s programs. It also permits Israeli arms companies to receive EU funding.

The MEPs argue that allowing the agreement to stay in place despite Israel’s recent massacre of Palestinians in Gaza “sends Israel the message that its violations of basic principles of human rights will be tolerated.”

PALESTINIANS HAVE A VOICE BUT NOT A VOTE

Israel pretends its society is a normal, US-style melting pot, but there are only two problems – there is nothing remotely “normal” about Israeli’s societal composition and, furthermore, the pot’s ingredients, by policy design, have yet to melt. The destructive societal divisions amongst Israel’s population shines through during every election; this time around is no different. While Israel’s nearly five-decade military occupation of Palestinians is slowly, but surely, ripping Israel out of its global comfort zone, not one electoral contender has peeped a word about how the occupation will come to an end.

The rise of 'pro-Israelism' in American politics

The US-Israel special relationship is acknowledged universally as the unswayable force of politics in the Middle East. The theme is confessed ritually by every US president and Israeli prime minister, who have all claimed, more or less, that "the bond between Israel and the United States is rooted in more than our shared national interests; it's rooted in the shared values and shared stories of our people."

Commitment to this article of faith is a litmus test for anyone hoping to exercise power in American politics. Minor deviations can and do have major political consequences, a fact acknowledged last year by the conservative American commentator Tom Friedman, who disclosed that the first President Bush paid a massive political price for standing up to Israel back in 1990; Bush asserted US foreign policy towards Israeli settlements by conditioning $10 billion worth of loan guarantees on a total cessation of settlement construction. He was not re-elected for a second term.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There were other factors at work in that election. George H. W. Bush was in serious trouble. He had been able to hold the investigation into Iran-Contra at a distance, but he also knew that he would not be able to hold off the White House connection for another four years. So he arranged for the White House to go to the one Democrat he knew would keep the lid on the secret, then Democratic Governor of the state that was the US end of the guns and drugs pipeline, Bill Clinton.

But pissing off Israel didn't help.

Israel’s foreign minister has described as "inevitable" a third war with Lebanon and a fourth aggression in the besieged Gaza Strip in the wake of a recent retaliatory attack by Hezbollah.

Israel: promised land for Jews … as long as they’re not black?

At the time, these ‘rescue’ missions were mired in controversy. Hailed by some Zionists as the inevitable homecoming of African Jews to the ‘birthplace’ of Judaism, to others it was a cynical ploy by the Israeli government to alter the demographics of Palestine. The airlifts were, literally, a means of importing Jews to the contested land en masse, no matter where they were from, in an effort to ‘improve’ the ratio of immigrant Israelis to native Palestinians. But now, twenty years on, how well have Ethiopian Jews assimilated into Israeli society? Has their communal story been one of success and full integration or have they been used primarily to boost Israel’s policy of colonising more of Palestine; to provide a ready pool of conscripts for the Israel Defence Forces (IDF); to provide a workforce for low-status manual labour; and to be treated like relative outcasts in the principally white Jewish community of Israel?

UC Davis passes divestment resolution, five other campaigns launched across US

Last night, the student government at the University of California at Davis voted in favor of a resolution to divest from corporations profiting from Israel’s occupation.

In a landslide vote — eight voting yes, two against and two abstaining — the student government at UC Davis recommended that the University of California system’s governing body divest from Caterpillar, G4S, Veolia Environment and Raytheon.

The divestment victory comes just months after the UC Davis administration appeared to be receptive to efforts by the Anti-Defamation League — a leading Israel lobby group — to treat boycott, divestment and sanctions efforts as “hostile events” that the university should deem security threats.

Angry Man Threatens Students at University of Toronto Scarborough

On Thursday November 6, a 34 year-old man with no affiliation to the University of Toronto furiously entered the Scarborough Campus Students’ Union office after hours. He stole a poster that read WARNING: THIS UNIVERSITY PROFITS OFF ISRAELI APARTHEID AND OCCUPATION. All attempts to calm him down failed. After stealing the poster he drove off, recording the incident with his phone. Campus police filed a report and said to notify them if the man returns. After a couple of weeks we put up another sign. The man came back. He forced his way into the student union. We tried to calm him down and initiate dialogue. The man replied with, “I’ll rip your fucking throat out” and “I have twelve guys on standby ready”—implying that he or other people will be back. He shouted that he use to be a part of the “israeli” military and regularly killed “terrorists”.

Israel is on a rampage. It has been raining death and destruction in Gaza for weeks. It pounded Lebanon into rubble. It, with the help of the US , resisted calls for an immediate cease fire. After the UN passed a resolution calling for a cessation of hostilities, it went ahead and carried out a raid in Lebanon , in flagrant and clear violation of the cease-fire resolution, and Israel ’s Prime Minister has said such raids may well continue.

In the West Bank it carried out a raid in broad daylight as late as Sunday August 20 and grabbed from his Ramallah home Mahmoud-al-Ramahi, a senior Hamas member and secretary general of the Palestinian parliament. Just a day before Israeil soldiers swooped in on Deputy Prime Minister Nasser Shaer and seized him from his home, also n Ramallah. Israel presently holds five Palestinian Cabinet ministers and more than two dozen lawmakers. Almost all of Hamas West Bank leadership is now in Israeli custody.

Netanyahu and ‘the Big Lie’

With the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) acceptance of Palestine as a member, and its agreement to investigate possible Israeli war crimes during last summer’s brutal bombardment of the Gaza Strip, Israeli Prime Murderer Benjamin Netanyahu seems to be having fits of rage. His puppet, the United States government, has also denounced the Court’s decisions, and Mr. Netanyahu has made the following bizarre statements:

* “It’s absurd for the ICC to go after Israel, which upholds the highest standards of international law. Our actions are subject to the constant and careful review of Israel’s world-renowned and utterly independent legal system.”

* “But this decision is even more preposterous given that Israel is legitimately defending itself against Palestinian terrorists who routinely commit multiple war crimes. They deliberately fire thousands of rockets at our civilians, while hiding behind Palestinian civilians whom they use a human shield.”

The Tel Aviv stabbings:What the media left out

On Wednesday in Tel Aviv, a 23-year-old Palestinian man stabbed and injured as many as 12 Israelis who were riding a public bus during morning rush hour. No deaths were reported, although three people were hospitalized with serious injuries.

U.S. mainstream media coverage of this attack painted a picture of Israeli citizens living in fear of deranged Palestinian terrorists. The media rarely mentioned that Israeli forces have maintained a 48-year military occupation that profoundly impacts and virtually imprisons 4 million Palestinian men, women, and children in the West Bank and Gaza. The media also omitted significant information on Palestinians killed and injured by Israel during the period reported on.

International Criminal Court Opens ‘War Crimes’ Inquiry Into Israel

For decades, Israel has never faced any international oversight, or recognized any international laws or UN resolutions regarding its illegal and violent occupation in Palestine.

Writer Ali Albunimah explains, “When your land has been occupied by a foreign army as long as your children have been alive, and this occupying army regularly brutalises and humiliates the friends and relatives of these children, stopping kids from confronting the invaders is naturally going to be very difficult. Convincing the Israeli adults in control of this weaponry in civilian areas that they should not be using it to kill children who are merely stone throwers should not be difficult. The statistics sadly tell a different story, of a deep-rooted Israeli contempt for the lives of Palestinian children that should inspire Western outrage.”

BEX ALERT - Israel claims to have found first Palestinian Islamic State cell

Israel said on Sunday it had cracked the first Islamic State cell on its soil, made up of seven Arab citizens who would be prosecuted on charges of planning attacks in the Jewish state and communicating with the insurgent group in Syria, Reuters reported.

"The defendants, including a lawyer who was representing himself in court, denied the charges of belonging to an illegal group, aiding terrorism and contacting foreign agents," a Justice Ministry spokesman said after a gag order on the case was eased.

THE BOMBING THAT STARTED IT ALL!

Menachem Begin planned the destruction of the King David Hotel and the massacre of Deir Yassin. Ex prime minister, Shamir, was originally a member of the Jewish "terrorist" gang called Irgun, which was headed by none other than Menachem Begin. Shamir later moved over to the even more radical "Stern Gang," which committed many vicious atrocities.

Shamir himself has defended the various assassinations committed by the Irgun and Stern gangs on the grounds that "it was the only way we could operate, because we were so small. So it was more efficient and more moral to go for selected targets." The selected moral targets in those early days of the founding of the state of Israel included bombing of the King David Hotel and the massacre of Deir Yassin.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Israel was created with a false-flag attack; the July 2, 1946 bombing of the King David Hotel, then being used to house British administration officials. Although carried out by Israelis, the Palestinians were framed for the "terror" attack, to turn the British against the Palestinians! Keep this history of Israel in mind when evaluating Paris, or anything else that goes "bang" and is then blamed on Muslims.

The Spectacular Media Failure on Charlie Hebdo

A core tenet of journalism is answering the question “why.” It’s the media’s duty to explain “why” an event happened so that readers will actually understand what they’re reading. Leave out the “why” and then assumptions and stereotypes fill in the blank, always readily supplied by politicians whose ridiculous answers are left unquestioned by the corporate media.

Because the real “why” was unexplained in the Charlie Hebdo massacre, an obviously false culprit was created, leading to a moronic national discussion in the U.S. media about whether Islam was “inherently” violent.

For the media to even pose this question either betrays a blinding ignorance about the Middle East and Islam, or a conscious willingness to manipulate public sentiment by only interviewing so-called experts who believe such nonsense.

Tradition has it that Jerusalem’s Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque were built upon the ruins of King Solomon’s Temple, destroyed by the Romans in 70AD.

But what if the ruins aren’t there?

That, in fact, is the conclusion drawn by Dr. George Buchanan, Professor Emeritus of New Testament Studies at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Buchanan posits that the original site of King Solomon’s Temple is just south of the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aska Mosque in an area where today Palestinian homes are being bulldozed to make way for a park over what is now considered by many archaeologists the old City of David.

Interestingly, Jewish spitting has had an impact on the urban landscape of Europe. The following can be read in a ‘Travel Guide for Jewish Europe.’

THE CHARLIE HEBDO ATTACK 7.1.2015 We should be swift to condemn atrocity, but slow to jump to conclusions

We should be swift to condemn atrocity, whether from East or West (and West has been guilty of plenty) but slow to jump to conclusions as to perpetrators or motive of violent outrages such as this one today, in the offices of Charlie Hebdo, the French weekly satirical magazine. Recent history and events have taught us that, at least.

The reality is that these barbarous acts are embedded in, and cannot be extricated from, the whole Middle East mess, for which we cannot escape partial responsibility. The bottom line is that the role of France and other Western countries in Syria and elsewhere has probably more to do with today’s outrage than a few cartoons and the issue of free speech to which the public’s attention has been directed.

US: Palestine Not a State, Can’t Be ICC Member

The US State Department is demanding that the International Criminal Court (ICC) reject Palestinian membership on the grounds that “Palestine is not a state” and that the application is therefore unacceptable.

The comments echo those from Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu, though as neither Israel nor the US is a ratified member of the ICC, neither necessarily has much pull, and the UN has already confirmed Palestine’s membership will be active effective April 1.

An Egyptian committee has finished surveying the homes of individuals living between 500-1,000 meters of the Gaza border in preparation for the extension of a buffer zone on the border to a width of 1,000 meters, Egyptian military sources said Friday.

The move comes after the destruction of hundreds of homes inside the 500-meter area previously, as part of a wider effort to ensure that the joint Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the Gaza Strip be fully carried out.

Israel's attorney general to charge Zoabi with incitement

The legal advisor to the Israeli government declared yesterday his decision to file an indictment against the Member of the Knesset for the National Democratic Alliance Hanin Zoabi on charges of inciting violence and insulting a civil servant.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It normal when Knesset Jewish member attacks Palestinians, Arabs, and Muslims, but when an Arab Knesset member criticises Israel's security behavior toward Palestinians, it's called 'incitment' and he or she should be punished.

DENNIS ROSS: STOP BLAMING THE PALESTINIANS

Dennis Ross has done it again. In “Stop Giving Palestinians a Pass” (NY Times, January 4, 2015), he blames the Palestinians for the lack of peace with Israel. Citing “three serious negotiations”– the 2000 Clinton parameters, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s 2008 proposal, and the recently ended negotiations led by Secretary of State John Kerry – Ross implies that Palestinian refusal to compromise spoiled each of these opportunities.

Why is Israel funding Jerusalemites’ addiction?

Israel is concentrating all of its efforts on dividing the people of Jerusalem into individual factions and they have a plan to target each of these factions in an individual way. Israel’s plan of attack is being implemented slowly so that it can permanently phase out the Palestinian presence in the city, little by little and gradually in a frantic war over the city.

The Month in Pictures: December 2014

In the occupied Gaza Strip, which the United Nations warns will be potentially unlivable by 2020, the passing year closed as it had begun: under a comprehensive siege imposed by Israel in 2007 and enforced by Egypt’s dictatorship.

An Israeli airstrike on Gaza on 20 December — the first since the 51-day massive assault this summer — raised fears of renewed military conflict.

Israel has violated on a daily basis the 26 August ceasefire which ended nearly two months of intensive bombing and shelling, during which 2,257 Palestinians in Gaza were killed, including 539 children, according to the UN monitoring group OCHA.

Prosecuting Israel’s crimes: a moving snowball that can’t be stopped

How important is the decision by Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian Authority’s president, to sign the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC)?

The prominent human rights advocate Shawan Jabarin suggests that the decision is like a moving snowball that “can’t be stopped.” Although Israel has been granted impunity by Western governments for decades, there is now a real possibility of bringing Israeli war criminals to justice.

Palestinians Seen Gaining Momentum in Quest for Statehood

When the Palestinians sought statehood at the United Nations in 2011, it was widely dismissed as a symbolic gambit to skirt negotiations with Israel and Washington’s influence over the long-running conflict. Retaliatory Response to Palestinian Authority's ICC Bid Underscores Injustice of U.S. and Israeli Policies: Critics

The Palestinian Authority's formal application to join the International Criminal Court has been met with a flood of retaliation and threats from Israel and the United States, illustrating, critics say, the unjust policies of these powerful countries.

The PA formally submitted the application to the global court on Friday, signaling the intention to "seek justice for all the victims that have been killed by Israel," including during the latest 50-day military assault on Gaza, which killed at least 2,194 Palestinians, over 75 percent of them civilians and more than 500 of them children.

Just one day after the application was submitted, Israel announced that it will freeze approximately $127.6 million in Palestinian Authority tax revenue in retaliation. Excluding international aid, this revenue comprises two-thirds of the PA's annual budget, according to Al Jazeera America.

Israel to Divert Military Budget to Settlement Expansion

Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon have announced they will divert some $18 million from the nation’s military budget , which includes money provided as direct military aid from the United States and others, to settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank.

Netanyahu had promised to provide the money to construction 300 more homes in Beit El settlement after the 2012 court decision to demolish 5 apartment buildings built illegally on privately owned Palestinian land.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Annexation and asset forfeiture have been the key Israeli governmental tools to making sure, if there is ever a Palestinian nation, that the physical land it upon which it will exist will be no larger than a postage stamp.

By deferring money from the US government's grants (read: our taxes)which were originally engineered to insure Israel's military competitive edge, Netanyahu is saying to Obama "Up yours!!"

What President Obama and Congress should do, in response to this action, is to immediately stop all financial and military aid to Israel, which is already illegal under the Symington Amendment.

Then, that money should be used to repair the US's crumbling infrastructure.

Of course, that will only happen when pigs fly, due to AIPAC's generous contributions, both in terms of finance and marketing, for those Congressional Representatives who will do whatever Tel Aviv wants them to do.

And if you don't believe me, just take a good, hard look at the new sanctions the Menendez-Kirk-Schumer wishes to impose on Iran, even before the P5+1 talks are due to resume. IF these gentlemen manage to find a "veto proof majority" on this bill, it will force Iran to walk away from the negotiating table, which is precisely what it is engineered to do. And who is just salivating over such a potential outcome?!?

Israel.

As reported at lobelog.com:

Copies of the bill that Sens. Kirk , Menendez , and Schumer hope to introduce in the Senate this week — presumably to be pressed for passage after the Christmas/New Year recess — are circulating today around Washington, and, as predicted, it is clearly designed to sabotage last month’s first-phase deal (the Joint Plan of Action) on Tehran’s nuclear program, as well as prospects for a final agreement. The bill is called the Iran Nuclear Weapon Free Act of 2013 , although I would prefer to call it the Wag the Dog Act of 2014, given the implicit discretion it gives to Bibi Netanyahu to commit the U.S. to war with Iran. Its key provisions, as described by the sponsors, are laid out at the end of this post. As I’ve noted in past posts, the two main co-sponsors of this legislation are also two of the biggest recipients of campaign funding from “pro-Israel” political action committees (PACs) associated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in the U.S. Congress, according to the Center for Responsive Politics’ Open Secrets website. By a wide margin, Kirk was the biggest recipient of pro-Israel PAC money in Congress since 2002; in his most recent campaign (2012), Menendez received more than $340,000 from pro-Israel Pacs, beating out all other Senate candidates. Schumer, a major rainmaker for other Democratic candidates (which poses a very serious challenge to the Obama administration in keeping his party in line on any vote on this bill) ranked fifth in his 2010 race at more than $260,000, far behind Kirk, the year’s winner at nearly $640,000. Let there be no doubt about it: this bill was approved by AIPAC and is thus as close to the position of the Israeli government as its followers here believe will be politically palatable. (Saudi Arabia will also be pleased.)

Sexual Violence, Women’s Bodies, and Israeli Settler Colonialism

They not only invaded our home, took over our space, and evicted us—they even arrested me and took me to the Maskubya—the police station. I was put in room number four, alone, for a long time. Then, a big and tall man, a police officer, entered the interrogation room. I was alone, and started shivering from fear as he closed the door, started moving things around in the room and examining me from head to toe. I was terrorized, and my heart was beating so fast. His eyes penetrated my body, as he was opening the drawers looking for something. Then, he left the room and came back five minutes later holding a box. He pulled out a pair of blue plastic gloves, and put one on each of his hands, while looking at me and saying “…Come here…” I must tell you that I was terrorized when they invaded the house and evicted us. I was extremely anxious when they arrested my son.

UK activists sue Israel over raid on Gaza-bound flotilla

A group of British activists has filed a lawsuit against Israeli troops over a 2010 attack on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla that left 10 Turkish activists dead.

Lawyers of the activists have asked Scotland Yard to open a probe into the incident to find whether Israeli special forces committed war crimes.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One of the dead was an American citizen.

Israel murdered an AMERICAN CITIZEN in international waters, for taking their picture! A 19-year old boy from New York carrying a US Passport. Indeed Furkan Dogan's American citizenship is in less dispute than that of Barack Hussein Obama!

Back in 1941, there was this foreign nation, Japan, which was illegally occupying other peoples' lands in China and Indonesia.

There were Americans in close proximity to that foreign nation, in the then-territory of Hawaii, and even though the Americans had not actually done much of anything, that foreign nation decided it had the right to attack and kill Americans just on the off chance that somewhere down the road, they might be in inconvenience.

Thus came about the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Now, just for a moment imagine that instead of declaring immediate war on those who attacked Americans, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had rushed over to the League of Nations to explain why Japan's attack on Americans was really no big deal, and that Japan had good reason to attack and kill Americans! Imagine if Roosevelt, instead of the "Day of Infamy" speech, had made countless excuses why Japan was perfectly right to attack and kill Americans. Imagine that the US Congress, instead of voting war against the nation that attacked Americans decided to punish those who criticized the nation that attacked Americans?

Quite an amazing fantasy isn't it? Yet this is exactly what we have seen the present government do over the last few years ever since Israel's attack on the aid flotilla!

Israel, citing grounds of national security, occupies the lands of Palestine, just as Japan, citing national security, occupied China. The Americans in the aid flotilla had not actually done anything to threaten Israel, just like the Americans sitting in Pearl Harbor had done nothing to threaten Japan.

1941 Japan attacks Americans in the middle of an ocean and the US goes to war against Japan.

2010 Israel attacks Americans in the middle of a sea and the US Government protects the attacker.

In 1904, American businessman Ion Perdicaris was taken prisoner by Mulai Raisuli. Now, from Raisuli's point of view, he had good reason to take Perdicaris prisoner as Raisuli was fighting against foreign occupation of his homeland. Even Perdicaris conceded that Raisuli was acting from what Perdicaris considered justifiable motives.

But President Roosevelt did not view the affair from Raisuli's point of view. He viewed it from the point of view of a President of the United States. Under the slogan "Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead!" Roosevelt sent 7 US Battleships with orders to destroy Morroco if Perdicaris was not released. Perdicaris was sent home.

Those men were real Presidents; Presidents who understood that their job as commander in chief is to protect America and Americans first and foremost, and to hell with the other guys' point of view; real Presidents which when compared to, Obama is but a thin and venal wisp of shadow.

Palestinians criticise Israeli decision to withhold tax

Israel is withholding $127 million (€106 million) in tax revenue it collects for the Palestinian Authority in response to its move last week to join the International Criminal Court, further escalating tensions with a step that could have repercussions for both sides.

Saeb Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator, said that the Israeli move could lead to the disintegration of the 20-year-old authority because it would be unable to pay government workers or provide public services. America stabs its Arab allies in the back

The US-Arab alliance is one of the strangest and most interesting in the world, perhaps even in history. It is certainly the most one-sided, whereby America takes everything from its Arab allies and gives them nothing in return. The US attitude is disrespectful, untactful and inflexible. Washington gives Arab governments nothing to work with and nothing to give to their people, not even a fig leaf for appearances' sake.

The most recent example of this disrespect by the US was its open contempt for its Arab allies when it voted against the draft UN Security Council resolution to end the Israeli occupation of part of the occupied Palestinian territories. This resolution is based on what is known as "international legitimacy" despite the fact that the Palestinians went to the Security Council stripped of all their historical rights. However, this did not help them or gain the acceptance of Washington, which seems to disregard the Palestinians in particular and the Arabs in general.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What those Arab oil nations ought to do is all at once agree to sell their oil for the Ruble and the Yuan.

One killed in Gaza by Egypt border guards: Sources

At least one Palestinian has been killed in the frontier town of Rafah in the besieged Gaza Strip by Egyptian soldiers firing from across the border, sources say.

"A Palestinian citizen, aged 23, was killed by Egyptian army fire on the Egyptian-Palestinian border and the security agencies are investigating the incident to find out the motives," Gaza's Interior Ministry spokesman Iyad al-Bazm said in a message on his Facebook page on Friday.

The Egyptian forces shot the unnamed man "in the back and the bullet settled in the heart. He died on the spot," Gaza’s emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said.

Collins Bartholomew, a map-publishing company that is a subsidiary of HarperCollins, said that including Israel in its “Collins Primary Geography Atlas For The Middle East” would have been “unacceptable” to their customers in the Gulf and that leaving Israel off the maps incorporated “local preferences.”

While Israel is not demarcated on the maps, the West Bank is clearly labeled.

With Israel ‘war crimes’ gambit, PA risks loss of US funding

In initiating a war crimes probe against Israel with the International Criminal Court, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas may fall afoul of US legislation that would mandate defunding the PA. The US funds the PA to the tune of some $400 million per year.

Even if Abbas’s ICC investigation gambit does not play out — and Palestine’s route ahead at the ICC is strewn with legal obstacles — it is viewed by many leaders of the incoming Republican-controlled Congress as the latest justification to reexamine the PA’s American funding.

Readers expect greater accuracy from New York Times columnists.

How dare Mr. Roger Cohen suggest that Gaza, a part of my homeland, is “nowhere!”

If Mr. Cohen is at a loss to know where Gaza lies, allow me to guide him. The Gaza Strip, as well as Gaza City, were both part and parcel of Historic Palestine, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. Following the colossal injustice that resulted in the displacement of more than half of the Palestinian people, and then the creation of what we know today as the state of Israel, and the subsequent military occupation of the remaining Palestinian lands of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the Gaza Strip become part and parcel of an Israeli-militarily-occupied territory. It is this military occupation under which many of my friends and colleagues were born and live to this day.

Palestinians To Join International Criminal Court

Turning up the pressure on Israel, the Palestinians announced Wednesday that they are joining the International Criminal Court to pursue war-crimes charges against the Jewish state — a risky, high-stakes move that brought threats of retaliation from Israel and criticism from the U.S.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas acted a day after suffering a defeat in the U.N. Security Council, which voted down a resolution setting a three-year deadline for the establishment of a Palestinian state on lands occupied by Israel.

"We want to complain. There's aggression against us, against our land. The Security Council disappointed us," Abbas said.

Turning to the international court at The Hague marks a major policy shift, transforming Abbas' relations with Israel from tense to openly hostile. The ultimate goal is to pressure Israel into withdrawing from the territories and agreeing to Palestinian statehood.

Webmaster's Commentary:

And the countless killings of innocent Palestinians by the IDF are not "hostile" acts?!? Operation Protective Edge was not "hostile"?!? The brisk annexation of Palestinian land for Jewish only settlements is not "hostile"?!?

US 'Strongly Opposes' PA ICC Request

The United States said Wednesday it "strongly opposes" a request from the Palestinian Authority to join the International Criminal Court (ICC), fearing this will further delay peace talks with Israel.

"It would be counterproductive and would do nothing to further the aspirations of the Palestinian people for a sovereign and independent state," the State Department said. "It will badly damage the atmosphere with the very people with whom they ultimately need to make peace."

"As we've said before, the United States continues to strongly oppose actions -- by both parties -- that undermine trust and create doubts about their commitment to a negotiated peace," it continued. "Our position has not changed. Such actions only push the parties further
apart."

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US is doing its level best to keep the criminal activities of the IDF and Israeli government against the Palestinians as quiet as possible; with the Palestinian Authority becoming a signatory to the ICC, that will be rendered impossible.

The level of embarrassment the US government will experience will be pretty uncomfortable, when neither they, nor Israel can dictate the narrative here.

Palestinian statehood bid fails at UN Security Council as US, Australia vote against

The UN Security Council has failed to adopt the Arab coalition’s bid calling for the creation of a Palestinian state and an end to Israeli “occupation”. The veto power US and Australia voted against the move with 5 abstentions.

The draft resolution gathered only 8 votes in favour, so it was automatically defeated. The US however still used its veto power and voted against the resolution.
